There is no more GW Micro homepage. I went to look for it a long time ago and couldn't find it. Pam. -Original Message- From: David via Talk Sent: Thursday, August 23, 2018 11:26 AM To: Window-Eyes Discussion List Cc: David Subject: Re: APP Central Though downloading apps from App Central never required any password or other identification, this kind of warnings should always make red lights come on. Either the site is just insecure, and will never be renewed, due to FS letting WinEyes die out. Or, someone has hacked the site, and might eventually have hacked the apps found there as well. Sum of it all: Stay clear. Whatever is wrong with the GWMicro homepage, all guesses would be that you will never see them fixed. Only reason why it even still is possible to find any such site, would be no less than a guesswork. Likely it only shows how little FS even bothers, since they have not even closed the server altogether, I should think. Next will be this list, which might break without any further notice. Either because some kind of subscribed service from the GW team will expire, or FS remembers to pull the plug. No, I am not trying to be negative; just trying to let you know that likely your warning message is all perfectly right. You are warned, and should heed that message. How to best obtain the apps you are looking for? Give us a list, and see if you will receive the installers for each and every of the apps you were used to benefit from. Likely someone here, or on the other WinEyes list, will have the installer backed up somewhere. Further, i do seem to recall someone here on the list, recently posting a link to a Dropbox collecdtion of the app central. Even if you could get it, keep in mind that some apps might be outdated, or even rather sluggish under modern usage. In such cases, you are left to contact the app developer directly, hoping they have some updates for you. Whether we want to or not, we will have to face the fact that WinEyes is slowly being phased out. App Central has not been reliable for several months, and it's final does not surprise at all. Only surprise is, how long they let it stay oparative. Yes, when I bought window eyes, it was all one price. I bought it when they had the monthly payment plan. When there were just a few payments left, I opted to pay the rest all at once and finish. I won't ever purchase any app that's subscription based even if the cost is 50 cents a year! Sounds horrible but I can live with it. Like B J, I have been using Office 2007; even though I received a note from Microsoft that support for Office 2007 has ended, it is still serving me well and I am yet to find a need for an upgrade to the latest Office bell and whistle. I read about folks struggling with something called Back Stage and how to disable it. Yikes, make an app better if necessary, just don't make it too complicated in order to get this done. I'm interested in knowing whether or not the laws in the books can be invoked when it comes to dealing with adaptive app and equipment companies. Look at Humanware; it created the BrailleNote Touch and deployed a deprecated copy of the Android OS on it; it still sells for more than $5,000! How about HIMS? It claims to run on Android 5.1.1 which will soon become deprecated as well. And it sells for $6,000! In both situations, no path for an upgrade and, worst still, the freedom Android offers is nonexistent. Example: In Android Land, you can install and use your own preferred TTS engine. What nonsense if I dare say so! For as long as is possible, I shall continue to look at products in the mainstream. As I slowly KISS WINDOWS goodbye, I won't have to worry about the shenanigans of screen reader developers for this OS! I will not pay one cent for any type of Jaws subscription. Is there a way of transferring all my WE exception dictionary entries over to Jaws? I know the WE dictionary is merely a text file. Is this true for Jaws? If so, where would I find that file? I totally agreewith you. But it seems they seem to think they are so big and important they don't need anything from anybody else. I am not sure about what merge is being talked about, Window-eyes was dropped, not merged with Jaws. My point was Vfo had the chance to retain the best of Window-eyes and jaws in both technology and people and produce one hell of a screen reader unlike anything the world has ever seen and they chose not to do that, they just trashed their "compeditor" completely like they never existed. I also find Window-eyes synthesizer support was much better. I am not whining, I am just bemoaning the fact that a company got by with trashing a product completely, borrowing or using nothing from the product they trashed and acting like Window-eyes never existed, not to mention charging so much for the product. Don't give me that similar stuff, because I've found webpages where Jaws just doesn't work and NVDA and Narrator do. So why won't I just shut up? Unfortunately, they weren't willing to admit that there were people who knew how to do things better than they could. Most Window Eyes users had to buy it themselves. JAWS is a good program, but for me it is loaded down with so much stuff that I don't need. I still use We most of the time, using JAWS trying to get use to it in case WE doesn't work with the upcoming Win 10 upgrade. Too bad they didn't utilize Doug's knowledge and let him incorporate the better things in WE into JAWS. And it's possible that the jaws users who have always used it like what is familiar and have never used window eyes to know what it does better.
