I have not changed themes, whatever that is. They just suddenly started to
disappear. Somebody would have to talk to me and tell me step by step what
I have to do. Pam.

in most cases a reinstall is not needed.
you will lose your sounds if you have changed your windows themes.
in my case the sounds were still there in the windows sounds but undefined.
i searched for change system sounds and it took me to the list of the wave
files windows can use. find the window eyes sound and re define them.
there are 6 sounds.
but when you do you have to set the path to the sounds. they are not in the
windows media folder where all the other windows sounds are stored.
they are in the program files x86\gwmicro\wineyes folder.

If you can reinstall Window-eyes, you'll get your sounds back.
Otherwise, I could email them to you as attachments.

I was prompted to update to Firefox ESR 60 ().

I haven't done this because I read a post about the update not working
with Window Eyes or even Jaws.

There were no comments on the GW Talk list or this list as to more than
one person having the issue.

Is it safe to update?

Thanks,

I am glad that Doug Geoffray is now with Microsoft. Window Eyes used more of
the Windows key commands, than does JAWS. As a long time user of Window
Eyes, I have found JAWS much harder to learn. I have looked over the new
key commands that will be coming with the next release of Narrator and they
are more logical and use more standard windows keys commands.Looking
forward to try the new narrator.

Jaws is indeed a good screen reader, but websites like megabus.com
require you to select the month and day you will be travelling. That's
where VoiceOver shines. It is frustrating with Jaws to select the
month and day of travel. I recently had to interact with the U.S.
postal website. Again it was a challenge with Jaws and those drop down
menus. had to revert to Win-Eyes, but VoiceOver gets the job done.
It is the reason I am leaning towards a Mac. I guess an iPad could get
things done too.

I am inclined, to agree with Denis, to give Jaws a try, since going over

I find that the iPad is easier to learn than the Mac.

I have a jaws question.

Does Jaws have a configuration setting that mimics Window Eyes.

Also, how do you stop Jaws from announcing the alt key, the tab key etc.

Good luck to all,

Manny

Re: Considering VoiceOver

2018-08-24 Thread geodom--- via Talk
I'm still using window eyes, because I tried the jaws that they gave us, and
it was not satisfactory. I also downloaded the small tutorial that they
gave, but my download of jaws went back to the default settings after I
hadn't used it in a while, and when I tried to reset it, it wouldn't let me.

I did consider going down this route but I am basically lazy and it would
mean learning a new operating system. I am so familiar with the Microsoft
operating system and Windows that in the end I bit the bullet and went over
to Jaws.
Do I still miss Window-eyes? Yes, but migrating to Jaws hasn't been as
challenging as I feared and it helped being so familiar with the Windows
operating system.

Listers,
Been using Win-Eyes since Win-Eyes 3X. As Win-Eyes will not be updated, I
am strongly considering going to VoiceOver on Apple. Using VoiceOver on my
iPhone with Safari works perfectly. I don't know if Jaws will ever work well
with websites that use calenders; besides, I won't have to be upgrading a
screen reader everytime there is an upgrade

Click on Support and App Central is available.

I believe that the certificate or certificates for the site may have expired
so merely click on go onto this site 'not recommended' and you are right
there and everything is as it always was.

I'm certain that the AppGet can't proceed beyond the warning. So if you're
willing to do a little extra work, you certainly can download Apps from app

Though downloading apps from App Central never required any password or
other identification, this kind of warnings should always make red
lights come on.

Either the site is just insecure, and will never be renewed, due to FS
letting WinEyes die out. Or, someone has hacked the site, and might
eventually have hacked the apps found there as well.

Sum of it all:

Stay clear. Whatever is wrong with the GWMicro homepage, all guesses
would be that you will never see them fixed. Only reason why it even
still is possible to find any such site, would be no less than a
guesswork. Likely it only shows how little FS even bothers, since they
have not even closed the server altogether, I should think. Next will be
this list, which might break without any further notice. Either because
some kind of subscribed service from the GW team will expire, or FS
remembers to pull the plug.

No, I am not trying to be negative; just trying to let you know that
likely your warning message is all perfectly right. You are warned, and
should heed that message.

How to best obtain the apps you are looking for? Give us a list, and see
if you will receive the installers for each and every of the apps you
were used to benefit from. Likely someone here, or on the other WinEyes
list, will have the installer backed up somewhere. Further, i do seem to
recall someone here on the list, recently posting a link to a Dropbox
collecdtion of the app central. Even if you could get it, keep in mind
that some apps might be outdated, or even rather sluggish under modern
usage. In such cases, you are left to contact the app developer
directly, hoping they have some updates for you.

Whether we want to or not, we will have to face the fact that WinEyes is
slowly being phased out. App Central has not been reliable for several
months, and it's final does not surprise at all. Only surprise is, how
long they let it stay oparative.

Unless you change the modifier key to be CapsLock, the so-called JAWS key
is

the Insert key.
A few keystrokes to note, among the hundreds that are available:
Insert-1: have the keys announce their function instead of perform their
action.
Insert-T: Read title bar.
Insert-B: Read the current active window, like ctrl-shift-W in
Window-Eyes.

Insert-up-arrow: Read current line, like Insert-Center in Window-Eyes.
Insert-down-arrow: Read to end.
Insert-Tab: Get information about how you use the current contorl.
Insert-H: Some help for the currently-running program.
Insert-J: Open the JAWS control panel.
Insert-F4: Unload JAWS.
The numeric pad is not treated differently from the cursor keys and the
six-pack that are to the left of it.
Last spring Raoul Gallegos produced an 8-part podcast series about
transitioning from Window-Eyes to JAWS. Someone else can tell you what the
current URL is. Copy the files to your NLS talking book player and start
interacting with JAWS. It may not all make sense, but eventually you will
be

productive.

The most effective way is to press win-r for run and type:

In this folder you will find settings about jaws.
In the folder there is a Jaws folder and there you will find a folder
with the version number. 2018 or 18, 17 etc. You can simply copy this

I think it is better to use nvda when copying it on the new computer so

Jaws reminds me of bloatware instead of a simple screen reader.

It made me feel sick to have it on my machines, and so I got rid of it.
In a pinch, if worse comes to the worst, I will install it and use it.
However, I find using NVDA very pleasurable.
It feels so light when loading Windows screens and web pages, in contrast
to JFW which feels like dragging a net of fish up on the beach.
Probably there are other metaphors, but I'm trying to point to the fact
that it just feel super sluggish, not to mention the fact that it is
over-engineered, that is, way too complicated, and so it got in the way of
my work.

Take care,

Also, is there a keystroke for reading a document top to bottom? It was

Hmm, Carol, I paid only one price for Window-Eyes and I did not pay a penny
extra for the pro version. I got a one-size fits all CD, and the upgrades
were the same when I had an SMA! As GW Micro grave got dug, I chose NOT TO
PURCHASE an SMA. At that time, the small frequent updates Window-Eyes used
to get had gone away completely.

One thing some people may have forgotten or were not on board with WE
early enough was thay they also charged extra for pro versions of
Window-Eyes. It seems to me that it was at least $100 more than the
standard version because I did not have pro and a friend did. When the
time came that I needed pro, I did have to find the money to do so. The
difference between the two companies is that all upgrades cost the same
for WE and JFW charges more for the pro version upgrades.

I'm in your boat, brother! I won't ever purchase any app that's
subscription based even if the cost is 50 cents a year! Sounds horrible
but
I can live with it. Like B J, I have been using Office 2007; even though
I
received a note from Microsoft that support for Office 2007 has ended, it
is

still serving me well and I am yet to find a need for an upgrade to the
latest Office bell and whistle. I read about folks struggling with
something called Back Stage and how to disable it. Yikes, make an app
better if necessary, just don't make it too complicated in order to get
this

done.

I'm interested in knowing whether or not the laws in the books can be
invoked when it comes to dealing with adaptive app and equipment
companies.

Look at Humanware; it created the BrailleNote Touch and deployed a
deprecated copy of the Android OS on it; it still sells for more than
$5,000! How about HIMS? It claims to run on Android 5.1.1 which will
soon
become deprecated as well. And it sells for $6,000! In both situations,
no

path for an upgrade and, worst still, the freedom Android offers is
nonexistent. Example: In Android Land, you can install and use your own
preferred TTS engine. What nonsense if I dare say so!

For as long as is possible, I shall continue to look at products in the
mainstream. As I slowly KISS WINDOWS goodbye, I won't have to worry about
the shenanigans of screen reader developers for this OS! I will not pay
one

cent for any type of Jaws subscription. Until my WINDOWS machines all die
naturally, I'll STICK WITH WINDOW-EYES which still PUTS SOME GREAT FOOD on
my wee, small table!

Re: Musings and touching base

2018-04-11 Thread geodom--- via Talk
I am still using window eyes because I downloaded the jaws, and I haven't
been able to set it up the way I want to, no matter what I am told, and what
instructions I follow. It won't let me change things, and won't show me the
places to change what I want to change. So, I am still using window eyes.

Hello Lists,

I was cleaning out my emails and ran across a bunch from GW-Micro staff
and various list posts. Made me feel kinda sad. It's been around a year
since our beloved Window-eyes went the way of DOS and Word perfect. I
still have my win7 machine but use the replacement provided by the
conquerer because I need to get used to using it. Actually, I don't even
get on the computer much. I'm using FF 52.?? and am hoping Mozilla
makes FF 57 and beyond accessible again. I usually use my phone and am
considering getting a tablet with a keyboard but wonder how safe they
are from viruses.

Anyway, I read a lot of the posts on these two lists and wanted to let
you all know I'm still around, not that you really care, and that I
still miss Window-Eyes and the wonderful staff at GW-Micro. Still wonder
where they all went and hoping the best for them and all of you listers.

I actually contacted FO and asked to order a DVD copy of WE 9.5.4
They were happy to do so once they could verify me and my account with them
and the former WindowEyes. Of course they charged $20 just like AI squared
did but at least I have a permanent copy of WE and don't have to worry if my
system crash's or I get a new computer or laptop.

asit was said that it sounds like you do not have a full copy of WE.

I got a link sent to me by Doug before he left.

Press insert d and then control shift d.
Then insert numbpad 5 and press the space bar. Then it works similar to

is being talked about, Window-eyes was dropped, not merged with Jaws. My
point was Vfo had the chance to retain the best of Window-eyes and jaws in
both technology and people and produce one hell of a screen reader unlike
anything the world has ever seen and they chose not to do that, they just
trashed their "compeditor" completely like they never existed.

The reason there are so many JAWS users, is that government
organizations bought them. Most Window Eyes users had to buy it
themselves. JAWS is a good program, but for me it is loaded down with so
much stuff that I don't need. I still use We most of the time, using
JAWS trying to get use to it in case WE doesn't work with the upcoming

incorporate the better things in WE into JAWS.
