Olusegun,

I'm with you and thought the same thing about the last big lottery.
Sadly all we can do is hope.

Regards,
Tom

There were two versabrailles. The first one used cassettes, and the second
one used 3.5 inch disks, and was bigger and heavier. It had a back pack

When I got a job as a Rehab. Worker in 1986 I think it was, I started with
a Versabraille. It was supposed to be portable but in truth was too bulky
and heavy to lug around. I stuck with that for about three years, so it was
probably about 1990 when I got my first computer which was DOS-based and
loaded with Word Perfect and Vocal-eyes.

When DOS was discontinued there were forecasts of doom and gloom for sight
impaired people as they said there would be no way that a blind person would
ever be able to use a Window-based computer with all its graphics etc.

And yet here we are, and although technology advances at an ever-alarming
pace, thanks to companies like G w Micro (or should I now say AI Squared?)
and Freedom Scientific, we have good access to the internet and most of the
commonly used programmes.

Personally I don't mourne the death of DOS but I can appreciate why some
might.

Sky, Pam et al: ultimately - what will VFO Group do?

The screen reader industry is changing. The pattern is that individuals do
not wish to buy screen readers anymore. There are good reasons for that,
and as none of the screen readers are perfect, because in part Microsoft's
support of third party screen readers has now become suspect, Window-eyes
might survive with the free with Office initiative, but it won't develop if
it is free. Jaws will struggle, because it is over-priced, and demand for
it will fall because of free Window-eyes and free NVDA.

Microsoft has had years to get NVDA to the state where VoiceOver is now. It
simply hasn't, and small developers like GW Micro have done an outstanding
job, because Microsoft wouldn't.

All we can do (at least those of us who are on the outside), is fill lots of
band with with our speculation. We can rate screen readers against each
other as much as we like, but what really matters is where will we be in
six months.

I would like to hope that Bob Blake will give us some decent clues soon, as
the VFO Group must be strategising for the survival of screen reader based
technology.

This is very incorrect. I've worked for more than one employer both public
and private who allowed me to request the screen reader I wanted. This
includes three different U.S. Federal Government agencies who I've worked
for or worked under a contractor. I was able to request Window-Eyes for a
couple of different nonprofits and otherwise. Generally, all that you need
to do is produce an accurate, written justification for a Screen reader
other than JAWS or otherwise. Window-Eyes is on the GSA Schedule and is
also on the DOD Cap Program list.

As for NVDA, it will likely never be adopted by a public entity in the U.S.
or private company or nonprofit. This is because of the nature of its
open-source code which is vulnerable to threats of hacks and such to it's
source code.

As for Narrator, the proof is already there that it is not as robust as a
fully developed Screen Reader. It likely never will. It could certainly
improve and I am pleased that Microsoft is once again expressing interest in
improvement as I find it still rather frustrating to setup a computer which
has no Screen Reader installed or to recover from hangs.

Personally I don't mourne the death of DOS but I can appreciate why some
might.

Alison

I still have a DOS machine though it's hard drive is showing its age. I got
the machine in 1993 and it still gives me the correct date, time, et al. No
viruses and I still throw a few balls at it for giggles. It still has the
5.25-inch floppy disk--yikes, time to kick the rebel out of camp, eh?

Sincerely,

Me either. I started with Vocal-eyes back in 1990 or so, in college. It was
awesome. Let's bring back dos!

It saddens me that there are so many people, especially here in the UK, who
don't know about Window-eyes' existence.

I have used this screenreader right from the start, in fact when it was
called Vocal-eyes and used to provide access to DOS - this must be providing
some clues to my age!

But I've never regretted my choice.

I had a little bit of experience with vocal eyes, but since it was not my
first dos screenreader, I was not too comfortable with it. When I got my
windows computer, I had window bridge. I had to get a replacement
screenreader, so I got window eyes. Pam.
