You need Bluetooth hardware. If your computer doesn't have built in
Bluetooth, you can buy a usb adapter to give your computer Bluetooth.

Ok, thanks.
Now what you are taling about, is that the piece of hardware that either
goes in the usbport or in the audio output for the headsets?

If correct, are they just a fix for bluetooth or they indeed a reliable
source to give your computer bluetooth cabable?

having issues with creators update, particularly Miranda NG and TW Blue

2017-04-12 Thread Chris Skarstad via Talk
Hi. so I just updated my
laptop to the creator's update and all of a sudden, Window-eyes 9.5.4.0
no longer reads tweets when using the latest TW Blue, and messages from
Miranda NG won't read either. I've done a bunch of stuff before I
decided to write this message, so let me tell you what I did so we can
elimiate any unknowns. I thought it might be the Window-eyes display
driver, so I updated it, and the programs I mentioned still won't read
propperly. When going up and down in the list of tweets, Window-eyes
does not speak at all using the invisible interface of tw blue.
However, when I show the window, the tweets read just as they should.
I've also returned the settings in Window-eyes to their factory
defaults, still no dice. I've even gone so far as to uninstall, and
re-install Window-eyes, in hopes that that would fix it. Still no go.
I've made sure that the windows theme is set to classic, and the
background is solid color. I checked and my video card drivers are even
updated. The frustrating thing is that these programs work fine using
other screenreaders such as NVDA, but not Window-eyes. Do you guys have
any idea what I can do to fix this issue? I'm using my desktop to write
this since the creators update hasn't hit it yet, and after this
experience, i'm not looking forward to updating for obvious reasons.

Hope one of you guys can offer a bit of assistance.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks!

gun shy about new laptop

2017-04-12 Thread Van Lant, Robin via Talk
Late last summer I got a new HP laptop. The primary thing that drew me to it
in the store was the keyboard layout of having the 10-key number pad on the
right, yet only being a 15 inch screen. What I did not realize until after I
got it home and paid money for a tech to come help me set it up was two things.
First, it does not have the application key, which I have learned to get
around with the Shift F10 keystroke. The bigger problem was the whole thing
we've talked about with now having to push the FN key in order to get the
function keys to work the way I want. (I had not found someone who was
comfortable going into the bios to help me see about changing this.) The
biggest problem Is that this function key thing also applies to the Insert key,
as it is right next to the F12 key. I've gotten pretty good at using the caps
lock key instead, but this requires some real finger gymnastics to activate
certain Window Eyes command. Aside from all this, there is also some we
ird clicking thing that the keyboard occasionally does that is annoying. All
this to say, it's not been a great experience and had I not invested in paying
a tech to set up the computer for me, I probably would have quickly returned it
to Costco for a refund or exchange.

So, I'm in a situation now where I may be giving this laptop to my sighted
husband and getting a new one, but I'm gun-shy about how not to repeat this
problem in my laptop selection. I am not a heavy computer user at home, so did
not want to spend much money, although I'm not looking for the cheapest netbook
thing either. I mainly looked at Best Buy and Costco, because I wanted to get
my hands on the keyboard and feel the layout. I like that Costco doubles the
manufacturer's warranty and provides great, free help desk support for the
computers purchased there.

Any advice from those of you having purchased computers lately on how to
navigate this keyboard dilemma, especially if buying one online? I'd really
like to stay in the $500 range, if possible.

Hey listers,

I am considering going ahead and updating to the Creators edition today
instead of waiting until it comes around on the guitar, if some of you
are old enough to know or remember what I mean.

Two things I would like to know.

When I go to update within the settings options, will it take for ever
for the update process to even begin, like it did when updating to
Windows 10. If so, would I be better off using something like a media
creation tool as I finally ended up doing when upgrading to 10, or is
there any such tool, or as I guess I am trying to establish, is that
even an option?

Also, when does Narrator start talking in the process of updating? Or,
do I need to press windows-enter periodically within the process to
start it up?

OK, before I succeed in confusing even myself, I will turn it over you,
patient reader.

Thanks in advance,

Larry

Hi,
A couple years ago I purchased a Toshiba.
There were some thigs i liked.
1. Toshiba had a utility where I went in and turned off the function
key myself.

2. It has the 10 key number pad.
3. it has the applications key.
Here is the link, you can get it refurbished for about $350.00
It has windows 8.1 on it but you should be able to install Windows 10.

Subject: gun shy about new laptop

Late last summer I got a new HP laptop. The primary thing that drew me
to it in the store was the keyboard layout of having the 10-key number
pad on the right, yet only being a 15 inch screen. What I did not
realize until after I got it home and paid money for a tech to come help
me set it up was two things. First, it does not have the application
key, which I have learned to get around with the Shift F10 keystroke.
The bigger problem was the whole thing we've talked about with now
having to push the FN key in order to get the function keys to work the
way I want. (I had not found someone who was comfortable going into the
bios to help me see about changing this.) The biggest problem Is that
this function key thing also applies to the Insert key, as it is right
next to the F12 key. I've gotten pretty good at using the caps lock key
instead, but this requires some real finger gymnastics to activate
certain Window Eyes command. Aside from all this, there is also some we
ird clicking thing that the keyboard occasionally does that is
annoying. All this to say, it's not been a great experience and had I
not invested in paying a tech to set up the computer for me, I probably
would have quickly returned it to Costco for a refund or exchange.

So, I'm in a situation now where I may be giving this laptop to my
sighted husband and getting a new one, but I'm gun-shy about how not to
repeat this problem in my laptop selection. I am not a heavy computer
user at home, so did not want to spend much money, although I'm not
looking for the cheapest netbook thing either. I mainly looked at Best
Buy and Costco, because I wanted to get my hands on the keyboard and
feel the layout. I like that Costco doubles the manufacturer's warranty
and provides great, free help desk support for the computers purchased
there.

Any advice from those of you having purchased computers lately on how to
navigate this keyboard dilemma, especially if buying one online? I'd
really like to stay in the $500 range, if possible.

It's a nuisence, but have you thought of using a desktop keyboard plugged
into one of the USB ports?. I have very heavy fingers which get me into
constant trouble on a laptop with very sensitive keys. It also eliminates
the problem with accidently touching the mouse pad.

You might look at some Acer models.

Mine has the applications key, and, the mouse pad is easily disabled by
pressing fn plus f7. I may have had to go into BIOS and turn the fn key off,
but, I can't remember.

thoughts on the future of screen readers

2017-04-12 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
Hi listers:

All the stuff going on in the AT market made me think back to the 80's.

Anyone remember the Speech Plus calculator from Telesensory Systems?

Back in the late 70's, it blew many of us away. We had seen calculators,
and had our sighted friends and family members demonstrate them to us-of
course, we couldn't read the display. Then, here came TSI with a calculator
that we could use. Sure, it was a little big, but, we could hold it in our
hands, and it had a comfortable keyboard that was easy to learn, and, most
important of all, it talked! It cost $395.00.

Fast-forward to 1981 or 1982, I can't remember which. Suddenly, Sharp came
out with the EL-620. Here was a smaller, lighter talking calculator, with a
better speech chip. It did everything the Speech Plus did, and then some.
It could read numbers as words, like (four thousand three-hundred
forty-five" instead of 4 3 4 5 point oh oh. It You could tell it which way
you wanted to hear the numbers. Sure, there were some shortcomings. The
keyboard wasn't as comfortable, but, it could be learned. There was no
headphone jack, though, Sciencde For The Blind Products sold a model they
retrofitted with one. It didn't have rechargeable batteries, but, you could
buy an AC adapter. And, most attractive of all, it cost $69.95 retail.

Telesensory held onto the Speech Plus for a while longer. But, they
stubbornly refused to lower the price-in fact, the price went up to $445.00
before they finally dropped it and went to other things.

Could the same thing be about to happen with regard to screen readers?

After all, the 2 big players in the market here in the U.S. have been
Freedom Scientific and GW Micro. Their products had a similar price point,
though, Window-Eyes price was a little lower and you didn't have to pay a
higher price depending on which version of Windows you used.

Now, we have NVDA, and Microsoft could be stepping up the gain with
improvements in Narrator.

Could things go in a similar direction? Like the Speech Plus calculator,
could the price on the main screen readers actually go up, due to lack of
sales, and, one day, could they disappear altogether?

I doubt it, for the present, but, it may be something to think about.

Re: gun shy about new laptop

2017-04-12 Thread Brenda via Talk

Hi robin,

I have a similar story to yours. I am now a casual home computer user
as I no longer do medical transcription. I own a 15 inch Lenovo laptop
which I purchased last spring when my Win7 pc almost died.

When I called Window-eyes Tech support to find out what to avoid with
laptops, I was not warned about the function keys being designated and
the need to press the FN key to overide the default uses. Best buy
didn't tell me this eather until I had already paid for Geek Squad
service/set-up, and my laptop was ready to go home.

fortunately, my laptop does have an application key. Also, my numpad
has an insert key as part of the numpad. the numpad insert key is very
small, but it is there. could you have this key without realizing it
(just a thought)?

I still don't like having to use the FN key when i want to use the
Window-eyes copy & paste key F8 in some programs. It is a nuisance to
use the FN+fF6 key in Thunderbird as if you do it wrong it turns
airplane mode on and I lose my wifi connection. F5 to refresh is the
only other function key I have to look out for, but these are not
Window-eyes command keys. F1 is really tricky because it will mute
speech if the FN key is not pressed. that being said, it is sometimes
convenient to have the system function keys for things like volume and
close down.

I haven't used the laptop layout, but could that be a solution for now?

My Lenovo laptop cost $350 at Best Buy. It was discontinued shortly
after that, but it has what I need. Lenovo could be an option for you.

The only thing I like about laptops is that if the power goes out the
computer doesn't shut down. My husband was able to revive my Win7
desktop, and I will use my Win7 desktop until it really dies and forces
me to become proficient with Win10 on a laptop, possibly with the laptop
layout for Window-eyes.

sorry for lengthening a short ansre. Just my thoughts on the subject.

Brenda

because I will use my Win7 desktop until it really dies.

Hi Brenda,

I am not sure whether you realize, but you can reassign the F8 copy key under
hot keys, browse mode.
Also, I only run desktops, and all of them have a battery backup, which cost
about $50.00 and will keep your PC alive until you either power down manually,
or it will automatically execute the Windows Hibernate command and save
everything to the disk and then shut down safely.

couldn't get a business computer and still have the portability that I like?

Subject: gun shy about new laptop

Late last summer I got a new HP laptop.

Yes Yes, I remember that Big ol Basic Calculator. I recall it was a

I had just gone through Rehab, where I learned to use the Abacus. Laugh

learn to use the Abacus, Sighted and Blind both.

I thought it was a great tool to use when doing typical Math Stuff.

I have a couple of Talking calculators, but on occasion, I still use an
