[OSM-talk] Proposed automated edit: remove railway=* or highway=* tag on relations tagged type=route
Hello, Several relations have both type=route and highway=* or railway=* tags; I would like to remove the highway or railway tags from the relations, and leave them on the members. The relation highway tags are redundant with the member ways, make no semantic sense, and can cause rendering issues: - Redundancy: A route typically contains highways or railways that each have a highway=* or railway=* tag. Because the information is already included in the members of the relation, it is redundant to tag the relation with that tag as well — you're tagging in two places when you only need one. - Semantic meaning: These relations are not highways or railways, they are a *group* of them that make up a route. The tag belongs on the members, not on the relation. It causes semantic problems when the value of the tag differs on the relation and on the member: is the street a motorway like the relation's highway tag says, or residential like the way's tag says? - Rendering: if both a way and its relation are tagged as highway=* or railway=*, the line will get drawn twice on the map — once for the way, and once on top of that for the line formed by all the ways in the relation. While this is invisible in most cases, it will cause unexpected results if the tags disagree, e.g. a trunk that's part of a highway=motorway relation, or a railway tunnel that's part of a railway=rail relation. Since this is a bit abstract, here are concrete examples: http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/25435351 is a tunnel and part of http://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/404214 . Both the way and the relation are tagged as highway=tertiary, but the tunnel isn't shown on the map because of the wrong tag on the relation. http://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/270118 and http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/182573964 show the same issue on railways. If a country uses highway= [on a way] to reflect a route's administrative classification, then I can see why mappers transfer that to a relation for that route. If, say, the M1 and the M2 both share a stretch of motorway, and you build two relations to express that, it makes sense to tag the M1 relation as highway=motorway. However, the relation *isn't* a highway, but a group of highways. Taginfo finds type=route combined with 1374 instances of railway=* (0.48%) and 6426 instances of highway=* (2.23%). User pnorman has found relations where the highway relation tag disagrees with one or more members[0] — I have manually fixed some of them while investigating the issue, and there are now 504 left. The same analysis will have to be run for the railway tag, and all of these special cases will have to be looked at and fixed manually. In the vast majority of these special cases, just deleting the tag or the useless redundant relation will be sufficient, improve the map, and prevent things like service roads on the side of a motorway from being rendered as a motorway. In a minority of cases, the way that disagrees with the relation on highway type shouldn’t be in the relation — the service way that runs parallel to the motorway isn’t part of it. The edit will be from a specially created imports/mechanical edit account, and follow the Mechanical Edit Policy[1]. Any failed chunks or areas, or all remaining relations the Overpass API finds after running the tool, can simply be re-processed. The different OSM editors should explicitly mark relations tagged as type=route and highway=* or railway=* as an error. If there is no significant negative feedback or issues that cannot be resolved, I will probably open tickets for the various validators and QA tools, and run the fix again every couple of months. The Overpass API makes it easy to find the relations. The problematic relations exist worldwide, but because they are more common in some regions because of mappers imitating local (bad) habits — France has zero, Bavaria has many, Japan is full of them — I plan on splitting my edits by creating arbitrary groups of 400 relations, or creating tiles and subdividing them up until they contain less than 400 relations. Any better ideas are very welcome. Guillaume Rischard [2] [0] http://paste.ubuntu.com/6704102/ using https://gist.github.com/pnorman/cb841edb214a4ab8eb83 on a pgsnapshot database. Yes, as I said (actually I have done this several times before :D): Create custom style sheets for every country. Even Germany could use a different style sheet than UK. The matter is even more severe for completely other countries. Let every country/language group create their own style sheet (own colours, own fonts etc) which will be active in their country. The OSM web page should then use *those* stylesheets when rendering the global map. A common style sheet guide can help creating a familiar “OSM style” over country borders, but it can still be changed to make country specific changes possible. A large and difficult change in the software? Yes. The only way to make OSM really globally usuable? In my opinion definitely. Take a look at Google Maps, where every country looks slightly different, but still has a common appearance. Start a fund raising campain for this. I would definitely spend money for that. Or, if you are fine with restricting OSM only to Europe/America, then this is fine as well. But then don’t call OSM a “map of the world”. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk
Re: [OSM-talk] CJK fallback fonts - testing needed
Hi Paul and Hans For traditional Chinese characters, the Droid Fallback font looks better than current OSM version. I'd like to contiune Hans's opinions. Current OSM only uses zh tag to display Chinese characters. It seems not enough. The areas where people use Chinese are consist of China, Taiwan, Hong-Kong, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, and even Indonesia. Besides the difference between traditional and simplized Chinese characters, the use of Chinese is often very different. Thus, in Wikipedia, we can see that a Chinese wiki page has five different language types, including zh-cn, zh-hk, zh-mo, zh-sg, and zh-tw. The display of languages on the map is a political thing. It sometimes becomes a problem. For example, the controvertial areas. A couple of months ago, a Taiwanese mapper persisted in adding Senkaku Islands[1] on Taiwanses place name 釣魚台. The chage caused that Chinese and Janpanese mappers competatively re-name the island. I think most mappers don't like to such kind of mapping happen again. Cheers, Dongpo [1] http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/1788110205 On Sun, Jan 12, 2014 at 2:50 PM, Hans Schmidt z0idb...@gmx.de wrote: Hello, thanks for the test! Although it looks better than the first one, to be honest, it is still completely unsuitable for Japanese (if you want to have a “real” map): It is clearly a Chinese font, which is really different in some characters than a Japanese person would expect. This is also true for Taiwan, which is a little bit different. Korea also uses different characters, but because Korean usually uses Hangul, this is not so much of a problem. Therefore the only solution would be to render Japanese text (either the name:ja tag everywhere or the name tag in Japan) with a Japanese font. In essence, use 4 fonts (Chinese mainland, this can be the current one, Japanese, Taiwanese, Korean) and select them based on the language and area. But the problem for East Asia in OSM does not only lie in the fonts: The entire OSM rendering is completely European centered. For Japan (and the other east Asian countries; I guess also for other regions like India, Middle East etc) being usuable in OSM, the entire rendering for this countries should be rewritten from scratch. For example, in Japan and Korea the street crossings have names, in contrast to the street. The houses are arranged in house blocks and city blocks, which have to be shown. Also, for example, buddhist temples show a 卍 on the map, hot springs show a ♨. Some shops should be much more prominently displayed (for example the ubiquitious convenience stores) etc. I am not well versed with other regions of the world, but I guess they have similar problems. Keeping all that in mind, at some point I come to the conclusion that the only real possibilty for OSM to be used in these countries is to let the different countries create their own tile servers. They know best what should be displayed and until OSM does not offer a way to incorporate these changes on the main map (which is nonetheless the best way and a method for that should be persued, I think!), OSM in this countries will not be used in any way. As to your original question (Sorry for the long off topic text): Actually I cannot see much of a difference. The problems making it rather unreadable are the followings: 1. The fonts are too small: This works for latin text, and would work for CJK text if used on a higher resolution screen, but for currently used computer screens (and the rendering in the tiles), it is too small. Well, I am not a native CJK speaker, so this might be different for other people, but for me, it is too small and unreadlable. 2. Connected to the first issue: The hinting and anti-aliasing of the characters is bad. If you have such a small rendering of the font, rather use a nicely hinted bitmap font. I have created a comparision of this issue: First MS Mincho 11 pt with a 70% zoom in MS Word (where bitmap fonts are used), second MS Mincho with 11 pt and 200% zoom (no bitmap fonts at this zoom), afterwards shrinking it to 35%. Admitely, rather a bad method, but you can clearly see the difference. http://abload.de/img/comparisonidqpu.png 3. The white shadow makes it at some points even more difficult, but I cannot say that for sure. This is connected to the Chinese characters, Korean works relatively fine I guess (although I don't speak Korean). By the way, there is also a DroidSansJapanese font with Japanese characters. Hallo Chris, Dafür braucht man zwei unterschiedliche tags.

Re: [Talk-it] R: Nomi in sardo reloaded
The 'Map what's on the ground' rule appears along with other guidelines on the Good practice page. So in the case of North Cyprus, this would be the Turkish names. The specific rules are documented at WikiProject Cyprus#Disputed place names. ***In the case where there are multiple local names, then if the government with effective and sustained control of the area has an official source of names or an official stance on a naming dispute, then that name is default. For instance, Derry-Londonderry.*** When there is no clear sustained control of an area, such as Kosovo, special consideration will be needed on a case by case basis. (Kosovo now has independent government, recognised by many other countries, so this is now less relevant.) OpenStreetMap is not a forum for politics, but a means for understanding. Disputes are not to be carried out in the map, but in discussion. Any editor who does not abide by this, and does not respect agreements in the area, or ultimately the on the ground rule, risks losing the right to participate in OpenStreetMap. Contact one of the mediators above if you see this kind of behavior. ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

Re: [Talk-ca] GPS and Motorway links ...
Some updates on this issue: I contacted Martijn a while ago with the suggestion of running this as a Maproulette. He liked the idea but I haven't heard back in a while. He also asked me how many cases we're talking about and based on the Overpass query mentioned upthread I came to the conclusion that the number is actually not that high (maybe 400 cases in all of Canada at the most). Therefore I've started fixing the issue manually and already cleaned up all of Quebec. It took me several hours, but that's partly because you always discover other issues to take care of as you go along (e.g. missing motorway_junction, name vs. exit_to on those junctions etc.). I'll continue working on this in Ontario now and I encourage others to go ahead in the other provinces, too. Just run http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/1CIon the appropriate bounding box and then go through each of the spots that come up. If there is hi-res Bing imagery available the fix will be obvious; and if not common sense should still tell you if a segment is oneway=yes or oneway=no. I have added a oneway tag to every motorway_link segment, both to avoid any misunderstanding with the default and to allow me to track the progress on the Overpass map. Cheers, Harald. It's been a while but I think I cleaned up this problem in New Brunswick.Another problem in New Brunswick are ways that share a node at a highway overpass. If there is a grade separation then the ways do not intersect and they should not share a node. I think this is related to the Canvec imports in NB. I have fixed some of these but there are still more and I expect it is a problem in other regions too.Bernie.Sent from Samsung Mobile Original message From: Harald KliemsDate:01/12/2014 7:03 PM (GMT-04:00) To: Daniel Begin Cc: Talk-CA OpenStreetMap ,"Connors, Bernie (SNB)" Subject: Re: [Talk-ca] GPS and Motorway links ... [Talk-ca] Maritime Boundary
Hello! I have a question regarding the maritime boundary of Canada, specifically Newfoundland and Labrador. National maritime boundaries generally use the 12 nautical mile limit, unless otherwise specified. I see the boundary for the province (http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=7/48.283/-53.196) which is auto-generated by a bot. That seems fine, but there is another maritime boundary for the Province. However, this one does not appear to be correct. Take a look at this example - http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=14/47.7920/-52.7985. As you can see, the dashed line represents the boundary - in ID, it is noted as the maritime boundary. But that does not make sense - the line crosses the landmass, for one thing. It is also very poorly shaped. Is this supposed to be the actual maritime boundary? I don't think it is - the parts of the line appears to be for the Provincial boundary. If it is the Provincial boundary, shouldn't it follow the coastal boundary? If I am mistaken, let me know. I don't think that you are mistaken, but I don't think you have all of the facts either. The 12NM line does look to be one that was created automatically. It certainly wasn't surveyed by a local mapper. :-) Same for the inland maritime boundary. I looked at that one in more detail. Here's what I see going on. The boundary way is this one http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/30114485 It is also part of two relations. One relation is a civil boundary, the other is an administrative (provincial) Boundary ways can not be understood fully, or edited wisely, without understanding relations. I wouldn't edit any complex form, such as a boundary relation, with an editor other than JOSM. And not with any editor, on a mobile device. Today, the way appears badly drawn, and incomplete in tagging. I'll take a few guesses at why. The history of that way shows 28 revisions. The first one was the creation of the way, as an import from geobase in 2009. It was tagged as an administrative boundary (not a maritime boundary). Likely, this was the best data available to us at the time. With the currently available imagery, we can see that the imported boundary does not align with imagery, nor does it reflect some of the details in the current imagery. Revisions 2 through 25 have been redacted, due to edits by users who did not agree to the license change. The boundary may have had some improvements and corrections through those edits. Improved or otherwise, those edits are gone. Revision 26 shows that the redaction bot cleaned out the data that we were no longer entitled to keep. That left the way without tags. R27 in 2012 appears not to have directly affected the way. It may have edited an intersecting way? It was a large changeset. R28 in 2013 added the maritime tag you report. The maritime tag alone, is an unusual form. I don't think that it would be considered complete, unless combined with the tags of the parent relations. When compared with the 'bot-drawn 12nm maritime boundary, this way appears to be incorrect. It just doesn't seem to be far enough offshore to be a maritime boundary. When compared to http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/115038287 (from 2011, and a canvec import) the '485 way appears low resolution and poorly aligned. So there are are multiple imported boundaries here. Each were the probably best available at the time. Neither are perfect, and now the appear to somewhat duplicate each other, given the parent relations of '485. Hope that helps a bit. ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca

Re: [Talk-cz] RUIAN nad OSM
Tam to pak stejně musí někdo znalý revidovat.
