Re: [Talk-ko] Naming conventions in Korea
I have no real objection to the change, but I must point out that having Korean and English in the name=* tag has been extremely useful to me as a visitor to Korea. Other maps show only Korean. What I would like to see is an international version of the map which shows Korean and English for each object (street, shop, park, whatever) made from name:ko (name:en). There have been some experiments for this in the past, so maybe it will happen in the future. I am glad there has been some dialog on this. I wrote the wiki pages describing the naming convention in detail, but the original convention was chosen long ago based on the same decision made in Japan. Recently Japan has moved away from using Japanese and English in the name=* tag. Again, this is disappointing as the map is useful to me this way, however, hopefully similar functionality can be introduced in the future. I would recommend adding to the Wiki a note about name:ja and name:zh for Japanese and Chinese name tags too. I think ja and zh are the correct language codes. Best wishes, Andrew On Sun, 12 Oct 2014 23:14:26 Max wrote: There has been nobody coming forward with objections to change the naming convention. Re: [talk-ph] tracing individual rice paddies
I don't quite agree that mapping individual rice paddies as landuse=farm is the way to go. I think the whole rice farm should be mapped as a single object and then the walls/terraces should be mapped as a different object. Generally, yes I agree for not mapping individual paddies. But, there should be some exemptions, in the case of Ifugao rice terraces, in the Atlas of Ifugao [0], it was mentioned that the Ifugaos have a sophisticated property right system dating pre-colonial times where each rice paddy has distinct ownership status. Thus, each rice paddy maybe a separate parcel if we borrow the term to the current legal ownership system in the Philippines. Are there people here more knowledgeable with Ifugao culture confirm if this ownership system still exist? I think man_made=bund is a pretty good suggestion. If we all agree on this tag, then we should use it and then suggest it to the global community on the tagging mailing list. Should we be creating a wikpage for this? I also met Nick, a Wikipedian and OSM mapper[2] based in Lucena City, just to the east of Sariaya. I think having a Mapping Party in Sariaya would be good. The town center is quite compact and has a nice grid layout that makes assigning areas easy. Sariaya is around 3-4 hours away from Manila so it's quite accessible. Nick is also supportive of the idea. I think Ian Lopez can also come as well. Alternatively, we can also have a Mapping Party in Tayabas City[3] to the northeast. Hi Dave, Richrico should have responded. The Mapbox data team has a policy to respond to all questions from the community. I'm sorry he didn't, he has now, and we've reminded all members of our data team of this policy. This should no longer be an issue in the future and all of our data team policies are completely transparent and can be found on the wiki:http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mapbox#Data_Team_Guidelines The software is not being misused to insert errors into the OSM database, it was a mistake. Just like Keepright, Osmose, and JOSM, to-fix has false positives. It's unfortunate and we're actively working to reduce them in number but they happen. Looking at the imagery I can see how it might be thought they connect, especially when none of us are using google maps for verification, right? If there are large scale issues with the things to-fix is highlighting we should have a discussion about that and I'm open to suggestions. You can submit issues here:https://github.com/osmlab/to-fix/issues The discussion about local knowledge vs remote or armchair mapping and your stance on detrimental software is another one entirely. Re: [OSM-talk] Detrimental validation software
Well we don't, which is clearly a weakness of the system as is. It is clearly is asking too much of the individual mapper to actually know whom to talk to. I'm fairly sure that simply adding the necessary information in some form to the employed users page is the best solution, anything else requires the mapper to know where to look, which again is really asking too much. Engaging with the company in question is naturally not guaranteed to end with a satisfactory resolution and there is a whole range of possible places such a dispute could be escalated to (LC, LWG, OSMF board). However I am counting on the enlightened self interest of the organisations employing mappers that in general escalation will not be necessary. I've always used addr:suburb=coorparoo and in my early work (that I am still to correct/remove) addr:city=Brisbane. Something about nominatum having the geo context to know which city said suburb exists within. The city node over City Hall being that get context. Re: [talk-au] street addressing city or suburb?
Hi. In OSM (for Australia), suburb=town, which is admin_level=9 for admin boundaries. We don't define the boundary of the wider metropolitan area. To be honest I'm not sure of the value in adding this to addresses. The location of the address (within admin boundaries) will determine this, along with any street related to the address. That is, it's probably better to let routing software infer the town, rather than re-enter it for every address. - Ben Kelley. -- Ben Kelley Sent from my Nexus 7 On 14 Oct 2014 11:19, David Bannon dban...@internode.on.net wrote: As far as routing engines go, my guess is City=Town=Suburb, they would dump them all into one box and sort. [OSM-talk-ie] Townland Mapping in Ireland
Hi all, I wanted to let you all know (though some of you are aware) that we now have a wiki page setup that details the process of townland mapping in Ireland, from start to finish. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Ireland/Mapping_Townlands Included on this page are: - Some basic stats on the current qty of townlands in the OpenStreetMap database - A high level overview of the process from start to finish - An eight part video series (which contains 10 videos, I know) which goes into every detail of the process from start to finish on a stage-by-stage process. Each video is linked separately along with a link to the full playlist. The videos total close to 2.5 hrs of guides on every aspect of the process - Links to every tool and site used in the process - A table to add your name for the county you are actively mapping in (you can map in as many as you wish) - A FAQ which will grow over time as more questions come up - A list of links to other resources which are handy to have when mapping townlands This wiki page, and all of its contents were put together to increase the speed with which we are mapping these. Based on the current progress, we will not have complete coverage of the island of Ireland until 2025, so it is hoped that these aids will bring that down significantly. Is it doable that we could be finished before the 1916 celebrations in Mar 2016? With enough people contributing I would hope so. Mapping townlands is a slow process, but with more people we can get this over the finish line. For anyone interested in joining in, I would encourage you to review the materials on the wiki page before you start. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to send a mail to this list where everyone can see both the questions and more importantly, the answer. I would also ask, that if anyone is active on Twitter, please retweet the following: https://twitter.com/DaCor_ie/status/521778468665970688 Thanks, Dave aka DaCor on OSM aaka @DaCor_ie on Twitter ___ Talk-ie mailing list Talk-ie@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ie

___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-fr ___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-fr -- Christian Quest - OpenStreetMap France ___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-fr

Re: [OSM-ja] reconciling MLIT Shapefile with Japan Post CSV
Hi Tom, The common ID scheme is called 全国地方公共団体コード/Zenkoku Chiho-Kokyou Dantai Codes, literally meaning The National Code System for Local Public Bodies. I don't think there's an official English name for it, but anyway it's defined as a Japan's industry standard (JIS X 0402). For the columns of the postal-code csv, let's take the 1st line as a reference example: 01101,060 ,0600042,ホツカイドウ,サツポロシチユウオウク,オオドオリニシ(1-19チヨウ メ),北海道,札幌市中央区,大通西(1〜19丁目),1,0,1,0,0,0 The column 1: 01101 is the district's ID, as you mentioned, 2-3: 060 ,0600042 are the postal codes for the district, the former is now outdated short form, the latter is canonical, 7-9: 北海道,札幌市中央区,大通西(1〜19丁目) are the prefecture, city and district, street, respectively, 4-6: ホツカイドウ,サツポロシチユウオウク,オオドオリニシ(1-19チヨウメ) are the pronouciation for the pref./city-and-dist./st. resp. Let me omit the remainder: they are rather involved flags and won't be very important for OSM use. Lastly, the distinction bw. oogaki and kogaki wouldn't be serious, but I believe kogaki is a bit human- and machine-friendly; kogaki can easily be canonicalized into oogaki, but not vice versa. Hope it helps (and excuse me for a long post.) Regards, Noashi Tabuchi (tabuchi_nao...@trek.co.jp) (2014/10/12 1:25), Tom Lee wrote: Please excuse me for posting to this list in English. I am not a Japanese speaker, but have recently been examining the availability of Japanese open data for geocoding addresses. This process has been difficult due to my unfamiliarity with the language and character set. My hope is to share a summary of my work here and receive criticism from experts. My code can be found here: https://github.com/sbma44/japan_geodata_research My conclusions and the narrative behind them are present in the README.md file, which should display at the bottom of the page when you follow that link. In short: I was surprised to find that Japan Post and MLIT seem to use a shared ID scheme, allowing postal codes to be mapped, many-to-one, to the boundaries of administrative districts offered in a country-wide Shapefile by MLIT. It might be that this is already common knowledge -- if so, I would be glad to know that, too! If not, perhaps this will prove useful to others. I would be particularly glad to hear suggestions from Japanese speakers as to what each column in the postal code CSV should be properly called in English and/or in the existing OSM tagging scheme for Japan; and whether the difference between the oogaki and kogaki files offered by Japan Post represent a concern. Please do not hesitate to ask questions or point out problems with my analysis. [Talk-us] Second thoughts
Hello! My name is Tom Fistere and I go by CountryLoon on OSM. After about a week of editing I thought I should throw out a couple of questions and comments of what I am doing so far... I have started looking at the road typing throughout the state of Minnesota as it gives me an opportunity to study the status of the map statewide. I see areas that are well documented and drawn and then there are areas so neglected that the lines and imagery are needed some immediate help. I invite anyone to check out my editing job on the segment of MN 23 between St Cloud and Foley, MN as it was rebuilt to an expressway in 2013 and let me know how I did. A couple of questions, Minnesota hates concurrent highways. US 52 is concurrent with I 94 from St Paul, MN to Fargo, ND according to AASHTO but MNDoT refuses to sign the routing beyond US 52 FOLLOWS I 94 sign at the interchange in St Paul. A similar thing occurs with US 12 through the Twin Cities to the Wisconsin line. Should the map reflect the concurrency or not? Google chose to do it but since it is unsigned, I lean toward not showing it. Most of my information is coming from county GIS sites and DOT, are there other other sites I should be checking into when looking for information verification? So far my interest is in the road network but I am willing to branch off into recreational trails and such in the future. Thanks! Re: [Talk-us] Second thoughts
US 52 FOLLOWS I 94 to me means they are concurrent, even if Minnesota only has signs for I94 instead of I94/US52 So it is a matter of presentation, not facts. Here in Florida there are places where most signs list only one name, but periodically there will be references to other names sharing the same route.
It's in pretty wide use (35K uses), so I created a page in the wiki: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:unsigned_ref But I don't really know the details of usage or best practice, so I hope others can fix and add to what's there...
