Re: [Talk-ca] Calgary Area Trail Mapping Project

A lot of the tracks seem to be very old and may have come from this site:

 http://albertatrailmaps.ca
 http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:Catmp

or one similar to it. There are a few in Calgary that post GPS tracks for
 hiking

I don’t think there is any licensing issues as it is all user gathered
 data. Just GPS traces.

Hi all,
I can confirm that the data did come from there, and with the permission
of 'John' from Calgary Area Trails Project. Obviously this data might be
outdated by now, I am not really active on OSM anymore.

The trails are mostly ATV/Quad Trails, with some cycle trails thrown in.
Simon.

I don’t think it should be deleted. Poor Quality can be better than no quality.
Plus it seems there are a few mappers in the area that are slowly cleaning it
up.

Thanks

This looks like it came from sort of low quality import. Is OSM
allowed to use this data? Should it be deleted?

If there's any documentation about what the values mean in the datasource it
 would be helpful.

The import account hasn't agreed to the CTs. Is this an oversight, or are
there legal reasons preventing it from agreeing?

Hi all,

I've had a discussion with the CATMP publishers and they want us to
keep the data in OSM under the new CT/ODbL. So as soon as Simon
agrees for the CATMP account, that should be a good part of Alberta
sorted out. :-)

OK I've accepted the terms on behalf of CATMP. If someone else wants to
take over this 'ownership' of this account, otherwise I just lurk...

[Talk-ca] Calgary Area Trail Mapping Project

2011-11-06 Thread Paul Norman
I was looking at the new truck rendering layer at
http://www.itoworld.com/product/data/ito_map/main?view=160 and ran across an
import called the Calgary Area Trail Mapping Project. This is, as far as I
can tell, the only significant use of hgv=* between Vancouver and Toronto.
Does anyone know anything about it? The hgv=* (and other access) tags on
http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/26574987 seem somewhat out of place.

That import account is operated by Mungewell, who we see here once in

The Calgary Area Trail Mapping Project is tied in with a local 4X4
club from what I recall... I was in communication with one member a
number of years ago. Most of the trails they are adding are for off
highway vehicles, ie. four wheel drives, quads, or smaller more
maneuverable machines.

I ran across some trails from the project when out on a week long
horseback riding camp...

http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=52.0671916007996lon=-115.968310832977zoom=14

The roads there are tagged as hgv=no, and are indeed not suitable for
most passenger cars.

The hgv classification possibly being mistaken for High
Ground-clearance Vehicle rather than Heavy Goods Vehicle.

More appropriate would probably be the TRACK, TRACKTYPE and SMOOTHNESS tags.

There's no ACCESS value for OHV (Off Highway Vehicles)

As with many tags, the use of the tags by the author may not be what
the intended us was...

The project is mostly aimed at building a Garmin format map, and I think
that are using some of the Garmin tags to convey other information - such
as 'hgv=no' to indicate that the route is not suitable for 'normal'
driving.

I did do the initial import, but am busy with other project and we're also
a little out of date compared to their latest version.

Simon.

Are you okay with the tagging being fixed where it hasn't been touched by
subsequent users? Right now it's rendering on the ITO truck layer as being
suitable for a truck (since that's how it's tagged)

would be helpful.
