One bacolod mapper gave me a tip of this useful site. wikiloc.com It has several traces we can possibly use. http://wikiloc.com/wikiloc/map.do#lt=11.695273ln=122.102051z=11k=1tab=0 This is one the source of tracks some mappers of Bacolod are using. [OSM-talk] Potential Datasources wiki pages
I notice that after the user registration changes, all the Potential_Datasources pages in the wiki now need to be extra careful about who the audience is. There probably should now be three columns on each of the pages, because there are three classes of users: the old users (CC-By-SA), the new users (CC-By-SA + ODbL) and PD users. A careless user will just click through the registration pages, and then if they see it mentioned on the wiki that the given datasource is ok (which was assessed for the old users group only) they'll use it, not thinking about their specific contributor terms. On Wed, May 12, 2010 at 5:13 PM, Robin Paulson robin.paul...@gmail.com wrote: are there any issues with mass contacting either (a) everyone who has set their location as in NZ, or (b) everyone who has made an edit within NZ? is there an AUP for osm which forbids this? and if not, is it possible to do this programmatically either through the wiki mail or the osm mailer? Let's break these down into two parts, the social and technical aspects. The social aspect is quite complex. I can see both sides. In the United States, we had people sign up for something on a wiki page and then we used OSM's internal message system to contact them. This is something we only felt right doing because presumably they'd signed up. I've also contacted people in my local area manually about some local activities, and I know others have done the same. Of course, such a thing could easily be abused, so I'd say it should be used sparingly. As for the technical aspect... There are two parts to that- the collection of usernames and the message sending. The request to collect/send to lots of people in an area is a feature that's been requested and discussed, and there are lots of ways to gather this data, but all of them have problems. You might go through profiles looking for people who have tagged their location, or you might look at commits and determine whose been editing in an area. As for sending mass mail, there's no programatic way. There's no API to do it, but there are those of us on this list (myself included) who have written scripts to do it in an automated fashion. My code is based on another OSMer's code. I don't think either of the scripts are posted online anywhere, for obvious reasons. It's not hard to write, actually. - Serge cheers ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

I quite like the logo. It adapted very nicely to a derivation I made for my upcoming Minneapolis mapping party: http://www.mapminnesota.org/osm-mn.jpg I'm not sure I could change your suggested logo to make it unique to my area and still retain links back to OSM to identify with the greater cause. having a real map as part of the logo offers some nice opportunities indeed! But there is a number of inherent problems with actual map data inside the logo, which is why I discarded any of my designs containing it: - as Steve said already - there is too much going on inside there. - then there is the issue with recognition, almost nobody would recognize certain elements clearly (as well as a certain outline) - scaling makes it impossible to retain the nice details you want to apply to the logo my approach would be to use other means like typography to indicate association. The free font would make this very easy to create a variation like this: *logo* OpenStreetMap -Minnesota- and then maybe use a certain color that you are already using on your project homepage. A user can edit the cycle 'ways' and rate preferences for different ways. CycloPath can then generate preferable routes for that user. Hi all, Forgive me for parachuting in. I'm the project leader for Cyclopath, and a Google Alert for that search term led me to this thread. Cyclopath does do subjective routing, in two ways. First, cyclists can rate the bikeability of roads and trails on a block-by-block basis, and these preferences are taken into account when routing. Second, when you request a route, you can give requirements in terms of bikeability vs. distance and which tags you prefer and disprefer. I believe this is the same subjective-over-objective philosophy another commenter in this thread recommended. We also support a number of annotations within the map: collaboratively edited notes and tags (where tags are the traditional definition: words or phrases that are attached to a map feature), bikeability ratings, and we recently added discussions to the map. Cyclopath is a research project and has led to several well-received papers in the human-computer interaction and collaborative systems domains. See http://reidster.net/papers.html for more. The issue is the small size as you say. :) The concern is not of a technical nature. Even SVGs get rendered to pixels or dots in the end - no matter what. I'm just noting that the current logo really under-performs when it comes to scaling, not only at extremely small sizes, but already at reasonably small sizes: you start loosing all details on the map as well as the 1s and 0s at about 64x64 pixels. I would argue that this isn't an acceptable criteria for a proper logo. I'm making Oo Draw files that just have the page layout, and all the basic map info, (legend, scale, title, directory, copyright line, border. # markers) The Mapgen.pl is for getting the osm map details out into SVG. So the ideas is that Oo is simpler to use than Inkscape, where simple 'prntScrn' can be done, where the monitor resolution is greater or equal to the actual page size. The purpose is to be able to print out free maps and give to any place that will make it available. So im looking for/making templates for cyclists passing through town/ walkers looking for tourist attractions / pub 'inspectors' looking for pubs. And many other templates, were its easy to move the legend around and draw arrows add in custom place markers. Is there a wiki page that organizes this info around? Re: [OSM-talk] new logo
I do agree that the current logo is too much and has problems scaling down to favicon uses or being used in som abstract forms (e.g. limited colours). It's worth looking at the OSMF entries and the Discussion (on the talk page) http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Foundation/Logo http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Foundation/LogoIf a fresh view/analysis was presented as a talk (although aren't talks getting arranged now?) then I would suggest it goes at the end of a section of talks. That way raised points could then be discussed over informal conversations, maybe during the lunch break or something. Everyone could confirm the most important points for the OSM and OSMF logos and look at entries given, maybe with some sketches added based on points the discussion brings up. We could then have a quick vote at the end of the break on the selection coming out of the discussions. We have to be aware that if we make a democratic process then it has to be a suitable democratic process and probably include all OSMF members allowing them time to vote without attendance. Alternatively (and my suggestion) is we just have a committee make choice, the committee is whoever joins the debate during the SOTM break rather than stuffing their face and talking to other people. For those that can't attend, they can make comments on the wiki in advance or watch the web cast and irc/twitter comments to Girona. Personally I really like the mapzen logo [1] to give an example (might be also problematic for scaling, might need different versions for different scales, but it is estetically good because of the reduced color set). cheers, Martin [1] http://mapzen.cloudmade.com/images/mapzen/mapzen-logotype.png ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk -- Gregory o...@livingwithdragons.com http://www.livingwithdragons.com ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[OSM-talk] Help to import Rio de Janeiro city data to OSM - misaligned shapefiles
Hi there, I just managed to get the permission to import import the city government data into OSM. However, I'm not able to import it to JOSM successfully. The data is on different shapefiles, that for greater convenience I mirrored on my webserver: http://nighto.net/rio.zip http://nighto.net/rio/ I found out that the easiest way to have an .osm file editable on JOSM would be using Iván's ogr2osm.py [1] and it worked out pretty well. However, the tracks are misaligned with the tracks I already have collected with GPS (which is aligned to the Yahoo! imagery, so they're not bad tracks). Please check this screenshot: http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/7035/capturadetelak.png In this example, i converted the ciclovias.* files (cycleways) to .osm, opened in JOSM and downloaded this area. The shapefile converted way is selected (red) and the OSM (captured with GPS) is in dark grey. Any ideas? I don't think that the government data is misaligned like that. Also, selecting all the ways on the converted osm layer on JOSM and drag over until they align with something that already exists could work out, but there's probably a better way to do it. I thought about creating a shell script to add/subtract the lat/lon numbers on all nodes, but maybe someone would come out with a magical conversion that would work out perfectly :) Thanks a lot!

[talk-au] Ways incorrectly tagged as admin boundaries?
Hi, I've come across a handful of Ways with ABS data attributions that are (probably incorrectly) marked as administrative boundaries. They are: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/14191309 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/13807736 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/14192887 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/16420310 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/28262742 All of them are in southern WA and were edited by the same user. Given the au.gov.abs tags, could this be the result of a misfiring script? A couple of them (notably 14191309) also have other tags that look wrong.
Man muss für jedes Land erst einmal nachschlagen, was urban bedeutet.
