Thanks to all of you who have contributed to our ideas page (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/GSoC_Project_Ideas_2012), which supported the application. Over the next few weeks we can expect potential students to review the ideas page and contact us to seek clarification on ideas or guidance on how to develop them. Ian Dees has set a good example in responding to such requests positively, and with a steer that a good start is to learn a bit about mapping. I would be grateful if you would again review the ideas list and provide any clarifications that may help students in producing a project proposal from them. I would also like to hear from anyone that would be prepared to act as a mentor on this year's programme. I will do a bit more work on a wiki page that I have started on the process I propose to follow for this year's GSoC (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/Processes), and send another update email so you know what we will be doing. We still would like to have subdomain. I we can wait for that. However they pointed out that a dot in domain with the openstreetmap word in it is not against OSM policies, and we are free to use it (as long as we stick with OSM data and licenses). So now our server is running on http://openstreetmap.org.in That's really great news :-) You are wonderful. You are announcing it after doing it. No promise, no we will do it ... [Talk-in] Shop icon and names
shop icons showed up in the repo. I am adding a test shop. If it works we are in business. Great! Now if we have different symbol for all shops, then can we skip type of shop in name. Let us say, we have three different symbol for cloth, shoe, Computer, then there are three shops named: Punjab Cloth House, Punjab Shoes, and Punjab Computer Services, then can we write name only Punjab with three different icons? If no, then having only one symbol for shop is OK, and name will tell about type of shop. Too many symbols might confuse users. -- H.S.Rai ___ Talk-in mailing list Talk-in@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-in

[Talk-in] [OT] OSMaps
Does anybody tried to purchase OSM (Open Series Map) from SoI. Can share his / her experience or information about level of openness / restrictions. In the 1st link below, I could not get sense of scale, if they are selling in vector format. http://www.surveyofindia.gov.in/osm/osm.html http://www.surveyofindia.gov.in/MTR/soivector/soi/form.html Does images sold by NRSA (as written in article http://www.ias.ac.in/currsci/may25/articles10.htm) are really non-restrictive. -- H.S.Rai ___ Talk-in mailing list Talk-in@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-in

[Talk-in] Print quality map
In an effort to produce printout of good quality map with data we collected during gillMapping, I was able produce .svg map using osmarender, that looks good on screen. See gill.png from: http://gndec.ac.in/~hsrai/gillMapping/tmp/ or try gill.svg in Inkscape The pdf produced by printing from printing command of Inkscape, looks very bad, with few symbol very very large. Can you suggest me way to produce good quality pdf and to produce printout of good quality on paper of big size (say A1). -- H.S.Rai ___ Talk-in mailing list Talk-in@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-in
