Hi All,
I am pleased to announce that OSM has been accepted to participate in
this year's Google Summer of Code programme
(http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/org/google/gsoc2012/osm).

Thanks to all of you who have contributed to our ideas page
(http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/GSoC_Project_Ideas_2012), which
supported the application.

Over the next few weeks we can expect potential students to review the
ideas page and contact us to seek clarification on ideas or guidance
on how to develop them.
Ian Dees has set a good example in responding to such requests
positively, and with a steer that a good start is to learn a bit about
mapping.

I would be grateful if you would again review the ideas list and
provide any clarifications that may help students in producing a
project proposal from them.
I would also like to hear from anyone that would be prepared to act as
a mentor on this year's programme.

I will do a bit more work on a wiki page that I have started on the
process I propose to follow for this year's GSoC
(http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/Processes),
and send another update email so you know what we will be doing.

Thanks again for your support.

Regards

Graham.

But the code is open source
http://code.geograph.org.uk/geograph_svn.html

You can see here:
http://geo.hlipp.de/howto/
how the project was adapted for Germany

Its slightly out of date, but the idea is basically the same.

You can now instead use the Germany branch as a starting point. That
has multi-language, and also MGRS support. Looks like india fits into
4 UTM zones.

Don't misunderstand me, it wont be trivial. But it is certainly doable

We will of course offer what advice we can. And I sure Hansjörg from

Blue tooth does not work on LG GW620.

Salesman confirmed after consulting someone that A-GPS requires Internet.

So with limited time and energy to compare and explore, I purchased
Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

Has A-GPS and GPS, A-GPS work only through GPRS, and not through WiFi.

Though Symbian is OpenSource, and Gammu support maximum handsets from
Nokia, but for this model it support only info.

http://wammu.eu/phones/nokia/?page=3
http://wammu.eu/phones/nokia/2929/

So using this mobile on Linux PC/Laptop is not possible, sad :-( and
my bad luck.

[Talk-in] A-GPS as GPS

2010-05-29 Per discussione H.S.Rai
For mapping mobiles with GPS are seems to be good resource. My question is:

It seems that Android will rule and Linux bases mobiles may not become
a reality.

Can A-GPS be used as GPS?

Background of this question is as:

In market there are many Android (unable to find Linux bases) based mobiles:

LG GW620 Rs. 15500/-
Samsung Glaxy Spica GT i5700 13000/-
Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 31500/-

All are having A-GPS, and sales man says one need to subscribe and pay
monthly for use of navigational through A-GPS.

However, my impression is that A-GPS should also be able to used as
GPS (not working indoor and long fixing time), but sales person can
confirm that.

Is there anyone who uses A-GPS as GPS and confirm that A-GPS on such
mobiles can be used as GPS or vendor has restricted that option.

[Talk-in] Naming in Hindi / Punjabi

2009-12-10 Per discussione H.S.Rai
I hope within a week or so, OSMI will able to render in local
language. By default, will it render in English or Hindi.

What about regional languages?

How we should name?

At moment name has been entered in Hindi and English for one tag, for
many features, like:

name: Hindi name (English Name)

I feel that is not the right approach.

We should tag:

name English name
name:in Hindi Name
name:pb Punjabi Name

Then rendering rule should able render as per our choice.

Let us decide how to name so that we get desired result when OSMI
render Indic fonts.

I disagree. This is very helpful as it helps both english literate and
vernacular literate to read the maps simultaneously. Yes it clutters the map

The multi language tagging surely helps. Unless we have multiple
language renderer's this will not be helpful.
The right question to be asked is should we have one renderer per language
if yes then how do we implement it?

No.I guess fancy URLs will help web crawlers which can give us more
visibility on search and give hits. I am working on the quick links page
which will contain links to cities / states and places that are well mapped
and might interest people. Ex:- Coimbatore Golf Course or Tirupati Hills.
This can also be a place for visibility where other people in the community
can know what has been mapped well.

[Talk-in] Selling OSM

2009-12-04 Per discussione H.S.Rai
I observed many parts of India has nice OSM. To popularise (sell) it I
suggest take it on paper, flex print, display it on hoardings; in
colleges, schools, bus-stands, railway stations, post offices. Market
it, sell it. Get it published on back of school copies, registers.
Show your office, house using this on your visiting cards, show venue
of marriages on invitation card, and so on. Of course with prominent
display of its website, authorisation to copy it, distribute it.

No necessarily distribute it free, charge as much you can. And if
possible donate 10% to OSMF or its mappers ;-)

shop icons showed up in the repo. I am adding a test shop. If
it works we are in business.

Great!

Now if we have different symbol for all shops, then can we skip type
of shop in name.

Let us say, we have three different symbol for cloth, shoe, Computer,
then there are three shops named:

Punjab Cloth House, Punjab Shoes, and Punjab Computer Services,

then can we write name only Punjab with three different icons?

If no, then having only one symbol for shop is OK, and name will tell
about type of shop. Too many symbols might confuse users.
