Re: [talk-ph] Action for Economic Reforms OSM Data Model

2021-09-24 Per discussione maning sambale
Just one quick note, please split building tags from other features.
For example, in educational institutions, you have both amenity,
operator combined with building:levels, floor:material, roof:material.
The spreadsheet seems to indicate this should be added for each
feature which is not good practice. Also, Im not sure if you did so
already, make sure you align with what HOTOSM PH previously did in
Pampanga.
Just looking at the educ insti tab, it looks like it's not aligned
with what they did in Pampanga.

Re: [talk-ph] Rollback of admin boundary edits in the Philippines due to incompatible license (was Re: Alaminos Barangay borders)

2020-08-14 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi everyone,

This work is finished. It took a while due to the complexity of the revert.
What this means right now is that place geocoding (via nominatim ) is
less accurate and the visual map for boundaries has less details.
However, our map is much better without incompatible licensed data!
Thanks to all who helped!

I'm not sure what else I can do here, you mentioned that you already
contacted 3 users and there was no response.
Secondly, these LGUs are likely swamped with work due to the Taal
response, asking about this issue at this time seems inappropriate.

[talk-ph] [Tabang-AI] HRSL derived vector polygons for coordinating/tasking mapping (V1)

2019-09-09 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi,

We have just released 2 vector polygons covering most populated areas
in the Philippines through this Tabanga-AI project.
To download the data, please visit the repo [0].

The purpose of this dataset is to efficiently coordinate remote
mapping by using the data to identify areas to map via Tasking
Manager.
You can see this in action in our test in Camiguin [1]. Based on our
quick evaluation, using this data can cover up to 95% of a certain
region's populated/settlement areas [2]

We encourage everyone to use this data when creating tasks/projects
for organized mapping. Top of my head, I'm thinking of UP-RI, HOTOSM
Philippines, Map.ph, YouthMapper chapters.

As always, we are open for feedback or further collaboration with anyone.

worked on the project especially @GOwin and his CWTS++ crew!
Detailed notes here:

tl;dr We increased road coverage in Camiguin by 36%!

We will proceed with next actions on this initiative in the coming days.

Re: [OSM-talk] Announcing the Tabang-AI initiative

2019-08-12 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi y'all,

Putting on record that I was part of those who requested FB to
generate road detection for the Philippines there are a few more
people involved.
I defer to these individuals if they want to put forward their names.

While I agree that a few people does not necessarily represent the
whole local community,
I believe those we talked to initially were the most active both in
mapping and community-building in the Philippines.

As mentioned in the announcement, organized mapping effort will only
be initiated if there are local groups (local in the geographic region
they want to map) willing to manage and coordinate.
However, individual mappers who want to use existing detections
provided by FB can directly map their own mapping patches via RapiD.

This is great information. May we get a public record of this discussion?
I was not personally aware of exemptions in the guidelines provided by the
OSMF:

The above statements does not add up to me based on the previous statement
that this is a volunteer effort though.

There is a list:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Link_roads_between_different_highways_types
But not everyone agrees. ;)

Agree with Eugene here. It depends on the traffic-flow and general purpose
of that segment.

[talk-ph] Mapping private information in Lupang Arenda

2019-01-04 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi everyone,

Over the last couple of days we noticed several mappers in Lupang
Arenda Taytay/Cainta are adding names of residents on buildings.
We have been reviewing and fixing a lot of theses edits [0]. I
believe Erwin also added comments in some changesets.

We are not sure what is the purpose of these edits, our hunch is that
the data is being used for a community based land tenure project.
While using OSM for land rights is a commendable endeavor, private
information such as names of residents should not be in OSM.
We are requesting the Data Working Group to redact these data ASAP.

If anyone knows about this initiative, we would love to talk to the
organizers so that we can help them how to use OSM without
compromising privacy.

What happened to the metro manila work [0]? Before proceeding to
other cities I personally prefer they should wrap-up previous
initiatives so we can understand what worked, what doesn't and how
previous experience/issues (if any) can be mitigated.

A good example is Kaart's and ProjectNOAH's wrapup notes posted in this list.

You shouldn't do this. OSM is open to all and even if you got consent
from the respective PWD to map their community, you shouldn't put
personal information into OSM.
You can of course collect them and manage data in your own internal DB.

Desktop GIS.
Use QGIS and threejs plugin.
See for example:

Or build your own:

Quick update.

Big thanks to everyone who helped with the 2 projects for Mayon Volcano.

We already shared the data (through the HOT export tool) to the
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS)
this is the government institution who supports the local government
units in responding to the disaster.
Also thanks to Erwin for providing updated GPS maps, which is now used
by people on the ground.

No new requests for mapping at the moment since we have covered the
designated danger zones (PDZ + EDZ).

Ervin,

Thanks, this is so much bigger than the EDZ [0]. I feel its too much
too big AOI for mapping.
If we can have detailed poly that identifies at risk areas, that's much better.

Thanks everyone for finishing the task really quick! We have 100%
mapped and 57% validated as of this time.
Also thanks to the mappers before us who already mapped a lot before this event.

We created a new task to include the expanded danger zone [0],
reference material [1].
Compared to the previous task, this needs more effort since these
areas are more populated than the permanent danger zone.

This continues to be a local response, but anyone is welcome to participate

[talk-ph] Mayon Volcano Eruption Jan 2018

2018-01-15 Per discussione maning sambale
Mayon Volcano in the Philippines erupted this week. Local community
is mapping from pre-event imagery.
This is not yet a full HOT Activation. We are still assessing the
needs of responders, but if anyone has spare time,
we have a task [0] ready for the permanent danger zone. This mapping
is focused on mapping infrastructure (roads and buildings) and
waterways.

Re: [talk-ph] intro to Kaart initiative in PH

2018-01-15 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi Erwin,

Thanks for leading this work. As many of you know, I work in Mapbox
and my primary focus is to make OSM navigable.
I wonder what would be the best approach in the context of driving in
the Philippines.
Would love to share notes and approaches. One thing I have in mind (I
shared this during the meetup), while every country
has specific nuances tagging, there is a danger of making the tags too
specific as its difficult to create routing engines for each country.

[talk-ph] Fwd: [OSM-talk] Redacting 75, 000 street names contributed by user chdr

Subject: [OSM-talk] Redacting 75,000 street names contributed by user chdr
To: Talk Openstreetmap ,
"talk...@openstreetmap.org Openstreetmap"

Hi,

in 2010 I was privately contacted by another OSM user with the
suspicion that user "chdr" might be copying names from Google maps
(there were few "easter eggs" in Oman that were only on Google and not
in the real world, and they suddenly popped up on OSM). "chdr" was
contacted at the time, but continued unfazed. In 2013 another mapper
lodged a complaint with DWG about edits by chdr, and I emailed chdr
asking him about his sources. At that point chdr stopped mapping. He
never replied about his sources though, even when I set an ultimatum (of
31st August 2013) threatening to remove all names he contributed if he
can't tell us his source. We do have to assume that all names
contributed by chdr are copyright violations.

(chdr has added names all around the world, making a harmless survey
unlikely.)

For various reasons I neglected to act on this, and was only reminded
now, 5 years later, when DWG received a complaint from a user in Brazil
where chdr has even used "source=google" occasionally. (But as I said,
the suspicion is that Google was used throughout.)

I have now compiled a list of all street names that were contributed by
chdr and are still visible today; we're talking about almost 75,000
street names world wide. The most affected countries are:

  18023 "United States of America"
  16345 "Mexico"
  15109 "Brazil"
   6791 "RSA"
   2802 "Spain"
   2614 "Australia"
   1923 "Argentina"
   1673 "Nigeria"
   1569 "India"
   1441 "Canada"
954 "Malaysia"
744 "Botswana"
717 "Philippines"
619 "Indonesia"
553 "Italy"
414 "Turkey"
290 "Hungary"
284 "Chile"
250 "Kenya"
127 "Saudi Arabia"
107 "Paraguay"
106 "Panama"
100 "Morocco"

I've left out those countries with less than 100 affected ways.

For the US, I can break it down by state:

   5696 "Arizona"
   5116 "Texas"
   2294 "New York"
   1164 "District of Columbia"
740 "Iowa"
494 "Colorado"
416 "New Jersey"
339 "Illinois"
268 "Michigan"
239 "Pennsylvania"
181 "Missouri"
147 "Georgia"
129 "New Mexico"
123 "North Carolina"
115 "California"
106 "Virginia"

The breakdown for Mexico:

   7749 "Baja California"
   2084 "Puebla"
   1964 "Chihuahua"
   1539 "Coahuila"
   1161 "Mexico"
   1040 "Chiapas"
342 "Tamaulipas"
241 "Sonora"
185 "San Luis Potosi"
129 "New Mexico"

and Brazil:

  10904 "São Paulo"
   2605 "Paraná"
945 "Rio de Janeiro"
270 "Rio Grande do Sul"
154 "Goiás"

and South Africa:

   4422 "Gauteng"
750 "KwaZulu-Natal"
600 "Eastern Cape"
439 "Western Cape"
400 "Northern Cape"
179 "Mpumalanga"

- each time leaving out a couple others under 100.

We believe that only names, not geometries have been taken from other
maps so we'll remove and redact the names only. In identifying "names
contributed by chdr" I took care to really only pick up the names that
were introduced by them, not names that were there before, and also when
chdr split a way that had a name I will make sure that the newly created
way doesn't count as "named by chdr". Additionally, I have ignored those
cases where chdr simply performed a TIGER expansion (St->Street etc) of
a name that was there before.

My process has two weak points (that I am aware of):

1. It doesn't properly "follow" a chrdr-contributed name through way
splits performed by other users; if someone has split a way created by
chdr, then the name will remain on the bit that was created by this
user. This is somewhat unsatisfying but after having manually checked a
random sample I think the problem is small enough to be ignored.

2. It is possible that, like with a recent case in Switzerland where I
had to do a similar redaction, some of these chdr-contributed names will
have been confirmed by others in a survey, i.e. someone else surveyed
the area and checked the name, but saw no need to change it in any way
since it was already correct. Sadly my process will now remove the name
even though, had the name not been there in the first place, that person
could have added the name. This is not nice but I don't see how it could
be avoided.

Here's a list of way IDs affected, with country and state:

http://www.remote.org/frederik/tmp/chdr.details

I am trying to keep the damage to OSM to a minimum while at the same
time respecting copyright. If anyone wants to spot check a few names in
their area and can suggest a refinement of the process that would leave
more names in place because there's reason to assume they are legit, I'm
all ears.

It has been suggested to me that

[Talk-us] Request to review edits by Zowie Polie

Hi,

Our team noticed Zowie Polie [0] deleting/modifying/adding major
roads, service roads and buildings, random fictional features such as
parks etc. over the US. We think a lot of her/his edits are
suspicious. See changeset here [1]. This user also had a block from
DWG [2].

We commented on one of the changesets and reported the incident to
DWG. While we fixed many of the changesets already. Would love for
the community to review if there are other data that broke the map.

[Talk-us] SEO Damage to OSM

Hi,

Our team came across duplicated highways like this:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/144422919/.
Based on the latest changeset, this is probably due to the revertion
of the SEO spam.
We documented the issue here: https://github.com/mapbox/mapping/issues/310

[Talk-us] MS Buildings (Re: Talk-us Digest, Vol 112, Issue 25)

2017-06-16 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi,

My colleague Chethan played around with visualizing MS buildings in 3D:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Chetan_Gowda/diary/41705

Webmap here:
https://osmlab.github.io/ms-building-import/#15.72/39.2862/-76.6135/-1.2/60

The quality is generally good, but there are spots where small
buildings are not orthogonal like these residential areas in Orlando

https://osmlab.github.io/ms-building-import/#18.4/28.45983/-81.38851/53/27
https://osmlab.github.io/ms-building-import/#17.36/28.50154/-81.49417/33.8/27

Obviously, this shouldn't be imported wholesale, so I suggest to
whoever plans to do import/conflate them should review the quality of
each data.

[Talk-us] Unreviewed TIGER in Jacksonville (was Re: Talk-us Digest, Vol 114, Issue 22)

2017-06-02 Per discussione maning sambale
While our team is working on Jacksonville, we found unreviewed TIGER
(v1, tiger:reviewed:=no) in some areas.
See example here:
https://github.com/mapbox/mapping/issues/300#issuecomment-305399104
We are fixing them as we encounter them in the TM tasks.

We are also reviewing the extent of effort to fix this once we are
done with building tracing.
If there are existing efforts to fix in TIGER data in Jacksonville our
team can help as well.

[talk-ph] Usability of translating Wikidata world places to Tagalog/Filipino

2017-05-04 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi,

I started this conversation in OSMPH slack but would like to open
discussion in this list. Also apologies if this is not entirely
related to OSM but a very close project since as per Eugene's
assessment wikidata community is not very active in the Philippines.

Our team at Mapbox is pushing for completing Wikidata places
translation to several languages [0] including Filipino/Tagalog. The
aim is to connect the two projects and leverage from the data that
both project have (location in OSM, translations in Wikidata). [1]

Eugene posted suggestions, here's our conv in Slack

maning [April 26th at 10:49 AM]
@here what's our best practice for name tagalog? We use english names right?

seav [Apr 26]
We should use the Tagalog translation if it is available and well
attested. Examples: Maynila (Manila), Kabite (Cavite), Bulakan
(Bulacan), Hilagang Samar (Northern Samar), Alemanya (Germany),
Estados Unidos (United States), Hapon (Japan), Tsina (China).

My question is while this is desirable, is it essential for locals in
the Philippines or travelling abroad to use a navigation app with
translated places in Filipino/Tagalog. In most cases Filipinos are
comfortable with using English names for places (e.g. "Germany"
instead of "Alemanya")

To: h...@openstreetmap.org, sotm-a...@openstreetmap.org,
talk...@openstreetmap.org

Dear all,

The State of the Map Asia 2017 working group is pleased to announce a
call for logo designs. We need your help to build a strong
recognisable logo for State of the Map Asia 2017 (SotM Asia)
conference taking place in Kathmandu, Nepal. The conference is
OpenStreetMap’s annual gathering of the community, interested parties
and others in Asia.

We have put together a Design Brief which outlines what we were
looking for in a logo. Entrants could be an individual or team of
people, or even a design company.

All entries will be considered to give copyright ownership to SotM so
that it can be used across different mediums. Entries have to appear
on the wiki page State Of The Map Asia 2017/Logo entries by 23:59 UTC
(before midnight) on 15th of April 2017. The SotM Asia 2017 working
group will decide by vote the logo to go with.

The winning entry will be rewarded with one full weekend ticket to
State of the Map Asia 2017!

For guidelines and other details, please refer to
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Call_for_logo_sotm_asia_2017

[Talk-us] Duplicated buildings in the Miami building import

2017-02-27 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi,

To the import team, great job in importing the buildings in Miami.
While validating the changesets using
[OSMCha](https://osmcha.mapbox.com/), I came across one
[changeset](https://osmcha.mapbox.com/46393859/) where I found some
overlapping and duplicate buildings.

Please advise mappers to run the validator in JOSM before uploading
the data to OSM. Also, there maybe cases when the mapper indeed ran
the Validator but did not detect any errors. To fix this, always
uncheck 'Use ignore list' in your JOSM preferences. See this:

[Talk-us] Open Building datasets for San Jose, Fremont and Berkeley

2017-02-21 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi,

Recently we came across three open buildings datasets for San Jose[1],
Berkeley[2] and Fremont[3]. We have evaluated the quality of each of
the datasets and found them to have good coverage and building
extrusions match recent satellite imagery. We have updated the wiki[4]
with the above sources for California.

- San Jose:
https://cloud.githubusercontent.com/assets/1933377/22969874/09901660-f396-11e6-93a9-225dfab1ccc9.png
- Berkeley:
https://cloud.githubusercontent.com/assets/1933377/22469786/28cb43b4-e7f3-11e6-979c-0fcc27cea67d.png

The datasets for San Jose and Berkeley also contain building heights
and that of San Jose contains building parts as well.

- Building part details in San Jose:

Our team would be happy to collaborate if you are open to importing
these datasets to OpenStreetMap.

[Talk-us] Creating dual-carraigeways where there are existing oute relations

2017-02-15 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi,

Our team at Mapbox has been adding turn lanes in several cities in the
US. In some cases, bi-directional roads need to be converted to
dual-carriageways when there is a physical separation. However, we
are finding it difficult to create dual-carriageways since most major
roads already have route relations and there is a danger of breaking
route relations.

We are documenting the process here:
https://github.com/mapbox/mapping/issues/180#issuecomment-279367407
Would love the community's inputs on how we can avoid relation breakage.

Re: [Talk-TW] Working together in improving Taiwan roads

2016-11-07 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi,

Final update on this realignment effort.

We completed the realignment project by validating 42 TM projects
covering (~70%) of mainland Taiwan.
See srividya's diary here:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/srividya_c/diary/39839

Along with this, we also updated the offset database for areas we
encountered that Bing imagery has an offset, see:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/BharataHS/diary/39752

One more cleanup task is needed which is the overlap of buildings and
roads this is available as a tofix task for the community:
http://osmlab.github.io/to-fix/#/task/crossinghighwaysandbuildings

We will work on this in the coming weeks but the majority of
realigning effort is done.

In behalf of the Mapbox data team, we would like to thank the TW
community for supporting this project.
We are looking forward for more collaboration in the future. Thank again!

Hi,

Related to our previous email and diary, we have been realigning roads
for several areas in Taiwan. Last week, we have modified 2,500 km of
roads. Here's a map:

https://api.mapbox.com/styles/v1/maning/cisit2qu700392wnv88ytg6bs.html?fresh=true=true_token=pk.eyJ1IjoibWFuaW5nIiwiYSI6IlhjWGNfdTQifQ.ras0nImWG638BCDSxU8bqw#6.78/23.750/121.673

You may have seen some of our edits around your neighbourhood. If you
notice any issues don't hesitate to comment on any of our changesets.
Some of you did already [0 & 1], thank you very much!

After last week's trial run, we are going to continue our realigning
by focusing on areas that has updated imagery from Mapbox Satellite.
We invite everyone to join.
We coordinate using github: https://github.com/mapbox/mapping/issues/233

[Talk-us] (Cleanup of LABuilding import (was Re: [Imports] Updates:LA County building import (Los Angeles, California, USA))

2016-08-01 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi,

After validation via TM [0], we will implement a series of cleanup[1]
for several issues during the import. Details on each cleanup will be
documented in the respective ticket and also updated in the wiki later
on. I'm reading the Automated Edits CoC [2] right now and I have a few
questions.

Some cleanup require manual review by the community like the split
buildings, we are proposing they use their previous import account
(username_labuildings) using a micro tasking interface like
maproulette or to-fix.

Others can be scripted like mistagged condos this requires some
scripting knowledge and we want specific users to do this.

Do we need a separate mechanical edit account or their own import
account is enough to do this?

Ideas welcome.

Christoph,

Thank you for the observation.

Specific to "roads now intersect buildings indicating that mapping is
inaccurate - like here:"
They are mostly unreviewed TIGER import, I also saw one instance where
we have building but no roads.
This was already discussed by the import team and will be fixed during
the cleanup/validation stage.

Keep your comments and suggestions coming! Will ticket each one and
fix whatever we can.
Thanks!

Hi everyone,

Another round of updates on LABuildings import.
Last week we've imported ~1.1M buildings in LA City. Over 100
usernames participated.
We are close to finishing Phase 1 (LA City) and will continue data QA
and cleanup if needed.

We've posted OSM diaries on the process:
- On tools we built: https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/manings/diary/38969
- On the data: https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/manings/diary/39081

As always comments, from the community is appreciated.

To: osm

Hi all,

I'm delighted to report that the planning for State of the Map 2016 is
going well. We have now opened the call for session proposals
(presentations). You have until Saturday 21st May to submit your idea.

Please see:
https://blog.openstreetmap.org/2016/04/19/propose-your-session-to-state-of-the-map-2016/

We have also opened the scholarship programme. This has the same
deadline so don't hesitate. The option is there if you need it so
don’t let the cost of travel stand in your way!
https://blog.openstreetmap.org/2016/04/25/we-want-you-at-state-of-the-map-apply-for-a-scholarship/

Hope to see many of you in Brussels! :-)

Best regards,
Ben

p.s. There are still sponsorship opportunities should your business
want to support OSM via this route. If interested drop us a note.

[Talk-us] Updates:LA County building import (Los Angeles, California, USA)

2016-05-05 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi,

Over the past month, since we started the LA building import [0],
~330K buildings were added by 74 different users [1]. We ran several
mapathon events [2] in LA to kickstart the import with local mappers.

As this has been going on we've been validating the work, and fixing
any data quality issues we've encountered. If you have specific concerns,
please post in the repo [3].

The OSM Operations group has asked that we pause on all large mapping
import activities for the next two weeks as they prepare for the
upcoming
server move. Since we are adding thousands of nodes for each changeset,
this is slowing down the backup process.

We will update the list once we get the green light again. [4]

[OSM-talk] well mapped area for area navigation

2016-04-25 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi,

I'm looking for an area to test navigation in light with the new OSRM
v5 release [0]. Can anyone recommend an area which you think is
"navigation complete" in OSM?

Of course, "navigation complete means" different for different people,
here I define navigation for car. So I'm looking for an area that has
"complete" map for:

- roads and names
- oneways
- traffic signals
- turn restrictions (including conditional turn restrictions)
- turn lanes (including bike lanes)
- speed limits
- exit signs and destinations for motorways

Advance thanks!

[OSM-talk] Redaction or revertion?

2016-03-23 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi,

Just want to be clear whenever I report something that I think is harmful edit.
When should I propose revertion or redaction?

I'm aware that redaction is only for DWG dedicated accounts. What's
the best practice/criteria for redaction?

Thanks!

2016-03-14 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi,

Some updates on this case. The OSM-PH community and others have
reverted many of the changes made by this user (details is tracked in
this ticket [0] ). For older edits we cannot do a full revert since
many were probably touched by other users already, so we are doing
manual reviews. In addition to the listed user accounts, we noticed a
new user account of similar behavior [1]. We added them in the list
and we have reverted most this user's edits already.

We feel this person won't stop unless we revert edits right away.

I found this user editing lots of duplicated nodes:

Agree with Eugene. There are other who mapped riceland as meadows and
should be fixed as well: https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/489780

[Talk-us] RFC: LA County building import

2016-02-12 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi,

[posted in talk-us and imports-us lists.]

We are proposing a building import of the public domain building and
assessor data for LA County [0].
This covers ~3M buildings for the whole county (2008 - 2014). Two
datasets from LA county will be imported.
The building data for geometry and the assessors data for building use
(i.e. residential, commercial, etc.).
There is also an address data but we are punting this for now due to
various data conflation issues.

Before we go ahead with the process, we are requesting the community
for review and approval:

* Scripts and conversion available in github [1] based on NYC imports process.
* Workflow for a community managed manual import [2].
* Sample data for evaluation, available in a custom Tasking Manager
[3]. Please evaluate the data and test the
workflow.

Do not import any data into the main OSM DB. If you want to test the
full import process use the OSM dev server.
For any issues, please post in the Github [4].

Thanks!

In behalf of the team,

Re: [talk-ph] Coastlines - was Forest landcover

2016-02-04 Per discussione maning sambale
Hi David,

I saw a similar ifsar/insar import over Baybay City, which I removed
since it overlapped with existing coastline and riverbank polygons
traced in Bing. I'm curious who did this but I did not followed up
with the concerned mapper. From what I remembered, PH gov acquired
ifsar data over Leyte after Typhoon Haiyan. I'm quite sure that the PH
gov did not give any permission to import them to OSM or its
derivatives. In addition, ifsar vectors were derived from hires raster
(~20m), so the staircase will be in a similar length.

Might be good to probe more. Can you give me sample changesets so I
can ask around.

OK, started working on this. To be sure, inspect each polygon and
check if it depends on valid data.
