[Talk-us] Local groups, monthly meetings
We had a great meeting last night in Waterloo. Five attended including one newcomer. We enjoyed delicious refreshments at our host venue and adequate wifi connectivity. I really enjoy these meetings with a combination of regular mapping pals and enthusiastic newcomers. It feels good to be able to coach a newcomer through that one thing they don't know how to do with the editor. That's something that feels like it makes a difference by building a better mapper in addition to building a better map. Having the regular mapping pals means a chance to catch up on our mutual or varied interests. Sometimes we even talk about OSM. ;-) So. When is your local group meeting next? Which of you is going to get a local group going in Southern California, or re-animate one in Northern California? Why isn't there a regular group meeting in Portland? Or somewhere in Texas? These monthly meetings are easy to organize, fun to participate in, and helpful for your local OSM community and the wider OSM community. What is stopping YOU from starting your group? You can also find nearby existing groups on the map! http://usergroups.openstreetmap.de/?zoom=4lat=38.54817lon=-92.02148layers=B0T ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

I agree about the idea of the handoff agenda, but with or without, I will also be in the meeting tomorrow. We should at least go in with some goals on what we plan to accomplish this year, and discuss if those goals are practical and how we can work together to help each other with our goals, and how our goals fit with the goals of the greater OSM US. Re: [Talk-us] US local chapter board election results
Hand off agenda is a great idea. My computing habits mean that IRC is probably unrealistic for me. As far as goals for this year, I know that Ian has been building a server intended for hosting tile renders. I'd like to see that continue with a US-specific tile layer ready for public consumption six months from now. Another idea I'd love discuss are extracts designed to assess the quality of OSM data on a county by county basis. I think this can be done in an automated fashion borrowing some of the ideas introduced by Geofabrik's Inspector, ultimately resulting in a regularly-produced summary of data quality for each of the 3000+ counties in the US. Anyway, 'til tomorrow. -mike. On Oct 12, 2011, at 1:47 PM, Jim McAndrew wrote: I agree about the idea of the handoff agenda, but with or without, I will also be in the meeting tomorrow. Hah, hooray for all newly and re-elected members, including myself. I'm eager to get started as well. Thanks to Ian, Richard, and Jonathan for overseeing and managing the elections! A meeting tomorrow sounds like a great way to kick start. It would be great if a few outgoing board members could join to ensure a smooth transition. Agenda, let's see: a round of introductions (I for one don't know most of you), goals and ambitions, see which of those we share and how we can work together to achieve them. Practical stuff like finances/bookkeeping. Who's going to be president, secretary, treasurer (do we need to have these roles?). Set best time and frequency for future meetings. I like collaborative editors to jot down minutes on the fly, we could use PiratePad which does not require an account unlike Google Docs. Example -- http://piratepad.net/d4mimIgxOx As for IRC, I will try to be on there more but it doesn't come naturally to me. Looking forward to this! Also #osm-us is a low traffic irc channel that might work for you. #osm-us is on irc.oftc.net, and available from the browser at http://irc.openstreetmap.org/ The outgoing board still owes the community an annual meeting and when we pulled together the dates for the election we thought the meeting could be online (maybe a fancy Google+ hangout? a conference call? IRC?) sometime next week. The agenda Thea suggested was: Topics at AGM: (preliminary) - Overall Report: Kate - Treasurer Report: Thea - will include swag and non hardware assets description - Membership Report: Richard and Steven - Hardware Report: Ian - New board member introductions - Other business dictated in bylaws I'm not saying we shouldn't meet tomorrow, but we might want to give more time for the rest of the members to get a chance to participate. -Ian ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

I bet we could track down Mike, too. ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
