some light reading
The current issue of Fretboard Journal has a great article on David Grier complete with a few Monroe stories I never heard. Our fearless leader is also mentioned. Hey I'd love to see an article on the Tater in Fretboard Journal which is as fine a music magazine as I've ever seen. No TAB in the Fretboard Journal (we all got enough of that anyway) just some great reading and quality photography. Another fine publication; The Oxford American has their music issue out right now...comes with a (2) CD compilation of obscure but always great Southern music. Got turned onto some of my favorite bands through past music issues. And no Tater I ain't bored just busy with that pesky nonsense called work! Not complaining though glad to have it. Haven't had a chance to visit Statman yet neither. That new Taterbug Special with the 3 designation is DARK! My be my favorite TB Special yet! I've been lurking on this group quite a while enjoying the viewpoints and wisdom. Thanks, by the way, Tater, for sharing the account of the impact of your first child's birth. Reminds me how much I missed your writing when your site went offline for so long back when. Anyhow, I figure it's time I man up and start contributing. This transcription talk calls to mind that recently I got a xeroxed book of Japanese transcriptions of Kenny Baker Plays Bill Monroe. It came from Barry Mitterhoff, here in New York, who I think(?) got it in Japan touring with Tex Logan. Seems to be pretty accurate. Luckily or not it's instrumental, because I hear they did some pretty funny stuff translating Monroe's lyrics... Anyhow, I scanned and cleaned it up, redrawing the staff lines for legibility, and made a PDF, which I've posted in Files. Merry Christmas! Cold Winter's Night
It's been snowing a lot up here in Minnesota and I just got a recording of an original mandolin tune I wrote so I figured I post it up here and see what you guys all thought. I'd love some comments on how to make it fit the style we're all studying. I tried to use downstrokes and tremolo for the melody. Don't know if Monroe had any tunes in Bm so I didn't have much to pull from. Re: Cold Winter's Night
Nice tune Mikey... I wouldn't worry about trying to make your tunes fit the Monroe style... just keep studying, listening and writing and it'll all take care of itself. Man, what a day. I've Toroed 3 times today and it's supposed to drop to 3 degrees tonight. I see your show down in MadTown got canceled last night. 'Twas a good thing. Give a shout when you hit town and stay warm! Re: Cold Winter's Night
Mike, I like your tune a lot and your band plays it well. Nice groove. The downstrokes work too. Re: Check out this guys technique
Nice! Having seen Hedges many times over the span of his career; I think that this was a technique (one of many) he used to make expressive music; And end to a mean if you willto quote Hedges himself You may impress a guitar player with that , but your not going to win your girlfriend's heart with that (laughing). Nilent Sight
I found this version of Silent Night that I recorded last year around this time. Anyone learn any Christmas tunes this year? If we have to listen to it, we might as well play it, right? Actually I really like Christmas tunes cause everyone knows them. Taterbug Mando Christmas music LP anyone? I learned this from a Frank Wakefield article in Inside Bluegrass Magazine. Anybody have any of those? Mike http://www.av1611.org/othpubls/santa.html; Hoff -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Taterbugmando group. Re: Nilent Sight
Forgot the link to the song. That link in my nickname was something I found looking for the nickname for that Evil Santa helper demon that is a folk hero in Europe. I came across this page made by a group of people who claim that Santa is evil! I couldn't resist sharing.
