Andy called last night about 11p New Yawk time and said that he had it
on an old tape, that he heard it on a radio show years back. I forget
one of the host's names, but it seems he said that Bill Vernon was the
other deejay. Andy said that the show was very good and played very
tasty stuff. I was pretty tired by the time I heard from him and my
cell connection was breaking up a bit at inopportune moments, so I
didn't retain it all. Apparently our beloved Mr. Statman is
deeep closet in his resourcing. Hat's off...

This video is great and I've been using it a frequent reference whilst working
on this tune. Andy Statman is pretty amazing. Sometimes his vocalization are a
little unsettling, but I'm generally uneasy so I can accommodate it.

Re: Andy Statman strikes again...

2009-03-31 Thread Mike Romkey

I'm trying to figure out the bebop break he does 1:05 into the tune.
Anybody have a clue what in the world is going on? I'm having trouble
wrapping my brain around it. At first I thought its main
characteristic was a rhythm change -- going from a walking 4-beat
tempo to almost a syncopated polka 2-beat feel. Or does it have
something to do with modal playing, a la John Coltrane? I've heard him
do this sort of thing on other YouTube vids. It's not the way Monroe
would have done it but I like it. Anybody have any ideas?

So that humming sound is Andy doing some kind of vocalization while he
plays? You can hear it on some of the tunes on East Flatbush Blues.
It's driven me crazy trying to figure out what that sound was!

Vocalizing? I thought that was somebody grinding coffee for espresso.
So nobody's got an idea about Andy's solo? Don't make me figure this
out myself. It's a Tater challenge and I needs some help.

Re: Andy Statman strikes again...

2009-03-31 Thread Mando Chef

If any of you have ever seen Andy in person he does hum and I'm not
sure he really knows what he is doing, in the heat of it. He
obviously knows what he is doing but it seems to come out so randomly
in most of his playing.

Rough outline. check!
Spontanious picking.. double check!

I watched him a sam grisman jam last year... Looked like Sam was
going to shit himself when Andy said let's jam. He ofcourse held his
own but there were no gimmees.

So trying to figure Mr. Statmen, I'll leave to ya'll and I'll return
to enjoying listening to it...

Jeff,
Nah, I didn't figure out Andy's solo. I wrote down a few variations
off the original fiddle version. That's where I'm living. It's on the
files section if you care.

If so, I would to get in on that action.

Here's a link to a tune that I've been passing around lately. I first
heard Ralph Blizzard tear through this about 15 years ago and I
thought then that if Monroe had heard this he'd have played it. The
tune comes from Fiddlin' Arthur Smith, not to be confused with Arthur
Guitar Boogie Smith, the writer of Dueling Banjos. Our good
samaritan Val Mindel sent me a copy of Mr. Smith's track and I was
tickled pink to get it. Finally, I can learn this little gem. So, I
wrote out a few lines of it and sent it around. Ironically, there is a
Monroe tune by the same name, but an entirely different tune in a
different key with a different feel and having no resemblance to
Smith's tune. I sent out a track of Jimmy Campbell playing a twin
fiddle version of Monroe's tune accompanied by tab for Smith's tune.
 Duh...

The ingenius and confused recipient who shall remain unnamed
(...writes vampire books...) sent me an email saying that he couldn't
make 'hide nor hair' out of it until he found this video by the
illustrious Andy Statman. Now all is better, he says. Here's the
 link...

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2Mv8lsG-fA

I must say, my brain is spattered all over the room. Where in the
world would Andy pick this tune up? In the depths of my ignorance I do
not understand. To me, this tune is not even well-known in current
oldtime circles, save possibly by the more mature participants. Even
then, it would seem to me that a person would have to be interested in
Arthur Smith and digging into his tunes to even find this one. Am I
just so far out of touch that I don't get it?

I am going to have to call Andy and find out for myself.
