Hi. I'm new to this group and may I say what a joy to find so many
others sharing my passion with this music.
My earliest memory of listening to a song over and over was an old 78
record of "Your Feets Too Big", maybe pre-Fats Waller.
Getting ready for an 8 hour drive tomorrow and I gathered these from
my stash to take along.
2- Blake and Rice, Big Twang-Ben Winship, Rock in My Shoe-Tim O'Brien,
We'll die in the Pig Pen fighting- Tom, Brad, and Alice, Old Time
Greats- Riley Puckett, Piece of Time- Jimmy Campbell, Good Old
Boys-John Hartford, Appalachian- Baldassari and Schnaufer, Ring the
Bell- Gibson Bros, Songs My Dad Loved- Skaggs, Not for Kids Only -
Garcia and Grisman, Retrograss - Grisman, Hartford, and Seeger,
Forever and a Day - Kruger Bros, couple of Jim Watsons, and my new
favorite - Memories of John.

I couldn't fit it into a Christmas song without being too melancholy
or too silly. So I switched gears completely and wrote one called
"Neon Lights of Love."
It's both melancholy and silly.

Re: Song of the Month-December 2010

2010-12-04 Thread kathy nichols
The procrastination monster can be a big factor but being busy with
other life stuff can be too. Guess it depends on how much everyone is
looking to develop their repertoires.
I personally like to have 3 or 4 tunes I am working on at a time.
Perfecting a tune takes me alot longer than getting it into finger
muscle memory. It feels like a big accomplishment when I can play it
without using the tab. Depending on the tune, that can take several
weeks or longer.

Let's see, 2 new tunes per month would make 24 new tunes per year.
That sounds reasonable. Those who only want one per month can pick
the one they want to work on.

2010-12-06 Thread kathy nichols
Thank you for bring this up. I wondered if I was the only one
confused by the difference between the mp3, the youtube, and the tab.

I went to a jam this weekend and asked an old time fiddler there if he
knew Hatcher's version of Grub Springs. He promptly played the
straight version of the tune found on most of the other youtube
videos.
He has played around Michigan for many years, just never heard the
crooked version but thought the one he played was Hatcher's version.

I find working on one measure at a time is helping some. Still
confused about which fingers to use on the slides, especially in the
7th measure.

Interesting spelling for the blogger's first name
Daevid.kinda crooked.

Re: country blues

2010-12-17 Thread kathy nichols
Very good points Gathel. I have already learned alot about myself
watching my video attempts. Like do I really hold my pick like that?!!
Kinda like listening to your own voice. We do tend to be our own
worst critics.
I also find this group very supportive of everyone's attempts and hope
to have my version of "Bug Water" up soon, double slops and all.

Funny how Val and I came up with the same phrase!

Re: New Tune/January '11

2010-12-27 Thread kathy nichols
Lack of posting probably has to do more with holiday travel and time
rather than lack of interest.
As a newer member of the group, I really appreciate all the
conversations and comments and even though my version of the December
tune may never make the land-o-tube, it has been fun working on it.
It has a permanent place in my stack of everyday run throughs.
Does the tune need to stay in any certain genres? How about something
like Black and White Rag (George Botsford). It's in D and has three
parts.

2011-01-14 Thread kathy nichols
Hi Brian,

All I had to do is step 1 and I was able to open up Mississippi
Palisades and Grub Springs pdfs, the mp3 of Mississippi Pal, and a
picture of Mr. Monroe.
Seems to work for me.

Re: Re: Norman Blake

2011-01-21 Thread kathy nichols
Hi Nelson,
I am one of the tbuggers that recommended the Blake/Rice 2 CD. If you
are enjoying Norman's mandolin playing, there is a Homespun tape (and
probably a DVD now) with a number tunes played and demonstrated by
Norman and his wife Nancy. One of the tunes they dissect is Father's
Hall, which is #4 on the 2 CD. At one point, Norman displays, talks
about, and plays some of his different mandolins. It's fun hearing
his take on the music and watching him play up close.
