Hello Neal,

On Saturday, August 23, 2003 at 7:01 PM, Neal heard voices say:

This another example of the nerd mentality at RitLabs

Um, what is the nerd mentality?
 - If you're talking about the registration policy, I won't discuss
   that.
 - If you found my reply rude or curt, then I apologize, but this
subject has been beaten to a pulp and then some.
 - If you think I work for RITLabs, please be advised that except for
a couple of people on this list, nobody can speak officially for
   RITLabs.

I love TheBat!, but suffer with the inability to have all messages
stored in the same directory if I so wish.

Why not? Use a simple outgoing filter to filter your mail to the
Inbox and you'll have exactly what you want. That's what I do for any
mail that doesn't have an obvious home in my folder structure.

I seem to remember a promise from Ritlabs that 2.xx would support this
 feature.

I don't understand what feature is supposedly missing, but we are only
on version 2.0 beta 3, so they could have a number of releases before
the v2.xx promise is broken.

So now I am stuck with an unregistered copy if I go past 2.0 Beta 1
 without any explanation?

The best post I've seen to date (granted, I haven't read them all)
is:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg29632.html

And based on the content of that message, I'm not replying again to
this thread. If you want to discuss your concern about that missing
feature, please start a new thread.

At this time Thebat! is not a user friendly program.

I disagree, but then this topic has been rehashed a million times on
TBUDL, so again I won't comment on this point. I have not
participated on TBUDL for quite some time, so I can't say when this
discussion has last been heard, but I'm sure a generous soul could
help us locate a thread or two in the archive.

 ? Why can't I just clear the trash ??

From the Beta 3 release notes:

,-- [ http://www.ritlabs.com/download/the_bat/beta/tb200b03.txt ]
| [-] The Empty Trash folder on Exit was ignored
`--

Or is there some other problem? Again, answer this question in a new

Don't get me wrong, my question about trouting was just a friendly

Just yesterday I found that lots of people on Usenet seem to have lost
any sense of what to snip and what to quote; you can actually get
messages of over a hundred lines with only three letters at the top
(ACK). One guy actually asked for some RFC or web site detailing
what to quote and what not. My answer to that: Think about what you
want and what you need.

If you've for once snipped too much you can always revisit the topic
and quote more upon request.

PS: To complicate matters slightly, when you think about what to cut,
don't change the original meaning (in your favour, mostly). A

from 2.0 Beta/3 is possible to use Shift+Del for deleting immediatelly

Mail management, button Advanced and for each folder too in
Deletion tab.

look to Sorting office, section Selective download filters.

 3) Here is a long standing 'bug' in The Bat. The first two drop-down file
types in the 'Save As' attachment on my machine are:

   AutoCAD Emergency Backup Drawing (*.$$$)
   AutoCAD Temporary File (*.$A)

This means that my saved attachments get extensions of .$$$ if I forgot or
don't select the *.* file selector. Could this be fixed so that *.* always
come first in the selector list?

I have *.* as first here.

Hm. I think you have underquoted, and you have given the reason why it
is inconvenient for pay-per-minute dial-up users. g

I had to go back up thread to check what this was about - and TB still
doesn't provide a go to previous message in thread shortcut, so I
had to scroll up. ;-)

I do agree with you that it is sometimes difficult to decide what
needs to be quoted and what doesn't, and that OTOH there are cases
that are clear-cut.

Neither does TB provide a go to root of thread shortcut, but that
has nothing to do with this, I just wanted to mention it again...

Delete behaviour is still inconsistent

2003-08-24 Thread Jonathan Angliss
Hi,

I mentioned in beta 1 (and I think 2) that the delete function was
inconsistent between IMAP and POP accounts. While Stefan produced
the feature that adapts for that, it's still inconsistent.

  In a POP3 account:
Delete a message marked as new, it moves to the trash as read

  In an IMAP account:
Delete a message marked as new, it moves it to the trash as unread.

This is just something minor, but gets a little annoying when TB
keeps telling you that you have mail, when it is in fact the deleted
  items.

how do you use the integrated spam plugin. I don't have a plugin to add,
 where do you get it

there's no *integrated* spam plugin. tb offers an interface for plugin
developers to write their own plugins and integrate them into tb.
possible plugins are antivirus, spam and macros (as far as i know of).

currently there are only a few plugins available and since the plugin
feature was introduced on the beta release of tb, all plugins are as
well beta. one often noted antispam plugin you can find below. for
discussions on that i would suggest to also join the TBDEV mailing list,
since new version are usually posted there.

This developer's build you can find here:
   http://klirik.narod.ru/arc/bayesit04d_pickup_folders.zip (66.8kb)

after you dl'ed the file you install it by extracting the files in a
folder you like and read the readme.txt which is supplied if i remind it
correctly. if you have any questions installing the plugin feel free to
ask either list or write me a mail.

is popfile a plugin??? I already use popfile

i didn't heard of popfile, yet. but i assume it's an extrnal tool
running and thus not directly integrated into tb - no plugin.
nevertheless plugins work as extrnal tools do, but in advantage to
external tools have to possibility of accessing internal tb data like
the addressbook and stuff like that.

on the other hand, you might not have a need for running plugins since
you can handle most, daily needed stuff, by external tools like spampal
and norton antivirus as well. choosing plugin or external is more a
personal preference than a real advantage of one above the other, at
least in the moment.

how about this: add never treat mail as spam if the sender is in
whitelist option in pref/spam plugin dialog. then, if this setting is
on, thebat doesn't call plugin to process this msg at all.

i would prefer the setting to be enabled or disabled in the config area
of the plugin. for one there's no need to change tb then. for another
it's more a plugin specific setting. possibly there a spam filtering
plugins working with DNSBLs only and therefore need no whitelists -
but still whitelists could be implemented ;). nevertheless it's a choice
of the plugin developer what possibilities he likes to make available to
the users and should not be enforced by tb imo.

Delete large messages from server doesn't work correctly in 2.0beta 3?

It's customer feedback from the Hungarian users list, I don't use this
function so someone please comment on it.

Peti Lajos wrote (translated):

The new Delete large messages from server function doesn't work
correctly. If it's unchecked, but Delete received messages from
server is checked, then it doesn't delete the large message from the
server at first, but an alert message appears in the inbox with the
header of the large message. However, the second time I check my mail,
it deletes the large message, though delete large messages... is
unchecked. WHY? It should leave it on the server! It'd be very good if
an important message couldn't be lost this way, if the user forgets to
retrieve it instantly. It'd be a great bonus for dialup users.

In older versions, if you specified a max. message size, then TB
wouldn't retrieve mail greater than that size, but if delete received
messages from server was checked (as is, you wouldn't leave ALL your
mail on the server), then TB deleted it immediately, and your
potentionally important message was gone. I think this new function
has come to avoid this situation. It is better, but not quite perfect!

IMAP and the Merak Mail Server

2003-08-24 Thread Mark Anderson
Hi

Now that The Bat! is providing IMAP support I keen to move my domestic
mail server to IMAP. Having looked for a low-cost IMAP server Merak
seems like a good option. However it seems determined to use SSL for
the connection and requires seems to require a certificate. I am way
out of my depth with SSL and certificates and wondered if anyone has
the combination set-up and could give me some pointers on how to
either get The Bat! to trust Merak or get Merak to accept connections
without using SSL.

If it's any help Outlook Express will connect to the IMAP server but
displays a warning about the certificate not being issued by a trusted
source.
