is a known issue and is being worked on already.

Selective Download filters here are a bit of a problem as well: Most
of my SD-filters should load filterstrings from files (eg
kill-header.txt, kill-subject.txt ...) and should then kill the mail
if it contains any of the filter strings. Well, they just don't. I
haven't tried to type some 1000 filterstrings right into the NFS, and
I hope the next version will fix that problem.

I'm using WinXP SP2.

Filters in V3

2004-09-04 Thread M i c C u l l e n
G'day tbbeta,

After installing v3, my filters are a bit of a mess.

Some work, some don't - a real pain. (None of them are very complex, so it's
weird.)

And most of them should be common filters rather than tied to either account,
so they need to be moved.

And thanks to this list, I've discovered the sub-filters.

As my filters are buggered, what's the easiest way to kill them all and start
from scratch? Is there a file I can delete? (Gets rid of any trace of the dud
ones that way...)

creating filters in mail ticker doesn't work right

2004-09-04 Thread Paul Cartwright
I just blew away all my old filters and started fresh. I did that to
get RID of LOTS of old filters in the wrong accounts.
What I just found out was that when I read mail using the MT ( mail
ticker), and use the Specials-create filter menu, it creates the
filters in the wrong accounts. I thought I had noticed this behavior
before, but could never get a handle on it. That's why I have so many
filters in so many accounts that do nothing!

OK, I have just entered my comment:

Stef, what about dialog question for example Do You want to use
previous pane positions? (No will change positions to default)?

Even a dialog question is too much of a hassle. It would be great to
be able to switch split view modes on-the-fly. Should anyone wish to
restore the pane positions to default values, that improbable option
should be made available from a sub-menu somewhere or in the general
Preferences dialog. But as it is right now, the switching of Split
Modes is simply impossible because they always return to the same
undesirable default positions. You just have to stick with the one
split mode you prefer.

In my case, it's a buggy Split Mode: whole-width message-list, where
toggling the preview window off leaves you staring at blank space
across most of your screen, instead of at a more extensive message
list. (The only reason why you would want to toggle the preview window
off in the first place!)

This is the reason why we need workable Split-Modes, i.e. the ability
to switch between various Split Modes effortlessly, on-the-fly. I and
others requested this possibility on the mailing lists back in 2000 or
2001 when there wasn't even a Bug-Tracker yet. If Ritlabs incorporated
this small fix, that alone would make it worth upgrading to Version3
for me! Thanks.

Since there can be a lot of copy actions, for which order is

I think you may be wrong here. If you consider _only_ the copy actions
(i.e. I want to copy a message to folders A, B and C), what different
does it make in which order they are copied?
No one - and so it should be copied in the order. Because:

The order _does_make_ a difference if there are some other actions
(like flagging a message, for example) in between a copy and the
 next.
Thats why 9Val wrote there can be a lot of copy action, for which
order is important.

only the message in B should appear as flagged, not in A. Will you
 agree to that?
Of course.

This is why I would say that *only_one_move_action* should be allowed in
 a filter.
Why this limitation? It might be ther exist a reason to have several
move actions.

I could expand a bit considering if perhaps other actions should also be
greyed out on the list when the move one is, but I will not do so now.
Delete message and delete message from server maybe - but again: Why
this limitation?

That is, the move should _delete_ the message from the source folder
(i.e. make it unavailable for further actions on the message)
Yes, it should be delete from source folder but NOT make it
unavailable for further actions. This would be a senseless limitation!
As you self wrote:

There are actions that can be perfectly be executed after the move
is done, like for example playing a sound or sending some kind of
 auto-reply, etc.

What if the user adds an impossible action after the move one and
 leaves it there?
There is no impossible action, because all actions are allowed
because the message could be tracked without any problem!

No problem. You are a great beta-tester, so why not reply?

I think I have covered most of what I would reply to your comments in my
(lengthy?) replies to 9Val. Let me know if not.
Sorry, but you don't.

To 9Val you explained why you think that
- there should be only one move filter
- there should some actions don't work after a move filter
- some other things which I agree :-)

You see, I don't agree with your first two points - but I explained
that on direct reply. But you didn't comment this one:

 Park Message
 Move message to folder A
 Flag Message

Problem: How to filter a parked message?
 1. Move it and leave it parked
 2. Move it and unpark it
 3. Don't move it
 4. Copy it and leave it parked
 5. Copy it and unpark it

TheBat! accutally seems to do the 4. possibility - but I think it
would be good if user could define how it should work
 (mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] wish 06)

Nevertheless: TheBat! Copy it and leave it parked so we would expect:

Park the message, and then _copy_ it to folder a and at last flag it.
Expected result: The message is parked in inbox, and a parked and
flagged copy is in folder a.

Real result: The message is parked and flagged in the folder a.

Bug: TheBat! doesn't execute in the order here.

Re: NFS: Big question for 9Val

2004-09-04 Thread 9Val
Hello MAU,

Sure, that other actions are important too, but most effective
filtering is filtering to other folders.

M Of course they are important. These actions may mean delivering the
M original message but with some modifications made to it prior to
M delivering. But I disagree with you this time on choosing the word
M effective.

My point was that there are a lot of actions (setting priority,
setting color group, changing read status) which make 'visual'
filtration in one folder, but it is not so effective like separation
of messages

M I will understand it that you want to insist on the fact
M that the main purpose in filtering is to deliver messages to folders.

I started from that :)

M If NFS isn't supposed to work this way, what is the need for ordering
M actions and what's the use of the Up and Down buttons?

Since there can be a lot of copy actions, for which order is
 important.

M I think you may be wrong here. If you consider _only_ the copy actions

No, I'm clever enough to understand that just copy actions don't make
the weather :)

M Copy to A
M Flag message
M Copy to B

M only the message in B should appear as flagged, not in A. Will you agree
M to that?

Sure

M This is why I would say that *only_one_move_action* should be allowed in
M a filter.

It is closer to truth :) and sounds like suggestion, well, will be
done

Why? Moving doesn't makes duplicates and message could be tracked
 without any problem.

M I have actually replied to that I think. There should only be one move
M action. If the user wants more c_o_p_i_e_s, he should use the copy
M action.

I talked about any other action like parking message. I don't
understand why do you think that after moving it has no sence in other
operation while message is still accessible?

M Would this mean that the user should be spied on and not allowed to
M add any actions after the move? No, not all. There are actions that can
M be perfectly be executed after the move is done, like for example
M playing a sound or sending some kind of auto-reply, etc. Also, the user
M may want to add an action (which can only be added at the end, BTW) that
M he has forgot and then move it up to where it should be.

Why? If there is no copies order shouldn't play a big role and
adding actions can be more intuitive - no add+adjust position, just
add

M What if the user adds an impossible action after the move one and
M leaves it there?

Example of such 'impossible' action?

Re: NFS: Big question for 9Val

2004-09-04 Thread 9Val
Hello Boris,

The way TB! handles park message now is quite simple:
 1. if message was parked before filter execution, it wouldn't be moved
 2. if filter has parked message it continue execution like it wasn't
parked and as result you'll get parked message in destination folder
BA Indeed, so is it, and I think this is a bug. Because nobody expect
BA that there is a difference between message is parked before filter
BA execution and message is parked from filter execution.

 Reasons:
 1. it is more compatible with old filtering system
BA Hm? Why?

The answer to both questions is quite simple. Remember old filters. If
you had a filter with destination folder and with 'mark parked'
checked you never had care about when TB! will actually park the
message. It is more natural way - order shouldn't be critical if there
is no copy (or other actions which need exact message state). User
shouldn't think about the order and he wouldn't do it in simple filter
with one move and some any-flag-modify actions

As you can see, there is no newline after the headers.

As you can also see, the POP3 server is functioning properly, and sending
the proper responses to all POP3 commands, and is not disconnecting. The
error message from Outlook Express claiming that the server disconnected is
a blatant lie.

I am not POP3
guru and I am not sure if newline character is required after the
 headers,

It is, however it is not the POP3 server's problem that a message is
corrupted. A POP3 server's function is limited to producing the contents of
a given message, upon request. The server does not parse the message in any
way.

I tried to retrieve messages using Thunderbird on FC2, it worked just
fine. I am sure most of you will blame TheBat or OUtlook Express, but
the fact is: these are most popular Windows clients. I would like to
have my mail server working good with them.

The fact that something may be a popular bit of software does not obligate
everyone else to bend themselves over, working around that software's sloppy
programming.

Yeah. It took some doing to get back to the previous version. A repair

I eventually opened the .msi file in WinRAR, saw the excecutable
listed and attempted copying it across. This aborted with an error. I
tried starting TB! and got an error about the executable not being a
valid Win32 file. I then repeated the .msi installation and finally
I'm back to v3.0.

So it would seem that if you wish to roll back to the .msi install
version, then delete or rename the 3.0.0.6 executable and then do a
repair install of the .msi release.

Filter weirdness (Solved this bit at least)

2004-09-04 Thread M i c C u l l e n
G'day all,

Having what I think are weird problems with the NFS using sub-filters. Not
saying it's The Bat, it could be me.

[delete a couple of hours work]

OK, I've figured it out. I setup the sub-filters as below.

The Filter structure - in Common filters - is:

Incoming messages
   Other
 The Bat
 TBBETA - Juice
 TBUDL - Juice
 TBBETA
 TBUDL

Design aim:
Move MY posts to the TBBETA folder, mark read, park
Move MY posts to the TBUDL folder, mark read, park
Move TBBETA posts to the TBBETA folder
Move TBUDL posts to the TBBETA folder

What I did was:
Create TBBETA - Juice filter
Copy TBBETA - Juice filter, change parameters to be TBUDL - Juice filter
Create TBBETA filter
Copy TBBETA filter, change parameters to be TBUDL filter

It wouldn't work. The TBBETA filters did, but not the TBUDL filters.

How I got it to work? Deleted the TBUDL filters, and created then from scratch. No
problems.

sigh

Hopefully this will help someone else.

PMFJI. In MAU's example:

M Copy to A
M Flag message
M Copy to B

You agree that:

M only the message in B should appear as flagged, not in A. Will you agree
M to that?

9 Sure

It makes a lot of sense to people who program their filters as well
as to not-so-computer-savvy people who just use filters. The actions
are being worked on from top to bottom. So, if I do something to the
message before doing something else (i.e. flagging and then copying)
the message will be copied with that attribute. That's all normal. The
flag will not be applied to the copy in folder A, as the message was
only flagged after the copy command. The filtering system should not
go back upwards and apply the flag to all copies.

Otherwise I would have no possibility to have the message flagged in
one folder and unflagged in another, which may be what I desire. Or
coloured or what.

Now talking about moving. Of course it should *not* be possible to
apply colour groups or flags after moving, it doesn't make sense. I
think it should be greyed out to prevent users from mistakenly setting
this action and wondering why it doesn't work. Both the the savvy and
the unsavvy user will understand that you need to flag etc before you
move, and that action are being interpreted top-to-bottom, very much
like the filters, and that is easy to understand.

Just my € 0.02 worth.

Not a good start.

Also, I've noticed this in the last beta from the 2.13 series, and all
versions of 3 so far, but it doesn't seem to like one of my IMAP
folders. It ALWAYS freezes when it gets to it, TB is helpless sitting
there until I kill it. All other mail clients are fine with that
folder, and I regularly have to delete just that item from the fetch
list so it can continue... It happens to be my TBOT list folder. I've
not yet checked out why it does it, but I remember in some of the
earlier 2.x betas this problem occurred, and was fixed... Not sure if
this is the same issue or not, but behaviour is the same.

soon be straightened out and you can then go there and obtain the
PCWSmileys Zip file and copy its contents into The Bat!/Images.

Meanwhile, one batcoffee is attached herewith. :)

I would never just make up an emoticon handle that had no image to
call! Against my religion. :)

Incorrect sending via RAS (dialup) connection.

2004-09-04 Thread Alexey N. Vinogradov
Hello, tbbeta.

I found that it is hard to send a letter when the type of connection is dialup
on demand (when The Bat! dials itself and then send/receive the mail). Before
it was waining for established connection and then make sending/receiving. Now
only receiving threads really wait, the sending doesn't wait for the
connections, just tries to send a letter immediately (when the dialing is still
in progress) - and so, it gives the error unable to connect to server, which
is surely true, because no connections exists for the moment of this try.

The problem arose, I think, when I switch a flag use local delivery on, and
switch it back to off after some time.
