OK, new encountered utf-8 related issues.

1) Switching between Plain Text MicroEd to Plain Text Windows looses all
text in case when charset of message being edited is utf-8. All other
charsets seems to work.
Bug report: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4906

2) When default editor is MicroEd and reply is made to utf-8 message no
quotes are inserted, just an empty window appears. I think that this
behaviour is caused by the same bug which causes utf-8 text to dissapear
when switching between MicroEd and windows style plain text editor.
Bug report: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4907

Not fixed issues:

Mail ticker are displayed as question marks ?
Bug report: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4708

5) Character display in header view has problems. Cyrillic letters are not
displayed when message encoding is utf-8, koi8-r, iso-8859-5. However when
message encoding is windows-1251, all cyrillic characters are displayed
correctly.
Bug report: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4909

6) When message is composed in utf-8, then it is saved and then reopened for

Guess it is related to https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4904

7) MicroEd does not allow to enter characters outside default windows locale
even when I set charset to utf-8. Foir example I can't input cyrillic
characters in MicroEd when charset is set to utf-8. However I can enter
cyrillic letters when I set to koi8-r, iso-8859-5 or windows-1251.
I think it is because MicroEd does not have unicode support. Anyeay, Windows
style editing sucks would it be possible to add unicode support to MicroEd?

8) Russian letters turn into ? when I move between header fields during
message composition.
Bug report: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4910

Fixed issues

9) Plain text windows editor does not allow to enter cyrillic letters at
all. Doesn't matter what character is set.

A hunch. I look at TB's runaway tasks. It seems that TB has no idea
what tasks

are already running and starts the same thing again. Sometimes tens of times.
Then I look at Eudora's task manager (mulberry doesn't have one, so I
can't compare).

None of that duplication happens. Eudora makes one simple pass through its
tasks and doesn't trip over itself or get clogged. It is true that
Eudora lacks some
things that Mulberry has, but it does have a Bayesian filter that
works very well

with IMAP.

Anyway, it seems to me that the folks at RIT are not thinking well
about the best

way to interact with an IMAP server. Optimization, planning what is needed
and when is the best time to do it once only. I hate to shake my
head and walk

away, but I might join you in time.

Hello Matt,

Not always, but enough times, VFs are not refreshed even though they are

Confirmed. It is not constant, but every so often I'll need to do a
manual refresh on a few of my virtual folders. Other times, it works as
 expected.

No, it doesn't always happen but I have seen it again just now. A VF
that just looks for messages of a certain colour group in just one
folder. I have assigned a couple of messages to that colour group and
the VF did not display them until I did a manual refresh.

Hello Edvinas, and Maxim, 9Val, Stefan, and all Beta Testers and
  Development Team!

OK, new encountered utf-8 related issues.

I am replying to this message using copy-and-paste, because the bug in
issue 2) bit me when I clicked the Reply button. :)

Supplying quote indicators ( ) manually.

Confirmed. I have also added a supporting note to this report in BT.

Quoting below by copy-and-paste, also. Too inconvenient to supply
quotes indicator line-by-line, however, so I'm setting the quote off
with a horizontal separator:

4) Mail ticker is able to display only characters from default windows
locale. For example my locale is windows-1257 and all cyrillic letters in
Mail ticker are displayed as question marks ?
Bug report: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4708

5) Character display in header view has problems. Cyrillic letters are not
displayed when message encoding is utf-8, koi8-r, iso-8859-5. However when
message encoding is windows-1251, all cyrillic characters are displayed
correctly.
Bug report: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4909

6) When message is composed in utf-8, then it is saved and then reopened for
editing, all my 8 bit characters are gone. Problem happens during opening of
saved message, because saved message contains all characters.
Guess it is related to https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4904

7) MicroEd does not allow to enter characters outside default windows locale
even when I set charset to utf-. Foir example I can't input cyrillic
characters in MicroEd when charset is set to utf-8. However I can enter
cyrillic letters when I set to koi8-r, iso-8859-5 or windows-1251.
I think it is because MicroEd does not have unicode support. Anyeay, Windows
style editing sucks would it be possible to add unicode support to MicroEd?

8) Russian letters turn into ? when I move between header fields during
message composition.
Bug report: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4910

Fixed issues

9) Plain text windows editor does not allow to enter cyrillic letters at
all. Doesn't matter what character is set.

End CP

I did not test the Cyrillic or the Russian characters issues but have
no doubt whatsoever that these deficiencies exist.

Issue no. 6) I confirm. It is happening with this reply.

Further Issue:

MicroEd failed to use my Reply template when I clicked the Reply
button. I have had to type in my greeting and signature manually.

Since I am a database application programmer, I have been sympathetic
to the challenges faced by RL in totally remaking the UI while
attempting to retain compatibility. However, I am now convinced they
have one, or more, serious flaws in their methodology, program object
structure and/or methods of testing programming changes. One of the
things I have learned is that it is quite often much better to start
from scratch that to keep putting Band-Aids on the wounds of old code.

When the functionality of an object gets broken by revisions to
another object there is something fundamentally wrong with the
programming model being implemented. The guys at RL seem to be beating
their heads against the wall for little or no rewards. Maybe it is
time to look critically at what is happening and establish a new model
for programming the new The Bat! As my signature shows, I have found
no version later that 3.0.2.10 to be stable enough for the work I do
on a daily basis. Most of this version 3 stuff reminds me of using
POCO. I simply cannot afford it. I have all my customers using 2.12
until something better that the performance and stability of 3.0.2.10
becomes available. Customers with very simple needs or those
challenged by using computers generally are using FoxMail 5 simply
because it is possible to teach them to be successful without making
the training a lifelong process.

I still feel for the guys at RL. Hopefully, they can examine their
current methodology to find why it isn't achieving the desired results
and have the courage to make the necessary changes.

I completely sympathize with your point of view.

If all I wanted was a reliable e-mail client, I would still be using
3.0.2.10 myself. (I like the 3.xx series almost solely because of its
simpler filter-creation process; regular expressions stymied me in the
1.xx and 2.xx series.)

I don't have to use TB! in a business environment or to make a living
with. So I have the luxury of enjoying the puzzle-solving aspect of
beta testing.

Further, I have learned. in the short time I've been a member of the
Bat community, how to protect myself with back-ups. TB! is the most
enjoyable and useable and safe e-mail client that I've ever had on my
machine. (Never used POCO or Incredimail-- lol .) Began (because of my
knowledgeable daughter-in-law) with Eudora Pro 4.0, ran OE for a short
time before moving to The Bat!, tried Pegasus for a few days when my
very first download of TB! was a corrupted one and I didn't have the
skills to understand what to do about it.

Then I settled down with v. 1.61 and have never looked back.

I am totally committed to The Bat! and I do keep my faith in its
developers. But then, I am a woman in love. ;)

Hello Everyone!

For about 10 minutes Connection Centre would not appear when I clicked

However, in the interim I composed a post to the list describing the

Repeated the sending and received the same error report 4 times.

Re[2]: Search hangs

2005-07-15 Thread Steven P Valliere

Nope. 3.51.3 didn't change the search behavior for me.
But I did notice that the 'stop' button works until the
progress bar gets to the hung (at 50%) point.

It seems that TheBat! is getting confused by one of the
messages. Maybe there's a strange encoding that is
causing TB to get stuck?

Problem with character sets and Quick Templates

2005-07-15 Thread Costas Papadopoulos
Hello,

I use a Quick Template with the %ABTOHANDLE parameter in the subject
field of certain emails that I send in Greek.

The %ABTOHANDLE information is intended to be picked up from an
Addressbook containing information in Greek.

My Regional settings in Windows is set to English.

The messages sent with this arrangement do not show the Greek name as
per the Addressbook entry. They show random English characters
including ?.

If I change the Regional settings to Greek, then the Addressbook entry
is correctly shown in the Subject field.

This only happens in the Subject field, and not in the message body.

Is there a solution to this issue, other than having to change the
Regional settings every time that I want to send this kind of message?

Regarding bugs:

It seems that this is fixed.

Incidentally I observed something strange: Recently all UTF-8 encoded
messages are displayed in preview pane as rich text view. I searched suchg
messages to check if the bug is corrected and all found messages were
displayed as plain text view, but with double characters instead UTF-8 ones.
Manual change of encoding to UTF-8 in search panel gives good result:
message is displayed in PTV with correct characters.

I have it up and running and have been doing a bit of testing to see
whether the problem described in
http://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4904

might possibly have acquired a serendipitous fix in the fixing of
4906 and 4907.

Unfortunately, not. In moving from an Edit Mail Message window Reply,
which had been set up in the folder where the original message was,
to the Outbox, the word hillside became hillsd.

This happened while still in PTV, in the Edit Mail Message window.

I'm going to start keeping a log of the exact charsets involved and
the exact letters which are dropped, when this happens.

Maybe I can overcome my perception of its randomness and find a
pattern.

Here is a short list of changes:

This one seems fixed at least in part. I no longer get that error when
drafts are being saved to the server side Outbox. Sending didn't cause
any errors either and the outbox eventually settled down on not having
any messages in it after sending my message.

I'll see how things go while using a server side Outbox over a prolonged

This posting violated the list rules regarding top posting.

Top posting, i.e., typing all your reply text at the top of your
message and following it with all quoted text below, is not
encouraged and we actually request that you not do so on this list
because

a) It makes it difficult to glean context from what you typed at the
   top of the message

and

b) It encourages excessive quoting.

We would much prefer if you quote just that much of the message to
which you're replying, so we know what it is you're referring to,
and then below the quotation, type your response. If you're
responding to more than one part of the original, then quote each
part separately and follow each part with your response.

Now, I know that you may not personally prefer this format and that
you may disagree with some of the reasoning here. We very much
respect this. However, this is the format that most of the active
members here prefer and all members are expected, and are being
asked to use the format that will make most of the active membership
here comfortable reading. You'll likely get a more responsive group
when you post using a style that is comfortable for them to read and
understand.

To find out why these MOD messages are posted to the list instead of
private mail, please read the welcome message you received when you
subscribed.

Thank you.

I'll see how things go while using a server side Outbox over a prolonged

The message I'm now replying to was sent, but a copy remained in the
Outbox with no copy being placed in the Sent folder.

Apparently, there was failure of the moving of the copy to the Sent
folder. I eventually had to move it manually.

PH Good evening Roelof,

RO When I click on the download link for 3.51.4 I get a '404 - HTTP not found'

PH It seems they have removed it ... . I've got it at 21:59 GMT+2,

PH available anymore...

Hmmm I just downloaded it now at 00:02 GMT (16 July 2005). Maybe I
haven't read far enough to see if it has been fixed. Peter's message
was like 2 hours ago. So maybe it is fixed now.
