Re: The Bat! 3.51.3 is now available
Clive, I have an idea that these unicode/localization issues will take over for a few months at least. I do hope you're wrong Gleason, because I'm running out of patience with TB. Given that Mulberry is working so well with IMAP day-to-day I'm seriously considering not reinstalling TB when I restore my installation next month. A hunch. I look at TB's runaway tasks. It seems that TB has no idea what tasks are already running and starts the same thing again. Sometimes tens of times. Then I look at Eudora's task manager (mulberry doesn't have one, so I can't compare). None of that duplication happens. Eudora makes one simple pass through its tasks and doesn't trip over itself or get clogged. It is true that Eudora lacks some things that Mulberry has, but it does have a Bayesian filter that works very well with IMAP. Anyway, it seems to me that the folks at RIT are not thinking well about the best way to interact with an IMAP server. Optimization, planning what is needed and when is the best time to do it once only. I hate to shake my head and walk away, but I might join you in time. -- Gleason Using The Bat! v3.51.3 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 2 Primarily using the Fastmail IMAP server which uses Cyrus. Since I am a database application programmer, I have been sympathetic to the challenges faced by RL in totally remaking the UI while attempting to retain compatibility. However, I am now convinced they have one, or more, serious flaws in their methodology, program object structure and/or methods of testing programming changes. One of the things I have learned is that it is quite often much better to start from scratch that to keep putting Band-Aids on the wounds of old code. When the functionality of an object gets broken by revisions to another object there is something fundamentally wrong with the programming model being implemented. The guys at RL seem to be beating their heads against the wall for little or no rewards. Maybe it is time to look critically at what is happening and establish a new model for programming the new The Bat! As my signature shows, I have found no version later that 3.0.2.10 to be stable enough for the work I do on a daily basis. Most of this version 3 stuff reminds me of using POCO. I simply cannot afford it. I have all my customers using 2.12 until something better that the performance and stability of 3.0.2.10 becomes available. Customers with very simple needs or those challenged by using computers generally are using FoxMail 5 simply because it is possible to teach them to be successful without making the training a lifelong process. I still feel for the guys at RL. I completely sympathize with your point of view. If all I wanted was a reliable e-mail client, I would still be using 3.0.2.10 myself. Further, I have learned. in the short time I've been a member of the Bat community, how to protect myself with back-ups. TB! is the most enjoyable and useable and safe e-mail client that I've ever had on my machine. (Never used POCO or Incredimail-- lol .) Began (because of my knowledgeable daughter-in-law) with Eudora Pro 4.0, ran OE for a short time before moving to The Bat!, tried Pegasus for a few days when my very first download of TB! was a corrupted one and I didn't have the skills to understand what to do about it. Then I settled down with v. 1.61 and have never looked back. I am totally committed to The Bat! and I do keep my faith in its developers. Unfortunately, not. In moving from an Edit Mail Message window Reply, which had been set up in the folder where the original message was, to the Outbox, the word hillside became hillsd. This happened while still in PTV, in the Edit Mail Message window. I'm going to start keeping a log of the exact charsets involved and the exact letters which are dropped, when this happens. Maybe I can overcome my perception of its randomness and find a pattern. Here is a short list of changes: ...
