you can have a FINAL version installed, and install a beta in a different
folder, if you want to make sure you can run a good copy.. check the
archives, this was discussed a while back, something about starting the bat
from a shortcut with /REG=beta or something like that..
that way, if the beta doesn't work right, you can always revert to your known
good copy ;)

Unfortunately I have to confirm, although I find it more annoying than
stopping (me from using TB). As long as it is only a handful of us
experiencing this bug RL will have a hard time getting to it.

obviously it isn't a priority :)

BTW, once in between (during the MSI testing over the last few days)
one version lost my MT setting for which messages should be shown. I
did have Normal, Low and High Priority set to show, had to re-enable
High and Low one or two weeks back (the infamous lost messages
non-bug) and lost the setting again.

I didn't do any MSI installs until the latest release, 3.01.33

I don' remember which two versions exactly lost those but we should
have an eye on that setting in the future - there seems to be an
 intermittent bug.

I'm not sure I had those set, I'll check, next time I run it.

You don't happen to have a filter that has Autocreation selected do

necessary. From another post you may not have had to turn this on

pretty quickly, and over 10,000 is so slow that I have recreated my

DA I can't confirm this. I've got a folder here with 13513 messages (at
DA the moment :), and it opens almost instantly. In any case, about as
DA fast as any other folder...

I just stopped and restarted TB. It took 32 seconds from the time I saw
the splash screen, until all my folders were populated with numbers.
This was only 4 new messages, and the only large account I have has 9,000
messages, about 12,000 total. No bayesit plugin.

no, you RIGHT-CLICK that entry, then there is a context menu that has
ADD_ADDRESS with menu of items to select from.. It wasn't real obvious

One thing that still bothers me, and it is very annoying, is the message
ticker, jumping complete threads, accounts, going who knows where after

Re: batting the bat

2004-05-16 Thread Paul Cartwright
Hello Patrick,

PE as i announced some time ago, i wrote a bit about my quest for finding a
PE new email client. here it is: http://techtech.blogspot.com/

I liked it, here is the entire article, just so people don't have to go
FIND it:), and I agree, I think IMAP support should have been a bigger
priority than some of the NEW features, like virtual folders ( but
that's just my opinion;0)

batting the bat or how i switched email clients..

there are different types of email clients. on the pc side of the world
you can maybe differentiate between outlook-like types (easy and
unflexible) and netscape mail-like types (the classical 3 panel setup -
folders, messages, message preview - multiple accounts, filters and so
on..).

i've always been in the latter camp with using, certainly, netscape,
pmmail/2 and for the last years the bat.

the bat has always been the closest to pmmail, that's why it has been
chosen at the time (some 4 years ago) and it was fast as hell even with
giant message bases at that time of some 10.000 messages.

but - this was then and now is now. the world of email changed
radically, first with the heavy increase of spam, than of virii and
worms and later with the demand for increased mobility and the need for
synchronisation or online access to you mailbox by IMAP. today, message
bases of power users count in the gigabytes and 100.000 messages.

using an email client seems to be a bit like driving a car of a certain
brand. when you need a new car you take the successor of your old one.
so, when a new version of my mail client is released, i certainly use
that.

with the bat it was the same, i shelled out the 45 EUR for the business
version, i use it partly for that purpose and appreciate the work on a
program of that complexity.

but then, things went ugly. the IMAP support in the bat's 1.x branch was
crude but usable, it basically provided the same functionality like you
had with POP3. the 2.0 release of the bat, expected and announced for
years, promised high and mighty full IMAPrev1 support - but what an
exaggeration!

from the developers point of view this statement may even have been
right - client and server could exchange commands and data according to
IMAPrev1 - but the client side was so lousy! basic UI considerations
like instant feedback was not provided. filtering mechanisms - the proud
of the POP3 side of the bat just didn't work.

but not enough, after waiting some months until the arrival of a
maintenance version which, after some testing provided at least an again
usable IMAP support i bought my license in the hope, that ritlabs (the
developers of the bat) are working on fullfilling their promises. a week
later they suddenly removed the full IMAP-support advertising. great.
i bought a new version with a lot of new mostly questionable usefull
features minus one usefull. thanks.

it was time to look thoroughly for an alternative.

finding an email client with full IMAP support turned out to be hopeless
- if i didn't want to change to, cough, outlook. yes, outlook is the
only email client on the market which uses the strong points of IMAP to
an extent, that you could call innovative. it hurts a bit to say such
things abut the big evil from redmond, but hey, honour where honour
belongs to.. IMAP offers multiple connections to servers, server side
folders and searching, server side implemented instant notification
about new messages without the need to check every x minutes (not all
servers support all features, but their enough out there who do). but
these features are supported only by outlook and to some extent from
mulberry (which has a lot of drawbacks in other areas, IMHO)

ok, i forgot about my IMAP dreams and concentrated on the client's
capabilities when it comes to managing my mail. i have multiple
accounts, i have a lot of contacts, receive some 100 mails a day and
never throw away anything - i keep even spam for some time - you never
know what's gonna happen to your penis ;)

after installing and uninstalling some ten or fifteen different demo
versions of email clients i sat back and tried to tackle the problem
differently - by thinking about it.

my first question was what is email? email is an exchange of
information - and more and more a tool for archiving it. you can at best
compare it with the letters and documents you find in your (real life)
mailbox. and suddenly i realized something strange: in the last years i
had developed two completely different approaches of handling email on
the one side and dead tree documents on the other.

in RL i try to spend as few time as possible on organizing my working
life. i get the bills, enter them into the tax program, put them in a
file and that's it. quarterly i do my turnover tax statement and put the
file with the bills into a box. all letters which require an action go
into a todo file - everything else gets into a different file and get
into a big box at the end of the years - which goes into the basement
later.

then another. I had to **kill* TB, rename all the config files and
restart TB. I can see this beta will be short lived...

oh, the error said invalid parameter.

PGP Kludges

2003-11-03 Thread Paul Cartwright
I'm not sure what happened, but I was reading an email, and I wanted to
read the kludges, so I hit CTRL-SHFT-K and...nothing happened. I was in
the browse window, so I switched to the main Bat window, selected the
message in the folder, tried it again, and nothing. I had to go to the
View-RFC-822 headers and check it. this was a PGP encrypted message if
that makes any difference.

KC I changed the S/MIME options to use Microsoft CryptoAPI and this is

my little icon says Invalid certificate. I just got my thawte
certificate last week ( and updated/renewd my other email certs that

and when I tried to sign it, I got :

Re: Filters on IMAP with TB 2.0

2003-09-02 Thread Paul Cartwright
K as far as I've seen, automatic filtering does not work with TB
K 2.0 on IMAP accounts. Is it gonna be changed in the near future ?

I noticed that problem myself, but thought it was just me. I have had
some very weird problems with IMAP only, but I really don't use the
IMAP account I have for much of anything. I subscribed to the tbbeta
list with that account, just to test it.
I have seen my browse ticker window totally redraw itself while I
was reading a message, all of the BOLD ( unread) messages
disappear, go away, then come back. the filters don't work, and I
had to go to my web interface for my IMAP account to create a
folder before I could create a filter, TB said it couldn't create
  a folder, permission denied.

Re: Possible to run 1.62r and 2.0 on the same machine?

2003-09-02 Thread Paul Cartwright

JB I wonder if it's possible to run thebat 1.62r and 2.0 on the same
JB machine? I dont mean to run them at the same time but if something
JB would go wrong with 2.0 is it then possible just to replace the .exe
JB file with 1.62r .exe file? Or does the new version screw with the
JB different settings so it is not possible to go back?
I am running 1.63 beta 5 and TB V2 on the same box ( XP home). each
logon user can use a different version, and they can both be run from
the same user account, as long as you use RUNAS.
  user A installs 1.63
user B installs TBV2 ( different folder of course)
user A right-clicks the TBv2.exe and selects RUNSAS and runs it as
  userB.
  works for me:)

it hasn't gotten any better with the final V2 version, the memory usage
still creaps up.. every time you check mail.

MC No problems here. It seems to jump up a random amount when I check my
MC mail (sometimes as much as 1-2MB), but always settles back down to
MC around 16.4MB on my system using WinXP Pro SP1/The Bat! 2.0 Final.

MC Note, if I keep mashing the check mail button rapidly, it will
MC continue to go up, but when I finally lay off it settles back out.

well, without doing any mASHING, I just checked and my mem usage is
almost at the max usage, 26K, vs 28K peak.

PC much better, but still a few problems with IMAP and memory..

PM Too bad I can't test the IMAP part as none of my providers supports
PM it...

easily you could:) do like I did and get a free IMAP fastmail.fm

a guest account gives you:
 10 MB storage space
40 MB bw/month
IMAP/Web access
45 day no activity period
Taglines on emails
Ads in the web-interface
   (no pop-ups)
signup here:
https://www.fastmail.fm/mail/[EMAIL PROTECTED];Ust=23a49c58!;UBd=fastmail;[EMAIL

PM As for memory: I only have 64 MB physical RAM, but I don't observe any
PM problems. Maybe it's because I'm using RAM-idle from tweaknow.com ...?

I have 256 megs, and I don't use any memory programs, but for you, win98
needs all the help it can getG

PC I can live with the icons, I don't get all wild about buttons, they just
PC serve a purpose:)

PM Some time ago I composed my own glyphs.bmp by taking the icons I liked
PM from several glyphs files. Perhaps I'm a bit conservative here, but I
PM like what I'm used to, so I'll stick to my more colorful icons. :o)

hey, whatever works for you!!

actually, thebat.exe is now available in the beta folder... although

DF It seems that you haven't installed it by running the_bat.exe. It's
DF not only the exe but a complete installation archive. You're still
DF using RC1 but my ABOUT reads Version 2.0 like my automatically
DF generated footer line.

you are so right! I had downloaded but not installed it.. the tip-off

not 5,000KB..
all installed NOW ! ( see sig ;)
