Common Replied Filter no longer works with v.4.0.7

2008-02-08 Thread Perry Nelson
Hello Fellow Beta Testers,

I have defined a common read filter, called Reply Needed, that allows
me to set the color group and assign the message so marked to a virtual
folder where it awaits a reply.

Here is that filter. This one works in 4.0.7.

 TB! Message Filter
beginFilter
UID: [26B18A20.01C62A80.70864B1F.4A5BF79F]
Name: Set\20color\20to\20Reply\20Needed
Filter: {\0D\0A\20`21\0D\0A}
SetColour 1302808744
MarkUnread
IsManual
IsActive
IsHotkey
IsHotkeyOnly
Ignore
endFilter

Then I also have a common replied filter that changes the color group
back to the generic color group (i.e., none) when I get around to
replying to those messages in that virtual folder.

Here is that replied filter. This is the filter that no longer works in
4.0.7.

 TB! Message Filter
beginFilter
UID: [6F7F8100.01C7EA28.33BC22EB.780A1C99]
Name: Remove\20need\20reply\20coloring
Filter: {\0D\0A\20`15`0`1302808744\0D\0A}
SetColour 213158228
IsActive
Ignore
endFilter

Any suggestions as to why this replied filter no longer works? It used to.

Delayed send after new version installed

2007-02-26 Thread Perry Nelson
Hello Fellow Beta Testers,

Several of you have commented on something similar to this previously, I
think.

What I've noticed is that when I install a new version and attempt to
send a note to the group to announce that it is installed and working,
there are three or four failed attempts before the message goes out.
Here is what the log shows for my most recent attempt to communicate
such a message to the list:

!2/26/2007, 12:13:45: SEND - Message has not been sent. Server reply -
[TEMPFAIL] destination not valid within DNS
!2/26/2007, 12:14:37: SEND - Message has not been sent. Server reply -
[TEMPFAIL] destination not valid within DNS
!2/26/2007, 12:15:10: SEND - Message has not been sent. Server reply -
[TEMPFAIL] destination not valid within DNS
2/26/2007, 12:25:24: SEND - message to tbbeta@thebat.dutaint.com sent (836
bytes)

This has happened so frequently that I've accepted it as par for the
course, but it is annoying and doesn't seem like it should happen.

Can any of you tell from this whether I have something set improperly?
Thanks.

Thanks for the speculation, Simon, but other than XP's firewall, which

apparently that's not the answer. I am behind a router, however.

I think I can confirm at least a part of this. I have never changed
the default configuration of Autobackup in Preferences. Here it is set
for every 2 days at 09:00. However, there is no event in Scheduler for
it, nor has there ever been.

Interestingly, TB has made no automatic backups either when I check
  this path ...

  C:\Documents and Settings\Perry Nelson\Application Data\TheBat!

So at least here, as counterintuitive as is seems, having AutoBackup
checked in Preferences does NOT seem to result in backups being made
  automatically.

Not with TBBETA, but I experienced the same thing with TBUDL earlier.
I also notice that both you and I are Comcast.net subscribers in

Hi Raymund,

RT So I don't think that will be fixed as it is a bit hard to do without
RT tweaking the complete installation.

Thanks for your reply, Raymund. As people such as you have contributed
their thoughts, my understanding of the issue I was facing has been
refined (mostly corrected, actually). And, by the way, I was operating
with administrative rights when I was making the changes, of course.

As it turned out, my problems were actually not so much with the
un-install/re-install process as with the residual, corrupt message
base files and how the new installation failed because of them.

The text of the message in this dialog ...

  http://img520.imageshack.us/my.php?image=uninstalldialogth5.png

... implies that message base would be removed during the un-install.
That is apparently not correct if the installation is an OTFE install
or if the user chose to install the message base in some
  non-standard location.

As a result of the several comments people have made to this thread,
I've come to think the actual problem is how TB! handles the situation
where a file in the message base is corrupt. As Peter, I think it was,
said, it would be preferable if TB! gave a message to the effect,
I've encountered a problem using the existing message base. Would you
like to start the program without that message base? Yes/No/Cancel.
That way, one could get into the program and restore from a backup.

An even more elegant solution, as a secondary trouble shooting step,
might be to allow accessing the message base one account at a time and
then one folder at a time until you encountered the problem account
or folder, but that might be a bit much to ask.

Un-install wizard doesn't completely remove files

2006-08-09 Thread Perry Nelson
Hello Group,

Over the last couple of days, I've needed help in getting version
3.80.06 reinstalled on my computer. You may have seen the discussion
  on TBUDL, starting with
  mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] from
  Tue, 8 Aug 2006 07:36:49 -0400.

Apparently some file was corrupted when the computer went down while
TB! was accessing the server to get mail. I was running version
3.80.06 in OTFE mode at the time. I first tried to un-install TB! and
restore from backup, but upon starting TB! after the re-install, I
kept getting cascading AVs, just after the splash screen was loaded.

Eventually Alexander, Marck, Mary and Stuart got me back up and
running by pointing out that I should check to see if everything had,
in fact, been removed during the un-install procedure. Sure enough, it
had not. Manually deleting the relevant folders in both C:\Program
  Files and C:\Documents and Settings\Perry Nelson\Application Data
appeared to be the key to getting the re-install to go smoothly.

I was surprised that TB!'s installation wizard did not remove those
files, as I had instructed it to. Since I had to do this process more
than once, I took screen shots the last time through of what appear to
me to be the important screens.

The first is a shot of the un-install dialog where I instructed the
  wizard to remove the files.

  http://img520.imageshack.us/my.php?image=uninstalldialogth5.png

The second graphic shows what was left in C:\Program Files ...

  http://img223.imageshack.us/my.php?image=progfilesleftim0.png

... and the third illustrates what was left in the C:\Documents and
  Settings\Perry Nelson\Application Data area.

  http://img520.imageshack.us/my.php?image=appdataafteruninstalldk3.png

I would have expected that if I instructed the wizard to remove all
files, none would be left. In my case, where some of the residual files
were apparently corrupted, re-installing was not possible until I
manually removed them by removing those folders.

Is this behavior of failing to remove these files as it was intended
to be? Or is it a bug that needs to be resolved?

While this issue isn't technically about the current Beta, it does
appear to be one that should be resolved, if it is a bug, before the
  next release.

Re: Un-install wizard doesn't completely remove files

2006-08-09 Thread Perry Nelson
Hi Peter,

Wednesday, August 9, 2006, 8:19:58 PM, you wrote:

PO The working directory, I would say, is the directory where TB was
PO installed originally.

In my case, and I suppose almost everyone else's, that would be
C:\Program Files\The Bat!. And since I accepted the default
locations, the mail directory was determined by the installation file,
  without intervention from me.

PO An uninstaller usually only removes stuff (files/directories) it
PO created during setup. snip...

PO I would not expect the 'old' TB executable to be removed.

I wouldn't expect that either. I had renamed the old executable when I
added the Beta executable. So we are in agreement about that. I
expected it to still be there after the un-install.

PO Dunno about the speller directory, did you add it later?

No, I did not. It was a part of the standard installation, so far as I
can tell. Do you suppose it remained because I may have added a word
or two to the User Dictionary?

PO Did you check if the uninstaller removed all registry entries?

No, I'm sorry to say, I did not.

PO I wouldn't want any uninstaller to remove data files.

  Fair enough.

My dilemma with re-installing the program seemed to stem from the
corrupt file or files in the message base, however. Once that folder
was removed, with whatever contamination it apparently contained, the
re-install proceeded normally. Actually it is more accurate to say
that the re-install occurred without incident even before I removed
that folder; it was starting the program that presented the problem,
apparently when the program bumped into those corrupt data files.

For the record, this exchange has helped to clarify some things for me
  though.

PO Did you get any question during uninstall to remove the message
PO base?

According to the bottom line of this graphic, ...

  http://img520.imageshack.us/my.php?image=uninstalldialogth5.png

... The Working Directory contains all accounts, *message bases* and
account books. Unchecking this box will delete all files from the
Working Directory (C:\Program Files\The Bat! -- from our agreement
above) and all its subdirectories. As you note below, my message
bases were stored, not in the Working Directory but under C:\Documents
and Settings\username\Application Data\The Bat! Pwd instead.

PO I'm still wondering why your mail directory has the suffix 'Pwd'. Is
PO this supposed to be standard? (Yup, I don't use a default setup, Mail-
PO and Home directories live on a W2K server.)

Well, I did accepted the default setup. I always do, unless I have an
overriding reason not to. That may be why your Mail Directory is
different than mine and why Pwd appears in the C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Application Data location in my setup and not in
yours. Are you also running OTFE?

PO I support your wish for a separate decription tool, not only for
PO backed up files, but for all encrypted files, as they reside on disk.

Once I learned that one could restore an encrypted backup to a
non-encrypted installation (and demonstrated that for myself this
afternoon), I am less concerned about the need for such a tool though
  I wouldn't fight its development.

PO My experience with Voyager forced OFTE: I had it installed on USB,
PO with some message bases. Then, after copying msg bases to hard disk,
PO reformatted it and reinstalled Voyager. After moving the msg bases
PO back to the USB, they were not accessible. Apparently some hardware
PO setting (volume name / serial number) is involved in the encryption
PO key.

  Interesting.

PO IMHO, this should not be the case. I wonder what the opinion of RIT
PO is on this case.

I'll be interested in reading their response to that question too.

PO Anyways, nice to see you're up and running again.

Thanks. My setup is now Plain rather than OTFE, and I'll keep it that
  way for now.

Ironically, I didn't need OTFE anyway, as I am the only one using this
computer, but I mistakenly thought I had to install it that way to use
Voyager, which, as it turns out, I've downloaded but never yet
  installed to a USB stick.
