V1.49

2001-01-30 Thread net5zero

Since I upgraded to 1.49 (from 1.44), I find that the functioning of
TheBat is much slower. Clicking on Account Filter or the New
Message icon takes much longer than it use to in 1.44.

Is that the case with everyone? Or it is just my system?

Thanks in advance

JM

No problems here. Check the following:

- any database files set to readonly (restored from a backup?)
- do you regularly compress your folders?
- do you regularly defrag your harddisk?

On german keyboards it's ctrl-shift-alt-# - maybe this helps.

Another option *might* be to do it in the registry for a quick fix.

Better make sure TB! is closed and make sure you backup your TB!
folder and registry keys. I'd back up the whole
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT tree first. You never know what'll
happen.

I'm not positive that this is the registry key for this particular
function, but look under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!

In the right pane, scroll down to "Simple Menus" and modify that value
to 0 if it's set to 1.

corrupt. A compressed TB folder as only a TB folder with the deleted

There have been a two other reports of people losing all their data

TB! v1.49 - vanishing email addys

2001-01-30 Thread Jan Rifkinson

Hello TBUDListers.

Like most of you I have a default "My AB". All adds go to this AB.
However, I also have a number of groups. I noticed today (actually
yesterday) that the email addresses in all my groups remain intact
while the email addresses for those names remaining in "My AB" no
  longer exist.

  A. I wonder if anyone has experienced this , if so, how you repaired
  the situation.

  B. I have a backup AB but it duplicates many of the entries in the
groups. As I understand it, this duplication could confuse QTs so,
aside from the obvious manual sorting deleting manually, does anyone
have a suggestion for cleaning up my mess?

  Thank you.

imap server folders, everything is downloaded from the root folder, if
it is marked as read it is not downloaded from the server. If the

This wasn't the design of imap, however, and so it didn't forfil my

are in the import process, TB! provides a mapping dialogue so you
can match incoming info with the TB! AB.

Take a special look under the "Address Book Field" see if eMail is

changed to "yes" manually, it will import all the other info but
*not* the email addresses. That could explain your dilemma.

Though not user interfaces. Try using it for any length of time, you
will find it isn't as easy as the bat, with complex dialog boxes
appearing all over the place. Also, I hate those small windows
(kinda like pmail) that pop up all over the place.

I think that tb could involve imap support, but with eather online and
offline mode. In offline mode, its just glorified pop3, but where
message storage etc is an issue, you could use it in online mode,
whereby messages can be manipulated throughout tb folders.

One issue you could come up against though is where you have
imap engines on the server processing rules to put certain
messages into certain folders, it would be nice to specify different
folders to look up in the bat.

I will be posting a full list of problems we found with tb shortly.

I greatly agree with your point about TB "that we all know and love". I found
myself in it, thanks.

Actually, I use to ask myself sometimes why RIT doesn't make some variants of
TB, i.e. TB Lite (limited filter functions, no regexes and only POP3/SMTP), TB
"Profy" (for advanced users who need IMAP or some sort alike, more
business-comfortable) etc. Perhaps, RIT will make them, but I frankly hope they
will NOT!

Maybe all of this sound stupid, but here on these lists we got topics like this

need "that"... ugh.

The bat review

2001-01-30 Thread Andrew Hodgson

Hi All.

This was given to me by Jim Hill, he created it some time back
when testing out the bat with another mailserver.

I see quite a few of these as cosmetic, but some of them do cause
problems.

-beginning of review-
Starting with the simple things:

The installation program is truly awful, complete with cryptic
error dialogs (Error 03!) which don't seem to have any lasting
effect if you press on through them.

It's my practice to change the name of distribution exe files
when testing (because I retain them in the same folder as the
installation) to avoid any clashes with files extracted during
setup but thebat complains that the distribution is corrupt if
its filename is changed.

The sig sep in the reply template is broken (missing trailing
space) but the one in the new message template is ok.

The default quoting scheme is ...

JH This is what Jim Hill said.

which is non standard and breaks the colour quoting of most
clients, including Agent.

If you send a message with attachments to tb it creates a new tab
for each attachment, the first tab being the message body. No
problem there and it's quite a good idea except that the default
action when such a message is selected is to display the contents
of the last tab, ie the attachment, instead of the first tab.
That makes navigation unnecessarily awkward, imo.

The macros (bit of a misnomer that because they're nothing more
than simple placeholders, afaics, eg %FROMNAME inserts the
sender's name into a message) are missing any mention of the
Message-ID field which is a strange omission.

Thebat's text handling, aside from some crazy defaults (are these
guys Russian or Polish or something?), is pretty good, wrapping
properly during editing and allowing long quoted lines to remain
undisturbed. It's unusual to find those attributes in a mail
client these days and it makes thebat very usable. The ui is also
well presented. I had no difficulty finding my way around
initially and it's very easy to change most of the defaults. The
keyboard accelerators aren't quite as comprehensive as those in
Agent and aren't as intuitive, eg Ctrl+Shift+K to display headers
instead of H in Agent and Ctrl+F5 to reply instead of R in Agent,
but at least most screen elements can be navigated without a
mouse which is useful.

The message ticker is a neat idea, creating the impression of a
cut-out window on the desktop, but it's really nothing more than
a cutesy idea with little functionality.

What did surprise me, given the topic of this thread, is how
poorly html messages are presented in thebat's internal viewer.
It may be marginally more convenient to display attachments
formatted inline but their presentation in tools designed for the
job, ie ie5 or nn4.7, is infinitely superior. On the plus side,
the text only view, accessed via Ctrl+tab, makes a very good job
of displaying the html without tags.

More serious matters:

Thebat always creates a Return-Path header which is a
fundamental
misunderstanding of rfc 1123. The Return-Path header should only
be added when *removing* a message from smtp, not when
*inserting* a message into smtp.

Thebat seems to add a number of gratuitous blank lines onto the
end of its messages. This is difficult to check properly because
the editor doesn't constrain the cursor to the text by default,
making it difficult to detect unwanted whitespace.

Thebat uses the dotted quad of its host (when in lan mode) in its
helo argument ...

| EHLO 192.168.55.2

instead of the configured host name required by rfc 1123. The
hosts file on the test machine contains ...

127.0.0.1 laptop.jhc.org.uk localhost
192.168.55.2 laptop.jhc.org.uk

so it could easily have resolved the ip address into a domain
name if it had tried.

| From: Jim Hill [EMAIL PROTECTED]
| Reply-To: Jim Hill [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thebat adds a gratuitous Reply-To header by default. This should
never be done if both From and Reply-To contain the same address.

| X-Priority: 3 (Normal)

There may be a way of getting rid of unwanted headers like this
but I couldn't find it during my brief tests.

| Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thebat uses the domain of the server to which it attaches to
create the rhs of its msg-id. This is considered bad practice
because it increases the risk of msg-id clashes (but less of an
issue in mail than in news to be fair).

| In-reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
| References: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Nice to see proper threading info being included in replies. I
didn't test thebat's threading capabilities but it claims to
thread via References which is useful. Note the capitalisation of
In-Reply-To - untidy but not serious.

| Mime-Version: 1.0
| MIME-Version: 1.0

The usual advice is to capitalise the first part of that header
(as shown on the second line above) because some mime
implementations (incorrectly) fail to register it otherwise.
Probably of increasingly less importance as time goes by.

Mail sending is poorly implemented, imo.

Filter logic

2001-01-30 Thread Tony Owens

Can someone explain the logic used when using multiple 'AN'D and
'OR' filter strings? As far as I can tell, the alternative
filter(s) does not seem to be associated with any particular
'AND' filter.I think Marck Pearlstone touched on this in a
previous post, but I didn't really understand it.

For instance, if I define two AND filters (say, A AND B), and a
single 'OR' (alternative) filter, C, how is the whole filter
interpreted:

(A AND B) OR C?
(A OR C) AND (B OR C)?

  or some other way?

I'm trying to understand how the Bat! deals with attachments.

I use 2 accounts, let's say AccountA and AccountB. Both accounts are
configured to store attachments in a separate directory, i.e.
\AccountA\Attach and \AccountB\Attach.

If I receive mail in AccountA, the attachment gets copied into its
\Attach directory. However, if I use a filter to move the message to
AccountB, the attachment seems to get embedded with the message when
the move is performed. I can then manually delete the attachment from
the \AccountA\Attach directory.

It's not a major inconvenience, but I wonder if there is a way to have
the attachment moved to the destination account's \Attach directory?
That way, I could access the attached files directly from Windows
Explorer, e.g. over my network, instead of having to go through the
Bat!. I realise that I could achieve this by just leaving the
attachment in the initial account, but that way, would I not end up
with 2 copies of each attachment in my message base, one separate file
and one embedded?

Regards,
 Keith

You would do well to get v1.49 checked since most of the issues have

server connection handling.

WRT the statement you made that TB has a multitude of RFC
deficiencies, I don't find that this review supports that statement.

I would like to see what RIT labs would make of the analysis although
until it is brought up to date (1.42 was nearly a year ago!) I doubt
that it will be taken seriously.

Also, it should be noted that *no* client software that I know of
offers "an smtp server for receiving mail as an alternative to pop3"
or "options to send via mx lookup instead of direct to smart host".
This is functionality reserved for MTA, not MUA software. I am
surprised that someone so obviously knowledgeable in the field would
have insinuated otherwise.

AH Ok, I used tb over weekend using imap support, and did not

AH support for imap server folders, everything is downloaded
AH from the root folder, if it is marked as read it is not
AH downloaded from the server. If the delete from server option
AH is checked everything is deleted as per pop3.

Just try to use 'Dispatch on the server' option and you will

somehow slower than pop and didn't seem to be extremely stable

You don't need a regex for this.

Use this macro: %ABofromFIRSTNAME="%OFROMFNAME"

It will look for the address book first name and use it. If there's no
address book entry, then it will fall back on the original 'from'

The address book macros are explained in the help.

EF Thank you much.

You're welcome. :=)

ACM The address book macros are explained in the help.

EF Hmm, ok sorry for not looking there first.

That's not what I meant. I was indicating the documentation so that
you have a look at all the other possibilities the address book macros
offer.

EF I have to admit, the whole logic of that macro you gave me is a
EF little lost on me... so I don't know that the help would have been
EF much help considering that I don't even understand the concept
EF here.

See above explanation.

EF I've been a programmer for 20 years, and in my way of thinking
EF this statement would cause the contents of %ABofromFIRSTNAME to be
EF replaced with the contents of %OFROMFNAME.

Agreed. :=)

Re[2]: The bat review

Hello Marck,

MDP offers "an smtp server for receiving mail as an alternative to pop3"
MDP or "options to send via mx lookup instead of direct to smart host".
MDP This is functionality reserved for MTA, not MUA software. I am
MDP surprised that someone so obviously knowledgeable in the field would
MDP have insinuated otherwise.

Although, I would GREATLY appreciate a MUA that suppported mx lookup.
I use free dialup providers when I'm on the road, and none of them
have a SMTP server, which causes me great difficulty. As far "an
smtp server for receiving mail", I can only assume that he is talking
about a builtin POP3 SERVER, which allows incoming SMTP connections.
I can't imagine how I would want to use that... but... doesn't TB
have something similar with it's "The Bat! dialup server?" It's
acting as a POP3(non standard I presume) server.

BTW, why does my text indent automatically like it does in the above
paragraph? I've noticed it with a couple other emails. Kind of
obnoxious.

Probably allow POP3 on an internal LAN, but don't want people checking
personal mail at work, or bringing in viruses/worms in school or
something like that. The firewall admin probably forgot to block the
IMAP port.

upgrade question

2001-01-30 Thread Pywacket Martini

Hello bat folk!~

I just installed TB1.49 on a new computer
I had previously been using 1.36

I fired up the new bat and it took my registration key
just fine...all my folders showed up, but no mail!

I have a copy of all my mail currently running on 1.36 on the other
machine--will I need to export?? in order to see my mail in 1.49?
And would that be for each and every folder or is there an easier way?

thanks muchly for your help and apologize for just leaping in, but
it's kind of an issue for me right now.

Jyllian
