Problem using reply To when replying. (ping Mark Pearlstone!)

2005-07-27 Thread John Phillips
Hi Bat! Fans,
 (and Mark).

Using 5.1 Pro at work through MDaemon mail server 8.1, which now has some
sort of sender verification which I am trying to get my head around.

Problem is however, that in 90% of cases, using Reply to icon. or
selecting text with F4, an unacceptable To: address is created.

For example in the headers, an actual sender is (as Reply to)

 Tony Standley [EMAIL PROTECTED]

When I reply, Bat!, no doubt after MDaemon has fiddled with the message,
puts the following in the To field:-

 Tony Standley

Of course this address is unacceptable.

MDaemon is actually adding some headers at the bottom of the message
 showing simply: From

I am using the following macro for all replies:

%BCC=%BCC=[EMAIL PROTECTED]%-
%OFromFName,

Is there a macro that will pick up the address in the from the headers
before the MDaemon stripped address?

Strangely, some address still work ok.

Mark, do you know of a work around for this? You da MDaemon man!

(I have written to MDaemon as well for support, but I fear that they may
blame Bat!

All worked fine until MDaemon upgraded to 8.1)

Within minutes you should get a message that somebody using your

request. After your confirmation is processed (another couple of

Using the Message Dispatcher

2005-07-27 Thread David Embrey
Hello TBUDL,

I have just started to get to grip with the Message Dispatcher even
though I have been a Bat user for a couple of years. As I understand
it from the help file, the Message Dispatcher allows you to view the
messages on the server, (e.g. when using a laptop on the road)
without having to download all the messages. You can then
selectively download only the messages that you are interested in.
This would be very helpful since we receive about 100 messages a day
(mainly spam) and hence the server fills up very quickly. So if I
access the server in the normal way, I will have a long download of
largely rubbish into the inbox of my laptop (which does not have all
the filters to get rid of spam that my office system provides).

The problem is that it does not appear to be possible to view the
server messages using the MD without also triggering the download.
The 'Configure Account' settings only seem to provide one option in
Mail management which is to invoke Message Dispatcher automatically
at each mail check. This would also cause all the messages on the
server to be downloaded to the laptop inbox which I am trying to
avoid. Also, there are a number of options within Message Dispatcher
that are not explained in the help file. Is there a more extended
discussion of how to use the feature elsewhere?

You can read an individual message in dispatcher by selecting

Try the Global/toggle flag option. Or, for messages you do not wish
to download, manually uncheck Receive.

As Stuart Cuddy just wrote to you, you can read the messages on the
server by selecting Open. And by unselecting Receive at the same time,
you can leave the message on the server.

You can also permanently unselect the Receive column, requiring you to
manually check the Receive box for messages that you wish to download.
Use the Global/set flag option.

Also, there are a number of options within Message Dispatcher
that are not explained in the help file. Is there a more extended

Sorry, not to my knowledge.

I use the Message Dispatcher to selectively download my messages as my
routine way of managing my mail. I'm my Own Spam Filter, since I
receive very few unwanted messages. The capability to manually select
those I wish to receive and those I wish to delete is one of the joys
of The Bat! for me.

SC You can read an individual message in dispatcher by selecting
SC Message/Open. This does not take the message off the server.

Let me add that the MD downloads all the headers, this this is what
might confuse David. The messages will only be downloaded if they are
ticked receive, which is the default.

I have one account which receives more spam than anything. I open the
MD and hit ctrl-2. This takes the tickmark off of all messages. Then I
look through the headers and tick receive for those that I do want
to download.

If most messages are spam and should be deleted from the server, crtl-3
marks all message to be deleted. If good messages should not be
deleted from the server, that tickmark can still be taken off
manually.

I tried to like The Bat!, really

2005-07-27 Thread Dave Gorman
So after months and months of watching TB!'s progress, waiting and hoping
IMAP would become usable enough I could return to TB!, I decided yesterday
that I would give up, unsub from the lists, and just stick to an old copy
of TB! I have lying around for my one POP account (and the only reason I
would need that is because TB! saves attachments to their own folder, a
capability I haven't come across in other MUAs).

But this morning I saw a message from Allie (aka ACM, aka Curtis, etc) on a
non-Bat list recommending that people try out IMAP on the latest release
version of TB! and that it had come a long ways (of course including a YMMV
disclaimer).

So I downloaded 3.51.10, fired it up, added two IMAP accounts, and right
out of the box, 3 showstoppers:

1) On one account, after unsubscribing from the only mailbox that had new
messages, the account's unread message count didn't change (I guess this
isn't quite a showstopper, but it certainly is annoying).

2) Using server-side filtering, TB! still doesn't know I have new messages
in folders until I've selected those folders. (Maybe there is a way around
this, but I shouldn't have to go out of my way to have my mail client check
for new messages...)

3) After deleting a few messages from a folder, selecting any message in
the message list would display the incorrect message. (Again, perhaps there
is a fix for this, but I shouldn't have to trick my mail client into
showing me the currently selected message instead of randomly selecting a
message to show me...)

I haven't spent any time playing around with IMAP Fine Tune options or
anything else because I shouldn't have to. A mail client's default settings
should be sufficient to provide basic functionality. If I have to take
extra time to try to figure out what default settings need to be changed in
order to achieve basic functionality, something is just not right.

I realize that IMAP issues are apparently supposed to be a high priority in
the present beta series. However, I believe it has been two years since
IMAP was initially implemented in TB! and it still doesn't have basic
functionality out of the box!

So, I've waited an extra day in order to give TB! another chance, but I
think it's time now to simply give up on TB! and move on. I would still
consider TB! to be a top notch POP client, but for IMAP needs, almost any
other IMAP-capable MUA could exceed TB's performance.

Before I unsub, I just want to thank the TBUDL TBBETA communities for all
the help and assistance you have been over the years in answering
questions, overcoming problems, and making my TB experience much better and
more useful than it otherwise would have been.
