Re: Put message in Outbox

2011-05-26 Thread Sam Brown

From: Ian A. White r...@thebat.net

Even so, the mere fact that a message is in an Outbox should not mean
that it is automatically sent unless it has been scheduled to be sent,
or because the user has done a send queued mail in that account.

I have had to resort to setting a delay of 999 days, 99 hours and 59
minutes as this is the longest delay possible. So I'd better watch out
if I leave a message there for just short of 3 years. I wanted to set
it to the next century, but this is all I can do.

This is kind of a workaround that I know we shouldn't have to resort to, but
the best way to prevent a message in the outbox (in any email client) from
being sent automatically is to not provide the To address until you actually
intend on sending it. This is just something I do naturally so there's no
chance of me accidentally sending something until I absolutely know I want to
send it.

'Put message in outbox' has always resulted in the message being sent as
far back as I remember. If one wants to park a message in the outbox,
as opposed to queuing it for dispatch, which is the logical outcome of
putting a message in the outbox, the course is to 'save message as
draft' which I gather is what you were wanting to do.

RO You should have used 'save as draft'

IAW In hindsight, I should have, but before postponed sending was
IAW introduced, if you Put message in Outbox it would stay there until
IAW you did a general Send from that account.

IAW So I thought to myself, why don't I delete all the postponed send
IAW options as I could not find anyway to disable postponed sending as
IAW default, but if I go to postponed sending defaults and delete them
IAW all, the default values reappear!

IAW Well, lesson learned. I will either send immediately or save as a
IAW draft.

Why. I always put messages in the Outbox, so they get sent at next
Receive operation (of course I have combined receive/send activated),
as I find that immediate sending delays my work process. Messages in
the Outbox will be sent every ten minutes in the background, so I
don't need to worry about them.

I use Header Contains thebat.dutaint.com to filter (and move to a folder) all

doesn't work then: Header Contains forumname.

Yes, but only if you had automatic timed sending of queued mail. I
have never had The Bat! set to automatically send queued mail. As such
prior to the version that introduced postponed sending, I could (and
regularly did) have a message that I put in the outbox for days before
I did a send of queued mail.

I've been using TB! since 2002, and as far as I remember when I put
mail in the outbox without parking it, it went out. I'd expect nothing
else. Perhaps it depends on some account setting which you have
different now than you did before?

IAW prior to the version that introduced postponed sending, I could (and

Just a couple notes. First, the suggestion I made earlier that you simply not
fill in the To: field is faulty since you can't put a message into the Outbox
without filling in the To: field. Second, I think I know how this works. I had
to wait till I got home to verify, because I pretty much always have something
hanging around in the Outbox (for whatever reason). Right now I'm using version
5.0.8, but I think this has worked since the 1.x versions because it's just
how I've always configured it. Basically, I do not have automatic send/receive
turned on. I retrieve and send everything explicitly, nothing happens
automatically. I have messages set to be sent immediately. Therefore, when I
put something into the Outbox using the Put message into the outbox button,
it never gets sent. Seems a little counterintuitive, but I think the logic is,
if you click send, it goes immediately. If you put it in the outbox, it never
goes out until you click send.

I hope that is a useful data point!
