Thanks Jernej!

I've looked at the Editor/Viewer options a million times and must've skipped
over HTML Viewer. Once I disabled that everything fell into place, including
how my adding attachments.

As for changing the email address of this list, it was right where you said it
would be - thanks very much for the link.

Appreciate the help.

(Sort of) New User Questions

2022-06-09 Thread Fred Weissman

After many (many!) years of using v2, I finally ungraded to v10. Needless to
say, there have been a few changes, most of which I have figured out. Here are
a couple with which I need help.

1- I'm  a plain-text person, not HTML. I will use it for email when absolutely
necessary. I want my new messages -and- my replies to be in plain-text. Where
and what are the proper settings to make this the default no matter what format
the reply is?

2- Perhaps related to #1, when I add an attachment to a new message or a reply,
it becomes part of the body of the message. In v2 I was to have attachments as
icons in a pane to the left of the message editor. Again, how can I make this
the default?

3- In regards to this mailing list (TBUDL) how can I change my email address? I
signed up with one address, but am now needing to change to another.

Thanks.

No, TB is not a news reader. But there are good solutions with the aid

solution (working flawlessly) is explained in:

Apparently the archives do not go back much before the current month.
Or I couldn't find how to get into the April archives.

Would it be possible to post your solution here?
Or if it's lengthy, perhaps an e-mail to me and the person who original
posted the question.

Thanks.

Yes, they do go back that far. Try:

Ahhh ... there it is.
And it -is- rather lengthy.

Well, you can read newsgroups with TB actually. You need of course
third-party programs to get yourself a workaround. I only know this
very little as I'm not into newsgroups, but on the german TB list are
some users who use TB and some program named Korrnews or Hamster to
 read and send to NG.
I will try to get more info for you and try to get them to get in

Please post it publicly, as I'm sure there are other folks interested in

Re: slow spell check

2001-01-06 Thread Fred Weissman

NA If I'm not mistaken, TB!'s spell checker has 3 settings, with the 3rd being
NA the most comprehensive, but also taking the longest time. Perhaps you have
NA inadvertently chosen door #3. ;o)

I have it set at: Moderately fast and accurate. I go along with
accurate description, but moderately fast is being generous to say the
least. The problem is far more pronounced at the initial firing up of
the checker, and generally improves as editing goes on.

I have noticed an extreme slowdown a few versions ago, but I switched from
"moderately fast and accurate" to "fast but less accurate" and immediately
saw a speed up. But my initial symptoms were the same: -very- slow at the
initial firing up of the spell checker the -first- time in each new
message/reply. "Fast but less accurate" has made the problem less
pronounced.

Re: Moving parked messages

2000-07-31 Thread Fred Weissman

CM IMO, very awkward. To me "park" is a misnomer for the intent of the
CM function; "keep" would be more like it, and then it should be
CM "sticky," not disappear upon moving the message.

CM But, I fear we may be in the minority here.

As someone who has been losing hair over this for a while now, it's
nice to know that there's at least two others with the same point of
 view :)

Personally, I'd love to see an option to move (or Copy) Parked messages with a
filter, and _keep_ them Parked (i.e. "kept" ala Agent) once they have
 been filtered to their destination.

Make it -four- users who'd like to see this implemented.

The silent majority is starting to make noise. :-)

Message List Columns

2000-05-31 Thread Fred Weissman

I'm using 1.44 and seem to be having a problem with getting the Message
List Columns to "stick." From tree view of my accounts, I highlight the
account and then use the VIEW drop-down and select MESSAGE LIST COLUMNS. I
then remove the columns I don't wish to see and click OK. The unwanted
columns disappear from the list view. I click on a folder within that
account, and then go back to the main account folder, and the columns I
removed are back.

I discovered this when I tried to set some specific folders to use the
account default settings and they kept showing all the columns.

Can anyone else reproduce this?
Do we have a problem here?

The problem is that you can't set the account default or any other column

Re: Auto Format

2000-05-08 Thread Fred Weissman

I am having a real problem with the above. In order to keep the
cursor from scrolling down and not being visualized as I am typing,
one must have Auto Format on, or it seems. Every time I set the
darn thing, it turns itself off again. This happens with composing
new mail, or replying to any mail. There seems to be no default for
"on." This is driving me batty.

If the problem is the same as what I experienced this past weekend,
AutoFormat is not the problem. I have it turned off and I was having the
cursor drop below the bottom of the window. Thanks to Allie, it turns out
that this only happens when the horizontal scroll bar is present. Spread
your editor window out a little more horizontally, and/or change your
AutoWrap to something else. I'm set for 75.

HTH.

Editor Cursor Movement

2000-05-07 Thread Fred Weissman

I just upgraded to 1.42 and have found something that behaves differently
than it did in prior versions. I don't want to call it a bug just yet, but
I'd like to know if anyone else is experiencing it...

When I'm at the bottom of the editor window typing a new message or a
reply, and the line wraps, the new line doesn't scroll up in the window
so I can see what I'm typing. I can still type, but all I can see is the
very tip-top of the vertical cursor. In other words, the new line dips
below the bottom edge of the window.

I'm 99.9% certain this didn't happen in prior versions. And I've checked
the 1.42 "What's New" list and I see no mention of anything having to do
with scrolling.

Opinions please?

I experience this as well /only/ if the horizontal scroll bar is visible.
I generally don't see it anyway because when editing, I generally use an
editor window 90 characters wide and also, I re-wrap quoted text.

The editor seems to ignore the presence of the horizontal scroll-bar and
the very last line of text gets hidden behind it.

YEP
That's the problem ... if the horizontal scroll-bar is visible, then the
cursor and the current line drops down below. I wrap quoted text at 75
characters, but now I've spread my window out a little more and that makes
the horizontal bar disappear.

Thanks Allie.

Re: 1.41 .exe size

2000-03-11 Thread Fred Weissman

FW Given the relatively minor fixes/changes shown on the 1.41 change
FW list, could someone explain to me why the .exe file has doubled in
FW size to just over three megs?

Because it's an uncompressed executable. After you install the full
version, you'll note that the the_bat.exe file is also 3MB.

I beg to differ.
The file size of thebat.exe (version 1.41 final) which I downloaded from rit's
beta only section, and am currently using, is 3,091,968.

Are you saying the if I downloaded the_bat.exe and ran the full install,
the .exe would be one-third the size? If so, this doesn't make sense. Why
have two different size executables? And furthermore, why not have the
smaller one available for those of use who don't need the full install?

Re: Use of Quote Character in TB

2000-02-07 Thread Fred Weissman

Someone posted an indepth explaination about a month ago, unfortunately I
don't have access to my archives at the moment to find out exactly who or
when, but the basic idea is that since TB supports the

name This line should be highlighted as a quote.

Nope, it isn't.

syntax, then if the line does not start with a space, and there is a
somewhere in the first 20 or so characters (I'm not sure of that figure),
then TB will treat it as a quote. Unfortunately it is a byproduct, and not
a bug. I don't think there is anyway that TB could support the above
mentioned syntax and not exhibit the behaviour you mentioned.

So the workaround for outgoing e-mail is to always indent your paragraphs
by a space or two. Unfortunately I don't think there is a viable
 workaround for incoming mail.

name This line should not be highlighted as a quote.

And this one -is-.

lmtdc often you want it to auto check for mail.

When I go to Account Properties I don't find Options and I don't
find any little box that says "Periodical checking each." All I find
is an "Edit User" form. What's the problem?

On the left side of the 'edit user' window is a tree. The fourth item in
that tree is 'options.' Click on it and on the right side of the window,
at the top, you'll see 'mailbox checking.' Select either (or both) of the
two options presented.

That's it, F4! Thanks! This is a fine solution, and another example of

Is there an equivalent for a -forward- quoting selected text?
I often need to forward only a portion of a message, and this would make it
much easier than deleting all the unnecessary sections.

That's correct Fred... although TB's Spell Checker doesn't ignore all
future occurrences of the word in that one message... it keeps on flagging
them for some reason. Do you use Auto Correct? If so, what's the secret to
enabling it, other than the obvious option of turning it on via Spell
 Checker/Options/Auto Correct? I've taken a look at the Correct.tlx
Dictionary, and it's full of words, so I would imagine it's loaded on my
 install... just not useable?

Hmmm ... I just played around with a few things and I do think we've
discovered a bug. Oops, e, I mean an undocumented negative feature.
First off, under 'spell checker' from the edit window, I have 'automatic
checking' enabled. Under options, I have 'auto correct' enabled.

I just wrote typed the word "wrong" incorrectly three times:
wrng wrng wrng

At first they were flagged as incorrect. I right-clicked on one of them
and selected 'ignore all' and the red line did not disappear. Then I
opened up the actual spell checker window by right-clicking one of the
incorrect words and selecting 'suggest more'. I then selected 'ignore all'
and the red line disappeared. I deleted them, and retyped them again, and
they are not flagged now. I opened up a new message window and typed
in 'wrng' and it was not flagged. Then I closed Bat completely and
reopened it. I typed 'wrng' again, and now it is flagged. BUT the three
'wrng' above, and not flagged.

Methinks the right-click version of 'ignore all' isn't connected to
anything. IOW, it doesn't work. And I hope the guys at RIT are reading
this.

I know this doesn't solve your problem, but it certainly confirms that
something is wrng. Oops ... I mean wrong.

Re: Spell Checker Oddity ?

2000-01-26 Thread Fred Weissman

In Reference to "Spell Checker Oddity ?" From Nick Andriash:

NA Fred, it's supposed to automatically correct common mistyping's ;o) such
NA as Febuary... in which case, as soon as you are finished the word _and_
NA the word exists in the correct.tlx Dictionary, then the word would/should
NA automatically be corrected to February for you without the user having to
NA do anything.

It's there, just quirky. If you type Febuary you'll notice a more
squared off underline than the usual zigzag type for misspelling. For
those words a double right click will "auto correct". I think there
is also a keyboard shortcut but what it is alludes me at the moment.

AH HAH!

I've noticed that 'different' underline and never realized why.
Thanks.
And yes, a double-right-click does auto correct it.
But that's not exactly -auto- in my mind. Auto should mean no user
intervention.

When (if) you get an answer from RIT, would you mind forwarding it to me,
as the traffic here is getting to the point where I'm barely skimming the
subject headers.

Thanks again.

Re: Spell Checker Oddity ?

2000-01-26 Thread Fred Weissman

NA Thanks Nick... always saw the bolded line, but didn't realize that double
NA right clicking would do the trick... such a "feature" isn't documented
NA anywhere. :o)

 It's there under Spell Checking:

"- Intelligent suggestions for misspelled words - SSCE can locate
suggested replacements using either typographical (looks like) or
phonetic (sounds like) matching. Suggestions are scored by the degree
of closeness with the misspelled word, and the list of suggestions is
returned in decreasing score order. The most commonly misspelled words
are underlined by square-wave-line and can be corrected with mouse
 double-click on this word"

...but kind of hidden in gobs of text!

"Hidden" being the operative word. I must've read the help file for the
spell checker half a dozen times during this thread and I never -once- saw
that paragraph.

I did, however, find a number of occasions where the word "directory" is
used instead of "dictionary."

Re: Spell Checker Oddity ?

2000-01-25 Thread Fred Weissman

I have "auto correct" enabled, and if I see a word that's been underlined
because of a spelling error, but decide not to add the word to my User's
Dictionary... or correct it, and choose "Ignore All"... if I happen to
type the word again, the Spell Checker will underline it yet again, as if
to ignore it's own "Ignore All" feature?

That behavior is similar to the spell checker in MSWord, among others.

"Ignore All" as I understand it, tells the checker to ignore all occurrences
of that word for -this- message (or use) only. Since it's not being added
to the user dictionary, it will flag it as unknown/incorrect the next
time the spell checker is called into action.

HTH.

Re: Warning! Check Your Temp Directories!

2000-01-15 Thread Fred Weissman

If you do find TB files in your temp directory, I would appreciate
it (as would RITLabs) if you could check for the following:
1. File locations (c:\temp, c:\windows\temp, or elsewhere)
2. File names
3. File MIME types (are they all multi-part)?
4. Message dates
5. File sizes

I'm a new, and recently registered, user.

I installed TheBat (v1.38e) on December 25th.
Based on Keith's warning, I have found 112 BAT.TMP files (totaling 4.8
-megs-) in my windows\temp directory. All but three of them were created
on December 26th, which is probably the day I imported thousands of messages
from my former mail client, Agent. The other four, which are the only ones
of zero byte size, were created January 11. Of the 109 files that weren't
zero bytes, they range in size from a couple of hundred bytes to one that
is a little over a meg.

Here's a semi-common link... of the 109 that aren't zero bytes, they all
contain -attachments-. -Most- are multi-part MIME, but not all. I have
done a search through my current folders, looking for the subject headers
found in some of the BAT.TMP files and a good number of them were found.
An equal number of them weren't found, which means I deleted them at some
point since the import.

Maybe this relates, maybe it doesn't. When I first installed TheBat, I had
attachments set to be stored in a separate directory. I changed that
option very quickly to saving them in the message. I dunno.

Re: Template Help Please

FW I have a folder set up, under my INBOX, from which I want to forward
FW messages to a mailing list. This list will be one-way only - outbound from
FW me. Perhaps someone will reply, but the replies will be to me only, not to
FW the list.

I had this problem before, and someone (I think it was Allie) told me to check the
properties for the address in my address book. Meaning, I would try to send my Dad
emails,
but once I would put the curser in to "body" part of the message, my CURRENT template
would go poof and it would show a totally different template.

He told me to look in my address book, and find [my Dad's] email address. Right
click, and
see if I had set up ADDRESS SPECIFIC templates for that email address. So if you go
into
your Address Book, right click on the email address which is having a problem, choose
Properties, then there should be a tickable-box which says something like "Use
Specific
Template For This Address". Make sure that is UN-ticked. This helped me and solved
the
problem with Dad's address (and others, but I was to embarrassed to post *how many*
on TBUDL
 heehee).

Good point.
I just took a look and it is indeed unchecked.
So -that's- not the answer.
(I wish it were that simple.)

If that doesn't work, maybe someone else would have an idea?? :D

I sure hope so.
This is getting very frustrating.

Use capital letters when writing names of macros (%TEXT, not %Text).
Sometimes TB ignores such non-capitalized macros.

I just went to the template to change it and it already is in CAPS.
I tried again just to make sure, and it still doesn't work.

 %TO="Phans of Phunnies [EMAIL PROTECTED]"
 %BCC="jokesgg list"

Just tried your template (with non-capitalized macros, btw) - works
fine here. May be your E:\sigs\shorttag.txt file is causing the
problem? Try removing the %COOKIE macro and see...

Already tried.
With no %COOKIE whatsoever, and with the %COOKIE equaling a test text
sentence following the macro.
Still no success.

Since you got it to work, would you like to run the list for me? g

Yes - I've seen messages completely change when going in to edit. It
turned out to be a conflicting template in the address book against
the [EMAIL PROTECTED] address entry which overrides the folder
template when first going into edit mode.

ACK!
BINGO!!!

Could it be something like that?

-Exactly- like that.
When I changed the %TO= from [EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED] it
worked.
Except there are no templates in the address book. But that
doesn't really matter as it's now working.

Take six gold stars from the petty cash box for yourself.

And good luck solving the Mailer Daemon problem. I know of three people
who joined the list within the past week (me being one of them) and
are/were totally confused by those messages. We were starting to take them
personally.

FWIW, two of the three have already registered, and the third
will in a day or two. So as AVK said on the list, the increased frequency
of those messages sure could be a sign of the growing popularity of TheBat.

Thanks again.

I have a similar template set up for new messages, with the only difference

Yes, with Netscape already open, it pastes the URL into the location window

launching like it should.

Go to accounts, properties, options and uncheck "Confirm immediate

directly using cntrl+enter, then enter again, like this (bye):

Errr, 'Confirm immediate sending' had no effect, but under 'transport'
changing 'Delivery Immediate' and 'Delivery Deferred' caused these two to
flip-flop.

Position of windows...

2000-01-01 Thread Fred Weissman

I'm another new user of TheBat, and I have a question about the positioning
of TheBat's windows. Specifically, the editing window.

I do -not- run Bat in maximized window mode, preferring to have "medium"
size windows open, so I can have access to other things on my desktop. No
matter where the editing window is positioned when I close it, it reopens
towards the upper left of my desktop. Sometimes in the extreme upper left
corner, and sometimes just up in that vicinity. It -rarely- opens up
exactly where it was when I shut it.

Any suggestions for keeping it's position in one place?
I've heard from two other new users that this happens to them also, so I'm
fairly certain this is a "feature" of TheBat.

Thanks...

URLs to Netscape via TheBat

2000-01-01 Thread Fred Weissman

When I position the cursor over a URL in TheBat (1.38e), it changes to a

double-click on the URL and nothing happens. I assume it should launch
Netscape and head out to the site in question. Am I missing something
here?

Not related, but confusing...

In the message editor, when I am finished, I hit F2 to send the missive to
the Outbox queue. When I hit SHIFT-F2, a little window comes up asking me
if I want to send the message. I assume it means right now. I have a
friend who is using the same version of Bat as I am, and his F2 and
SHIFT-F2 actions are reversed. Even as listed in the dropdown menu.
Can anyone shed some light on this one?
