Re: The whole 'Re[2]' fiasco

2001-09-16 Thread Timothy J. Luoma

I have looked more closely at other lists and I can see the you and
Allie are right about this. The numbered replies don't solve the
 problem.

And, since most mailers don't recognize Re[0-9]: as a valid Re: they put a Re: in
front of it, and make the situation worse.

(If we want to bash O/OE we could also point out that they remove ANYTHING before a :
so that if you write your Subject as:

Subject: Joe: Regarding Tuesday's meeting

the reply will be

Subject: Re: Regarding Tuesday's meeting

but that's another rant for another list)

Add %SINGLERE to your reply templates where you don't want this to
 appear.

Ah, thanks... I was looking for something to remove from the templates

Re: The whole 'Re[2]' fiasco

2001-09-15 Thread Timothy J. Luoma

I am not sure that making The Bat! more like LookOut Distress
 is the way to go.

You are missing my point here. I only said, to give them
familiar ground to walk on, not make TB! look behave like
 Outlook\s*(Express)?.

It has nothing to do with Outlook, it's the way EVERY single other program out there
does it.

It's only slightly better than tagging -reply onto the END of the Subject, like some
other program did a little bit ago

When I switched (from Eudora 4) the numbered replies was one
of the features that I immediately liked.

Well you could always turn it on if you wanted it, but for new users, it's not good
for the reason that:

The same numbered replies get new fellow TB! users bashed on
 mailing lists.

And it breaks sorting for other folks who aren't using TB

And then you get Re: Re[2] whatever

I was tired of seeing multiple Re:s

TB! won't give you those. It's either numbered Re: or plain
 *single* Re:

But when someone else replied to a numbered Re: then you get multiples.

threading make The Bat! the premier client for managing mail
 from lists.

Oh yeah, now you're talking. Threading is excellent :)

Be that as it may, and I'm not debating it at all, changing the Reply string is not
good for cooperating with other mailers.

It is, I agree, mildly annoying when someone posts an signoff message

Nothing short of electro-shock is going to help people figure this out.

Some people just don't understand how things work and can't be bothered to read the
information provided.

I'd say we have burned more band width discussing the most recent
unsubscribe message, than would be taken over the next 6 to 12 months
with similar errors by other users.

Re: OT: Sending mail

2001-09-09 Thread Timothy J. Luoma

I understand that he needs to use different SMTP relays depending on
the connection he is using, probably because the relays of his company
and his ISP allow only connections from certain IP addresses. But
anyway, as Timothy hasn't clarified this, we cannot know.

Let me then clarify ;-)

I have a laptop and need to switch my SMTP servers in the morning (when I go to work)
and in the evening (when I get home).

I have two different providers and they will not allow me to relay (which is good for
anti-spam, bad for mobile users).

So I either need an easy way to switch SMTP servers **or** a SMTP server on my own
machine (Dell Inspiron 7500/650mhz/256mb ram/Win2kPro)

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm keeping a list!

Re: OT: Sending mail

2001-09-09 Thread Timothy J. Luoma

As alternative, you may set on HOST file as :
 xx.xx.xx.xx smtp
 #yy.yy.yy.yy smtp
 ^
 watch here!

xx.xx.xx.xx = smtp address in office
 yy.yy.yy.yy - smtp address at home/ISP.

While at home, just change to :
 #xx.xx.xx.xx smtp
 yy.yy.yy.yy smtp

then put smtp on TB! transport properties.

That's fine, but then I have to restart TheBat as it appears (and I may be wrong) to
read the hosts file only at startup.

I have tried that method before.

Is there a program I can use that will let me set localhost as my
 own SMTP server?

You may run any SMTP (relay) server, such Mercury or others, but this
 will burden your PC.

Ram is cheap. I've got 256 and could easily goto 512

Why don't you open a (free) account at www.myrealbox.com ? You can use
the SMTP server regardless of the From or Reply-To address, or which
 ISP you are connected to.

Because I had no idea that it existed and had never heard of it.

Now I have, and it works great!

(How do they stay in business, I wonder??)

OT: Sending mail

2001-09-07 Thread Timothy J. Luoma

The recent conversation about multiple accounts and the various programs led me to
this question:

I have to switch TheBat's preferences at least twice a day -- when I am sending mail
at home, I need to use my home provider's SMTP relay; and when I am at work I need to
use work's SMTP.

So far the best I have come up with is making an entry in my hosts file so that I
can use home for the home SMTP and work for the work SMTP.

Is there a program I can use that will let me set localhost as my own SMTP server?

If so, that would be remarkably handy and I'd love to hear more, esp. about good free
programs :-)

Thanks!

hot keys

OK, call me crazy, but I would like to be able to use ctrl+shift+r for reply all
and alt+r for reply to sender (rather than reply to list)

Is there a way to change what keys do what?

What is auto-format *supposed* to do?

2001-08-30 Thread Timothy J. Luoma

If I paste a really long line into a Compose window, it doesn't wrap.

So I highlight the line and do control-shift-F to reformat it.

But it doesn't.

What's the solution to reformat an overly long line -- or will theBat do it when I hit
send?

ZoneAlarm TheBat

ZoneAlarm does not want to let TheBat access the Internet, especially for *sending*
email, even though it is listed in the list of Programs in ZoneAlarm that are allowed
Internet access.

Is anyone else having this problem?

I am using the newest versions under Win2k.

Thanks

[tbudl] Re: Test

2001-08-28 Thread Timothy J. Luoma

Why does a mailing list for a mail program that can sort on any header
need to have a Subject tag for each message?

Now I have to write another procmail script for the server to yank it
out.

We now have Re: [tbudl] Re: Test for a Subject line (at least that's
how it appears before I hit send)

TjL, who dislikes list-tags that can't be turned off
