It works like most skilled...but, you should apply it correctly. In the
filter you have sent, under the Rule tab you have checked Recipient
instead Entire header. It's like entering wrong doors expecting the
right effect. (-: Sensations differ.

Well, I'd prefer not to leave spam in the inbox.

Of course not.

Lets take it step by step.

1. You receive new mail - all mail first goes to the inbox, and it is
processed by all incoming filters. Filters are executed from top to bottom,
as they are shown in the sorting office.

2. Your first filter is good mail (you could also call it a whitelist).
It checks if the TO field really contains Your Name [EMAIL PROTECTED] -
if so, it moves the message to the folder PayPal, or whatever...

3. The next filter is the spam filter (blacklist). It checks if the TO
field does NOT contain the good string, and if doesn't, the message is
moved to the Junk folder.

I get hundreds of bogus aliases daily that are all spam. Occasionally
the alias is correct, then it is an order.

Here is the example:
Good: Correct_name [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bad : Bogus random name or blank [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Good needs to go to stay in the INBOX (for further manual processing)
Bad need to go to the spam bucket (or better yet, deleted)

Good point. And note the correctly addressed emails NEVER have the

Thats not an alias. Those are just realnames. :-)

Aliases are different mail addresses within a domain that lead to one and
the same mail account. You could also call them redirections.

For example, you could have [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
[EMAIL PROTECTED] both end in the same mail account which
has the real address [EMAIL PROTECTED]. You're collecting
three mail addresses in one mail account that way but can still keep them
apart according to the TO address.

Of course. The spam filter is usually the last filter in the list of

ASK Of course. The spam filter is usually the last filter in the list of
ASK filters, so that it has the lowest priority. First you sort out the good
ASK ones, then the spam filter takes care of the leftovers.

I would think that if I need 2 filters I would take *ALL* mail
addressed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and FIRST send it to the spam
bucket THEN filter the spam folder for correct_name
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and return these to the pending orders
folder.

BUT the number of / order of filters is only 1/2 the question. I also
do not know how to handle the spaces in the right/wrong addresses in
this(these) filer(s).

I would think the most elegant way to do it would be to ONLY move the
BAD junk but I do not know how to tell a filter what I want.

Just for a refresher (appologies to those who don't want/need this)
here is the full details of what I had said...

I have an email address that attracts a lot of spam, however any mail
that goes to that address AND IS NOT spam is a PayPal notification of a
payment and, therefore very important, an order that needs to be shipped.

Examples:
Good address: My real name [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bad address: Some random name or none at all [EMAIL PROTECTED]

SO...
If a mssg comes in INcorrectly addressed I want to direct the mssg into
my JUNK folder otherwise I want it to be left in the IN-box.

I do not know how to tell the Sorting Office interface to
1) handle the spaces in the correct address and
2) how to move the mssg if it is _NOT_ good.

Maybe I need 2 filters? I am using ver 2.12.

Would anyone please advise?

Thanks much,
Rich

you lost me there. filter the mail you want to keep. put it whereever
you want it. then all that's left is spam in the inbox, or your filter
could be if a/then b, and go on to next step c, which is to move it to
your junk folder. maybe b can be to flag the message or some such, and
just leave it in the inbox, but why not have a this is good mail
folder.

Well, I'd prefer not to leave spam in the inbox.

DAC or your filter could be if a/then b, and go on to next step c,

This is what I was hoping to learn to do, but there were 2 questions
as to how to do it.

DAC maybe b can be to flag the message or some such, and just leave
DAC it in the inbox,

I'd prefer to have the filter do more work than just flag an e-mail...
If it can flag an e-mail it can move an e-mail, no?

DAC but why not have a this is good mail folder.

The pending orders folder I mentioned is such a folder.

 Thanks much,

I was *hoping* for a magic bullet filter. As _ALL_ the spam
emails DO NOT have 'real_name' in the TO: field. It *sounds* like an
easy filter for someone who hows where/what to click to get the
desired results. (Just that's not me!)

DAC why not filter everything with the RIGHT NAME, then you have made the
DAC same separation.

It's still 2 filters then: 1 to get the junk to the junk and the other

Nothing to do with The Bat! but one suggestion is to change the
email address your PayPal account sends these notifications to. ;-)

 Examples:
Good address: My real name [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Bad address:
Some random name or none at all
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 SO...

IIRC there is some wisdom that suggests messages are better not
left in the Inbox.

Don't have v2 to hand but

Recipient Contains
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and
Recipient Does not contain My real name

Would seem the sort of conditions needed for an Action of Move to
JUNK folder

Hmm... If you would reorganize your filters to accept only messages with
your real name, you would get rid of all sorts of spam, literally (with
no additional software/strategies). It though requires small change in
routines, both yours and perhaps some of your (valid) correspondents
(in instructing them to address their messages to you always including
your real/full name).

Then would be all so easy. You would in Selective Download filter under
the tab Rule put rich gregory [EMAIL PROTECTED] and under the tab
Advanced would check Action and None of strings should match and
everything which is not addressed as above would be deleted from server.
Works like charm/magic.

I had big problems with loads of mail, people would simply get somewhere
my address, even not knowing my real/full name, and then would just
shoot up.

In the same field you would then just add the usual Reply-To or
similar headers corresponding to the lists/newsletters etc., you are
subscribed to, and that would be it.
