JP Should all filters have this option selected? Definitely not. Among all (100+)of my filters there's no more than one or two that have this option enabled. A message will be compared against the first filter, if it matches it'll be processed and it won't be compared against the next filter (unless the first filter has 'continue processing...' enabled) If it doesn't match, it'll be compared to the next filter and on and on and on, until it finds a match (without 'continue processing...' enabled) or until it runs out of filters. Basically this means that, as filtering takes time and processor power, you should put your busiest filters on top, because that means that you won't waste processor time on comparing lots of messages against filters that won't be triggered anyway. Should you enable 'continue processing' for all filters you're losing whatever you gained with an efficient filter order. When you look into my sorting office, the first filter you'll see is my the one that acts upon the spam header inserted by my mail server, next you see some filters regarding some heavy duty mailing lists. The first eight filters process more than 95% of my incoming mail. I don't gain anything by comparing all that mail against my other 100+ filters. What complicates this story are subfilters. When a filter is triggered by a message, the subfilters will be compared against that message, when the filter doesn't get triggered, the subfilters will be left alone. -- Groetjes, Roelof Uh, yeah...I MEANT to do that! Filtering issues.
Hi Bat! Fans, Maybe I am missing something here, but I am having problems with filtering, or at least the way Bat! handles the filters. 1. How do I determine which filter/s point to a folder? (Agent has a good system in which it automatically names the filters after the folder to which they refer). 2. Why, for goodness sake, can't one filter apply to both mail in and mail out? (K-Mail in Linux does this nicely). 3. When writing a filter on sent mail and a mail is highlighted in the Sent Mail folder, the drop down Use for box should automatically show Outgoing Mail. 4. There seems to be no log record of what filters are applied and which fail. 5. When I filter my in box, the result ~always~ shows 4 messages filtered (out of about 200 in the folder), but nothing is moved. Which messages are filtered and fail, and how can I debug this? I suppose others could add to this list? (Agent has a good JP system in which it automatically names the filters after the folder to which JP they refer). I'm not sure what you mean. Point to a folder as source or as target? Over here the filters have meaningful names like 'TBUDL list' for incoming TBUDL messages and since my folders are named in the same system... JP 2. Why, for goodness sake, can't one filter apply to both mail in and mail JP out? (K-Mail in Linux does this nicely). Lots of my filters wouldn't do that anyway. As I'm using a lot of conditions that use specific strings added by processing servers for my incoming filters. JP 3. When writing a filter on sent mail and a mail is highlighted in the Sent JP Mail folder, the drop down Use for box should automatically show Outgoing JP Mail. I never use that way to create a filter. You had me looking for a bit what you were talking about. Anyway, I don't know about that. But this is about a part I never use, so my opinion isn't really relevant. JP 4. There seems to be no log record of what filters are applied and which JP fail. There is a log about what filters are applied, it's among the rest of the account log. And I wouldn't like it at all when the failed filters would be mentioned too. That would mean my account log had an additional 100+ lines for every incoming message, just mentioning the filters weren't applied. That would make the log essentially useless. JP 5. When I filter my in box, the result ~always~ shows 4 messages filtered JP (out of about 200 in the folder), but nothing is moved. Which messages are JP filtered and fail, and how can I debug this? Check your log about the filters that are triggered. As for why there aren't any messages moved, I guess they aren't moving filters, maybe they simply set a colour group. And as all messages in your Inbox have been processed while incoming, it seems very likely that any messages that should be moved were so on arrival. If you think one of them should be moved by one of your filters, it is likely that it is one of the four messages processed by another filter that didn't have 'continue processing with other filters' checked. JP I suppose others could add to this list? I have some wishes for the sorting office, but they're about additional actions and conditions, not about the interface. What I'd like are some additional options for comparing to the address book. You can check for AB groups contain: sender, first recipient, all recipients, sender and all recipients, sender and first recipient. I'm missing 'any of the recipients' and 'none of the recipients' My second wish regarding this is to be able to compare any message header against the AB, that's an add on to to Robert D's wish recently mentioned here mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] A filtering action I consider useful is 'mark as spam' and 'mark as NOT spam' I don't use any anti-spam plug-in anymore, but in the days I did, I really would have like that. -- Groetjes, Roelof WinErr 007: System price error - Inadequate money spent on hardware The Bat! 3.80.03 Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 2 1 pop3 account, server on LAN OTFE enabled P4 3GHz 2 GB RAM pgpMkM0Fq3tIg.pgp Description: PGP signature Current version is 3.71.03 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
