Filtering questions.

2005-09-09 Thread John Phillips
Hi Bat! Fans,

Is it possible to use the one filter for both icoming and outgoing mail, or
must two filters be used?

Using two isp accounts; is it possible for one filter to apply to both?

What is the purpose of Common Filters?

T.I.A.!

Yes.
After checking my own incoming and outgoing filters I can only say
that it wouldn't make sense to use 1 filter. My incoming filters check
for senders and my outgoing filters check for recipients. (Yes, I've
got exceptions to both rules, but nevertheless...)

JP Using two isp accounts; is it possible for one filter to apply to both?

Yes.

JP What is the purpose of Common Filters?

To use the same filter for multiple accounts.
When you're using common filters, those will be checked first and then
the account filters will be checked.

I have lots of filters which deal with subjects. One filter which
always looked for a particular subject matter in incoming and outgoing
would be very useful for that.

This doesn't appear to be working.

I have a K9 filter set up on both isp accounts, transferred this to Common

Is there something else I should be doing here to get common filters to

Go into sorting office and copy the filter you are trying and then
paste it here. We will take a look at it.

Another issue you may want to check is the order of your filters. I
can't remember which comes first account filters of common filters. If
it is account filters it may be possible the messages are being caught
by an account filter that is not allowing continuing processing.

First thing to do is check that there's not some thing else triggering before it
(check the log). Second thing is to make sure Share with is ticked for the
accounts you need.

Third thing is to not play with filters early on a Saturday :-)

Filtering questions

2005-09-07 Thread z5worg

1. What is the difference between Outgoing message and Replied message
filters? e.g. If I want to sort all messages to TBUDL into a separate
folder, some messages (like this one) would be a new message while
others would be replies. Do I need 2 filters -- one for Outgoing and
one for Replies? If not, what are the circumstances that one would put
a filter into Replied Messages?

2. I have a filter for Outgoing message; and I want that message marked
as UNread. Looking under the Action tab, the only option is to marked it
Read. But all outgoing messages are automatically treated as Read
(Marked the message as read is unchecked). So that checkbox doesn't
seem to make sense. Anyway, is there a way to get TB to mark a filtered
Outgoing message as UNread?

Z 1. What is the difference between Outgoing message and Replied message
Z filters?

Incoming filters are applied when the message is incoming
Read filters are applied as soon as the message changes from 'read' to 'unread'
Replied filters are being applied when you reply to the message
Outgoing filters are being applied after the message has been sent

Selective download filters are something else, they're being applied
while the message is still on the server.

Z e.g. If I want to sort all messages to TBUDL into a separate

In this case you'll only need a message for outgoing messages.

Z If not, what are the circumstances that one would put a filter into
Z Replied Messages?

You get a number of messages that need a reply, but don't have time
for that right now. So you move them to folder called 'Pending', now
you've got this replied filter that moves them out of 'Pending' as
soon as you reply to them.

Z 2. I have a filter for Outgoing message; and I want that message marked
Z as UNread. Looking under the Action tab, the only option is to marked it
Z Read.

That must be a difference between v2 and v3, as I have a 'Mark message
as unread' action immediately below 'Mark as read'

Z Anyway, is there a way to get TB to mark a filtered Outgoing
Z message as UNread?

Upgrade to v3?
You could try to 'mark as read', maybe it's just toggling the read
status, but I don't know, it's been awhile since I used v2.

OK... so I go to View / Display / Advanced Filtering. Then I go to
Header and tell it that I want to view the messages where the
recipient's name contains dutaint.com . But it only shows me the
ones where dutaint.com is visible. What I mean is the ones that are

those messages in a message window, they show this in the To field:
Dierk Haasis [EMAIL PROTECTED]

dutaint.com is visible there, but not in the message list window -
but, to me, the filter should still detect what is really there.
HELP?? Thanx!!

Filtering Questions (was: Re: changing source folder (for filtering))

I do wish there were a better helpfile for the Bat.

(I'm not just picking on you Susanne, this filter thread just happened
to be the one open right now.) If I may interject, for anyone looking
for filtering basics, check out the filtering page in the FAQ. It is
really well written and even has screen shots to help you through it.
It is a little out of date with the Kill Filters, but the rest seems
to be fully applicable.

Check out: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/filtering.html

I wouldn't have to bother everbody on this list with my
 questions.

Don't feel bad about having to ask questions. With a program this
powerful, it can be hard to wrap your brain around *every* detail.
Good manual or otherwise.

Could the reason be that the (SA) is added to the subject line
 later by egroups?

I would think that the brackets may be causing more problems than
anything else. I don't use brackets in filters, except in Regular
Expressions. But there they have a well defined meaning.
