I have used the internal backup and restore function in TB! when
moving to a new computer, with no problems at all.

On the new computer (in this case, after formatting and reinstalling
Windows), download the installer and it will ask you whether you want
to restore from a backup. Point it to the backup file, and you'll have
a clone of your previous TB!, with fodler, filters, settings and of
course mails. For all accounts that you backed up. Even your licence
will have been backed up and restored.

Can't be more convenient.

It is possible to re-install Windows without having to reinstall all
rour programs.

Make sure you keep copies somewhere other than your hard drive, just
in case. Although, 4.2.44 is still available for download from
. And you
might possibly be able to get RitLabs to re-send the key if you have
the same address it went to originally.

You should be OK if you keep a copy of thebat_pro_4-2-44.msi file and
your licence Key Block. The changes are supposedly only a problem if
you try to revert back to the earlier TB! version.

I would back up the whole TB! mail directory, the whole TB! program
directory, and the relevant registry key. But that is probably
overkill.

Have you tried entering the product key from the sticker under the
notebook? Usually this works around the problem.

Yes, it should work without problems.

Let the more knowledgeable chime in but there was a database change
with v5 and if you run v5 or later, it is not backwardly compatible

Back up your RIT reg key and put it in your mail folder then ARCHIVE
it and move it somewhere off the machine, or at least the C:\ drive
The Bat's backup can be flakey. I tried it and had about a third of
the files unusable and unable to restore them

Check your private mail in about 5 minutes for something that may make
all this moot :)

Need Advice on Backing Up and Reinstalling

2014-02-17 Thread Mike Greenbaum

I am currently using The Bat! version 4.2.44.2 on a PC with a Windows 7
operating system.

I received an error message this morning saying that my copy of Windows 7 was
not a genuine one. It is genuine and came loaded on my laptop from Dell.

I called Dell support, and after trying a number of other workarounds, they've
decided that my Windows 7 has become corrupted--or at least some files on it
have--and I need to have the operating system reinstalled.

They will work with me on this, but obviously it means I'm going to have to
reinstall all my programs after the operating system is re-done, and that
includes The Bat!

My questions are three:

1a. Will I be able to reinstall the same version of The Bat? It has given me no
problems, and I seem to be reading that people are having problems with version
6. I still have the thebat_pro_4-2-44.msi file from when I originally installed
it and I do have my Key Block.

1b. If I have to use a newer version of The Bat! are there any changes I need
to know about that will affect my ability to retrieve my mail from the backups?

2. What files will I need to back up?

---My mail directory setting in Preferences lists: %APPDATA%\The Bat!\ I
assume this means my mail directory is in
C:\Users\MSG\AppData\Roaming\TheBat!\Janus1 where MSG is my user name and
Janus1 is my mail account name. I already back up my Users\MSG directory every
night to an online backup site called IBackup.

---In addition, I do an automatic daily backup to a file called
C:\TheBatBackups\Batbackup2.tbk This daily backup is set to back up all address
books and all accounts. This also is sent every night to the IBackup site.

---Is there anything else I need to back up in order to retrieve all my mail
after I reinstall TheBat!?

3. After I reinstall TheBat! I will copy my backed up Users\MSG file onto my
computer. Do I also have to restore the .tbk file to The Bat! or will just
moving the previous User folder be enough?

Thanks for any help.
