MP Laurence probably has cured the problem, while we're still discussing it.

MP BTW: you probably won't be able to persuade me to ever install Antivir
MP on one of my computers anymore. But if you and many other people are
MP happy with it: why not?

Thanks to all for the advice. system still not responding to The Bat!
 and still slow despite:

 a) removing ZA Pro
 b) removing AV
 c) removing the offending patch

Have wiped HDD, re-installed XP Pro and again patched to SP1 + latest patches (-
811493
security patch). On a plain system - No AV or Software firewall - it
is still slow and locking up the PC.

Any chance that it could be that my mail file is on another disk
drive (although it has always been there)?

I don't think you can make this deduction unless the recovery was from
an drive or partition image.

MP In some places on this earth you might find some people confirming that a
MP particular Microsoft patch for XP slows down the computer.

See Martin's message at
mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] about the MS patch
811493 which has been confirmed. Since the MS link is either invalid or
the site down IIRC the patch slows applications on startup.

I would suggest a complete wipe of ZA from Laurence's PC, and install
another FW. When I upgraded my OS from Win98 to WinXP Pro and did a
complete clean install using ZA my browser, IE, and TB slowed to a
crawl. I wiped the HD installed Kerio and my problem vanished
immediately.

I'm not saying ZA is the problem. Given my experience and others I would
start with replacing ZA. I use to be a ZAP advocate from version 1 on,
but it will be awhile before I even try it. Obviously from others
posting positive experiences with ZA or ZAP, everyone seems to have
their own opinion.

The link isn't invalid, it unfortunately included the right
parentheses from the parenthetical comment it was sitting in. Use this
link:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;819634

[the original was this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;819634). which
doesn't work]

And yes indeed, microsoft suggests removing the patch, and using their
updated version or not using it all. looks like for the average user
with a one person computer, that patch (not even the updated one)
isn't needed anyway.

Yes, of course, if Laurence had had a drive image there probably
wouldn't have been a problem.

Kaspersky.

PC Lock ups and generally slow performance of The Bat!

2003-06-04 Thread Laurence Ell
Hello TBUDL,

Just started to use the Bat in prefernece to MS Outlook Express.
When I first loaded it everything fine and worked a treat - very
  fast.
However, after suffering a system crash (HDD failure) I have had to replace
the HDD (with same type and manufacturer) and re-install the OS. The Bat!
now is very slow - even on a completely fresh install of Windows XP.
It constantly locks up the PC requiring a soft restart.

I'm using Windows XP Pro SP1 with all patches up to date. Have 512Mb
RAM, 1.33 MHz AMD processor and The Bat! v1.62r. Am running Zone
Alarm Pro v3.7.159 in the background with Kasperky v4 anti-virus. Have tried
disabling both these to see if it makes a difference but still very
slow and lock ups still happen.

I have a 1Mb broadband connection to my mail servers and 4 different
  accounts set up.

Can anybody help with a possible reason for the locks ups and
  slowness please?

I would recommend switching to Kerio Personal Firewall and AntiVir

Have you applied the (old) 811493 security patch to XP? If so, you may want
to remove it (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;819634).
