[Texascavers] Fw: NSS 2021 Convention - California!

2021-01-25 Thread C Tiderman

Hey cavers -

If you're curious about this year's NSS Convention, please read this and share
with your grottos. It contains information you need to know...

This information is also available on our website at http://nss2021.caves.org

It's definitely been a long year of playing "what if", and we're not out of
this pile of breakdown yet. But, for now, there appears to be light at the end
of the passage.

As of today, here's where things stand...

Every 4 years, the International Union of Speleology (UIS) hosts an
international conference on caving (the ICS). The National Speleological
Society is a member of this global organization, and as a matter of protocol,
we avoid scheduling our national conventions on the same dates as the
international congress. The UIS international event is currently set for July
26-30 in France.

The production team for this year's NSS Convention in Weed, California has been
trying to move our event to later in the summer. This would give us a bit more
time to allow the world to get back on its feet with respect to the pandemic.
Unfortunately, the only other dates our host college could offer us are the
exact same dates as the ICS conference in France.

The UIS held a meeting last Friday to discuss postponing the ICS to next year.
International travel is expected to remain complicated for some time yet, and
we're told the UIS is leaning towards postponing the ICS. While I was hoping
they would decide that question at their meeting, it was tabled until their
next meeting in March.

This leaves the 2021 NSS Convention in a strange position.

As of today, the 2021 NSS Convention is set for June 28-July 2 in Weed,
California. BUT... IF the UIS postpones the ICS congress, we plan to move the
NSS Convention to take those dates later in the summer. That extra month might
be the "magic bullet" we need to hold a safe convention in California. We're
hopeful that Covid-19 transmission rates will be controlled by the end of June,
but having an extra month would be our better choice. Only time will answer
that question.

If the UIS does not postpone, we plan to move forward with our current June
dates in Weed and make a determination in late April about the overall
feasibility of holding a live event or taking it virtual.

This is not the situation we want to be in right now. But, as you all know,
this has been a difficult time for the world in general. We're encouraged by
the fact that cavers are a tough crowd and can roll with these uncertainties.
Rest assured that scientific facts and medical realities will guide us in
resolving these questions as soon as possible. We have no intention of holding
a live event if it remains unsafe to do so, but we want to give the world every
chance to recover before making any final decisions.

I wish I could have shared better news, but we won't have solid details for a
few weeks yet. We certainly hope to welcome you to the "first convention of the
post-apocalypse" this summer in Weed, California!

Let's keep in touch.

Sincere regards,

Matt Bowers

Chair, 2021 NSS Convention

Weed, California

matt.bow...@caves.org

http://nss2021.caves.org

The decision timeline looks like this:

There are 2 scenarios here...

If the convention sticks with the June 28-July 3 dates, we will make a live vs.
virtual decision in late April.

If the convention can successfully move to July 24-31, the live vs. virtual
decision will be in late May.

Both of these decision dates will still give our caver guests almost 2 months
to make alternate plans or cancel any travel reservations.

Please visit our website for up-to-date details on our Covid-19 strategy if we
have a live event.

By Madeleine Thompson and Eric Levenson, CNN
Updated 2:30 PM ET, Sun April 28, 2019

(CNN)Five men exploring a cave in southwest Virginia have become trapped
inside, and authorities are working to get them out safely, according to Billy
Chrimes, search and rescue coordinator for the Virginia Department of Emergency
Management.
Six men entered the cave on Friday at around 7 p.m. and planned to spend an
extended amount of time exploring it, he said. One of those men emerged from
the cave Sunday morning around 2 a.m. He told authorities that the others were
having difficulty getting out, Chrimes said Sunday. The man who escaped said
that the other men were exhausted and were starting to have problems with
hypothermia, according to Chrimes. The men are not lost and aren't too far
into the cave. The cave explorers did not have a lot of extra food or water,
and Chrimes said the temperature underground is in the 50s. While that is
comfortable under normal circumstances, it can cause problems with hypothermia
when you're not active and moving. The five men still in the cave are between
the ages of 34 and 59. The one who escaped early Sunday morning was 22 years
old, according to Emergency Management Coordinator for Russell County Jess
Powers. Powers said the group was planning to camp in the cave until Sunday,
but a heavy downpour Saturday night made conditions muddy and wet and likely
contributed to their difficulties.
Rescue will take hours
Chrimes said that the rescue effort will likely take a considerable amount of
time because of the small size of the cave. In addition, rescue teams will
have to get inside, assess the situation and report back because cell phones
and radios don't work inside the cave. An extensive network of cave rescue
teams have responded, with additional teams across the East Coast that have
been put in standby in case additional assistance is required, Chrimes said.
"With cave rescue incidents this has the potential to extend to eight, to 12
hours, depending on what all is involved with getting the subjects out, and it
may even extend beyond that just depending on the circumstances," Chrimes said.
"Certainly we're hoping for the best and that we can get them warmed up, get
them moving, get them some energy back and get them out under their own power,
but we're still waiting to see what that situation will entail." Tony Smith,
who owns a cattle ranch next to the caves, told CNN affiliate WJHL there are
five big caves stretching for around nine miles below ground. The cave where
the men are trapped is known as "Cyclops Cave" and is popular with explorers,
though it is on private property. The cave has a "bubble-like formation"
inside known as the "eye" of the Cyclops, in which the group was planning to
camp, Powers said.___

Hey, that's right next door to me, David! I'd give the reporter an B- for the
article, mostly because 6 of the 10 photos were of their lunch, as was much of
thepiece. But the description of the nation's oldest commercial cave was better
thanaverage, which isn't saying much; we see some pretty hideous ones...
Especiallyfrom flat-lander types like those Richmond folks. I doubt that it was
directorGarrison who misspelled 'stalagtite' and 'stalacmite,' and he certainly
wouldn'tdescribe the cave as 'gigantic.' George Washington surveyed nearby
FountainCave on the property, and left his signature on the wall.
We locals are happy that the town of Grottoes has taken over management ofthe
cave from the state, which wasn't doing much for it. Virginia Region cavershave
an annual event there to help maintain the cave and the property.

It is easier to blame the cavers than accept that we are not able to control a
natural process.
The decon mandate makes it look like we are doing something and gives some
folks the warm fuzzies.
Cleaning gear should be a normal process, kinda nice not dealing with the end
result of wet muddy gear that was stuffed in a plastic bag and left there for a
few weeks. Carol

 Folks,
While I think that cleaning gear is a great idea for a lot of reasons, it was
very interesting to listen to Dr. Tuttle’s Keynote presentation on WNS and bats
at the NSS Convention Friday Banquet. To paraphrase him, Deconning of equipment
will do no good in preventing the spread of WNS. There has been no documented
case of the transmittal of WNS by cavers and bats are doing a great job
already. WNS will spread across the continent, killing an untold number of
bats, and there is nothing that cavers can do about it.    Any thought out

I know a lot of cavers that would like to find a better job.
Here is an idea for a group of cavers to start their very ownenterprise, and
get rich.  ( and use the $$ to buy a cave, or go cavingin China ).
Let tourist pay $$$ to stand on the edge of an airport runway ( as jet-planes
are coming in ),
and get blasted off on to a soft foam wall wearing velcro-suits.

All you would need are some helmets, goggles, a few velcro-suits anda foldable
portable wall.
Eventually, you could build an "I-Fly" like room, but mounted sideways,or build
some kind of giant sling-shot.

stir-crazy bored out of my mind )
P.S.
The mechanic is pulling my old motor out of my Sequoia this afternoon, but he
still has no idea what killed it.     Says it most likely a blown headgasket,
or maybe timing chain slipped off or broke, both, or more.I have a VIN on the
new motor, but not sure if I can get a history of thatwithout spending $.    I
should have a free auto-check leftover, if I can rememberwhere I put the info
from the spring of 2016.

Wm,   I am ashamed of you by trying to change the topic to “we’re so poor”.
This is a Convention budgeting issue, not an NSS dictating issue  … and
especially after the BOG voted at the March meeting that NSS Conventions must
budget for a profit.   The people at the Conventions are the movers and shakers
of the NSS.  These are the very people who have made caves and the NSS their
lives.  These are the people, who, after donating hundreds of hours each year,
and many, many dollars, want to enjoy talking with their friends.   Everyone.
Let’s make this clearer.  The NSS is not poor and this is our national
Convention.  Go to the just published Secretary-Treasurer report at
https://caves.org/nss-business /reports/1706/S-T-1706.pdf  Go to Attachment A
which has all of the National Speleological Foundation (NSF) funds.   We have
an Account Balance with the NSF of $3,157,393.52 (as of 3/31/2017).  That’s up
$63,000 dollars over 3/2016, and this is after $80,000 was taken out of the NSS
Endowment Fund.   The first time I ever heard of law enforcement being called
for a fight at a Convention was 2011.  To bring this up as a reason is truly
offensive.   The main point is mandating to Convention staffs is yet another
reason why our NSS membership is going down.  Caving and Conventions were fun
when we started caving. A BOG member needs to amend the motion to remove the
sentence “No other alcoholic beverages will be provided.“  A non-second to the
motion would be better.   I am not on the Texas Cavers list.  Could someone
please forward this response to them?     Thanks,   Ray Keeler rckee...@cox.net

Ray, Ernie, & everyone (including Texas Cavers, since I see RD forwarded it
there),   Ernie is correct – the beer budget alone would have been enough to
put several conventions in the black (instead of the red). That said, I’m not
opposed to beer (even though I don’t drink it myself).   The questions are: -
When is it “enough”? Should we just 30-35 kegs (more than OTR purchases,
and that is designated a “party event”, yet what was being budgeted for in an
upcoming convention) and have it every night? I believe most would say “no, a
couple of nights is more than sufficient”. -  When a fight breaks out,
and it has several times (to the point of the police being called), are we
responsible since we served it? Different laws in different
states/municipalities/campuses make this a nightmare to avoid. -  The
main point I have below is not that the NSS wants to ban beer (we don’t), but
that we will limit it to the alcoholic beverages listed. There is a trend
coming that wants to serve “hard liquor”, and the entire EC of the NSS is
opposed to this. Just as we don’t object to the NSS buying beer & wine, we do
object when it comes down to liquor with much higher alcohol content. I’ll buy
my own, thank you. -  The cost of beer alone in a proposed Convention
budget is $7,510. This does not include wine at the NSS Awards Banquet, which
is another $2,475, for a total of $9,985. This amount has easily broken
Convention’s budgets all

Carol,
Thank you very much for that tip.   I was going to take the headlamp back for a
refund.   I don't know how I overlooked that slider focus adjustment.
I will test the light pattern again tonight, but a brief test in daylight, the
light pattern still appeared to be annoying except in the flood position.
It looks like it is best to put some sealant ( under the sliding mechanism )
and just push it all the way in permanently.
On a lighter note,
If I do not take it back for a refund, and if I make it to Rio Rancho, then it
will get sold at the silent auction for about $ 10.
My only option at the moment is to drive non-stop to the Howdy Party and turn
around and drive back to Houston on Tuesday or Wednesday.   Does that sound
familiar ??

I have stepped thru some kind of time-dimensional portal where everything and
everyone around me in my close circles of work and family are totally
incompetent and dragging me down like a cruise-ship anchor attached to a canoe
on the ocean.
The remedy is to just say to yourself "f*** it," and rush to the store and
purchase a new LED headlamp.
So I am now testing the Sure Bilt TE057-4AA.   Advertising 500 lumens with a
dimmer setting.    I would recommend this for a backpacking trip, and some of
the medium-size dry caves in Texas.
The battery pack is not even water-resistant, but is very easy to clean.   Some
duct-tape might make it water-resistant.
The light pattern is not really adjustable.   It is ideal for small walking
size passage only.
But it is readily available at AutoZone for $ 30 plus tax.
With 4 AA batteries, it may be the best headlamp under $ 33.

Turkey, the area bridging Asia and Europe, has a long and amazing history. It
has seen wars, peace, swelling empires, and crumbling governments.
One chapter from its long history was the creation of “cave cities”. For many
years, people actually dug their homes underground. Entire cities were formed
that branched off to create a sprawling underground civilization. This wasn't
just one city, or even just a few in an area, this is hundreds if not thousands
of cities that thrived underground. The numbers of these ancient cities were so
numerous that more cities are still being discovered to this day.

In this webinar Trevor Parker will take you to Turkey on a trip through the
country experiencing culture, history, geology, and exploring several of these
cities.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information
about joining the webinar.

2016-07-14 Thread C Tiderman via Texascavers
Ever convention is different. I have been to ones that are better than others,
but I have never been to a bad convention.
The town is happy we are coming, unlike big towns that don't even notice we are
there.
What make a convention great is seeing old friends and making new ones.
FYI the TS play on Thursday after the photo salon.

Unfortunately it seems the organizers of this convention don't seem to

wonders whether they have ever been to one before. For example, they
scheduled a band other than the Terminal Syphons to play at the

The funny thing about Don's post, is I consider him one of my best friends,
which gives you an idea how many friends I have.
The solution to Don's predicament is for me to simply change my email name.
Surely you can see I have drastically cut back on the use of CaveTex, but that
is mostly because I have been swamped doing things indirectly related to caving.

Today, I found an awesome water-color painting of Luray Caverns in an antique
store near Houston.
   https://www.dropbox.com/s/pedrm248j11sqg4/Luray-Caverns.jpg?dl=0
Anybody know the history of this?   I have not found out if it is just a print,
or an original water-color, but assuming just one of a print of thousands.

I think most of the cavers who were dissing me last year, are now over it, and
we are still friends.  To the best of my knowledge only one caver is on my
sh*t-list, and nobody I know has heard from him in years.  I would still go in
a non-vertical cave with him though.  I am pretty sure everybody else accepted
my olive-branch, and all the bad vibes are fuzzy memories from the past.

I am still digging thru booty, a retired caver gave me, and found a pair of
grey Jumars.  These will hopefully end up as a door-prize at a caving event, in
the near future.
Respectfully,
David Locklear

[SWR] Fw: Potential Listing of Tri-Colored Bats as endangered, and the possible ramifications

Subject: Potential Listing of Tri-Colored Bats as endangered, and the possible
ramifications

There has been concern raised about the potential federal  listing of
the Tri-Colored Bat (TCB) as threatened or endangered and the perceived
ramifications of that should it occur. Cavers, in my opinion, should not
panic, not should they ignore, this possibility, which is sought by the
Center for Biological Diversity (CBD).

First, we need to recognize that the TCB has been hit very hard by White
Nose Syndrome (WNS). As responsible cavers, we should care about this.
If you are not a responsible caver, go ahead and panic now. The fear is
that if the TCBs are recognized as endangered, that all caves will be
closed, a stated goal of CBD. There are many reasons this will not
happen, even if the species is listed as endangered. First, and this is
part of why the first attempt at listing the species failed, it is not
known how many there actually are, because counts have not been
uniformly conducted for the species, except as incidental to counts for
other threatened or endangered species. The species is believed to be
ubiquitous, and it is not known what percentage of the total population
has been affected. It is only known that where WNS has been observed and
mortality has been documented, the species has been hard hit. Second, it
will not be possible to gate all caves where the species may now or
might once have been present. Many of these caves are on private
property. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife would be hard pressed to pursue
court action against that many landowners, and since they do not know
which caves are preferred by TCBs, they will not know which ones
should be a priority. They will rely on responsible cavers to help them
find out where their priorities should be, both on private and on public
lands. And once that is established, they will rely on responsible
cavers to assist them in monitoring compliance with any closures that
occur. At least, that will be the case if we work with the agencies
instead of giving them the usual knee jerk whine of don't close my
favorite cave. That only works against us in the long run. Lastly, to
justify a closing, it will need to be demonstrated that the species is
currently residing in the cave. Cavers will be needed to assist in
making that determination. They will not be able to justify closing a
cave in the hope that bats they do not know might have been there
might return. Fish and Wildlife will not support such action, even with
threats from the CBD, because the law simply won't support it, and the
government can't afford it.

The agencies are not really anxious to close the caves, and look to the
caving community for assistance. When they do close caves in general, it
is because they do not perceive any alternative. Let's try to provide
those alternatives in a responsible manner.

Commercial caves could use this product to coat signs and plaques in caves.
And around utility rooms in caves, such as doors, doorknobs, railing, shelves,
Underground equipment such as elevators. kitchens, tables.
And on the man-made walls of tunnels.
Maybe cavers could coat their helmets with it ?  or the inside of their
pee-bottle.  Or for expeditions, on their tarp.
Depending on the coating's flexibility, it might be good for coating rain-flys
and nylon panchos, inflatable beds.
Other uses,
Better shower-caps ?  Coating tombstones, toilet seats ?   Ceilings above a
shower stalll.   Rain-gutters.
Depending on the products sunlight exposure resistance.
, it could be used for outdoor stuff like playgrounds, boats, bleacher-seats,
and thousands more.

slide collections (you remember slides), I have pictures. When I finally
retire, just like a lot of the other people I caved with I'm going to scan
my slides (if they don't come up with something better by then).

Periodically (about the time they hit the floor) the Park Service goes in there

Based on historical records, I think there must have been a typo made in the
press release. That one line should perhaps read: ...Matt Bowers predicts,
“a higher than average *precipitation* due to the 75th anniversary of the
 society in 2016.”

Precipitation, participation. Easy to get mixed up. Either way, I'm looking
forward to helping out a dry community in 2016.

Are you actually familiar with the situation?  Have you been there when it is

If someone has a solution, I'd be happy to hear it.  As a local resident,

If there is one.  I know just putting up the typical bat-friendly gate over the

Beck Ranch Cave Update

In 1999, the Texas Cave Conservancy entered into a cave management
agreement with the Brushy Creek Municipal Utility District.  This  is one
of the few caves under TCC management that does not have a cave gate.  The
cave entrance was not gated in order for the bats to be able to enter and
exit the cave.   A high quality nine- foot tall iron fence was build  to
attempt to control access.  Local teenagers were using it for a party
cave. The fence allowed us to greatly reduce the party traffic so we could
protect the cave.

Today, locals continue to trespass and go into the cave.
Texas cavers are going in without permission as well.  Both the locals and
the cavers have been confronted by law enforcement and issued citations
for trespassing.  In addition, the TCC has not been able to prevent the
authorized caver groups from creating problems such as changing cloths in
the parking lot of a public park.  Cavers in their underwear, and less,
have made it difficult to keep cave open.

As a result, all authorized trips will be for cave management
activities such as cave clean up, the bi-annual monitoring, fire ant
control and inspection, etc. These trips will be set up by the Texas Cave
Conservancy.  We will host an annual cave clean up and restoration visit.
The next clean up day will be Saturday -February 23, 2013. If you are
interested in assisting us in conducting the cave management activities,
send us your name in an e-mail to tcc-ca...@austin.rr.com    We will place
you on the list and contact you prior to our work project.

Further, the TCC would like to make it very clear to Texas
cavers that steps have been taken to alert law enforcement

DD and all,

Sounds like all the more reason to have
the next one in Oregon. This year it's in the hi 70s to mid 80s. We had rain
over the weekend and it's in the 50s at nite. Not every year, mind you, but
this year. Of course the first of July, it goes to 90 and higher until the
end
of fire season (some time in Aug or Sep).

Isn't the NSS slogan:
Be prepared, but have fun! ? Sounds like an interesting time was had by

It is still my goal to rotate the sites, but the BOG has the final say (as you
saw this year).

The biggest problem with the rotation is finding hosts. I still hope we can
have a convention in Flagstaff one day. It was a good site, I just need people
the region will accept to be the host group.

Seeing different parts of the country, I have not been to before, is one of the
pluses to going to convention.

Whoop de doo! Ely is close (or at least closer than all the others). I worked
there for almost 10 years. Love the area. Good excuse to go back!

Actually, I have to disagree with the board. East and west are only relative
if you have money or don't have to travel 2000 miles. Used to be the
convention would be on one side of the country one year; mid-country the next
year; and the other side of the country the next year. I thought that was a
good plan. You could generally make it to one or two in a 3-year period. Now,
with the price of gas...

Thanks for the info.

? Sounds like an interesting time was had by
  all.

I worked

Hi NSS Members,

The 2012 NSS Members Manual will be
published in April, which means we will be taking the “snapshot” of the
membership database THIS FRIDAY! Yes, that means February 24, 2012.

If your information is incorrect, please go to
https://secure.caves.org/nssapps/changeinfo.shtml and update your information.
It is your responsibility to keep this current.
If, by chance, someone in your grotto does not have e‑mail access, he or she
can call the NSS Office at 256-852-1300.

Remember, too, that this year we are voting electronically
for Directors on the Board of Governors, so please be sure your information
includes a valid e‑mail address. While
you can still ask for a paper ballot to be mailed, we’re doing this to save the
Society money.

To sum up, check today whether your information in the NSS
database is correct, current, and includes a valid e‑mail address. If you don’t
do this before Friday, your information will be wrong in the printed Members
Manual. And then how would your
friends find you?

If you are not an NSS member, now would be a great time to
join—you’ll get into the next issue of the Members
Manual!

Thanks,
Meredith Hall Weberg
2012 NSS Members Manual Editor

Please forward to caver, grotto, and region listservs. Thanks!

This is sad news indeed. I had the privilege of hearing them speak on some of
their work in Jewel. It was amazing all that they accomplished. My thoughts go
out to Jan in this difficult time.

Herb Conn passed away Wednesday night at the Conn Cave (their home), outside of
Custer, SD.  He was 91 and has been in declining health for some time. Jan's
asked that she not be contacted for several days while she adjusts to the huge
change in her life.  There are good friends nearby to help her with any needs.
At his request, there will be no services.

[SWR] Fw: [MAR-NSS] 2011 NSS Members Manual--Photos Needed NOW Please

2012-01-29 Thread C Tiderman

I need photos!!

Thanks,

2011 NSS Members Manual--Photos Needed NOW Please
by merecaver » Sun Jan 29, 2012 5:15 pm
Hi NSS,

Apparently I only thought I
posted this to Cavechat, but did not in reality. The request was in the
December (and I think January) NSS News, though. I need photos taken by NSS
members for the front and back covers. The deadline is Tuesday, January 31,
2012, but I'll probably let that slide a bit.

Please
send no more than FIVE high-quality, vertically oriented, cave-related
photographs for possible use on the cover or back cover of the 2012 NSS Members
Manual. Send a small-sized photo first and be prepared to send a
high-resolution version if asked.

Send photos to me at mereca...@yahoo.com with the subject line: 2012 NSS
MM--Cover Photo Submission--xxx (xxx=your name).

Also,
if you have not updated your information in the NSS database and things
have changed, fix it now! We should be taking the snapshot of the
database for the Members Manual in the next few weeks. You can update your own
info and should (!) at https://secure.caves.org/nssapps/changeinfo.shtml.

Thanks,

2011-10-26 Thread C Tiderman

Culprit behind bat scourge confirmed
A cold-loving fungus is behind an epidemic decimating bat populations in North
America.
Susan Young
White-nose syndrome is killing bats throughout eastern North America.Greg
Turner / Pennsylvania Game Commission
Researchers have confirmed that a recently identified fungus is responsible for
white-nose syndrome, a deadly disease that is sweeping through bat
colonies in eastern North America.
The fungus, Geomyces destructans, infects
the skin of hibernating bats, causing lesions on the animals' wings and a
fluffy white outgrowth on the muzzle. When white-nose syndrome takes
hold of a hibernating colony, more than 90% of the bats can die (see Disease
epidemic killing only US bats). The disease was first documented in February
2006 in a cave in New
York, and has spread to at least 16 other US states and four Canadian
provinces.
The culpability of G. destructans for this
sudden outbreak was thrown into question when the fungus was found on
healthy bats in Europe, where it is not associated with the grim
mortality levels seen in North America1. Some proposed that the fungus was not
the primary cause of the
catastrophic die offs, and that another factor — such as an undetected
virus — must be to blame. But a study published today in Nature2 reveals that
G. destructans is indeed guilty.
The fungus alone is sufficient to recreate all the pathology
diagnostic for the disease, says David Blehert, a microbiologist at the
National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wisconsin, and senior
author on the report.
Bat-to-bat spread
Blehert and his colleagues collected healthy little brown bats (Myotis
lucifugus) from Wisconsin, which is well beyond the known range of white-nose
syndrome. They infected the bats by direct administration of G. destructans
spores to the skin or by contact with infected bats from New York. By
the end of the 102-day experiment, the tell-tale white fungus was
growing on the muzzles and wings of all of the directly infected
Wisconsin bats and 16 of the 18 exposed to sick bats.
This is the first experimental evidence that white-nose syndrome can be passed
from bat to bat, and is very worrying from a conservation
point of view because bats huddle together in large numbers in caves and mate
in large swarms, says Emma Teeling, a bat biologist at University
College Dublin in Ireland. If a bat has this fungus on them, it's going to
spread quickly throughout the population, says Teeling, who was not involved
with the study. It's like a perfect storm.
The infected Wisconsin bats did not die during the experiment, which may be due
to the limited timeline of infection, the authors suggest.
Although the study does not directly show that a healthy bat will die
from infection with G. destructans, the results
did show that the fungus alone was sufficient to cause lesions
diagnostic of white-nose syndrome to form on previously healthy bats,
indicating that the fungus is the cause of the deaths so often
associated with white-nose syndrome in the wild.

[SWR] NSS Office

2011-04-13 Thread C Tiderman
Hi All,

Maybe you do not care where the office is located. That's fine.

Do you care if the NSS incurs an immediate multi million dollar debt -
buying an existing building that will need to be retrofit to meet the needs
of the office - or takes it slow - buying land, raising funds and waiting
to build until at least 75% of the funds needed have been raised?

If you have a preference, please let the BOG know what you think. Send a
note to b...@caves.org

Thanks

Please do not hesitate to contact them (and me) and let us know how you feel.
We're coming up on the next BOG Meeting the first weekend in

The NSS President is elected at the Spring Board of Governors meeting and takes
office at the NSS National Convention.  From the time of the election and until
the convention the President-elect also serves as the President Pro Tem if not
already serving in another officer position.  The President of the NSS is a
member of the Executive Committee. The President has responsibility for
managing
the Society's business; fund raising; membership retention; public outreach;
liaison with government, international organizations and other organizations
with goals that overlap those of the Society; and as the Society's point person
for the members and for the public. The President is responsible for the agenda
for and conducting the meetings of the Board of Governors and the Executive
Committee.   The Secretary to the Board, the Recording Secretary, and the By

Director Elections) Committees are within the President's Department. The
President oversees the Fund Raising and Public Relations committees of the
Society. The liaison with outside organizations is handled through the
Government, Show Caves, and The Nature Conservancy committees within the
President's Department. The President is also responsible the managing any
other
permanent and ad hoc committees assigned to the President's department by the
Board of Governors. The President also communicates to the membership through
periodic columns in the NSS NEWS. Finally, the President works with other
