[Texascavers] Gorman Falls at Colorado Bend State Park

2018-01-03 Thread Heather Tucek via Texascavers
Since it only happens very occasionally, we figured we hike down to Gorman
Falls yesterday morning (1/2/18) while it was snowing, and check out the
frozen state of the waterfall. I know lots of y'all have attended the TSA's
Colorado Bend State Park survey project, so you have a special spot in your
heart for Gorman Falls. No pictures of caves, but a spectacular view of
what it looks like when it freezes over.

Note, at the end of the video, the camera isn't steady anymore.. we were
too cold to stand still!

Re: [Texascavers] Cave Assistance number for Bexar County

2016-10-28 Thread Heather Tucek via Texascavers
The outdated-ness of this list was addressed at the meeting at TCR. I'm talking
with a local caver/firefighter about being the safety chair, and updating that
list.
I do know that John Kreidler does not want to be a contact anymore, and that DJ
Walker is indeed still the South Central Regional Coordinator for the NCRC.

Re: [Texascavers] REI wild caving trip in Statesman

2016-10-24 Thread Heather Tucek via Texascavers
Nichols Outdoor Adventures doesn't offer a rappelling tour, since our insurance
doesn't cover ropes.

Also, it was our understanding that they were doing a one time trip with the
previous superintendent. We had no clue that they were making this a recurring
event, and it will be interesting to see how this works out, since we use that
cave too.

Wow Jerry. Thanks for being yet another hateful caver "family member" who has
nothing nice to say, yet can't keep their mouth shut, who never offers positive
criticism or maybe an offer to help those who need assistance with something
they are new at doing. Sorry that so many people worked their butts off aside
from their normal jobs and families to get a publication out that people have
been griping about not getting, but not helping to produce, just to make you
focus on spelling errors and publication inconsistencies that most people don't
know about (yet don't get help finding).

Man, I'm so glad to be a part of this group.

[Texascavers] Winter TSA Meeting!

2016-01-04 Thread Heather Tucek via Texascavers
We will be holding the TSA Winter Business Meeting on this coming Sunday,
January 10, 2016.

Since this weekend is also the fourth Colorado Bend State Park TSA project
weekend of the season (January 8-10), we will be setting up camp at the
CBSP Conference Center (house above the waterfall) instead of at Caver
Camp.
Will and Kris will be arriving at about 9:30pm Friday and adding the TSA
lock into the gate. If you arrive before the Project Weekend Coordinators
and do not already have access you will need to wait for someone who does
or email ahead of time to arrange something.

The combo to this BLUE TSA lock is 2-2-8-7. Always leave gate locks EXACTLY
as you found them.
You may sleep inside on a bunk bed or bring a tent and camp on the lawn.
Bunks will be first come first serve, so if you plan to get in late, make
sure you prepare accordingly.

There will be group meals. It will be lots of fun. Give the project details
a read at http://www.cavetexas.org/projects/cbsp.html.

GROUP MEAL: email Kris at kapkanga...@gmail.com to be counted in. How many
people and what days and what you can't eat.

 Hello Cavers!

I'm excited to give y'all a quick update, and ask for help from my caving
 community again.

After finishing up some insurance drama, and getting confident
underground again after my accident 2 years ago, I've move to Louisiana and
will be starting a new job in just a couple of weeks!

As a confidence building exercise (plus it's something I really want to
do) i'll be traveling to costa Rica this Saturday, and returning next
Friday. This will be my first time traveling solo internationally, and
there's a little anxiety from the parental units and boyfriend.

I am relishing the opportunity to travel alone and spread my wings a
little bit, after everything that's going on in my life for over two years,
but I do want to make everyone in my life feel a little more comfortable
with this decision. My question is, are there any members of our caving
community living in Costa Rica at the moment? I know there are quite a few
Texas Cavers in Mexico. Again, everything has been thoroughly planned, but
it would be nice to know there is someone local to reach out to, in event
 of an emergency.

 Thanks everyone!

I had a couple of people approach me about drones and caving this
weekend at the TSA convention. I did not get names from people, and
anytime there is alcohol involved, I'm not going to remember who.

If you are interested in drone flying and more specifically if you
have a trip or project that can benefit from me assisting with my
drone, contact me off-list. I'll gladly assist as I can for any
 projects.

Where I can see the drone helping is with ridge walking, checking out
high leads in caves (that have enough room for the drone to maneuver)
and also checking out leads on cliff faces. It can potentially be
used to check out pits before dropping into one, depending on the
 size/nature of the pit.

While it does pretty good in wind, that's a factor that has to be
taken into account, as well as obstacles. We'll also have to keep it
away from any bats, since it's a bit noisy and we don't want to
disturb them. It might be useful in scaring off other varmits to move
them away from an entrance (snakes, etc).

If there are any issues with the set up this year, you are welcome to come
discuss it with me in person, at Registration, during office hours. :)

Is there someone in Texas with a consulting firm or university who does

Re: [Texascavers] Alcalde Article

2015-01-19 Thread Heather Tucek via Texascavers
Here's the editor's most recent email to me:

Dear Heather,

I have made the changes you noted, and I have added a prominent note up top
regarding the salamanders. Allow me to please apologize for the mistakes in
this article, and let me thank you for bringing them to our attention. We
have brought these inaccuracies to the reporter's attention, and he will be
getting a stern talking-to about checking his facts carefully. We take this
very seriously, and I regret that we let these errors make it through our
process.

Would you be so good as to check my changes to make sure we are fully in
the clear? http://alcalde.texasexes.org/2014/12/notes-from-the-underground/

Thank you again for reaching out to me. I hope this corrects the mistakes
and avoids any kind of complication for you professionally. If there is any
way I can be helpful to you in the future, please let me know.

Apologetically yours,

I don't have a lot of sympathy for the sort of reporters who will write for
publication about things they know nothing about, which puts them beneath
contempt. But there are good reporters and bad ones. A good one will record
interviews and at least get the quotes right. My guess is that the guy who
wrote that article is an amateur doing freelance work for a not particularly
prestigious publication. A writer for a magazine should be held to higher
standards than a newspaper reporter, because he doesn't have as tight
deadlines. And at a decent magazine (of which there are very few), the staff
would have checked the facts in the article. The writer is obviously an
idiot, but the magazine is obviously worthless. Of course, one rather expects
that of an alumni magazine, the sole purpose of which is to arrive
periodically to remind the alumni, most of whom are probably illiterate and
don't read it, to be generous.

One of my fantasies is to somehow become newsworthy and have the opportunity
to tell a reporter who is asking stupid or nosey (of course) questions to
fuck off. Unfortunately live interviews are broadcast with delays. -- Mixon

I like the third weekend. PC is my favourite spot. At least on the
registration side of things, we have a fantastic little hutch that we can
lock papers etc. right at the entrance, and wouldn't have to station
outside a bathroom like we did last year.
The issue that I see with moving it to the 2nd weekend (like last year), is
that the second weekend has always been the Colorado Bend State Park work
project. We keep it consistent with them, and although they are amazingly
accommodating at the park, we don't want to piss off the rangers by being a
hassle to have there...

Thanks again for all the hard work you do to make TCR a success. (And
thanks also to Allan, Andy, Gill and other past organizers).
I love Paradise Canyon--with or without water-- even though it will be
more difficult to land the helicopter there. 2nd choice would be Flat
Creek, followed by last year's site. But any spot, preferably with water
and privacy west of the Balcones Fault, with enough cavers in attendance
 will be just fine.

killer. It's an option for TSA, TCMA and TCR.
How do y'all feel about this site?

Next is the date. There have been several traditional weekends and many
suggestions etc. I've penciled in the weekend of October 15-18 as a target
 date.
How do y'all feel about that?

[Texascavers] Austin Caverns

2014-12-05 Thread Heather Tucek via Texascavers
The City of Austin - Watershed Cave Team is trying to put together a report
about Austin Caverns, and we'd like some input from cavers who've actually
been in there! Big questions are: Is the north part horizontal, how high
are the ceilings, etc.. Also are there cavers interested in an effort to
preserve the cave if lots to the entrance were acquired? Is this cave worth
messing with or is it too unstable?
But really, any information we can get from people who've actually been in
the cave, would be super helpful. If we can get the report sent in on time,
we have a good shot at getting permission to work on the cave, which means
volunteer opportunities for you, yes YOU! to come and be instrumental in
getting Austin Caverns back open!

Please contact me off-list if you have been to the cave and can lend some
insight!

Re: [Texascavers] The Texas Caver

2014-07-31 Thread Heather Tucek via Texascavers
We can't print without people's permission. The problem is, people will put
quips on Facebook or whatever, and then when we ask to print it, they say
Oh, I'll send you a better one for the Caver, and then they never do.

If we want an editor that swims around all the forums and emails and mucks
through all the internet banality just to find that tiny little trip report
in amongst all the crap, we need to pay them a living wage. It takes a lot
of time to go through all the postings everywhere, and when you are a
volunteer, there's just no time for that.

And then use spell check . . .

TSA and the Caver have always cycled; not gone under. Sometimes people
write, and other times cave. Pay attention and devote some time to the
other side of the fence. IF it went digital it could collect the now LARGE
numbers of videos on people’s phones, ask for voice-over narratives.

what? Worth it.

The Texas Caver has just been sent off to the printer. This is the May
issue of the Texas Caver. Why is it almost August and the May issue is only
finally being printed? Why, it's because no Texas Cavers actually send in
trip reports to be published! We can't make a newsletter/magazine if
there's nothing to put in it.

I know LOTS of you have gone on a number of Texas caving trips in the past
couple of months. I know LOTS of you went on plenty of AMAZING TAG trips
this month. Why is no one sending in articles? Jill spends an exorbitant
amount of her personal volunteer time making the layout, editing, adding
photos, etc. All the things needed to make the Texas Caver a great
publication. We won one award at the Publication Salon at the NSS
Convention. ONE. How many did other organizations win? You know why?
Because they actually have stuff to publish

There's an article about Texas Caving in the most recent NSS News. Why? Why
isn't that article in the Texas Caver? Just because it goes in the national
magazine doesn't mean it can't also go in the local magazine. If you're
going to put one together for NSS, go ahead and copy Jill on your email!
(I've seen this a number of times, not just this month).

Bottom line is, if you want to see your Texas Caver magazine in the mail
anymore, you need to man up, be a part of the answer instead of the
problem, and start sending in your trip reports and photos. If you don't
want to publish something because you think you can't write, have someone
copyedit it for you first. I'll be happy to go through and fix spelling and
grammatical errors, as long as you SEND SOMETHING IN!!

TL;DR
Start sending articles and photos to the Texas Caver or I will camp on your
front doorstep until you write something down. I know who you are.

/end rant

Maybe we can move the Texas Caver magazine to Facebook ... just saying

 Agreed, Mimi.

When I was the Editor, I was dismayed (and somewhat confused) by the
fact that folks didn't realize that their article could be printed in BOTH
 publications.

Not all TSA members are NNS members and vice versa.

Since these are the dog days of summer and caving in the state, this
may be a good time to talk about the state of the TC and the TSA.

Personally, I'm worried about a long and slow death of the TSA, mainly
due to apathy and social networking.

 Hopefully, I'm wrong.

 Y'all's thoughts?

How utterly sad - and totally disheartening - to finally see something
on paper about caving in Texas this year in the NSS News, rather than in a
Texas Caver. Something very wrong somewhere.
