well probably its the same length as it ever was. unless the act of surveying
lengthens a cave. interesting idea,

Hi Dwight - thanks for the wonderful letter about Jan Conn. what a wonderful
role model and words to live by:
“If life consisted only of what we planned it could get pretty dull. It’s the
unexpected that gives life it’s punch. Who would go caving if we already knew
what was around the next turn?”

wonder what her contribution to name a group of cavers would be?

Re: [Texascavers] cave on ranch near leakey

2020-02-02 Thread Nancy Weaver
thanks Andy. Jill told me that the cave was being privately explored and that
it was purportedly "3 miles long and going” which made me think, if true, that
cavers would know about it. She was on the ranch studying golden cheek
warblers as there was habitat.
I’m highly dubious of most claims of 3 mile long caves by ranchers as they
often turn out to be one large room
But you never know .. . .

[Texascavers] adios redux

2019-09-30 Thread Nancy Weaver
turns out one needs to unsubscribe twice to make it happen so in the meantime,
am pleasantly surprised by a couple supportive posts.
what if we return this post to a caver campfire? I’m sick to death of
squabbling and caver topic police who never have anything of interest to post
but are quick to slam ‘unauthorized' posts.
keep it private to cavers and give people one chance to learn to be civil, then
toss them out.
maybe then long term cavers would come back and we might all have conversations
about whatever is of interest to us.
in 80’s and 90’s caver conversation ranged all over the world, included
interesting ideas, inventions, and practical jokes. and it was generally
generous, not hateful.
and for god’s sake, if you don’t care for what someone posts, ignore it.
this is not to slight the creator and maintainer of this forum, just to say
maybe its time to change the way its done.

[Texascavers] Ernie

2019-08-16 Thread Nancy Weaver
Ernie's Last Wishes were to be buried at sea. Since we couldnt find anyone to
do that, he opted for cremation. That has been set in motion and I'll be able
to pick up his ashes in a couple weeks. He never specifically talked about a
memorial, but we all know how much he loved a party. and music. I think it
would be nice to celebrate his life at TCR where many of his friends can gather
and tell Ernie stories. I do not plan to organize anything more. If someone
else would like to, they are welcome. If anyone would like to scatter some of
his ashes in his many favorite places in the world, we can arrange that as well.

oh this picture reminds me of another story.
William would come over and visit after a dig and I would generally insist we
sit outside. He told me that Cindy Spence (hope I’ve got that right) John
Spence’s wife, would hose him down before she let him in the house.
and then there was the time he and some other diggers went out for food at an
all night dive. The waitress could barely deal with the encrusted mud, but was
silent until they paid. Then she yelped “even their money is dirty”
good times

[Texascavers] Bill Russell

2019-03-12 Thread Nancy Weaver
I was lucky enough to have Terry Raines and Bill Russell as my caving mentors
in the late 70’s early 80’s. Between them I was turned onto the glories of
Mexico and the thrill of exploring the huge ranches that are now south Austin
after work.
Bill was a great one for digging and crawlways and I learned to be a fan of
tight spaces and buckets of rocks. He was always up for something new; one
night we decided to leave the cave without any lights on, a tactile experience
I’ve never forgotten.
William was also an excellent behind the scenes friend, in time of sickness or
need.
Besides his passion for caving, it was always very clear how much Katie meant
to William.
He’s a lucky man to have gotten to live doing what he loved, surrounded by
people he loved.
Whatever comes next I can see William enthusiastically tunneling his way into
the great beyond.

2019-02-27 Thread Nancy Weaver
in my first years of Mexican caving esp on the tgiving xmas trips recall
running into odd groups of cavers from all over the US in random, cavey, towns.
It felt like the whole country was a vast playground for cavers.
and in 1965 on a family vacation at Hotel Taninul, which had a very guano odor
cave nightclub, I remember meeting another junior high kid named Blake Harrison.

[Texascavers] Ernie and hospice

2019-02-22 Thread Nancy Weaver
Ernie entered hospice last night. His nurse will be Billy Goerdt and he will
come weekly to check in. Hospice will take over all medical care so I am
cancelling further VA visits. They will send aides 2-3 times a week to take
care of physical therapy and hygiene. I am still managing a daily breakfast
and supper shift so he will have lots of eyes on him. Hospice is delivering a
hospital bed today which will make it far easier for E to get up and down. He
has been getting steadily more mobil after his most recent fall on the 8th and
was using his walker to get around yesterday. He is lucid and loves visits and
phone calls.
This feels like a huge relief for both of us. Decisions have been made and the
extra help is very much appreciated.
Please share this with any of Ernie’s friends that you know. He was part of
many circles throughout the world and I only know a few of them.

[Texascavers] Ernie update

2019-02-12 Thread Nancy Weaver
Since coming home from rehab Ernie isn’t bouncing back and has been bedridden
for the past week. He and I had a long meeting with Billy Goerdt about what
hospice can offer him. Assuming he qualifies, we will start up as soon as
possible. I’ve arranged for local help to come in most mornings, make
breakfast for him, help with meds and clean up. And Don has offered to help
most afternoons with heating up dinner. Don also set up a remote so Ernie can
watch tv.
Hopefully hospice can take most of the afternoon shifts and give Don a break.
Ernie and I also discussed the possibility of VA assisted living. I need to
visit with the VA social worker and find out what’s available.
Meanwhile, none of the doorways at Ernies are large enough for either a
wheelchair or walker, so we looking to hire some caver carpenters to come
enlarge doorways. Doesn’t have to be pretty, just safe and large. Please
contact me if you are interested in the job.
Ernie has a phone by the bed and would love to talk with friends. And visitors
are always welcome, tho you should check with me to make sure he’s not at a dr
appt at the time. If you do visit, go around to the back door which will be
unlocked, knock and open and come in. Call out so he’s expecting you.
thanks, all

[Texascavers] land for sale

2018-08-17 Thread Nancy Weaver
Ernie Garza is selling his property with a 3 year Life Estate clause.
Essentially that means that title transfers to buyer AND Ernie continues to
live there for up to 3 years or unless he moves out earlier, details
negotiable.
Property is 444 Billie Brooks Lane, Driftwood 78619, better known as Rolling
Oaks, surrounded by musicians, cavers and even a well known dig. The place is
3.91 acres with some of the largest finest oaks in the neighborhood.
The main building is a Metal Mart 24x40 foot kit, bolt anchored to a 4 inch
slab. Ceiling is 10 feet at walls 12 feet at peak. Walls and ceiling are
insulated and sheetrocked. Half the floor is 12 inch tile, the other half
painted concrete.
Attached to main building is a frame structure with kitchen, bath, bedroom.
There is no well.
A fully functional 3,000 gallon rainwater collection system with UV is plumbed
to kitchen and bathroom.
Half of the roof is guttered, full capability is easily 10,000 more gallons.

There are several outbuildings for storage and one that is set up as a
woodshop. We are starting the process of completely clearing the property of
debris, to be done before end of year.

Asking price, for sale by owner, is $170,000. Comparables for Rolling Oaks
available at https://www.realtyaustin.com/rolling-oaks.php
<https://www.realtyaustin.com/rolling-oaks.php>

Please contact Nancy Weaver off list if interested in more details and feel
free to share this post with other cavers and friends.

love this report on a fascinating woman. reminds me of my friend of an equal
age who lives in Real de Catorce now but grew up as a debutante in Mexico City
and went to parties and university with the Castro brothers, before they, too,
moved to Cuba.
here’s my offering of poetry. sadly it does not specify caves BUT it does

David at least is sharing his perspective and tales of a certain life. You,
and you know who you are, are simply showing your meanness.
Tales of Redding Grotto and if you were lucky enough to get the book version of
the caver logbook are a window into fringe and interesting times and people.
