You wouldn't begin to imagine the number of truck loads and the hours spent
on the project. We are lucky to have a mega rich rancher who has decided to
help us with his equipment. The guy modifies aircraft and has offices world
wide from Singapore to Miami but grew up in Bandera and is pretty
unassuming except for his wild ass ideas. Good guy and his foreman wants to
meet with you to talk about the 5,000 acre ranch he manages. He is a
retired large animal vet. A really sweet guy, a real gentleman which is
rare these days.

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto Holiday Party 5:30 pm, Saturday, December 15, 2018

2018-11-30 Thread Geary Schindel
Folks,

This is a reminder that the Bexar Grotto Holiday Party will be held on
Saturday, December 15, 2018 at Sue, Geary and Aspen Schindel’s house at 11310
Whisper Dawn, San Antonio, Texas. The event will start at 5:30 pm and run until
sometime later in the evening.

There will be a pot luck dinner so please bring a dish and make sure you take
it home with you. Let me add that there have been some great dishes (with food
on them) at previous parties but any contributions are appreciated. BYO
beverage if you have particular tastes,

There will also be a White Elephant gift exchange starting around 8 pm so
please bring a reasonable gift if you want to participate. Homemade gifts with
a theme or story are always appropriate. Estimated value of a gift should range
from $0 to $20.

We will also be doing a food drive for Sue’s rolling pantry that she provides
to many of her social work clients. So, dry goods, household consumables,
canned food, etc is always appreciated.

Cavers and guests are welcome to attend.

Rules:

  * We encourage and support “designated drivers” If you are not in condition
to drive home, we have couch and floor space for you – and we will insist you
stay. We’ll make breakfast for anyone spending the night;
  *   Please don’t block my neighbor’s driveways;
  *   No pets;
  * Children are welcome as long as they are supervised. Note that the house
is not kid proof.
  * If you want to get in the hot tub, bring a towel; and,
  * Last but not least, stay off the roof.

Thanks,

Geary, Sue, and Aspen

2018-05-14 Thread Geary Schindel
Folks,

Garry White, the Bexar Grotto Program Chair had a cancelation for tonight's
Bexar Grotto meeting and asked if I would make a presentation tonight.

Depending upon the interest of the group, we have three programs we can select
from.

1st The Joy of Dyeing - What We Know About Groundwater In the Edwards Aquifer
of South-Central Texas

2nd. A Primer on Caves and Karst Hydrology for the Claustrophobic (with career
recommendations for students). This was the keynote talk at the Annual South
Texas Geological Society Meeting last Wednesday.

3rd. Karst of the Balkans - A Travelogue . This is an overview of karst travels
during four trips in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro.

Hope to see you at the meeting tonight.

Re: [Texascavers] Bexar Grotto Donates $5000 to TSC

2018-01-10 Thread pstrickland1--- via Texascavers
In addition to the minor repairs On the Texas Speleological Center, I think we
should consider if we want to put wood firing strips on the concrete walls for
sheetrock. Foam insulation could be put between the strips. Sheetrocking the
ceiling would not only make the space look finished, but is recommended for
suppression of fire. If we don't do this before we fill the basement, it will
never happen.

The Bexar Grotto is also challenging other grottos around the state to
contribute and try to meet or beat their contribution.

There have been a number of offers and requests over the past week to provide
items or store materials at the new facility, and unfortunately we can’t
accommodate those at this time. While we appreciate everyone’s enthusiasm, we
still need to setup a management team for the property, help Bill Mixon sort
through and remove his items, conduct some minor repairs on the property,
determine the space needs for TSS and TCMA and figure out where everything
goes, then establish a use plan for the property so that we can both meet the
needs of cavers and provide a professional-type space for the Texas caving
organizations.

Thank you!

Re: [Texascavers] Bexar Grotto is the center of the caving universe and here's proof...

2017-08-29 Thread George Veni via Texascavers
Bexar Grotto has always been generous, which makes me proud to be a member.
Expanding that generosity to Texas cavers in general and some friends close to
San Antonio:

John Moses in El Paso is the NSS International Secretary

Patty Perlaky at Cave Without A Name is President of the National Caves
Association (US association of show caves)

Brad Wuest at Natural Bridge Caverns is President of the International Show
Caves Association.

I look forward to seeing many of you in a couple of weeks.

The grotto has a lot to be proud of.

So, what is unique about the Bexar Grotto and what are they doing, or could be
doing better to attract and retain members in the grotto and the NSS.

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto Meeting, Feb. 13 @ 7pm

2017-02-09 Thread Bennett Lee via Texascavers
Ever wondered about extraterrestrial caving? Then come join us at the next
Bexar Grotto meeting this Monday, Feb. 13, where Dr. Rene DeHon will talk about
finding and adapting natural shelters on the Moon and Mars as a first step to
protecting astronauts from the higher radiation environment on these celestial
bodies. Learn about the types of natural shelters, their origin, how to look
for them, and how to adapt them for use. (That's right! Learn how we're going
to turn astronauts into cavers!)

Dr. DeHon was funded for NASA research for over 20 years, has produced geologic
maps on the Moon, Mars, Mercury, and Ganymede, and has publications on the
thickness of basalt in the lunar maria, and on the streams, lakes, and
watersheds on Mars.

Meeting starts promptly at 7pm at the Chester's Hamburgers at Loop 410 and New
Braunfels Ave.

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto Christmas Party - December 17th at 6 pm Casa de Schindel - Addendum

2016-12-08 Thread Geary Schindel via Texascavers
Addendum to the Party.

As is our Holiday tradition, we’re asking party attendees to please bring
canned foods or dry foods as a donation to the Sue Schindel rolling pantry.
Sue passes out the food to her needy clients. Food shortages for some folks
become critical near the end of each month.

Thank you,

Subject: [BexarGrotto] Bexar Grotto Christmas Party - December 17th at 6 pm
Casa de Schindel

Folks,
The Bexar Grotto Holiday Party will be held on Saturday, December 17th from 6
pm until whenever at Geary and Sue Schindel’s house located at 11310 Whisper
Dawn in San Antonio. Phone is 210.479.2151. This is the same location as last
year. The grotto will be providing a ham and other fixings and attendees are
asked to bring an appropriate dish or dishes. There is a grill available in the
backyard but we also encourage folks to bring dishes that have already been
prepared as much of the kitchen space is taken up by blenders and glass
containers and there is little room to prepare a dish. There is a microwave,
oven, and stove top for heating up dishes as necessary.
The grotto will not be providing adult beverages but please feel free to bring
your own beverage of choice. Please make sure that you drink responsibly.
There will also be a White Elephant gift exchange with certain restrictions.
Gifts in the $5 to $20 range are appropriate and creative homemade gifts are
always appreciated – especially if they are funny or related to caving (maybe
another “Cat O 9” will make an appearance). The house rules are that If you
receive a gift, you must take it home. If no one takes your gift, you have to
take that home also. The only exception is beer, wine, or liquor – you can
leave that. We would also encourage you to take home your dishes you bring and
check out the selection as you may have one left over from last year. Please no
pets as gifts – they tend to be left behind and usually end up in my neighbor’s
yard for some reason.
We’re all for a separate exchange for kids if a parent wants to organize that.
My kids are great so no, you can’t change your kids for my kids no matter how
much my kids beg.
 Couple of ground rules:
 • Event attire is Christmas Casual. That means you’re welcome to dress
up or not but please, make sure you change out of caving cloths and leave muddy
boots in the car. If you need a shower before the party, we have a hose in the
backyard.
 • If you’ve had too much to drink, we will find someone to drive you
home or find a place for you at or under the house.
 • Kids are welcome but they need to be well behaved. No running in and
out of the house or playing around the fire in the backyard. Our house is not
kid proof and we don’t want anyone hurt.
 •
 • Please be careful where you park and don’t block any of the
neighbor’s drive ways. However, street parking is fair game so don’t let anyone
tell you otherwise. No open containers in the street and please don’t throw any
bottles in people’s front or backyards.
 • The hot tub is hot and open for business. If you want to get in,
plan accordingly. Please no diving or jumping and no snorkels and masks and
there is no lifeguard on duty. Tub at your own risk.
 • Please leave your guns at home.
 • No keg stands, that resulted in some pretty messy accidents at the
last party and we don’t need that in the house.

 • If you get a Cat O Nine Tails in the gift exchange, we would
recommend you put it away as they can leave some nasty long term marks for the
inexperienced.
 • No pets, including service animals. We now have three pets that
don’t tolerate other animals very well – no matter how well trained they are.
 • Stay off the roof and out of the trees – no good can come of it
(geezzz. I hate having to keep posting this every year).
Hopefully, the ground rules aren’t too restrictive.

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto meetings are moving!

2016-02-24 Thread Bennett Lee via Texascavers
The Bexar Grotto has been meeting at the Chester's at 281 and Thousand Oaks for
about 20 years (maybe more). We've had a full house numerous times. However,
recently, we've even been overcapacity a few times (max is 56). Even when we're
not at capacity, it's been so crowded that we can't move and consequently can't
socialize and meet the new members. So, at the last meeting we voted, and...

Effective immediately, the BEXAR GROTTO MEETINGS ARE MOVING to the Chester's at
410 and N New Braunfels Ave (between Broadway and Nacogdoches, not far from
Robber Baron Cave). This Chester's meeting room seats 108, has the requisite
projector screen, an open area in the front where we can mingle, and, of
course, Chester's delicious hamburgers and wide assortment of beer.

We are on the calendar at the new Chester's, but we are still waiting on final
confirmation while they work out the transfer internally. I'll send out status
and reminders before the next meeting, which is on Monday, March 14.

The new Chester's address is:
1006 NE Interstate 410 Loop
San Antonio, TX 78209

Here's a map of the location:

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto Holiday (Christmas/Hanukah/Kwanza/Ramadan) Party Announcement

2015-12-10 Thread Geary Schindel via Texascavers
Folks,

This is a reminder of the Bexar Grotto Holiday
(Christmas/Hanukah/Kwanza/Ramadan) Party is scheduled for Saturday, December 12
(2015) starting at 6 pm at Geary and Sue Schindel’s house at 11310 Whisper
Dawn, San Antonio, Texas 78230. (That is this weekend for the calendar
challenged)

Phone number is 210.479.2151.

Who is invited:

Bexar Grotto members and their guests as well as cavers and caving vagabonds,
Ne’er-do-wells, malcontents, and miscreants passing though the area. As long as
you bring a dish, we won’t think badly of you.

Party Terms and Conditions.

The party is a pot luck. The grotto is providing a ham and turkey and some
fixings. However, please bring a dish. Feel free to coordinate with Sue
regarding dish ideas or needs.

Michelle S. will be bringing a wide assortment of specialty brews complements
of Freetails. If you like something else, please feel free to bring it.

If you need to heat up an item, we do have an oven and microwave. If you need
counter space to prepare a multi-step meal, I would recommend against it. With
an average of 75 guests at the party, it kitchen is crowded and in complete
disarray. Don’t do it.

There is a grill available if you would like to grill something. Notice the
operative word is YOU, not me.

Make sure that you take your dishes home with you. If you see a dish that you
left from a previous party, please also take it. If you find a dish in your
house that isn’t yours, you may want to bring it and see if it’s ours or
someone else’s. If you see a dish that isn’t yours but will match your current
dishes, talk to Sue, it’s Christmas and everything has a price.

Kids are welcome as long as they are behaved and will listen (at least to me).
You are responsible for their safety. Last year, we had a small fire pit and
some unsupervised young’uns were running around in billowy outfits and I was
concerned they were way too close to the fire. When I told them to stay away
for the fire, they ignored me. This year, they will be asked to leave along
with their parents. Safety comes first and I won’t have some kid catching on
fire and then running into the house with all the presents wrapped in paper. It
could result in a serious house fire. Seriously, please supervise and watch
your kids, there are all kinds of dangers including steps, folks who may have
drank too much, a Christmas tree, glass, bricks, shape metal objects, water
hazards, fire, etc. Please no firearms.

Pets:

If you have a service dog or service monkey that is well behaved, you are
welcome to bring them along. If they have previously bitten people, please
think about whether it is appropriate, especially if the animal drinks a little
too much. We have some cavers that will bite back and it has made for some
nasty fights in the past (fur and hair flying, barking and whimpering, etc).
This kind of behavior is not appropriate at a holiday party.

White Elephant gift exchange

We will have the traditional White Elephant Gift exchange.

If you want to participate, please bring a reasonable gift. ALL gifts much go
home with their respective recipient. We have a leave no trace of the party
policy. The gift exchange will start at 8 pm sharp.

Please, no animals as gifts. I like animals but I already have two as well as
some kids.

Parking

Please don’t block the neighbor’s driveways.

Safety

Stay off the roof and don’t open and really don’t enter the steel reinforced
garage (the one with the four heavy locks and steel bar).

Don’t trip on the crack in the sidewalk before the steps leading into the house
(you’ve been warned). The crack is parallel to the steps with the northern
concrete slab downthrown to the north. Therefore, you are more likely to trip
heading into the house which makes the steps perfectly aligned with the level
of your head when you fall. University hospital is a short ride from the house
but since this is the most common night of the year for holiday parties, the A
team isn’t working to stitch up your head. Be careful.

If you are coming from out of town or have had too much to drink, you are
welcome (or will be required) to spend the night. We will even fix you
breakfast the next day (It may be party leftovers that have been left out all
night or couch crumbs but you’ll be satiated). Please, no bed wetter’s.

Thanks, and hope to see you there.

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto Christmas Party - Saturday, December 13 at 6 pm. Schindel house - Please read carefully

2014-12-06 Thread Geary Schindel via Texascavers
Folks,
We're pleased to announce that the Bexar Grotto Christmas Party will be held on
Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 6 pm at Geary and Sue Schindel's house (11310
Whisper Dawn, San Antonio). Grotto members, cavers, children, and well behaved
guests are welcome (Phone 210.479.2151). The party usually attracts about 75
people and we ask that all guests sign the house book (participants in the
Federal Witness Protection Program are exempt).
Food:
There is the usual pot luck meal and the grotto is providing some meat, beer,
soft drinks, and water. Please bring a dish of some sort, either complementary
meat, dessert, veggies, etc. Dinner will be served around 7 pm. We will have
our grill available for anyone that wants to grill food items and the stove,
oven, and microwave are available for reheating food. Be aware that the kitchen
may get crowded
We'll be fixing our 239 bean salad (we would appreciate the services of a
professional bean counter to make sure this is accurate and goes quickly). FYI,
this is a gasless bean food based on a traditional Texas cooking technique.
Schindel Food Back Donation:
As in the past, in the spirt of the holiday season, we also request the
donation of non-perishable food items to the Schindel Food Bank. Food is
distributed to needy families in the area during the course of Sue's work.
Donations are greatly appreciated and go directly to deserving families.
Specialty Drinks:
If you have a specialty drink, please bring it. We will have a blender.
White Elephant Gift Exchange:
Before the beginning of the gift exchange, there will be the traditional toast
to our departed cavers. The always entertaining White Elephant Gift Exchange
will start around 8:30 pm. If you would like to participant, please bring a
small gift (valued at less than $15 to $20). A cleverly created and constructed
caving craft (C) or appropriate gift is always appreciated. All gifts MUST
go home with the recipient and please, no live animals or loaded guns for gifts
this year.
Sunday Breakfast and Saturday night lodging:
If you are not able to or don't want to drive home, we will be offering bed (or
floor) and breakfast services again this year. Breakfast will be eggs and/or
pancakes. We have two folks that have already reserved space as they are
driving a long distance and will be participating in the grotto caving
project/dig in New Braunfels on Sunday at 11 am. Everyone is welcome on the
Sunday trip but please let me know the number as the landowner may be offering
to cook us a barbeque meal.
Hot Tub:
The hot tub is up and running and handles four folks pretty comfortably. Bring
a towel and appropriate swim wear or not.
Party Etiquette:
During a party last summer, we were asked and we authorized access to the roof.
This year, we are again asking that people stay OFF the roof. I know many of
you will be disappointed but please come anyway. If you bring a dish, cooler,
or other item, please make sure that you take it home. If you see something you
left from last year, also take it home. If you see something that you would
like to take, please ask the owner - everything has a prices and it is the
Christmas season.
Parking:
Valet parking will be available and is offered for free by one of the nearby
neighborhood youth groups (gangs). Parking is also available in the
neighborhood, please do not block any driveways.

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto

2012-12-16 Thread Geary Schindel
Folks,

Last night's Bexar Grotto party was a great success with about 75 folks
attending. Good food, Bob Cowell's Gumbo was outstanding as usual and with
some great pies. The gift exchange was fun but someone left their gift here -
some rope, zip ties, and duct tape, all partially used (very strange).

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto Christmas party tonight

2012-12-15 Thread Geary Schindel
Folks,

Just a reminder that the Bexar Grotto is having their annual Holiday party
tonight (Saturday, December 15, 2012) at 11310 Whisper Dawn, San Antonio,
Texas. Cavers and friends are welcome. If you get lost, the phone number is
210.479.2151.

This is a pot luck so feel free to bring food, drinks, ice, desserts, or
anything else you want to bring. Just make sure your plate goes home with you.
There will also be a white elephant gift exchange. The grill will also be
fired up. If you would like to participate in the gift exchange, please bring
an appropriate gift. We'll draw numbers and let folks select. ALL gifts have
to go home with their recipient.

IF you (or I or anyone else) feel you shouldn't drive home, you're welcome to
spend the night but I will put you to work on Sunday cleaning the house. I'll
also feed you breakfast (you you're up to eating).

Party starts at 5-6 pm and goes until folks leave or fall asleep. The hot tub
is up and running so you might want to bring a towel etc.

Rules, no pets, especially as white elephant gifts (I'm afraid they'll get left
here). Service animals are allowed. Don't block anyone's drive way, be
respectful of the neighbors (I still have to live here after the party), and
STAY off the roof.

Folks,

One slight addition or correct to the Christmas Party announcement, we are also
doing a can and clothes drive, if you would like to donate can or dry goods at
the party, well be happy to distribute them. Same for old clothes, if you have
some clothes you would like to donate, you can place them in a plastic bag and
we'll make sure they get to a good home.

Saturday, December 15th at Geary and Sue Schindel's house at 11310 Whisper
Dawn, San Antonio 78230. Phone is 210.479.2151. This is a pot luck dinner so
bring a dish and your favorite beverage. The party starts between 5 and 6 pm
and runs until whenever. The hot tub is up and running so bring your suit and a
towel or not. There will also be a white elephant gift exchange during the
evening. The grill will be fired up if you want to bring something to cook.
Dress is party casual. For those who don't want to drive home or can't, there
will be plenty of bed or floor space. Anyone left over on Sunday morning will
get breakfast and roped into helping clean up. All cavers and their guests are
welcome. We have a very special guest or two scheduled to attend this year.
Last year, we had 77 folks that signed the guest book.

Party rules - please don't block the neighbor's driveways but parking on the
street is fine (not the sidewalk). If you bring a dish, please try to take it
home with you. If you see one of your old dishes from last year's party, take
that home also. However, our cooler collection is starting to dwindle so if
you see your old cooler, it's ok to leave it until next year. Also, please stay
off the roof, especially since it's new and shiny and very slick.

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto Holiday Party on Saturday, December 17

2011-12-02 Thread Geary Schindel
Folks,

The Bexar Grotto of the NSS will have a holiday party at Sue and Geary
Schindel's house on Saturday evening, December 17, 2011. The address is 11310
Whisper Dawn, San Antonio, Texas. The party will start around 6 pm and will be
a pot luck dinner and holiday celebration. So, whether you celebrate
Christmas, Kwanza, Chanukah, Muharram, Lhabab Duchen, Rohatsu, winter solstice
or Amitabha Budda Day, please come.

Rules of the party - please read very carefully.

Cavers and guests are welcome; however, we would prefer that you NOT bring any
living non-human species unless they are service animals such as seeing eye,
hearing ear, or tasting tongue dogs or monkeys. Dead animals, properly
prepared and in an appropriate holiday sauce, are welcome and encouraged. We
will also have the grill fired up. Bring a dish with some food in it. Take
your dish home when you leave. If you see any dishes (or coolers) from last
year that are yours, take them home also. Don't take anything else home except
gifts. Please bring a can of food or other dry goods as a donation to the San
Antonio Food Bank. Though a limited amount of beverages will be available, you
may want to bring your own. Stay off the roof. The hot tub will be up and
running, please bring your own towel and bathing suit - or not. No fireworks.
If you must yak, yak outside (I prefer the backyard as this doesn't impress the
neighbors and has been known to remove the paint finish off cars.)

The Grotto has a customary white elephant exchange so bring a wrapped gift if
you want to participate. All white elephant gifts MUST go home with the new
owners. The white elephant swap will start around 8 pm.

If you want to or need to spend the night, we'll serve breakfast to everyone on
Sunday morning (you may be asked to help clean the house LOL).
Have fun,

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto survey instruments

2011-10-12 Thread Marvin and Lisa
Cavers,

The Bexar Grotto is searching for several sets of lost survey instruments
(Suuntos or equivalent). They may have gone missing as long as 5 years ago
or more, so if it's possible that you borrowed a set from the grotto some
time in the past, please check to see if you may still inadvertently have
them. The Bexar Grotto name should be inscribed on the instrument. If you
know where these instruments are please reply.

Thank you,

(Suuntos or equivalent). They may have gone missing as long as 5 years ago
or more, so if it's possible that you borrowed a set from the grotto some
time in the past, please check to see if you may still inadvertently have
them. The Bexar Grotto name should be inscribed on the instrument. If you
know where these instruments are please reply.

Thank you,

Marvin Miller

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto contributes to the NSS

2011-03-01 Thread ellie :)
Hey yall,

As many may already know, NSS membership has declined over the last two
years by over 1,000 members and overall NSS membership is aging out with
fewer young people entering the organization. This has resulted in a
decrease in income and will most likely result in a decrease in membership
benefits in the coming year :(

To help offset some of the decline in membership and revenue, the Bexar
Grotto has decided to purchase $100 dollars worth of books from the NSS
Bookstore and donate them to a local library. Inside the cover of the books,
a frontispiece will be added detailing the donation, and referencing the NSS
and Bexar Grotto’s contact information. Ron Ralph, prez of the Texas
Speleological Survey has also agreed to a matching donation of the book
Caves and Karst of Texas for each $100 spent by a Texas grotto. We hope
these donations will encourage the local public’s interest and knowledge of
caves and help lead to greater protection.

The grotto also voted to provide one free NSS membership a year to a new
caver that meets grotto criteria with the hopes that the membership will
encourage participation and long term membership in the NSS.

The Bexar Grotto, the most awesome grotto in Texas, challenges other grottos
in the NSS to match either or both Bexar Grotto initiatives. If each grotto
in the NSS dontated $100 in book purchases, we would contribute over $30,000
to the NSS and add 300 new members to our rolls each year!

Re: [Texascavers] Bexar Grotto contributes to the NSS

2011-03-01 Thread Speleosteele
Dear Ellie,

I applaud your efforts. However, let me tell you about my experience. I
have written and had published a couple of caving books. I have been generous
in donating copies to my local public libraries. Then I check in
a year or so later just to see if anyone's read them. They don't. In at
least one case the library eventually discarded my book Yochib because it had
not been read in many years and someone I know bought it off eBay as a rare
book (cost them $80, but they wanted hard back). I know it was the book I had
donated because I had signed it and written a message in the front.

Grottos donating books to libraries is one thing, but another, and perhaps
more successful membership drive, might be to talk face to face with cavers
who are not NSS members in an effort to convince them that
it's worth their while to join, that they'll get their money's worth out of
it, and to support our national caving
organization because caves is what they're interested in, as opposed to
trying to recruit new cavers. I wonder what percentage of the cavers reading
this are not NSS members? It's probably higher than you think.

I joined the NSS at age 16 in 1964. I'm proud to have been a member for so
long a time. I feel that the current editor of the NSS News is the best
we've had in the years I have been a member. Having served as NSS nominating
committee chairman recently for two years, I can assure you that the volunteer
directors who run the NSS put in very long hours, travel to meetings at
their own expense, and do the best they can to protect caves and live up to the
mission of the Society.

If you like, I volunteer to give a presentation at the TSA convention next
month on the reasons why cavers should join the NSS. I'll moderate a
discussion. Let's hear from people who are cavers but have not joined. Sure,
it's
money you might want to spend elsewhere, but it's not that much.

If you're a caver, please join the NSS. It's money well spent on a good
cause.

RE: [Texascavers] Bexar Grotto contributes to the NSS

2011-03-01 Thread Geary Schindel
Bill,

Bill, you really shit on that proposal. When I discussed the issue regarding
NSS Funding at the grotto meeting last night, they wanted to donate cash. I
recommended that they look at donating some books instead which had a couple of
purposes; 1, to raise a little money for the NSS; 2, to move some inventory of
books such as Cave Minerals of the World which has general appeal but have
saturated the caver market; and 3, increase the presence of the NSS and local
grottos in the public eye. While I think your book was fine, it has a very
specialized audience and I don't think that I would judge the failure of the
public to check out your book with a lack of interest in caves. I think there
is some room here for improving our exposure with some general science books
and some kids books. I know that I tried to find information on caves from my
local public library when I was a kid and it only had a few books. The first I
read was the story of caves which was written for the 12 year olds. At that
point, I couldn't wait to get old enough to go caving.

Anyway, I think the books will either be donated to the Government Canyon State
Nature Preserve Nature Center or to the San Antonio Public Library.

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto Holiday Party

2008-12-05 Thread Geary Schindel
Folks,

The Bexar Grotto Holiday Party is scheduled for Saturday, December 13
starting at 6:00 PM at the Geary, Sue, Graham, and Aspen Schindel's
house located at 11310 Whisper Dawn, San Antonio, Texas 78230. Phone
number at the house is 210-326-1576. ALL cavers and friends are welcome
to attend. It will be a pot luck gathering so bring a dish and come on
down. We will be spreading the holiday cheer to celebrate Christmas,
Hanukah, Kwanza, winter solstices, and anything else folks want to
celebrate so dress accordingly (casual is better).

Rules of the Game:

If you bring a dish, you need to leave with a dish, not necessarily your
dish, just a dish (we have enough dishes left over from last year - you
can take one of those also).

There will be refreshments but if you have specific tastes, bring your
own beverage of choice.

No drinking directly from whiskey bottles - we're trying to run a class
establishment here (beer bottle are ok).

If you have a food allergy, bring an epi-pen - actually, bring two pens,
some Benadryl, medic alert bracelet, etc. Be aware that we don't have a
defibulator at the house but would be happy to try the new taser on you-
It could work - maybe.

Please leave your varmints at home unless they're on a dish - I already
have two varmints, thanks anyway.

Stay off the roof, and stay off my neighbor's roof.

Please make an effort to keep all bodies and bottles within the property
boundaries.

There will be a white elephant gift exchange so bring an appropriate
gift (not an elephant). All gifts must go home with someone.

There will be a TCMA board meeting on Sunday so if you would like to
come to the party and spend the night, you're welcome to stay at the
house and help clean up on Sunday morning. Just let me know so we'll
reserve you some space.

We'll be fixing breakfast for anyone that doesn't make it home - OK,
anyone that stays at the house.

Geary and Sue Schindel

hone number at the house is 210-326-1576. ALL cavers and friends ar
e welcome to attend. It will be a pot luck gathering so bring a dis
h and come on down. We will be spreading the holiday cheer to celeb
rate Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza, winter solstices, and anything els
e folks want to celebrate so dress accordingly (casual is better).

Rules of the Game:

If you bring a dish, you need to leave with a dish, not necessarily
your dish, just a dish (we have enough dishes left over from last
year – you can take one of those also).

There will be refreshments but if you have specific tastes, bring
your own beverage of choice.

No drinking directly from whiskey bottles – we’re trying to run a
class establishment here (beer bottle are ok).

If you have a food allergy, bring an epi-pen – actually, bring two p
ens, some Benadryl, medic alert bracelet, etc. Be aware that we don
’t have a defibulator at the house but would be happy to try the new
taser on you- It could work – maybe.

Please leave your varmints at home unless they’re on a dish – I
already have two varmints, thanks anyway.

Stay off the roof, and stay off my neighbor’s roof.

Please make an effort to keep all bodies and bottles within the
property boundaries.

There will be a white elephant gift exchange so bring an appropriate
gift (not an elephant). All gifts must go home with someone.

There will be a TCMA board meeting on Sunday so if you would like to
come to the party and spend the night, you’re welcome to stay at the
house and help clean up on Sunday morning. Just let me know so we’
ll reserve you some space.

We’ll be fixing breakfast for anyone that doesn’t make it home
– OK, anyone that stays at the house.

Geary and Sue Schindel

If you plan to attend the Bexar Grotto meeting, you might want to
download/print your very own copy of the Bexar Grotto calendar from our website:
http://www.caves.org/grotto/bexargrotto/Bexar_Calendar.pdf

It comes in handy for seeing what's coming up in the Grotto and elsewhere, and
it also makes excellent note-taking and doodling paper.

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto Meeting Program for today Monday 11 Aug

2008-08-11 Thread Geary Schindel

FYI,

Tonight we have a very special program by an unnamed caver on double
super secret caves, from a secret caving state, which can't be named,
but is located west of New Mexico, north of Mexico, east of California,
and south of Utah. It is best known as the black hole of the caving
universe. Of course, you will have to sign a non-disclosure agreement
before the program.

In addition, you may not ask any questions or in any way acknowledge
that you ever saw the program or that anyone else saw the program. This
program will be presented once and only once as Graham Schindel will be
returning to
school at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff in a few weeks.

Hope to see you there.

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto Meeting Program

2008-07-27 Thread Geary Schindel
The Bexar Grotto program for tomorrow evening is a presentation by Mike
Cunningham on a limestone cave in Maine. I bet most folks didn't even know
that Maine had a limestone cave. It is quite interesting and relatively unique
cave.

The meeting starts at 7:00 PM at Chesters Hamburgers at 281 and Mecca.

See you there.

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto supports the 15th ICS!!!

2008-02-01 Thread George Veni
I've just returned from an exceptionally pleasant dinner. Several Texas
cavers arrived in Carlsbad today. Since I couldn't join them caving this
weekend, they met me for dinner. The delicious main course came when Bexar
Grotto President Evelynn Mitchell told me that Bexar Grotto just approved
sponsoring the 15th International Congress of Speleology (ICS) with a $1,000
donation! Bexar Grotto is the grotto closest to the ICS venue and many of
its members are highly involved in organizing the ICS, but they are now the
first grotto to sponsor the ICS. Such support is key to helping keep the
registration price as low as possible. If you work, belong to, or have some
influence or affiliation with a company, agency, or organization, check to
see if they would be willing to sponsor the ICS. They don't have to be
specifically cave-related to be interested in sponsoring the ICS. Check out
the ICS website (www.ics2009.us) and the home page will show you a number of
caving but also non-caving sponsors. This is the last month when sponsors
can join us and still receive maximum exposure through our promotional
media. If anyone would like information on how to sponsor the ICS, the
various sponsoring levels, and what the ICS offers in return, contact Fund
Raising Chairman Ron Ralph at spons...@ics2009.us. One of the goals of the
ICS to bring together as many cavers, and cave and karst scientists,
managers, and educators as possible. Keeping the price of registration as
low as possible will help make this possible, especially for students and
people traveling to the US from other countries.

Thank you Bexar Grotto and everyone helping to support the 15th ICS.

George Veni

Chairman, 15th International Congress of Speleology

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto Meeting Tonight

2008-01-14 Thread Geary Schindel
FYI,

The program will be:

The Soudan Mine and Mars

by E. Calvin Alexander, Jr., Ph.D.

Dr. Alexander will discuss the evidence of the presence of liquids and
the possible presence of microbial life on Mars using the Suadan Mine in
northern Minnesota as an anolog. Dr. Alexander will also discuss some
of the surface features that can now be viewed with the Martian orbiters
including travertine dams and large collapse features to support his
discussion.

Dr. Alexander is a long long time caver as well as karst geochemist and
planetary geologist. He has done extensive work on the karst of
Minnesota as well as worked on the geochemistry of lunar samples. He is
a professor with the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the
University of Minnesota.

Folks, I've seen this talk and it's a real crowd pleaser.

[Texascavers] ***Bexar Grotto Christmas Party Change!

2007-03-26 Thread Ranzau, Joe
To all our friends,

Geary and Sue Schindel will not be able to host this years Bexar Grotto
Christmas Party; as such, there is a last minute change in venue. I
apologize for the electronic invitation, due to time constraints I could
not send out proper invitations to each of you.

Please join Missy, Journey and I at our home on Saturday December 17th
6:30PM as we get together to celebrate the Christmas holiday.

Please bring your children, as they are all most welcome and we
encourage them to come.

As usual for these events, it would be appreciated if you were to bring
your favorite holiday recipe so that it might be enjoyed by others. Most
beverages will be provided, however, if you have a particular brand
please bring it.

We would like to get an idea of the number of guests to expect, so
please respond and let us know your intentions.

Hope to see you all on the 17th,

Rob, Missy Journey Bisset

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto program

2007-03-26 Thread George Veni
Is caving Greek to you? Probably not, if you're signed up with
TexasCavers.com. However, at tomorrow nights' Bexar Grotto meeting I'll
offer those present their choice of viewing one of four DVDs on Greek
caves. Two are in English and two are not. For those who were at the Sonora
restoration project last month, these are the same DVDs that couldn't be
shown there due to technical problems, which have been solved.

[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto Program Announcement

2007-03-26 Thread George Veni
The International Congress of Speleology (ICS) happens only once every four
years. It is an incredible opportunity for cavers and cave scientists from
around the world to meet and share what are often fantastic discoveries. In
many ways, the ICS is like an NSS Convention - but on steroids! And the
next one is coming to Kerrville, Texas in July 2009. During Monday's Bexar
Grotto meeting I will give a presentation that describes the ICS, plus the
many things that need to be done to prepare for it. Cavers from around the
country are actively working on it, but Texas cavers will be especially
needed for many on-site tasks that only Texas cavers can do. Come and get
psyched about the ICS and learn how you can help host the most significant
caving event to hit the Western Hemisphere.

On November 30th I will give a similar program for the UT Grotto. Lots of
things are happening on the ICS and updates will be included. While it
isn't practical for me to travel to meet every grotto, I will provide
another updated version of the program for the TSA Convention in the Spring
(depending on the convention date, I may be out of town). For anyone
wanting more information about the ICS, visit and bookmark www.isc2009.us
and look for some major updates in the coming months.
