[tw5] Re: Reflections -- On the LAG on Getting Up And Doing

2018-04-27 Thread Mohammad
Josiah,
I also use the TW for my students. The issue is due to the non-linear
nature of TW, most students confuse and it is difficult to them to find a
good solution for their problems in using TW.
As a simple wiki the bare TW (standard edition) is enough, but as they go
in depth for more applied usage like dissertation, project and term papers
they have problems can not be addressed
by themselves nor from TW documentation nor simply from TW forum.

I think one way is to have more editions for different applications, also a
structured step by step tutorial (basics, intermediate and advanced) can be
helpful.

One more thing indicated by TonyM, TiddlyWiki is not just a wiki, it is
like a programming language and there is many many ways to adopt it for
your own application. While this
is a very good strength of TW, it makes confusion for newcomers.

[tw5] Bind keyboard shortcuts in View Mode (like presentation or zoomin story view)

2018-04-27 Thread Mohammad
In view mode (means no edit mode) like the presentation (see Talky
Talky: https://tiddlywiki.com/talkytalky/)
How shortcut keys (keyboard and/or mouse clicks) can be bound to some TW
actions like:
 - Goto the next tiddler
 - Back to previous tiddler
 - Switch Theme
 - ...

I am aware that in classic view there is some confusion how TW reacts to
shortcut keys, but in zoomin stroy view or theme with single tiddler in
viewpoint
it should be possible to do this

Yes, that’s it. Google finds many scripts that autoresize iframes to fit their
contents, but I haven’t been able to make one of those work for TW … hoping
someone here has.

[tw5] Re: Customice font sice of sidebar

2018-04-27 Thread TonyM
Xabrina,

I presume you have tried the ctrl-Mouse(centre roller) to dynamically zoom
in our out?

I presume you are editing a SideBar tab, or have created your own?

Also, Keep in mind that due to the zoom feature all font sizes can be
relative, also, items placed in the side bar do need to be designed to fit
in the sidebar given its limited width.

See $:/ControlPanel > Appearance > Theme Tweeks > SideBar Width

See also Sidebar layout and other settings.

[tw5] Re: Reflections -- On the LAG on Getting Up And Doing

2018-04-27 Thread TonyM
Josiah,

I understand the "ideal state" you seek, I think it a worthy ideal that we
may expect never to reach but should keep trying to find.

I hope as my involvement increases I can help in the realisation of this
ideal.

There is however a counter force and that is TiddlyWiki is a platform and
ecosystem. If TiddlyWiki was a Programming language, we would understand
the results may often not be visible to us.

Once again we can see that TiddlyWiki has so many personalities and
possible outcomes, It can be a platform but also a user application, that
even the documentation can struggle to address. A lot of solutions or
plugins are created by "free lancers" so it is amazing the consistency we
do have.

I think there is a maturity coming to tiddlywiki which will help students
and new comers, It is our obligation to develop and promote this"maturity",
if we depend on TiddlyWiki.

Regards
Tony

I'm guessing you're linking to these so they can be found as public
examples of TW. Nice idea. May I ask if you're using the prefix "A

a good idea even if it might be even better with a more distinct such title
(e.g "Public TW:"). That would make them easier to find in searches, I
think.

[tw5] Re: How to properly embed and inject an image into a TiddlyWiki HTML file?

2018-04-27 Thread Zachary Storer
Oh, nice! Thanks. Yeah, I now see the Import button under the tools menu.
For this particular TiddlyWiki I don't have very large image, audio, or PDF
files, and I just want to quickly share it, so a single .html file seemed
convenient to me. Most of the time I do indeed plan to use external images.

Anyway, thanks.

You can just drag and drop an image into TW to "embed" it. BUT, if you do,
you will use up space inside of TW. TW is not a "real" program. When it
reaches a certain size (typically somewhere between 10 and 30 megs) it will
become unusable. That's why it's better to use external images if at all
possible.

These links explain how to use images in TW:

<$list filter="[[$:/state/storyfilter]!is[missing]]">

<$list filter=<> ... here the rest of what's already there/>

On the very top of the $:/core/ui/PageTemplate/story tiddler put these
lines:

\define storyFilter()
[list[$:/StoryList]$(myFilter)$]

that's tested over here, it works for me

Re: [tw5] Re: Stupid question: How can I embed a TW in a static page without getting a scrollbar

2018-04-27 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
I know I'm out of my league here, but when I inspect the code I see an
"embed", not an "iframe". And to me it looks like the onload function
contains quotes within quotes which, AFAIK, isn't supposed to work (it
needs to alternate single quote sets with double quote sets and/or escape
quotes). The onload is where it attempts to set the height of the embedded
object to accommodate the scroll height of the browser, so if that fails
in some browsers then maybe that would be why the scroll still shows up.

It kind of seems more like an HTML/CSS question rather than a TW question.

[tw5] Reflections -- On the LAG on Getting Up And Doing

2018-04-27 Thread @TiddlyTweeter
I followed DesignWriteStudio, run by Steve @ SUNYPoly, with interest for a
second year.

I'm interested in what new students of TW in an active learning context can
achieve in a limited time period. Some of the resulting TW are very good.

But *ONE thing that absolutely stands out to me* is what long term users
here know (that DWS students don't at first)--*the current complications in
FINDING TW exemplars, and code examples*, you need to solve problems and
evolve one's TW ...

Its currently far too much work unless you have a degree in Information
Forensics.

Here is a great comment by one student
 ...

There are a few areas that are a bit mysterious still to me (I initially
tried creating this with fewer plugins, but couldn't get it to work until I
added others found through the Google Group). If I was to recreate this,
I'd probably start by immediately importing every plugin I used.

The comment is considered and liberal. But it illustrates the issue--that
its laborious at the moment to adequately evaluate extant solutions.
Typically, you can only say what you SHOULD have used AFTER you went
through a complex process of trial-and-error to find out.

I think some of the issues SUNYPoly students had were never addressed or
solved simply because its currently too complicated for them (and us) to
figure out what is where and what is what--though there ARE solutions that
could have solved some of their issues better. And their teacher, Steve, is
a mortal who can't know ALL that has been done or where to find it.

IMO, knowing ALL is for SYSTEMS of AGGREGATION. It can't be in people's
heads. And its can't work well through random posts. Normal posts here on
GG often solve problems well. But mostly those solutions disappear into the
Google Swamp within a few days.

Just moaning (again) from the fog
Josiah

Re: [tw5] Please explain to me why TiddlyWiki is a "Wiki"?

2018-04-27 Thread TonyM
Josiah et al,

On further reflection tiddlywiki is already a unique and somewhat indestinct
name and exists in great numbers in search engines. Just what we need, and
already have.

Perhaps instead we need to place keywords around it such as;
Tiddlywiki platform
Applications on tiddlywiki
Tiddlywiki ecosystem
Universal tiddlywiki platform
Tiddlywiki development environment
Tiddlywiki sdk software development kit/platform
Hosting with tiddlywiki
Website development on tiddlywiki
Responcive websites with tiddlywiki
Develop on tiddlywiki
Host tiddlywiki anywhere

These terms and phrases in reference to tiddlywiki will represent its broad
functionality in diverse areas.

Tiddlywiki has already established it's single file credentials, now we need to
promote it beyond that.

The next thing is to promote it to the descreet applications.
Notepads on tiddlywiki etc..

Design your own software/applications with tiddlywiki.

Food for thought
Tony

Re: [tw5] Re: Stupid question: How can I embed a TW in a static page without getting a scrollbar

2018-04-27 Thread Peter Merel
Sorry to be ambiguous Jed. What I’m hoping to see is the same layout as on
http://xscale.wiki, but with the header I’m picking up from the static site per
http://xscalealliance.org/blueprint.html
, and without the iframe scrollbar.
And ideally with a bit more room for the tiddlymap to expand into as well … but
that bit’s just a nice to have.

Yes, it’s the iframe scrollbar I’d like to get rid of there if you know a way.
I’ve tried a few scripts that claimed to adjust the sizes to do it but no luck

Re: [tw5] Re: Stupid question: How can I embed a TW in a static page without getting a scrollbar

2018-04-27 Thread Peter Merel
Hi Jed,

Thanks for digging in. You’re right - the Javascript error message doesn’t
occur for me in Firefox or Safari either. I just tried Vivaldi as well and
couldn’t reproduce it.

But I get it reliably only in Chrome. Only when I click on a link for the first
time, and only when the wiki is in the iframe - I don’t get it at
http://xscale.wiki where the TW is hosted.

I’m running Chrome Version 66.0.3359.139 (Official Build) (64-bit) on OSX
1-/11/6 on a mid-2012 Macbook Air …

The extra scrollba occurs on all these browsers so long as we’re in the iframe.
Again, on xscale.wiki, it doesn’t appear.

Cheers,
Peter

that's a cool idea :) !

yes it's doable - my first idea would be modifying the story list in the
tiddler $:/core/ui/PageTemplate/story
there's a line <$list filter="[list[$:/StoryList]" ... />. That filter can
be extended, you could make it to [list[$:/StoryList]tag[Characters]] and
the story would show only Tiddlers tagged with "Characters" - more advanced
filtering would also be possible, by field, by title - how you want

Now if you create some dropdown buttons on top of your page that let you
select "Players" "Characters" ... those buttons could set the text of a
tiddler, say - "$:/state/storyfilter", to the desired filter like
tag[Players]

if you modify the line in $:/core/ui/PageTemplate/story to:

<$list filter="[[$:/state/storyfilter]is[missing]]">

<$list filter="[list[$:/StoryList]]" ... here the rest of what's already
there/>

<$list filter="[[$:/state/storyfilter]!is[missing]]">

<$vars myFilter={{$:/state/storyfilter}}>

<$list filter="[list[$:/StoryList]]" ... here the rest of what's
already there/>

... then the story gets filtered by the filter in $:/state/storyfilter

the buttons on top of the page must make sure that a correct filter lands
in $:/state/storyfilter

such a button would be:

<$button set="$:/state/storyfilter" setTo="tag[Players]">Players

and there should be something to delete the $:/state/storyfilter tiddler
like:

<$button><$action-deletetiddler $tiddler="$:/state/storyfilter"/>Full
Story

Re: [tw5] Stupid question: How can I embed a TW in a static page without getting a scrollbar

2018-04-27 Thread Peter Merel
No worries Jed, thanks for taking an interest. I’ve got a cut of it up at
http://xscalealliance.org/blueprint.html
. You’ll see two problems there:

1) Extra scrollbar
2) The first time you click on any link in the river, "
Internal JavaScript Error

Well, this is embarrassing. It is recommended that you restart TiddlyWiki by
refreshing your browser
Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'length' of null”

Apart from those things it seems to work okay ...

Both sites are hosted on github-pages and I should mention, in case one of
these is a cross-site issue, I control both domains and can just add the TW as
a git submodule if that would help …

Cheers,
Peter

I was speculating that that could be related to the plugin problem you had just

backslash wich is used for escaping. Maybe that could be the problem ?
What do you mean by hitting save ? Tiddlers are saved automatically, no
need to hit save unless you want to download the entire wiki as an html
file.

[tw5] Re: NoteSelf uses local browser storage seamlessly with a remote synching server

2018-04-27 Thread Danielo Rodríguez

Hello all.

Glad to see that more people is getting interested by NoteSelf.
I'm sorry to read people is having some trouble. To be honest, the new
Cloudant policies have hit the NS community hard. However, I have plans to
mitigate this problem (see below).

I want to make some clarifications about NoteSelf. It is not just a plugin,
neither just a database for your tiddlers, it is an entire product and it
is not fair to call it "just a thing to use a remote database". It has many
features that are not only saving tiddlers automatically, and if you try to
port all of those to "just a database" you will lost many of them. For
example:

- Revision history. You can see the different old revisions of your
tiddlers, and restore them if you want on a more or less nice interface.
- Offline support. You can use NS while you are offline, no network
connection required, and changes will be synchronized automatically when
you come back online.
- No need of backend. Yes, syncing requires a backend, but you don't need
any remote database if you just want to use NS. You can even use the normal
TW workflow (downloading files) and use NS as an intermediary cache-step
for automatic saving.
- An hybrid android app. It may not be spectacular, but works fine and it
is better than using any browser.
- A system that allows you to install plugins without saving a new HTML file

I am happy to see that other people is taking inspiration from NS to build
their own solutions, that's fantastic, but have in mind that NS is more
than just a database.
Also I want to remind you that what makes an open source project strong is
it's community. If each user tries to create their own solution, then we
will end with dozen half-baked solutions. If you think that NS is lacking
some small detail, don't hesitate to file a pull request to add that
feature you are missing.

*For all those users using or interested on NoteSelf:*

I am working on a project to bring easy login flow to NoteSelf. It will use
a passwordless approach, so you will not need to remember a password
neither registration.
You will input your email and hit login, then we will generate a random pin
with a small lifetime (say 30 minutes), then you input that pin on NoteSelf
and we will provide you a long-term authentication token that will be
automatically managed by NoteSelf.
At first the service should be considered beta, will be free and only one
database per user will be provided.
I would like to know your opinions on this approach, if you like it or not
and if you will use it.
There will be a section for novice users, for being able to use this
easy-automatic workflow, and I'll keep a section for advanced users that
want their own couch servers.

Regards

[tw5] Re: March Of The Androids -- Seeking Info On Your Usage

2018-04-27 Thread Ste Wilson
Aha! Danielo!
It may be related to the plugins thing but I'm finding I can't import or save
tiddlers strarting with $:\ which is why my templates aren't working. I have
imported/cloned renamed with out the prefix and hit save. The non prefixed
version is still there on a fefresh. The prefixed one is no where to be found.

This is true running directly from your github site and for the NoteSelf app
which I have updated with the latest plugin versions.

We have the TWechnology, we can make stuff TWetter than it was. Twetter,

it works fine sometimes and some other times the behavior is as you
describe. What I'm currently doing is extracting theme tiddlers from the
database and injecting them into TW before it even boots. It may be related
to an old version of noteself cached on your browser or may be related to
TW internals.

Could you expand on that ? The android app works fine for me,specially with
the latests versions and starting with a brand new wiki. Do you mean a NS
stylesheet or a personal stylesheet from you ?

synchronization problems, mostly due to the fact that TW makes a special
treatment of this tiddler. Also an surprising weird behavior is that open
tiddlers are reflected on real time, so as a consequence you can not use it
at the same time from two different places. It was some king of
inconvenient real-time collaboration.

Re: [tw5] Re: How to edit menus

2018-04-27 Thread Morgaine O'Herne
Hi Simon, Thank you for responding,
I'm building a game website and I wanted tabs at the top to filter wikis by
subject. In most 'standard' websites there are menu items that will take
you to a given page or section of the site; I want those menu items to
select which tiddlers appear, without going to another page.. Pretty much
exactly like http://haltu.github.io/muuri does it, except by subject rather
than color. The menu items would be Players, Characters, The Game Master,
The Game World, and Mechanics. This *very tentative *site is at
https://thpmefsl4nj2xg7nynj04q-on.drv.tw/Harn%20Game%20Website/index.html

Again, thanks
Morgaine
