2020-10-31 Thread Birthe C
Springer,

To be sure, I just tested https://twcloud.github.io/
again clicking the link tw5-dropbox it opens the page TiddlyWiki5 in the
Sky using Dropbox, I selected full dropbox acces, logged in and got a
overview of my files. The TW files i can open are marked with yellow
background. I click the file I want and it opens, I can edit and save it.

I never went directly to the dropbox site.

I am running on Linux Mint 20 using Firefox 82.02

I am relieved now, for a minute you got me scared we had lost that
possibility also. Other than that I am afraid I am not able to help you.

2020-10-25 Thread Birthe C
In the middle of the depression over the losses on tiddlyspot, I managed to
save 3 of my wikies...I would hate to loose the most. My laptop had not
been used for 2 weeks, but when I opened it I realised it was on
hibernation, so sure enough it opened with the browser and the TWspot tabs
open - so I was able to save them from browser memory without refreshing.
That has calmed me down a bit for now.

Backups...sure, only problem my external hard drive with the backups broke
a couple of days ago.

We have been lucky to be able to use tiddlyspot for so long.

Re: [tw5] Re: Why is this so hard to use now?

2020-09-26 Thread Birthe C
For saving single file TW, Timimi is very good. Works on Windows, Mac and
Linux and for Firefox, Chrome, Chromium browsers and more. Install the
extension in your browser as you normally install browser extensions. After
you have done that a tiddlywiki opens and explains how to download a file
you have to run from your hard drive, set up backup and more. I find it is
very clear explained.

You are right, that being able to save reliably and also have backup if
something goes wrong is very important.
If you install a saver make sure it works well and that backups are written
- and in the right place, before doing serious work in your wiki.

You have had lots of work following up on all the questions and creating

all learn from.

The important thing is, that there is something for everyone and that also
goes for money or no money. Most people need to take notes.

TT,

Well, It was rather difficult not to hear or read about RoamResearch
everywhere, that is also the case now, just not as positive, many finding
alternatives. That might have to do with pricing but not only.
https://yetidistro.com/roam/ I know that is rather old now, but still
somebody earned nicely writing how to use RoamResearch.
Especially the paragraph, it being so hard to use,, that once people learn
how to use it, they keep talking about it and writing about it...collecting
material about it.

At least that part we do too, don't you think?

I think people have difficulty envisioning, what Tiddlywiki can be used
for. Editions might be some of the answer, but not only. To me it seems
that everyone might like one edition, if only it was special tailored for
that one person. We have often been told that people do not have time for
that. As far as I know no one has unlimited time.

New users often ask for documentation or is this added to the manual? That
after endless threads often repeated about documentation. Not that simple.

have a use for exactly the kind of problem you describe so well. So glad
you are able to use your wiki for something so important.

Please do not misunderstand the following! Maybe we should all have a wiki
like Eds wiki. We know nothing about our own tomorrow, things happen...and
if we are lucky, we get older and forget more and at the same time loose a
lot of the people we used to share our memories with.

A wiki to help remember what we cannot remember without - and to be
ourselves more (clumpsy way to put it, I know).

I looked at https://giffmex.org/gifts/ideastew.html the original work. I
have looked at it several times, but always feel it kind of work the
opposite way of my brain. Don't let that worry you, I have felt that
earlier with some of Davids work just for later to love and use it heavily.
It all comes to the question are you working from top to bottom or from
bottom up.
I think it is supposed to collect all the information in the Home tiddler
(Default tiddler in ideastew.)
It might be an idea to save a copy and test it in the original how you like
it and get to know it well. When you are sure it fits your way of working,
and know how it works, it will be easier for you to know if it will fit
with other changes you have done to your tiddlywiki.

I myself love Stroll https://giffmex.org/stroll/stroll.html It can be used
for a lot of things. David has made it easy for us to get the parts we want
to use in other wikis. Still some things just do not go well with other
plugins at least not without some changes.

I find that I have to try a wiki for some time, to get the feel of it. I do
not find it easy to understand just from the description. (also it is quite
fun. The tiddlers I created can always be exported and later imported into
another wiki or dragged and dropped. It is only after having used my wiki
for some time I start to know, what I need and what I would like. Still it
changes over time - and all the time. ;-)

[tw5] Re: Stroll - Idea Stew

2020-08-24 Thread Birthe C
Open the control panel from the little wheel icon in the sidebar. Go to the
info tab (The first tab to the left).

That is where you give your wiki the title, the subtitle, your username and
so on. But you are also asked to name default tiddler or tiddlers. That
will be the tiddlers you see when opening your tiddlywiki.

If you do it in Davids https://giffmex.org/stroll/goodies.html
you will see that it is the
tiddler named Get the goodies, hardly a surprise. The snippet mentioned is
a copy of what is in this tiddler.

Now go to your own wiki, open control panel, what is the name of your
default tiddler? Open that tiddler for editing, copy the snippet and
insert in that tiddler. Save and close the tiddler. When your wiki is
saved, you can refresh it in the browser to see your default tiddler
starting up.

Mark,
No, link missing the l was not the cause for me, as I had Tonys playground
bookmarked from earlier use. My bookmarks is in a tiddlywiki I drag along
as I shift from computer to computer or from browser to another browser.
As a matter of fact I have used that wiki from my first day of using TW5.
Early on the wiki was based on yet an adaptation from David Gifford, but
changed during the years of use. It has really helped me when running OS'es
from usb-stick, using my friends computer in a hurry and all that kind of
things. All the notes and comments is in Danish, much easier for me to
search that instead of guessing what something would be called in a foreign
language. Things I have used or just tested got comments making it much
easier for me when reusing. It takes a little longer bookmarking but not
long. I should add it is only used for tiddlywiki related bookmarks.

TW Tones,

As you know I have used your playground a couple of times. I did remember I
used it in Firefox. Setting up lots of computers lately it did take some
time before I remembered on what computer and browser I had used it.
Finally jackpot. In Firefox I found the storage and several more entries
from your playground. I deleted one at a time, just to see if that was
possible. Finally I had deleted every entry. Refreshed the browser and
ready to start using it again. ;-) A quick test did not find any reverse
effects, but will report If I find any.

I did of course not see any errors, as I used it quite some time before you
experienced this. And your favicon is showing.

I think it is a good thing that we learn a little about all this.

I have been thinking about something, It may be totally stupid, but I will
describe it anyway. We have been warned about using local storage, as it
was not dependable. Could give unpredictable results, due to browser
emptying or deleting at times. Is it possible to get an error that you get
now due to some part of your used browser storage being deleted, and then
the part left through errors due to lacking necessary parts?

I have no idea? But it would be nice to know.

[tw5] Re: TiddlyWiki Playground Broken (only for me)

2020-08-23 Thread Birthe C
What is disturbing to me is, that searching will find lots of descriptions
of how to, and how the result will be, but the descriptions differ quite a
lot. Users often reports having had unpredictable results.

The many different browsers we are using and the rapid changes in the
browsers the last couple of years makes the confusing worse.

I hope Tony will describe more, when he has used the functionality.

I will just add, doing as I described above, I get to see Tonys wiki on the
left, and the developer tools in a panel on the right. After doing as
described above, I went to applications, and could see the storage from
Antonio Muscios playground, no doubt there.

I haven't used your playground in this browser before, so not much was
stored, only story and history or something like that. An X button to
delete chosen item. I did not do it, as I did not really have anything to
delete, but it seems to me, that it could work.

TW Tones,
I really hope you will find a solution soon.
If you want to go ahead using local storage and I kind of think, you will
;-),we will need to find matching solutions for other browsers too- and
have it described so that users of your playground can find a way out of
potential mess.

With fingers crossed,
Birthe

I find it hard to read due to lack of definition.

It kind of reminds me of the time, when yahoo groups changed...a couple of
years before disappearing completely. It got unusable. How I missed my old
hobby groups,

I will do my best...but fear very much for the change of this group. I do
hope though that the people who have been complaining about this group as
it worked, will get what they want now.

A short while ago the text above the group was edited to make it easier for
new users, after the change that seems to be far too long to be really
readable taking up a large part of the screen and lots of scroll.

2020-08-20 Thread Birthe C
Ste,

I am using whitespace theme and stories plugin. Using whitespace theme you
have the option to have sidebar at the left or at the right. I have sidebar
on the left. I do not have a mobile but on a small screen I get the page
controls in the bottom - but the sidebar arrow does not work, that is true.

Have you tried using the mono theme, I think you might find it a better
fit. I am using it with stroll.

[tw5] Re: Nice mention of tiddlywiki

2020-08-18 Thread Birthe C
Bimlas,

Sorry, but no. I were looking for something that could be used by people I
know, that really are absolutely NOT into computers, scared before booting
even. Only no excuse for not being digitalized anymore.
I ended up using Antix stable or MX Linux Stable. Mostly because I could
remaster and make it easier for myself now...and when they need it. I know
from experience, that some of them will let a couple of month pass before
they boot the "new" computer, and then have an annoying habit of when
scared, delete. (Lots of work for somebody - guess who?)
Truth be told, I am absolutely not too good with computers myself, but most
things and solutions can be found and collected on the internet. That is
when i enjoy tiddlywiki the most at the moment.

I do agree with you and also looked for Debian for the same reasons. I can
tell, that a lot of good can be told about Antix, Wifi is not one of them.
I used a week to get it working GRRR and only by deleting Connman and use
Ceni.

I did test others of course but had to give up for one or more reasons,
mostly hardware issues. Looking at the relevant forums and seeing that the
problems were rather common, I am not the one to use up too much time on
that.

If I find something, Bimlas, I'll make sure to tell about it. Let's hope
others will too.

2020-08-16 Thread Birthe C
Dave,

I have also had some problems installing on Chromium, but then Riz updated
the file we have to download from Github. I works everytime. You NEED to
download it. you need to run it and chose the browser you will use it for.
It works in combination with the extension you installed in your browser.
Also in chromium, you need to select local folder. When I install the
plugin imediately the nice tiddlywiki explaining how to is openedit is
of great help.

When you have succeeded doing this, it works in chrome/chromium just like
in Firefox.

My only problem now is that I often use an old netbook (only 32 bit)...but
they af gradually totally fased out also.

I totally agreed with Mark about Tiddlydesktop, the former version worked
very well but quite some surprised when using the latest. Not that I am
using Tiddlydesktop much.

In case you are wondering about all my questions around the group, I am
reinstalling 20 older computers with different linux os'es ...according to
cpu and ram. Yesterday I got to the slow 2 models and tried MX Linux.
Chocked it ran rather well ;-) One of the options to install was Vivaldi. I
did not do that...but was reminded, that I will get it for my own second
hand computer, when I get to that one. The last in the potsomething to
look forward to.
Tiddlywiki has been a tremendous help in this adventure. I had it on a usb
stick, and could write detailed about every system as I found the relevant
information - and refind when needed for another computer. The next owner
will find a tiddlywiki on the drive with needed information about the
system.
Searching the net, reading and watching youtubestrying something
new...that is what keeps it interesting enough to get through them all.

As I wrote, I have experienced the problem before, in a lot of different

too little ram I think. Nevertheless If I do nothing and wait it will get

2020-08-10 Thread Birthe C
Bimlas,

I think the tutorials you mention would be very interesting. People have
different needs and thoughts before they put together plugins and the wiki
will change with time and experience. Thoughts about how it could be even
better and what might be lacking to get the results they wished for.
Explaining all that and other material they might have been inspired from.
Then the Tutorial how it was put together.
Inspiration is always good - but I have a feeling that there is also some
kind of fashion making special NAMES interesting at the same time. Not
necessarily because they will turn out to be evergreens in note taking.
Several ways to skin the cat and visualise at the same time.

People are different, know and think different ...work different. I am not
sure that even the most perfect of note taking app in theori would suite
everyone.

After the update to the Stories plugin, I find that tiddler titles and

David changed the viewtemplate in Stroll, and that does help in places -
but the constant shifting, with one or two stories and independently of
that with short and long titles. It is confusing.

A short time ago JD made stylesheets to make stories plugin compatible with

https://wikilabs.github.io/editions/tocP/ I like that one and has used it
in a couple of wikis.

Or you could move the toggle button. Open tiddler $:/core/ui/TopBar/menu
and change the tag to $:/tags/ViewToolbar. Now you can toggle sidebar from

It easily get complicated to create, but also time consuming to use. I

Sure Chromium is part of ubuntu distribution. Trying to install from
package manager will find an empty deb file and automatically install a
snap package. That is what has been blocked in Mint.
I did manage to get Chromium from some other repo...(yeah I know- be

For a long time now Firefox has been my main browser, so I am very

Linux Mint users have the "joy" of the discussion around Snap, when it

Work in Firefox until late at night, when you are more than tired, sure you

@Clutterstack,

Searching here often brings a list of results, only I am often not able to
open the results, especially if it is an older one.

It is well-known difficulties and no one should avoid putting a question.
Remember your question might benefit other readers too. A lot of new users
have arrived lately, that is very good news, questions are to be expected.
Remember things have changed over time too, very old answers may be good
answers but not always the best answer now. Lots of changes have taken
place and new things created. Some of the older members may have forgotten
or never known of some good stuff.

Are you thinking of errors of that kind?

Please do not give up.

Are you using the new Groups?

You are creating fantastic material for Tiddlywiki. Always well researched
and you have a way of explaining difficult matters, that makes it lovely to
read and learn from. You make things understandable at least to some level.

Thank you so much for taking the effort. And sorry to be the cause of head

2020-08-02 Thread Birthe C
TW Tones,

It works. I think it could be a good help for me. I am mostly working on
two different laptops, one with a high resolution and wide format, the
other a small older one with low resolution and the old screen format.
Easy to use, but one thing is annoying the modal covers a lot of the view,
cannot be moved. I used it for the setting and then put the relevant part
of you code in a tiddler tagged $:/tags/SideBarSegment. Dragged it to show
right under the subtitle. That made it much easier to see what was
happening and make a judgement of the result.

Thank you for this one, it will definitely be of use for me.

2020-07-31 Thread Birthe C
TW Tones,
Reading this about the necessary amount of ram, I am really wondering, why
I do not have more problems using my laptops. One with 4 gb ram and the
other with 8gb. Looking at the amount of tabs with tiddlywikis and knowing
how big they are...just in front of me. it runs totally okay for days.
Around the time I have to restart the computer due to some system update
any way.
I am running Linux now, but when i buy a new laptop, they normally are
installed with Windows 10 Pro. I want to compare and install linux dual
boot. That normally do not last for long. I would need more ram to enjoy
that.

I think I should be glad that most of the stuff I do on my computer is
tiddlywiki

Quite some time ago firefox got really slow and I changed to chromium as my
main browser for a long time. It worked well and was faster. When I heard
that later versions of Firefox got better, I changed again. Now I do not
feel the same big difference any more. The small difference I still feel, I
have really thought was due to the same factors as Mark explains so well.

And oh, yea to Firefox gradually eating up ram. Always with a lot of
tiddlywikis in work, late a night when you really have to get saved and go
to bed.G. LOL

As I do not know Spanish I wouldn't know, but trying google translate into

I think your experience was so good because you needed translation into
English - big language, you know.
To be honest I think I understood more guestimating the Spanish, than from
the Danish translation LOL.

You are all giving the reason, we should all be so grateful, that so many
are ready to use the extra time to publish their goodies.

@TW Tones,

*How do you handle this problem?*
Most days someone posts a new innovative solution, method or idea that was
not thought of before.

That is just lovely!
Realise that 24 hours each day is what you have got. If you use all of them
"playing" with tiddlywiki it will not end up well. Not well for
work/business or private life. If that is not enough to overcome the drug
like addiction to TW, then think you will soon be in a condition not able
to follow much of the next things to come in this group. We may need to use
Eric's Timer for that. You wanted a sound for that, maybe it is a TW lock
you need.

I am sure you are not alone with this problem.
