Answer found!

In a different matter (*
)
Jeremy showed how the tags:

$:/tags/AboveStory and $:/tags/BelowStory

can add stuff above and below the story river and I just realized this
solves the issue in this thread!

Tobias - thanks, then I know it's not something I did wrong. Don't spend
time on it for my sake but if you some day do, for some other reason, then
I'd appreciate it if you report your findings on the boards. Besides, it
needs a real solution, not a hack. I'll try to bring up the issue again
when Jeremy gets better and see what he says.

Hi Mat,

Playing around with the offset, I am not entirely sure on the status of
this.
I don't believe that hack-142 is doing anything right now.
Will have to investigate if I did something else to "fix" the offset
problem.

Best wishes, Tobias.

Tobias, thank you for your informative answer! At least good the issue is
officially recognized. I'm thinking maybe there should be empty
placeholders scattered around every here and there that people can fill up
if/as they wish - e.g document top/bottom/left and maybe even right of
sidebar and between sidebar and river. Maybe also around the four tiddler
sides, like for we have discussed previously.

Ok, so your hack takes that "scroll-to position" and slips in the offset -
clever! Do I need something particular more than the hack to make it work?
I hope to get it to work here .

Thank you!

The problem is that when you create such a container, any tiddlers will be
positioned wrong, i.e. covered by that container. So, what *hack-142* tries
to achieve is to reposition tiddlers when displayed so that they are taking
the desired / needed offset into account... which otherwise is neglected by
the rendering / scrolling mechanism.

Unfortunately, Jeremy was opposed to configuring a simple vertical offset
to remedy the problem. So, afaik, this is the issue that is intended to
target the problem:

*Improve handling of toolbars/sidebars*
https://github.com/Jermolene/TiddlyWiki5/issues/1285

Not sure at what point it will be tackled.

Or, maybe there could be some invisible element at top, but inside the
> story/ river column, that blocks tiddlers from reaching up to those top
> centimeters?
>

Nope, that doesn't work because the problem is not at the beginning of the
story river... the problem is the location to which the story river scrolls
when wanting to display a given tiddler.

Best wishes, Tobias.

Well, that may be enough when the bar width (height) is very small, but I'm
hoping to find a simple way even for those that want to add e.g background
graphics there - a very common thing for websites. There must be a simple
way... I mean, this should be basic stuff laying out webpages, no?

Not really knowing what I'm talking about, but I'm hoping maybe some CSS
could squeeze in some absolute or fixed div or something that the rest of
the content would 'simply' have to move over to make room for. I tried to
make this work but was unsuccesful.

Or, maybe there could be some invisible element at top, but inside the
story/ river column, that blocks tiddlers from reaching up to those top
centimeters?

I hadn't looked at it closely, but that seems like a rather complex way to
do it. I just set the story top position equal to the width of my top bar.
Sometimes a tiddler will open and the bottom of the top bar will be even
with the top of the text in the tiddler title but that is it. I don't think
going with something as complex as he has is worth it in my case,
particularly if it can potentially introduce other unwanted behaviour.

Hi Jed, I really like that TW of yours and that is actually one of the TW's
I've studied for this. But are you actually using the hack-142

he is referring to? I can't find it in your TW.

What do you mean "overkill"? The scrolling part is the exact thing I want
to get working. It is a problem that opening a tiddler from e.g the sidebar
puts it at top so the topmenu covers the title partially. Or even all of
the title if I wanted a wider (higher) topmenu.

Just like for LeftBar I hope to make a
TopBar (obviously not ready yet) that is as
simple as possible to use for less experienced users. tb5 is the only place
I've seen with the scrolling problem solved.

I haven't noticed any weird thing in edit mode with the one I made
. The scrolling
part isn't perfect though, and if you just want the top menu it may be
overkill.
