Bruce, The model originally spec'd for the TS-2100 MTI 240-0530-D *.* Here is the MRTG trace. Had a power failure in July and it settled from a previous 36 to a new 3. These are not absolute values but offset by 47640 to amplify the scale or changes of 1 in 65535 would not be visible. Therefore, the current register reads 47643. Re: [time-nuts] TS2100: List of root commands?
Bruce, The link Azelio Boriani shared is the source I used when doing the same project. Please, post your results. MIne has been running for several years now without any issues. I track the OCXO control voltage register in the 2100. It has 65535 steps and over long periods (1 year) that control voltage hasn't changed. At the very beginning, it did take about 30-60 days for the control voltage to settle down. The only time I get a change is in rare situations where the unit is powered down. When it restarts it may settle into a different control voltage. I have the unit on a UPS and have backup generator for the house. Gerhard R Wittreich, P.E. Bruce, Search the TimeNuts archives. There are many posts with details on installing the OCXO and a few minor required config changes for the TS-2100. I did this upgrade with a MTI 240-0530-C a few years ago and both relied on the archives and added to the group knowledge. I suggest you search TS-2100 OCXO. [time-nuts] UPDATE: Heol N024 GPS for TS-2100 Failure
I heard back from Heol Design and it appears that this is not an isolated issue and Heol is aware of the problem. They believe that something is causing the GPS to lose key settings. They have updated their firmware to reload key settings on power-up in case they had been lost. I am a bit concerned that, while this will offer a remedy if the problem occurs, it will still require a periodic reboot to correct the issue. [time-nuts] Heol N024 GPS for TS-2100 Failure
After 2-3 months of stable operation I noticed today that the Tracking and Locked lights on my upgraded (w/ Heol Design N024 GPS board) TS-2100 were not lit. I tried to access the GPS board but got a GPS Engine Busy and *** err *** handshake timeout error. Everything else appears to be functioning. Basic troubleshooting (ie. restart and reseating the board) have not resolved the issue. It looks like a GPS board failure. I've contact Heol Design this evening and am waiting for a reply. Greg, I did both those upgrades a few weeks ago and have been very pleased with the results. Desoldering the TCXO is a bit tricky and takes some patience. Re: [time-nuts] TymServe 2100 and the 1995 GPS issue
Very good point...It is a new oscillator that has been sitting in a box for 10-15 years. I'll give it a few weeks to settle in. The other very interesting thing I noticed was the variability in the oscillator control voltage before and after installing the new Heol Design GPS. The moving average of the standard deviation of the oscillator control voltage before and after installing the Heol Design gps was striking. The variability of the control voltage for the Heal Design is nearly 1/3 of that for the original Trimble gps. That suggests that the pps signal from the new gps module has 1/3 the variability vs the original gps module. I did consider that this could be due to the new oscillator aging but when I do a linear regression on the standard error of the control voltage before replacing the gps module the p-value for the slope of the line is about 0.5 suggesting that the null hypothesis, that the slope is actually zero, cannot be rejected. Therefore, one would need to conclude that there is no change if control voltage variability vs time prior to the installation of the new gps module and, consequently, there was no change in the stability of the new oscillator (since everything else remained unchanged). Unfortunately, I do not have sufficient run time on the new gps module to reach any meaningful conclusion of variability vs time. If anything it still appears to be dropping at this point. I can further update once I get additional run time. I also noted a very marked improvement in the satellite signal strength reported by the TS-2100. While I don't have any statistically sound data my observation is that the signal strengths are significantly higher and there are always more viable satellites in view. In the past I would never see more that 6-8 with 4-6 having sufficient signal strength. Now I routinely see 10 with 6 - 8 having sufficient signals strength. [image: Inline image 1] Note: The straight lines represent the mean value and are not linear regression although the linear regression and the mean line are very nearly the same for the original GPS data. I suspect the same will happen once I get some run time with the new GPS. Both imply that there is little time dependence, in the short term, on control voltage variability. Gerhard R Wittreich, P.E. Sounds like oscillator aging to me, sometimes they do larger jumps, stay there for a while and then again... Also it would not be suprising that this would happen just after the power was off and oven was cooled down for a moment. Also, brand new oscillators seem to age more rapidly at start and then settles down when older but the effects of aging will never stop completely. But they seem to get better and better when aging. I just received the Heol Design N024 Trimble ACE III clone to resolve the week rollover problem we have been experiencing in the TS-2100's with the original Trimble ACE III gps units. Installation was very straight forward taking about 5 minutes. Re: [time-nuts] TymServe 2100 OCXO (MTI 240-0530-D)
I completed the TCXO to OCXO (MTI 240-0530-D) upgrade yesterday with no issues. TCXO is a bit troublesome to remove (Four through the hole mounts. Can made stiff and difficult to move any corner much. Slowly worked my way around the four mounts repeatedly until they came loose.) but a bit of patience goes a long way. You will need to de-solder the mounting holes for the OCXO but that went well. On restart I updated the two setting Jason Rabel indicated in his Mar 30 2011 post on [Time-Nuts]: OCXO (MTI 240-0530-D) - gain = -20 filter = 0.9995000 and then wrote that to eeprom using: eng eeprom gain -20 eng eeprom filter 0.9995 Make sure to short jumper JP4 on the board so the eeprom write will work. After restart the OCXO took about 3 hours to stabilize before Locked status was achieved. I did a cold restart (Power Off -- Power On did not wait for the OCXO to cool down) after 24 hours and got Locked status in less than 20 min. Now waiting on the new Trimble III clone from Heol to finish the upgrade. Gerhard R Wittreich, P.E. Nick, While I don't know how to build the GPSDO circuit I do have some recent experience with MTI OCXO's. The model number on your OCXO (based on the eBay photo) is 260-0624-C. This is not one of the base model numbers and, therefore, indicates it is a customized version. So to use it effectively you may need to know what customizations were included in this specific model. A common customization includes changing the Tuning Voltage from the base of -10v to +10v to some other range. To use it in a GPSDO you will need to know at least this information about your MTI 260. -- Gerhard On Tue, Oct 29, 2013 at 8:08 AM, Nick Medina poi...@mail.ru wrote: I have bought such generator http://www.ebay.com/itm/MTI-260-261-SC-CUT-5mhz-ultra-high-stability-high-reliability-ocxo-oscillator-/291005366483?pt=US_Radio_Comm_Oscillatorshash=item43c14580d3 I want to use it for GPSDO. I had no idea what the specific characterisics of my MTI 240 (MTI 240-0545-C) were and how did they compare to the TS-2100 stock MTI OCXO (MTI 240-0530-C). I gave MTI a call and found someone willing to help. He dug out the data sheets for both OCXO's and even told me that the TS-2100 stock OCXO was still available and in stock. Unfortunately, the price was $350/ea +S/H...A bit more than I was willing to spend. I tried to post this message to this list with the PDF's attached but the message was reject because it exceed the 128kB limit. If any one is interested in these datasheets send me your direct e-mail address and I'll forward them to you. 1. MTI 240-0530-C (Stock OCXO in TS-2100) 2. MTI 240-0545-C (Currently very available OCXO on eBay) -- Gerhard ___ time-nuts mailing list -- time-nuts@febo.com To unsubscribe, go to https://www.febo.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/time-nuts and follow the instructions there.
Re: [time-nuts] TS-2100 gps receiver setup question
Howard, In a September 2008 post by Jason Rabel in reference to converting a TS2100irig to GPS. The original question stated that the GPS always looked busy. Here is his response...I wonder if this will solve your problem? Quote I've successfully converted my TS2100 IRIG to a GPS model along with several other people. As far as I know, the Oncore module was never used (maybe a planned future upgrade), but the ACE-III modules work just fine. The trick is you need to make a temporary interface with your ACE-III and set PORT1 to 9600 8O1 TSIP in, TSIP out. The receiver is probably set to 8N1 right now which is why it's not working. I dug through my old emails and this bit of information might also be useful: TSIPMonitor32 seemed to always (re)set the receiver to 9600-8N1. My workaround was to use the Acutime TR_Monitor (set to the pallisade receiver) to set the baud rate, then run TSIP chat and save the seeprom settings there. You should be able to find all those programs on the Trimble FTP server. No need to mess with any jumpers or eeproms... Just be sure to flash your firmware to the latest version (which is a couple years old at least I think). /Quote -- Gerhard ___ time-nuts mailing list -- time-nuts@febo.com To unsubscribe, go to https://www.febo.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/time-nuts and follow the instructions there.
[time-nuts] TS2100 Firmware
I have just purchased (eBay) a TS2100-IRIG with firmware v3.1. I believe v4.1 is the latest. I requested access to the Symmetricon software download but have not yet been approved. Not sure what criteria they use for approval or if the TS2100 firmware is still on their site. Does anyone have access to the latest firmware file and is willing to send it to me? BTW...Inspired by this mailing list I am hoping to use a Trimble Resolution T to convert this to a GPS unit. -- Gerhard ___ time-nuts mailing list -- time-nuts@febo.com To unsubscribe, go to https://www.febo.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/time-nuts and follow the instructions there.
