Re: [tips] Anyone Got Some Yogurt To Spare?

2012-05-09 Thread Jim Clark
Hi

1. As Michael P's previous post on Hugh Grant makes clear, "fertility"
is not always an important consideration in men's sexual activity.

2. Given the earth cannot sustain the number of people projected to
occupy it in the near future, perhaps psychologists should direct their
energies to discouraging yogurt consumption.

3. Who funded the research?

Take care

An article on the "Scientific American" website reports some results
from
an unpublished study with mice that examined the relationship of
yogurt
intake and male fertility. I think that the title of the article says
it all:
See:
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=real-males-eat-yogurt

I am tempted to use Alec Baldwin's lines from "Glengarry Glen Ross"
but I will wait for the marshmallows.

Most interesting part of the article:

|The findings could have implications for human fertility. In ongoing
work,
|a team led by Harvard nutritional epidemiologist Jorge Chavarro has
looked
|at the association between yogurt intake and semen quality in men.
*So far
|our preliminary findings are consistent with what they see in the
mice,*
|Chavarro says.

I foresee a change in some men's diets. 'nuff said. ;-)

Well, while on the topic of romantic relationships and delayed gratification,
comedians at the time (1995) had a lot of fun on Hugh Grant's account
after he was arrested in Los Angeles for being fellatioed by street sex
worker "Divine" Brown. At the time, Grant was in a relationship with
Elizabeth Hurley, a beautiful actress and model, and the joke was
"how hard-up was Grant to get a BJ from a street walker in a car
while he had Elizabeth Hurley at home?"

For more on "Divine" Brown who seemed to all right for herself after
being arrested with Grant, see:

For more on Elizaberth Hurley see:

Obviously, all three have to do with facial muscles.Recent research
indicating that individuals undergoing and who have had botox
applications are virtually free from migraine headaches suggest that botox
could be adjunctive to modifying migraines.Extrapolating from Ekman's facial
feedback theory, botox may similarly manipulates facial muscles and impacts
emotional wellness alleviating
migraine conditions-an implication that static and dynamic conditions
of facial muscles may play a role in perseverating brain discomfort.
Feedback(no pun intended) requested.

You can also see at http://ip-science.thomsonreuters.com/mjl/ If that
journal is referenced; if it is you can trust it. All the journals
referenced here have a measure of impact factor

However, it could also be that it is not referenced there and be trustful.

I think it is more important to examine the peer review process involved.
Are reviewers independent, qualified, and face no pressure to accept
unsatisfactory articles? Reputation of Psych journals varies, is
subjective, and is no guarantee of quality or scientific rigor (witness JPSP
and Recent Bem article).

[tips] United Stats of America

2012-05-09 Thread LoSchiavo, Frank
Forgive me if someone mentioned this already...Tonight (5/8) is the series
premiere of "United Stats of America" on the History Channel.

According to their website, "The United Stats of America reveals the stories
behind the most interesting and surprising statistics in American history,
stories that tell us more about who we are as individuals and as a nation." I
figured Tipsters who teach statistics might find the show interesting. Below is
a link to their website.

RE:[tips] Pay to publish journals

2012-05-09 Thread Marc Carter
I had a paper published in Perceptual and Motor Skills, and although there were
no page charges, there was a requirement to purchase a (huge) number of
reprints (want some? :). I always looked on that as sort of an archive of
arcane or almost-interesting research. I'm not sure about Psychology Research,
though.

But I wouldn't call it common, at least as far as I know -- I don't publish
much.
