RE: [tips] 73% flunked
What Michael didn't mention is that 70-80% of the students passed the same test every year over the past ten years, and they completely changed the scoring criteria this year. I'd say that perhaps they should take a close look at the standards used for passing. Are you implying that by requiring higher standards a disservice was done to the current students' pool? I doubt educators in Japan and Pacific rim countries will use your rationalization. michael - Original Message - From: Bourgeois, Dr. Martin To: Teaching in the Psychological Sciences (TIPS) Sent: Friday, May 18, 2012 6:54 AM Subject: RE: [tips] 73% flunked What Michael didn't mention is that 70-80% of the students passed the same test every year over the past ten years, and they completely changed the scoring criteria this year. Well, as someone once said scratch a criterion and find a norm .. Criterion referenced tests have a fixed standard to passing, while normed tests are graded on a curve. == John W. Re: [tips] 73% flunked
If you fund public schools like the third world then you will get results like the third world. Simple. If you undermine the public system with charter schools, vouchers for private schools, and the like, then your results will be undermined. Simple If you pay teachers like they are unskilled laborers, then only people who would otherwise be unskilled laborers will be teachers. (Yes, of course, there will be a talented few who are on a mission to be teachers, but an impoverished system will beat them down and/or squeeze them out soon enough.) Simple. The strategy of the anti-public movement has been transparent for decades now: Do everything in your power to defund, dismantle, disable, and ultimately destroy every public institution you come across, then declare, to your horror, that the public system has failed and that only a private system could possibly do the job. Then, once the private system is in place, squeeze it for every dime you can get out of it, for there will no longer be a public system left to which people can return. Of course, this would only work in a country where the population has been conditioned to regard anything that happens in other countries as being relevant. http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2010/dec/07/world-education-rankings-maths-science-reading Chris --- Christopher D. Hi I presume Chris saw the irony of a Canadian giving this advice? Although American TIPs readers are probably not a representative sample of the USA population. Take care Jim James M.
