I'm trying to install tomcat on my Mac OS X machine...   It's running  
apache that was preinstalled with the OS but when I try to build this  
download I get  7 or 8 of the following errors

Hi I was wondering if there is a way to add host records to Tomcat 5
configurations on the fly without restarting the server. I found out that
adding appname.xml file with context info in it to conf/Catalina/localhost/
directory will make this application available right away. 

I cannot figure out how to add new virtual host in a similar way without
manually changing server.xml file and than restarting tomcat. Could someone
please help?

Hello All,

I am having some strange problem using taglibs in tomcat 4.1.27 and jdk1.4.
My webapp named 'hris', works well without taglibs. I am using 2.3 dtd which
i refer as http://java.sun.com/j2ee/dtds/web-app_2_3.dtd. 
I have downloaded the taglibs standard library (not standard-1.0) from
apache website and its standard-examples webapp works fine when deployed and
run as a seperate webapp. However if I add the tag-libs tag element in my
hris webapp, the tag-lib does not work. I deployed it as

  
/tag
/WEB-INF/taglibs-input.tld
  

and in my jsp page use <%@ taglib uri="/tag" prefix="input" %>
However I get an error message 
The absolute url "/tag" cannot be found

I have tried several different ways and no matter what I do, I get the same
error from 'hris' but the standard-examples works ok. I am baffled and
stuck. Any help or suggestions will greatly help.

Hello,
I will try to be brief , but this will a little explanation of my config to
under stand the question.

I have two boxes. (rh9, tomcat 4.1.30, apache )

Box1 
 


Box 2 is configured the same but /home/unit is an nfs mount.

The problem is they now share the same WEB-INF dir with all the classes,
etc...

What I would like to do is have box 2 have it own WEB-INF, but it still
needs the DocBase to point to 
/home/unit

I though I could make the appBase /home/foo and the docBase /home/unit, but
when tomcat starts up on box 2 all the jars (and I assume other working
class files are still begin deployed to
Deploy JAR /WEB-INF/lib/activation.jar to

Also, when running behind Apache, you have need to have at least as many
Tomcat threads as you have Apache children allowed (since each child will be
talking to a single thread).  You should probably increase the maxThreads on
you AJP/1.3 Connector to match what you've configured for MaxChildren in
Apache.  If you expect your loads to come in bursts, then you can configure
maxSpareThreads low to allow Tomcat to discard threads that are freed up by
Apache killing off children.

Hi Shawn,

There is nothing OS specific about a binary build of tomcat. It is all
java and a few shell scripts (the shell scripts are for unix/linux and
win32). Just get the jakarta-tomcat-5.0.19.tar.gz from the nearest
mirror, make sure you have a recent Java SDK installed (1.4.2), tar xvzf
and you are all set to bin/startup.sh and go.

Hello all,

I have got to be missing something very simple

I have two identical boxes. Tomcat starts on one and not the other

The jar that it says it can not find is there. 
/WEB-INF/lib/mm.mysql-2.0.2-bin.jar
If I do ls -ls /home/unitnetWebapps/WEB-INF/lib/mm.mysql-2.0.2-bin.jar 
It is there

For grins and giggles, I dropped struts-blank.war into a test Tomcat5
deployment.  It worked without a problem.

- what JDK are you using? 1.3 or 1.4?
- did you see the list of prerequisite software on the Struts page?

After that, it's time to hunt for rogue jars...

Do a search at java.sun.com for it.  You'll want 2.3 if you're running
Tomcat 4, or 2.4 if you're running Tomcat 5.  Either way, it's available

As a Java web developer, the spec is your guide to webapp standards and
portability.  At the risk of sounding facetious, it answers all of your
questions except this one:

I suppose, then, I don't understand your question.

What sort of specific problems have you run into?

Admittedly, it's been a while since I've done a struts setup from scratch,
but I don't recall anything special about putting Apache in front.  -that
is, nothing special beyond what you'd do for putting Apache in front of any
webapp (i.e. mod_jk or jk2 configuration).

Assuming you have all of the prerequisite JAR files -- and I think there's
a version of struts-blank.war that includes them -- then you just drop the
WAR file into Tomcat's webapps/ dir and it runs.

Thanks i'll give that a go, does the auto-unpack happen after a restart, or
is that not needed anymore, that would be a pain in a real world.

there are distributions of tomcat that do not come bundled with the example=

This is my own stupid fault .. the taglib was not included in the file =
in question and no error was presented by JasperC for me to pick this =
up.

Hi Bryan,
 
when specifying the 8080 port, you access your pages directly via
tomcat, you thus bypass IIS in that case.
You maybe configured tomcat with security rules (see tomcat.properties
and tomcat-users.xml)
 
If you would like to access tomcat through IIS, you need to use
URL without specifying the tomcat port ( http://localhost/
  for example).

Checked & re-checked my registry settings.  
Checked the config files.  
Sharing and/or web sharing is not enabled.  
IIS5 is set up with a jakarta web root pointed to the folder with the
isapi_redirect.dll. 
The isapi_redirect.dll is installed in the ISAPI filters and has a green
arrow. 

Anyone have any idea what it is that I am missing?

Hi,

I have a major problem with mod_jk.

Apache sends request to mod_jk, but mod_jk just does not return.
I am using ajp12 protocol and Tomcat 3.2.1 JDK 1.3 solaris 8 intel and
apache 1.3.14

This behaviour came up only after a few hours.

If I look at mod_jk.log, I get the log as below.

However, I have another app running on another apache virtual host
using the same config, and that works fine 

The only difference between the 2 apps is that the one that does not work,
uses a worker thread that is shared between 2 tomcat contexts.
The other app that works fine uses a dedicated worker thread ajp12b.
i.e

JkMount /*.jsp ajp12a

I also have a small patch appiled to mod_jk that makes it use the SetHandler
directive rather than sending all request to mod_jk and letting it figure
out
what it needs.

This is almost certainly the infamous JDK1.3 bug.  It has been discussed
*lots* of times on this list (search the archives or read the documentation

Try looking into what it says about starting tomcat on a different port at
the commend line.  If you want tomcat to point to different directory
structures I think that you are probably going to have to use separate
config files.  Are you running tomcat stand alone or are you running it as
plug in to another web server? if so this is a little bit different.

Yes, just modify the port number they will be using. For example, tomcat be
default is 8080, so the second server would be port # 8081

Actually, WAP protocol does not support cookies (at least the version I =

worked on).

You have to deal with URL Rewriting, in order to include the session ID =

into the requested URL. Once there, tomcat automatically reads the =
session=20
ID from the URL instead of using the cookie. This is the same as when=20
programming standard HTML pages with browsers without cookies support.

Take a look to the 'HttpServletResponse' class and the method =
'encodeURL'.=20
This will made the task of including the Session ID in the URL if =
needed.

Yes you can,
if you are interested on having two (or more) tomcat instances running
on a Win2K machine, I can help you further (but on tomorrow as it 
becomes late here). I haven't experienced it on other OS.

Got it! 
Thank you to Randy & Etienne for their help. 

Causes: 
1)  I setup a new web site as opposed to creating a virtual
directory. 
In the virtual directory I: 
disabled Windows Integrated Authentication 
enabled anonymous access using the TOMCAT account.  
NOTE: Do not use the \TOMCAT
account.  
Remove the  and enable IIS
controls the password.  
IIS sees \TOMCAT as a
non-local account and it cannot control the password.


2)  The projsp files furnished by Wrox publishing are hosed up.
These files are referenced by "Professional JSP" [ISBN: 1-861003-62-5].
Removed them and Tomcat runs fine.

3)  Had to make changes in jni_workers.properties, jni_server.xml,
wrapper.properties, workers.properties to reflect the correct values for
JAVA_HOME and TOMCAT_HOME.

First, in your first message, which you is included at the very 
bottom of this message, you indicate that IIS (the Microsoft Web Server)
is 
running on port 8080.  According to your error message, one of the ports

Tomcat is trying to use is already in use when Tomcat starts up, most
likely 
8080.  Therefore, http://localhost:8080   is
talking to IIS, not Tomcat. 

Now, you are getting 403 errors, which are access denined.
Since 
you are running IIS on port 8080 (see first paragraph), you will need to

look at you IIS configuration and turn off the directory security there,
or 
give it a Windows NT username and password (and maybe domain, depending
upon 
your configuration). 

This is a guess, but what you really want is IIS running on port
80 
and some directory (like /projsp) from IIS to redirect to Tomcat.  To do

this, you need to follow the IIS-HowTo and then change the 
uriworkermap.properties file to map /projsp to Tomcat. 

I'm not really sure what your projsp webapp is, but it would
seem 
that its trying to load something at startup that isn't there.  Is the 
projsp.jar file really the WAR file and it should be expanded, or is it
your 
set of classes that should be in the WEB-INF/lib directory?  Was this 
application developed on another JSP engine and therefore might be 
incompatible with Tomcat?

Two points come to mind here.  First off, I totally
agree that at the end of the page the buffer should be
'committed' to the underlying ServletOutputStream -
but I also believe that the ServletResponse should not
be committed from within a dynamically included
servlet or JSP page - is that distinction not clear?

Second, while there is a flushBuffer() method in
JspWriterImpl, this method is NOT a part of the
javax.servlet.jsp.JspWriter interface nor is it public
(it is protected).

An examination of JspWriterImpl.flush() shows that it
does it's own flushBuffer() before calling it's own
'out.flush()' (to cascade the flush to the underlying
ServletOutputStream) and then response.flushBuffer():

Looking at JspWriterImpl.flushBuffer() it does indeed
look like it does all that you'd want it to do from
within an included request, as it simply writes the
current buffer to the underlying ServletOutputStream.

Where trouble is probably being caused is that when
flush is being called it also calls
response.flushBuffer() both directly as well as
indirectly (through cascaded out.flush() calls).  If
we can prevent that from happening in the 'included'
case, perhaps that would be enough to fix the problem?

So, it seems from this, that a simple fix might be to
do the following :

And finally, the PageContextImpl would have to be

to use the new constructor.  It would set the
isIncluded flag based on the presence of the request
attribute "javax.servlet.include.servlet_path".

Two points come to mind here.  First off, I totally
agree that at the end of the page the buffer should be
'committed' to the underlying ServletOutputStream -
but I also believe that the ServletResponse should not
be committed from within a dynamically included
servlet or JSP page - is that distinction not clear?

Second, while there is a flushBuffer() method in
JspWriterImpl, this method is NOT a part of the
javax.servlet.jsp.JspWriter interface nor is it public
(it is protected).

An examination of JspWriterImpl.flush() shows that it
does it's own flushBuffer() before calling it's own
'out.flush()' (to cascade the flush to the underlying
ServletOutputStream) and then response.flushBuffer():

(the above code is identical in both the tc3.2.1
version (JspWriterImpl rev1.4) and the latest in the
cvs web mainline branch (rev1.5).

Looking at JspWriterImpl.flushBuffer() it does indeed
look like it does all that you'd want it to do from
within an included request, as it simply writes the
current buffer to the underlying ServletOutputStream.

Where trouble is probably being caused is that when
flush is being called it also calls
response.flushBuffer() both directly as well as
indirectly (through cascaded out.flush() calls).  If
we can prevent that from happening in the 'included'
case, perhaps that would be enough to fix the problem?

So, it seems from this, that a simple fix might be to
do the following :

where we would redefine or create a new constructor:

where isIncluded would default to false, of course.
And finally, the PageContextImpl would have to be
fixed
to use the new constructor.  It would set the
isIncluded flag based on the presence of the request
attribute "javax.servlet.include.servlet_path".

Hi,
I have a question regarding running MS IIS with Tomcat with SSL support. I
found on your site, both, "Tomcat IIS HowTo", "Tomcat and SSL" and "Working
with mod_jk" documents, but I couldn't find if it is possible to use SSL
with IIS - Tomcat combination.
The  "Tomcat IIS HowTo" document expalins only apj12 redirector, and
"Working with mod_jk" explains apj13 redirector which enables secure
connection.
Is there any way to use mod_jk with IIS, or isapi redirector which supports
ISAPI; or some other solution?

Tomcat is excellent at serving up dynamic content (i.e. servlets) and does a
pretty good job at serving up static content (i.e. HTML, GIF, JPG, etc).
However, if you are expecting a high level of simultaneous hits (where "high
level" varies according to the performance of your hardware), using Apache
with Tomcat offloads all requests for static content from Tomcat to Apache,
which frees up Tomcat's resources to respond only to dynamic requests.

Because each server configuration is unique, you should take some time to
stress test your Tomcat configuration and learn what its performance
limitations are.  Another thread recently recommended JMeter for such a
task.  Let me also add Microsoft's WAS (not WCAT) to the list.  Check it out
at http://homer.rte.microsoft.com/.  Of course, it's Win32 only.

Ok, lets take this one step at a time

First, in your first message, which you is included at the very
bottom of this message, you indicate that IIS (the Microsoft Web Server) is
running on port 8080.  According to your error message, one of the ports
Tomcat is trying to use is already in use when Tomcat starts up, most likely
8080.  Therefore, http://localhost:8080 is talking to IIS, not Tomcat.

Now, you are getting 403 errors, which are access denined.  Since
you are running IIS on port 8080 (see first paragraph), you will need to
look at you IIS configuration and turn off the directory security there, or
give it a Windows NT username and password (and maybe domain, depending upon
your configuration).

This is a guess, but what you really want is IIS running on port 80
and some directory (like /projsp) from IIS to redirect to Tomcat.  To do
this, you need to follow the IIS-HowTo and then change the
uriworkermap.properties file to map /projsp to Tomcat.

I'm not really sure what your projsp webapp is, but it would seem
that its trying to load something at startup that isn't there.  Is the
projsp.jar file really the WAR file and it should be expanded, or is it your
set of classes that should be in the WEB-INF/lib directory?  Was this
application developed on another JSP engine and therefore might be
incompatible with Tomcat?

Has anyone dug into this problem?  I am seeing the same problem Win2k, 4cpu
box using IBM JDK 1.3.

I installed tomcat on a new machine and I'm getting an error I haven't seem
before. My enviroment is:
JDK1.3 (but jdk1.2.2 also produces the error)
Window NT 4.0
tomcat 3.2.1

The error starts when tomcat starts and repeats every 2-4 seconds as tomcat
runs. It dosn't appear to be keeping tomcat from working. Does anyone know
what causes this and how I can fix it?

I'm running Apache 1.3.17 and tomcat 3.2.1 on NT 4.0
I'm trying to use mod_jk. Apparently I need a mod_jk.so
even though this is NT. At least, all the files in apache's
modules directory are xxx.so. Does anyone know where
I can get the correct mod_jk.so for this combination of
Apache and tomcat? I need the binary, I'm not set up to
build it. Thanks much.

Hi Mel,

First, JspWriter needs to be flushed at the end of the page - it has a
buffer, and if the buffer is not commited the data will be lost.
There is a method ( flushBuffer ) in JspWriterImpl, and that method should
be called instead of flush().

In 3.2 we had a lot of problems with the buffers - changing that may be a
bit dangerous. For 3.3, the whole buffering has been re-designed and
refactored, and most problems we knew about in the servlet container
are fixed ( but so far this issue hasn't been fixed - to be honest I
didn't knew about it, I've been focused more on the servlet side ).

It shouldn't be difficult to fix it, and since it is a spec issue I think
this is a must_fix bug.

The best way to make sure it'll be indeed fixed is to send a patch or at
least a test case ( a small war with some servlets/jsps and a 
fragment that we can include in our nighlty tests ).
