Please note that some USB media come with two partitions, the first of which
often is a virtual CD ROM to automatically install some drivers/apps on your
Windows computer. SBS is always using the first partition. If this is the case

If you by GNU mean any well-known Linux-distro, It is not.

Logitech made their own distro for the squeezebox line. SqueezeOS

But as Erland stated there is plenty of fun to toy with and lots of

It sounds great.

I was dubious about having to walk up to it to control the system (I
know you can use the remote without its own display), but I actually
like the ability to use the touchscreen to rapidly control the music
now. The touchscreen is very responsive and a pleasure to use.

I had my Touch up and running in less than 10 minutes.

I'm wondering whether the compliments regarding sound quality are just

sound and video from $50 HDMI cables than from $5 HDMI cables.

SB3 did only 24/48 Touch do 24/96

And the digital output of Touch has much lower jitter and noise etc,
this *may* affect sound quality, in a subtle way.
If some one claim that for example bass is better with an expensive
digital cable, they are victims of placebo the spdif stream does not
have bass.
But spdif is surprisingly analog in nature , it's from 1979 ?

It's not the same as for example ethernet, which is a real network
protocol and communicates in a completely different way, hey you can
get music from the internet without flaws.

Spdif is a real time process involving syncing the clock of the dac
with a clock signal derived from the incoming spdif stream.

That said, the fifo buffers and whatnots in my Meridian processor is
very very good at leveling the playing field virtually to the piont
where i can reliably tell between many of my digital sources.

But for the Record a SB3 sound the same to me as My MeridianG98DH DVD-A
drive on 16/44.1 I think but can not validate with dbt test or similar
that touch is somewhat better, but placebo is reality everybody is
affected.

How long did you wait for the first scan?

Brand new LaCie 500 gig mains powered USB HD 27000 tracks, initial scan
5.5 hours, crashed during artwork scan. Restarted server, this time
completed artwork scan, about 6.5 hours total. Playing an album or
random songs, usually the first track is ruined by stuttering -
restarting, but eventually settles down and plays ok until I try to
skip a track, this usually crashes the server, restarting the server,
DISCOVERING_DIRECTORY PROGRESS takes 20 mins.

Thinking there was a problem with the HD, I attached the Maxtor 500 gig
HD that I use for my PC Squeezebox server. Scan times similar to the
first HD, however after two crashes attempting to scan the artwork, I
gave it up.

I deleted loads of albums from the first HD, down to 14500 tracks.
Checked all tags with Mp3tag, checked all embedded artwork was below
150kb, with TagRename. Mounted this squeaky clean drive on the Touch.
Scan took about 2 hours with no problems. (Remaining scan time is way
out, you can practically double whatever is displayed). Exactly same
problems with stuttering/crashing. DISCOVERING_DIRECTORY PROGRESS now
takes 11.5 minutes.

I bought the Touch with a view to this being the basis of my audio
set-up, however, using the inbuilt server has completely ruined the
Touch user experience for me. As it stands at the moment, I would not
recommend the Touch as a stand alone player/server.

I don't wish to knock this product, the Touch is amazing when used with
the SBS on my PC, thanks to all involved in it's development.

No ;) the logitech webshop works in mysterius ways thats normal .

The products are splendid, I'm really enjoying them.
Whole heartily recommend them to anyone with a serious music interest.

The webshop is crackers, broken whatever ?

You eventually just suddenly get's your product, but it takes some time
and they don't communicate with you in any normal way.
For example you never get any confirmation mail for an order, you
better take notes while your ordering, that's you only chance to get
your order number ( and login if you created an account.)

But they deliver, eventually there is Touch stock in Eu.

Order in Process is Logitech's way of saying that it hasn't been
despatched yet. Once they have sent it, you should get an email with a
UPS tracking number and a link so you can watch it make its way to you
from Utrecht.

It is still showing as in stock on the UK site, but as many of us have
discovered over the last six months or so, Logitech sell things despite
their online shop, and not because of it.

I hope you get yours soon - it is a lovely thing to look at, use, and
(above all) listen to.

first HD, however after two crashes attempting to scan the artwork, I

Many thanks for your feedback!!
I thought I was the only one having this problem so I called the
Logitech support in Germany and they said it was for sure a software
problem and that I should wait for the new version of the server.
I'll wait for the new version and if I still have the same problem,
I'll send the touch back.
I hope they are right and logitech can solve this bug with the new
version...

I think Logitech made good use of the time they took to delay the
release - they have a solid product here, even on it's initial release.
I wish them lots of success with it. Hopefully they can get their
 distribution issues straightened out.

As a point of clarification - I'm using it as a player and controller,
not a server. I may do that at one point to tinker.

There's the rub. The whole point of the delay was to get the Touch's
built-in server working better. If you read though some of the other
threads regarding painfully long scan times and outright crashes, it
seems that work wasn't quite finished.

I bought my Touch to use as a player with an existing server and that
works great.

However, I've done some tinkering with the built-in server. With a
small thumb drive it worked very nicely. When I hooked up my main
backup drive with 48,000 songs, it still hadn't finished a scan at 15
or 16 hours and it wouldn't play some material (M4A) that is supposed
to be native.

I'm a satisfied user because it does what I bought it to do, but it was
sad to see reason for the delay - fixing the built-in server - still
seems to have problems. I'm sure I'll tinker again, but I'm going to
have to block out a good chunk of time where I don't want to play any
music just to experiment.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Icon Amp

2010-04-17 Thread mdecorte

My Squeezebox Touch came in this week and I paired it with an Icon
Amp at 48W.

They are a perfect little pair. The Icon is the same width as the
Touch and acts as a small platform. Sounds great!

Regarding the touch, it's very very nice. The UI is intuitive and
responsive. Sound is great. Sync's perfectly with my three other
Squeezebox Booms.

I hope that Logitech makes a version of this that is just a battery
powered remote. That would be a very nice replacement for the duet.
Maybe they could put a small amp in the duet receiver?

It would be especially nice if the Touch Remote could replace the
Harmony remotes. Upgrade the IR Range Extender with Wi-Fi and now the
Touch Remote could control IR and Wi-Fi devices.

http://www.nuforce.com/hp/products/iconamp/index.php

P.S. no relationship with Icon or Logitech.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SSH into my Touch, any nice things to explore?

2010-04-17 Thread Mnyb

It is an easy way to change network settings.
for example set static ip on the Touch

Btw for some reason the prompt is outside the files system cd /
fix that, if you want to learn some basic linux skills you can use it
for that.

get a good linux book (linux bible is ok) or google some shell
commands

like ls ( dir in dos)
cd is change directory

try ls -la for a more comprehensive list

Your network settings is in the file interfaces

/etc/network/interfaces

try this # cat /etc/network/interfaces

cat is a command that prints a file to the screen so now you can read
it

There is a text editor on-board the Touch vi it is horrible but very
light

just # vi file_name

example:
# vi /etc/network/interfaces

!! google some good instructions on vi before doing this, frustration
guarantee included.

Want to edit your wireless settings fast:

/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

learn to use scp or get winscp so you can copy files

I have as an experiment changed to boot sound on my controller and the
boot screen.

There is an example in the wiki about changing highlight color, you now
that black bar under the menu text's

You can use scp to fetch the messages file if you want to read the
logs if you have a bug to track.

# reboot

reboots it

Or learn lua and do some awesome applets as Erland does

I used to have the SB3 connected to a Cambridge audio DacMagic and the
most noticeable was the extension in base as well as channel
separation. Now with the Touch, the touch comes very close to the
DacMagic. The latter performs a better job in the mids and high tones
as well as channel separation. I would not buy a DacMagic for it if I
didn't have one yet. But since I have one I'll keep it.

Agreed. The analog output from the Touch definitely sounds better (in my
opinion, of course) than the SB3 it is replacing. Overall I'm very
impressed with the Touch. It looks and feels excellent, and the sound
quality is better than expected. I though the original SB3 was very
good, but the Touch is just better all-around.

I also just recently picked up an outboard DAC (my first ever) and will
give it a try with the Touch. The DAC is an AMB Gamma 2. Like the Touch,
the Gamma 2 seems to be very well built and looks nice as well.

iPeng's general qualities are up to others to judge, but generally

Squeezebox Server. Relatively speaking it's even a bit faster since the
queries iPeng uses got optimized on the Touch.

Can you program your play lists with Ipeng ?

Yes.

If my friend has an ipod touch can I pay for it to try it and then when
I buy my iphone transfer it without paying again ?

Puh. Yes, but. You need to use YOUR iTunes account to purchase the App.
You could do that by connecting your friend's iPod to your iTunes and
buying the App n your iTunes. This means all of your friends' music an
apps will be wiped off the iPod (he can restore them later).

App Store purchases are bound to the Account and you can install them
on several devices (5 I believe). You will of course lose one of these
devices while trying, no idea whether there's a way to reclaim that.

How close is the android application to Ipeng now ?

SqueezeCommander has a somewhat similar UI and also supports Squeezebox

It doesn't support plugins, yet, but that's going to come.

(!!!) software generations behind on Android with no official way to
upgrade and half of the Apps in the Marketplace don't run on it anymore
(SqueezeCommander works). Get a newer generation Android phone. Plus
Google/HTC have to fix this if they don't want to kill off the Android
platform.

Get at least a 2G so that you can use the volume keys (1G doesn't have
them)... OK, you probably won't find any 1Gs anymore
The big one (32GB) is a 3G which is a bit faster on scrolling and load
times but that's it.
All of them work fine with iPeng.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Aarrg! SB Touch + SBS 7.5 = waste of money...

2010-04-17 Thread AudioFrog

Ok I am frustrated. I have an SB2 and 2 days ago purchased a SB Touch
which mandates SBS 7.5. I have installed SBS 7.5, 7.5.1 + 7.6 and NONE
of them will FIX the 'Cannot open D:\Itunes' issue. I have a large
Itunes library completely made up of ALAC files and I cannot listen to
any of them. This is such a huge bug for a product that supposedly had
been delayed to make sure everthing worked out of the box.

I have read the threads about this issue and have tried different SBS
builds, different FAAD.EXEs (even one that a none-Logitech person
modified to try and fix this issue) and none of them work.

SBS has always been the Achilles Heel of this product line and when it
works it works well but it has been plagued with bugs that somehow make
it thru 'QA'. I was hoping this would be plug and play but I am ready to
throw the Touch thru a window.

Sorry for the rant. This is just so unacceptable.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Network test on Touch does not go above 2000kbps

2010-04-17 Thread DigitalMitch

triode,

network test can be read either way - test the network between this
device and server or test entire network - therefore some people,
especially without all the history, will make an interpretation which
doesn't match reality.

those of us that are natural english speakers are divided by a common
language, heaven help those who are using it as a second language.

I think 'connection test' may be less likely to be misinterpreted.

the tool is still useful but unfortunately not definitive when
trouble-shooting as I expected - identifying low CPU power could be
equally useful. In fact identifying that network+CPU is insufficient
would be a valid test to highlight that issues are not SBS/Squeeze but
'system' (nearly used 'network' there, damn)

[SlimDevices: Touch] Now Playing Screen Update Issues

2010-04-17 Thread metalbob

I hooked up my Touch and all things seemed fine. I played a few tracks
on my Rhapsody account and tried to switch tracks. Track switched
fine, but the Now Playing screen did not. It remained the same on the
previous artist and song. I factory reset the unit with the little
button above the power supply and started again. I tested an internet
radio station, went back to Rhapsody and started playing tracks again.
The screen stays on the internet radio station. I am able to navigate
around the unit, but the Now Playing screen will not update.

Just before I typed this, I discovered the web-based remote control on
MySqueezebox. I tried that as well and it will not change.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Remote Control Codes

paltomare;536725 Wrote:
Still struggling with the remote codes, can't get them to work on my URC

I just tried a backward approach -- applying the ideas in 'this thread
about Radio IR' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69634)
to update the /usr/share/jive/jive/irMap_default.lua file on my Touch
so that it would be hard-coded to accept JVC codes instead of Slim
(e.g. map arrow_down to the JVC code 0xf78b instead of the Slim
code 0x7689b04f). I didn't have any luck, but I have a pre-release
hardware build, I think at least two revisions older than the retail
units. So you might have better luck. The basic idea is to SSH into
Touch, cd to /usr/share/jive/jive and edit the irMap_default.lua file,
changing the hex values. Once you do that, you'll need to reboot Touch
for the changes to take effect (simply restarting the 'jive' user
interface app does not suffice). If you're comfortable with Linux and
vi, I'd suggest you try it. Save a copy of irMap_default.lua in case
you have to revert, and give it a shot. I'm pretty skeptical -- I think
it may be the case that the IR circuits on Touch have either been
programmed to ignore JVC codes (which would make sense -- the Touch UI
should be more responsive if the IR circuit doesn't bother it with
every silly IR signal that comes its way), or perhaps are even
physically incapable of recognizing both Squeezebox and JVC codes --
see 'this comment from Felix'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=518771postcount=5) which
isn't entirely clear about whether the IR limitation discussed in *that*
thread is an intrinsic hardware issue or design choice.

You need to install it through Settings/Advanced/Applet Installer,

If you tried to install it a few hours ago it might have failed because
I had some server problems on my download page.

After installation it's found in Settings/Screen/ScreenSavers/Custom

Please note that to do any configuration besides using the bundled

I think you can install the official 7.5.0 release if you don't want the

like to run the latest 7.5.1 nightly release.

I've had some idea to look if it's possible to patch it so it doesn't

Don't need too since a Logitech developer is already aware of the issue
(in the DEV forum) but it has not resolved yet. How can this slip past
testing?

I just use Windows Explorer. The Touch should appear under My Network

it appears on my XP Pro computer. Other versions of Windows may be
organized differently, but you should be able to find it through
Windows Explorer. Then just drag and drop, delete files, whatever you
normally do with local Windows files.

For some reason, sometimes the Touch doesn't show up in the workgroup
and I have to goose it a little. In the address bar enter

 \\Squeezebox Touch\logs

and substitute the name that you've given to the Touch for 'Squeezebox
Touch'.The Touch with all of it's shares should then appear in
Explorer. The USB and SD card shares are prefixed with 'media-'.

Thank you! I was able to get in.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch tagging issues

2010-04-17 Thread MadCityGeoff

Here are a couple of issues that have arisen in two days of playing with
the Touch. I have my Touch connected to an external hard drive via USB.
I'm also running SBS on my Mac with OS X Snow Leopard. I have identical
libraries on the Mac and the USB drive on the Touch. Most of the files
are in Apple Lossless (ALAC) format.

The first issue has to do with accessing files via multiple entries in
the artist list. The list shows names from both the Artist and Album
Artist tag. For example, tracks on a classical album might have JS
Bach in the Artist field and Yo-Yo Ma in the Album Artist field. The
album shows up in the artist list twice, once for Bach and once for
Yo-Yo. If I try to select a track from this album on the external USB
drive from the Yo-Yo Ma entry on the artist list, I get a spinning icon
and no music. However, if I select the same item from the Bach entry,
the track plays.

That's on the external USB drive. If I switch libraries so that the
Touch accesses the files on my Mac over wi-fi, the problem goes away. I
can access the track through Bach or Yo-Yo.

The second issue is also related to tagging. The internal Touch server
seems to throw a bunch of tags into the Artist list. Not just Album
Artist--which I see on my Mac too--but the WRT tag on ALAC files too. I
don't see those on the Mac.

For instance, I've got a bunch of Velvet Underground albums. I ripped
them using iTunes and they've all got Lou Reed in the WRT tag. When I
run SBS on my Mac and click Lou Reed, I just see his solo albums.
However, on the Touch with the external USB drive, clicking Lou Reed
shows his solo records and all the albums with the Velvets. If I select
one of these Velvet tracks, I get the spinning icon and no music as
described above. However, I can access the music via the artist entry
for Velvet Underground.

It really would be nice if the two versions of the server were more
consistent. Someone on the tagging forum said that there's no way to
turn off display of Album Artist tags in Apple Lossless files. If
that's the case, you should at least be able to use them to play music.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Misc. Touch questions

2010-04-17 Thread MadCityGeoff

Forgive me if this is obvious, but is there any way to add an item to
the Favorites list on the Touch? SBS on the host computer has various
options, like the heart button for individual tracks and the New
Favorite button in the Favorites list, but I don't see anything for
the Touch internal server. I'd really like to add a URL for the KEXP
live stream. (Aside: does anybody know if it's possible to play the
KEXP uncompressed stream on the Touch?)

Second: After playing back some tracks from the music library on an
external USB hard drive, I've noticed that the Touch seems to use
gapless playback so that one track starts right after another with no
dead air. I don't recall this happening with earlier Squeezebox models.
Is there a way to defeat this feature?

Thanks!

partition, all the working drives had a single primary partition.

I've opened http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=16090 for the

[SlimDevices: Touch] Network Attached Drive?

2010-04-17 Thread metalbob

I was under the impression that the Touch was able to access a
network-attached hard drive without a computer as the unit was running
SBS. Or at least I believe that was the discussion a few months ago on
here. Anyone else able to set this up? I had it running for a while,
but then realized it was running through my computer as I rebooted and
the Touch stopped playing.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Loss of clock - standalone, no internet

2010-04-17 Thread R Johnson

My SB Touch arrived at the office yesterday. It fired up nicely with a
wired connection to my router and downloaded the current firmware. I
inserted an 8GB SDHC card with music content. Worked very nicely.
Then I removed the ethernet connection and ran it standalone with an
analog connection to my office mini-system. I liked the nice digital
clock in off mode. It was automatically set to the right time! I
pulled the SD card to see what new cache files had been created. Then
put the SD card back.

I unplugged the Touch and brought it to my apartment, where I have no
internet service (apart from possibly sponging from a neighbor's
wireless network). Surprisingly, it took a little fooling around to
get the Touch going. But there's no more digital clock. I tried
selecting the various clock screen-savers for the stopped or off
cases. No joy. Sometime a sample clock would come up, but not
showing the correct time or date.

Very curious. User error or system/hardware design?
