SB3 did only 24/48 Touch do 24/96 And the digital output of Touch has much lower jitter and noise etc, this *may* affect sound quality, in a subtle way. If some one claim that for example bass is better with an expensive digital cable, they are victims of placebo the spdif stream does not have "bass". But spdif is surprisingly analog in nature , it's from 1979 ? It's not the same as for example ethernet, which is a "real" network protocol and communicates in a completely different way, hey you can get music from the internet without flaws. Spdif is a real time process involving syncing the clock of the dac with a clock signal derived from the incoming spdif stream. That said, the fifo buffers and whatnots in my Meridian processor is very very good at leveling the playing field virtually to the piont where i can reliably tell between many of my digital sources.
