[Touch-packages] [Bug 1579580] Re: ureadahead reports relative path errors in journalctl output

2018-04-01 Thread Pavel Petrovic
These messages were produced on my system after upgrading Lubuntu 17.10 to
18.04 beta.
One wants to hunt issues in syslog after upgrade, but one has to fight with
these obtrusive messages. :)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1661869] Re: maas install fails inside of a 16.04 lxd container due to avahi problems

2018-04-01 Thread Trent Lloyd
Sure thing!

I conducted two tests based on the reproduction steps in the SRU
template

 * setup lxd (apt install lxd, lxd init, get working networking)
 * lxc launch ubuntu:16.04 avahi-test --config security.privileged=true
 * lxc exec avahi-test sudo apt install avahi-daemon

For xenial, artful versions I installed a container, installed the
current package and then verified that it failed to install/start as
expected. I then removed that container, created a fresh container,
enabled -proposed and tested the install again to ensure it succeeded
with the new version. I then further installed avahi-utils and executed
"avahi-browse -a" to ensure services from the network were appearing and
that the /etc/avahi/avahi-daemon.conf file had changed as expected based
on the patch (which was the only change, there are no code changes).

For trusty I conducted the same tests however the initial package
install does not fail under LXD due to a patch within the trusty version
of avahi that skips the nproc rlimit when inside containers for reasons
that no longer apply to modern lxd versions, however I did still ensure
the avahi-daemon.conf file was updated as expected. The patch is still
required on trusty because a host that has containers on it, will still
have the problem with the avahi instance on the host itself that still
has the rlimit applied (even though the containers themselves don't see
the issue).

Lastly for each version I also installed the broken version and tested
that an upgrade also went as expected rather than fresh install for
completeness.

Hope that helps.

Bug description:
  [Original Description]
The bug, and workaround, are clearly described in this mailing list thread:

  https://lists.linuxcontainers.org/pipermail/lxc-
  users/2016-January/010791.html

I'm trying to install MAAS in a LXD container, but that's failing due
to avahi package install problems. I'm tagging all packages here.

  [Issue]
Avahi sets a number of rlimits on startup including the maximum number of
processes (nproc=2) and limits on memory usage. These limits are hit in a
number of cases - specifically the maximum process limit is hit if you run lxd
containers in 'privileged' mode such that avahi has the same uid in multiple
containers and large networks can trigger the memory limit.

The fix is to remove these default rlimits completely from the
  configuration file.

  [Impact]

   * Avahi is unable to start inside of containers without UID namespace
isolation because an rlimit on the maximum number of processes is set by
default to 2. When a container launches Avahi, the total number of processes
on the system in all containers exceeds this limit and Avahi is killed. It
also fails at install time, rather than runtime due to a failure to start the
service.
   * Some users also have issues with the maximum memory allocation causing
Avahi to exit on networks with a large number of services as the memory limit
was quite small (4MB). Refer LP #1638345

  [Test Case]

   * setup lxd (apt install lxd, lxd init, get working networking)
   * lxc launch ubuntu:16.04 avahi-test --config security.privileged=true
   * lxc exec avahi-test sudo apt install avahi-daemon

This will fail if the parent host has avahi-daemon installed, however,
if it does not you can setup a second container (avahi-test2) and
install avahi there. That should then fail (as the issue requires 2
copies of avahi-daemon in the same uid namespace to fail)

  [Regression Potential]

   * The fix removes all rlimits configured by avahi on startup, this is
an extra step avahi takes that most programs did not take (limiting
memory usage, running process count, etc). It's possible an unknown
bug then consumes significant system resources as a result of that
limit no longer being in place, that was previously hidden by Avahi
crashing instead. However I believe this risk is significantly
reduced as this change has been shipping upstream for many months and
have not seen any reports of new problems - however it has fixed a
  number of existing crashes/problems.

   * The main case this may not fix the issue is if they have modified
their avahi-daemon.conf file - but it will fix new installs and most
  installs as

Revert automatic suspend by default for bionic?

Status in ubuntu-settings package in Ubuntu:

Status in ubuntu-settings source package in Bionic:

Bug description:
GNOME 3.28 has turned Automatic Suspend on by default and set it to 20
  minutes:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-settings-daemon/commit/2fdb48fa

I generally think this is a good thing. There are a few issues though.

  1. The computer will still suspend even if there are remote users
logged in or the computer is being used as a server for files,
  printers, etc.

  2. Some software doesn't set inhibit correctly. ~ahasenack mentioned
he was using the Spotify Snap and the computer suspend after 20
minutes. (Maybe Spotify needs to use the screen-inhibit-control snap
  interface.)

  3. Even if it does set inhibit, there is a report that the computer will
suspend as soon as the inhibit is removed if there is no other activity.
(Imagine a movie playing. At the end of the movie, the computer goes to sleep
immediately.) More details and proposed fix at
  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=705942#c21

  4. There is no GUI way to change this setting for the login screen yet.
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/issues/22

  5. Some users think that desktop computers should be always running
unless told otherwise. Personally, I don't give this argument much
  weight at all.

Since those packages are no longer part of standard Ubuntu, they have

At the moment, it is feasible for us to keep using langpacks.

That means adding "X-Ubuntu-Use-Langpack: yes" to their debian/control

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1760435] Re: Use Ubuntu language packs for various indicators

2018-04-01 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I just took a closer look at indicator-sound, and indeed I saw the line
"X-Ubuntu-Use-Langpack: yes" which was added at the latest upload on
2017-08-29. And the translation template is present in artful, but not
in bionic.

@Sebastien: Someone must have deleted it; I can't see another
explanation.

I made an attempt to upload the template manually, but that seems to not
have worked. Maybe another upload - just a no-change rebuild? - is
needed to make LP acknowledge the template for bionic.

@Sebastien: We need your advice here. Are no-change rebuilds necessary,
or is there a better way?

@Simon: As regards the unity-* packages: Yeah, I would like to see a
full list too. Just noticed that unity-control-center has that line, but
the unity package has not...

Possibly we need to upload all packages, whether that line is already
there or not, and add it if it isn't there. But let's await Seb's
response before proceeding.

** Also affects: unity (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

I'd like a full list of packages needed here before I start making

2018-04-01 Thread Simon Quigley
Hello.

I'll prepare all of the uploads in Bileto:

This is mapped to this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-

I'll upload this set of packages there, but then I'd like some
verification that this is the whole stack that needs these changes. I
also want to know that these changes work...

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1623666] Re: iOS device contents not displayed in Ubuntu

2018-04-01 Thread William F Hammond
Following up to my #49:

I'm working with Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS.

The Martin Salbaba ppa had been working for me with an iphone 5 and iOS
10.3

Recently I went to a new phone running iOS 11, and I fail to get to
photos with ifuse after an apparently successful "idevicepair pair".
Ifuse complains about "lockdownd".

The libimobiledevice packages show version
1.2.0+git20161018-3salbabix27xenial.

The ifuse package shows version 1.1.2-0.1build3.

At bug 1718554, there is the suggestion of a procedure for re-building
from source. It is said that this will fix the problem. I have not
tried it. I would rather have an updated package rather than blindly
follow building-from-source instructions.

Question: Is the Martin Salbaba ppa the standard location for the
libimobiledevice6 and libimobiledevice-utils packages? If not, where?

*This discussion is quite vague. One comment points out "iOS 10

how or if that has been fixed in libimobiledevice git HEAD.

This ppa packages the git version and may resolve the issue:

https://launchpad.net/~martin-salbaba/+archive/ubuntu/ppa+libimobiledevice/+packages

There are several other upstream reports related to this problem.

Partial success patch (idevicepair only) trying to keep GnuTLS:

Failure with GnuTLS, Success with OpenSSL:
  https://gitlab.com/gnutls/gnutls/issues/145

  Ubuntu packages libimobiledevice with "--disable-openssl":
  https://github.com/libimobiledevice/ifuse/issues/32

Duplicate bug 1638177 suggests to repackage libimobiledevice using
OpenSSL to avoid this problem, as per comment 27 below.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1718554] Re: Need updated libimobiledevice to mount IOS 11 devices

2018-04-01 Thread William F Hammond
I wish to second the request of #5 that working access to photos on
iphones be kept up to date in xenial. For the credibility of xenial's
LTS status this should be done.

Up to the recent time of a new device with iOS 11, I had things working with
iOS 10.3 using
Martin Salbaba's ppa for the packages libimobiledevice6 and
libimobiledevice-utils.

Even going for a ppa raises unnecessary system maintenance work for
something as basic as retrieving photos from a phone.

My impression is that there have been repeated stumbling blocks related
to the issue of whether iOS wants ssl or tls. I would like to hope that
ubuntu at runtime can decide to go either way even if iOS (which should
be able to go either way) cannot. (Maybe this is an
oversimplification.)

Bug description:
Below the SRU request form. Please refer to the Original Description
to a more comprehensive explanation of the problem observed.

  [Impact]

   * systemd-logind tool is leaking memory at each session connected. The
issues happens in systemd from Trusty (14.04) only.

   * Three issues observed:
- systemd-logind is leaking entire sessions, i.e, the sessions are not
feeed after they're closed. In order to fix that, we proactively add
the sessions to systemd garbage collector (gc) when they are closed.
Also, part of the fix is to make cgmanager package a dependency. Refer
to comment #1 to a more thorough explanation of the issue and the fix.

- a small memory leak was observed in the session creation logic of
systemd-logind. The fix for that is the addition of an appropriate
free() call. Refer to comment #2 to more details on the issue and fix.

- another small memory leak was observed in the cgmanager glue code of
systemd-logind - this code is only present in this specific Ubuntu
release of the package, due to necessary compatibility layer with
upstart init system. The fix is to properly call free() in 2
functions. Refer to comment #3 to a deep exposition of the issue and
  the fix.

  [Test Case]

   * The basic test-case is to run the following loop from a remote machine:
while true; do ssh "whoami"; done

   * It's possible to watch the increase in memory consumption from
"systemd-logind" process in the target machine. One can use the
"ps uax" command to verify the RSS of the process, or count its
 anonymous pages from /proc//smaps.

  [Regression Potential]

   * Since the fixes are small and not intrusive, the potential for
regressions are low. More regression considerations on comments #1, #2
 and #3 for each fix.

   * A potential small regressson is performance-wise, since now we add
 sessions to garbage collector proactively.

When booted into the new kernel, got super low resolution and nvidia-
settings was missing most of its functionality - could not change

Rebooted into 4.4.0-112 kernel and all was well.

The root cause of the problem has been found to be installing the -116
kernel without a sufficiently updated version of gcc. In my case, my
system received the gcc update AFTER the kernel update.

Uninstalling the -116 kernel and reinstalling it with the updated
version of gcc solved the problem for me.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1754872] Re: gnome-control-center is unusable on xubuntu-desktop, but called from Gear (About this Computer, System Settings) icon, Text Entry Settings, clock (Time & Date Settin

2018-04-01 Thread Norbert
@dino99

Again. I have had pretty small clean installation of mini.iso. Then I
installed `xubuntu-desktop` meta-package. I do not have other desktops
installed. This method is normal and useful. It worked normally for
years. I'm using it for `ubuntu-mate-desktop` without issues.

So you guys, have wrong dependency-trees. Usually I do not care about
Xfce (but I like it for simple design and minimalism), and you can of
course ignore my comments and actions. But do not be surprised at
similar reports when the final release is released.

I still hope for understanding.

2018-04-01 Thread dino99
Hello Norbert

Such cases are expected:
- each DE have its own environment and architecture that can be compatible with
an other one, or not.
- In fact the relationship between them does not really exist, and testing has
not been done to resolve the possible conflict.

Lot of reports have been sent since ages by users discovering free OSs
and testing and mixing different DEs. The result is quite often the
same: most of the time it ends by a clean reinstall.

But the future, when snap installation will become mature and stable,
will allow such freedom.

So the actual logic might declare such report as 'wont fix'

Dear Sean!

It seems you do not understand bug description.
I install `xubuntu-desktop` task-package from mini.iso on 18.04 LTS with `sudo
apt-get install xubuntu-desktop`.

What is the difference with "a base install of Xubuntu"? What is wrong is this
method?
Users should be able to install desktop task as they want. Clean installation
is not an option for some (or most do not really sure) users.

I attach the list of installed packages. I do not have other desktops
installed.

You should check this again. It may be dependency problem or something
similar.

Checked again today - installed xubuntu-desktop from mini.iso.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1546126] Re: pidof is unsafe even with full path

This was fixed upstream in sysvinit-2.89. Bug can be closed when the
package is updated.

You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1546126

Title:
pidof is unsafe even with full path

Status in sysvinit package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Manual page of pidof says: "When pidof is invoked with a full pathname
to the program it should find the pid of, it is reasonably safe.
Otherwise it is possible that it returns pids of running programs that
happen to have the same name as the program you're after but are
  actually other programs."

However, in the following pidof displays the process number of /bin/sleep
  sleep 5 & pidof /wrongdir/sleep

/wrongdir/sleep could be another executable, but the above happens
even if the file or even the /wrongdir does not exist.

However, if sleep was called with full path
  $(command -v sleep) 5 & pidof /wrongdir/sleep
pidof does not display anything, which is expected.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1706760] Re: lightdm/login session fails to resume after display is locked and goes to black

Title:
lightdm/login session fails to resume after display is locked and goes
  to black

Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
Logging in after a fresh boot works fine. Subsequently, after locking
the screen (either Super + L or allow to auto-lock) and letting the
screen turn off automatically, then attempting to wake the machine,
only a black screen and the mouse cursor are visible. The desktop and
authentication prompt do not re-appear, and though the mouse cursor
moves, the machine doesn't respond to keyboard entry except to switch
  to a virtual console with Ctrl + Alt + 1 (2, 3, etc). From there it's
possible to reboot or kill -HUP lightdm, but in either case, the
active Unity login session is lost. I've check various log files,
including /var/log/lightdm/* but haven't noticed any obvious culprits.

headerbar in unity is used as a toolbar, but without applying the
proper .primary-toolbar class, which leads to make impossible to use
Unity themes properly in other environments (as GS) as they try to

Ubuntu's cron version doesn't support setting MAILFROM to set the

  $ cat /etc/redhat-release
  CentOS release 6.6 (Final)

  $ man 5 crontab | grep -1 FROM
doesn´t do aliasing, and UUCP usually doesn´t read its mail. If MAIL-

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1760274] Re: videos are stuttering extremely

2018-04-01 Thread Mika
In journalctl -b is the same error message regarding totem.

So, now I have additionally installed lxqt and I can say, it ist definitly a
problem in budgie! Why ever.
In lxqt totem plays the video perfect.

Can you change it to budgie?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1760435] [NEW] Use Ubuntu language packs for various indicators

2018-04-01 Thread Khurshid Alam
Public bug reported:

The Unity family of packages was previously part of standard Ubuntu.
Thus all the translation templates were made available to the
translators via Launchpad, and the translations were included in the
language packs.

Since those packages are no longer part of standard Ubuntu, they have
been moved from main to universe. And translations are dropped.

At the moment, it is feasible for us to keep using langpacks.

That means adding "X-Ubuntu-Use-Langpack: yes" to their debian/control
and doing an upload.

The i915 Kabylake GuC firmware is failing to load on boot, and

correct file size and md5 listed on 01.org.

I then ran update-initramfs verbosely, and see that only
  /lib/firmware/i915/skl_guc_ver6_1.bin is being added.
  /lib/firmware/i915/bxt_guc_ver8_7.bin and
  /lib/firmware/i915/kbl_guc_ver9_14.bin seem to be ignored.

Title:
update-initramfs not adding i915 GuC firmware, firmware fails to load

Status in initramfs-tools:
  New
Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The i915 Kabylake GuC firmware is failing to load on boot, and
generating dmesg errors. The Kabylake HuC firmware succeeds. All
files exist. I've also verified the Kabylake GuC firmware matches the
correct file size and md5 listed on 01.org.

  I'm running a Dell XPS 13 9360 w/ Kabylake on Ubuntu 17.10 and
initramfs-tools 0.125ubuntu12. Perhaps Broxton systems might have the
  same issue?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1760274] Re: videos are stuttering extremely

2018-04-01 Thread dino99
Then it looks like a libglib2.0-0 error, which is totem dependency.
Maybe related to your hardware/mem.

Checking the totem settings, via dconf (dconf-editor), all the options here are
'off' except the first one 'autoload-chapters'
(org.gnome.totem)

Note: #4 expose glib error, but #6 says no error !!!
Note2: is there some 'journalctl -b' related error when you double click on a
mp4 video to be played via totem ?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1760016] Re: gnome videos displays corrupted video

2018-04-01 Thread dino99
Just tested a few mp4 videos with totem on bionic (gnome-shell on xorg
session), and works as expected.
So glance at 'journalctl -b' warnings/errors; or run totem from the terminal,
then try reading the mp4 video(s) to get the scary output.
Please post here the errors you get you reading the video.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1760371] Re: Light Display Manager fails to start

2018-04-01 Thread Shepherd King
Based on the discussion from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1309535, libpam-
kwallet errors appear to be a non-issue in this case. I am still unsure
as to why lightdm and gdm are failing but lxdm succeeds albeit with a
now-crippled desktop environment. The gdm failure messages appeared to
be much less helpful, something to the effect of: "CRITICAL: We failed,
but the fail whale is dead".

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1760371] Re: Light Display Manager fails to start

With libpam-kwallet4 and libpam-kwallet5 removed, I've attached the
output of "journalctl -p err -b -r" for you to inspect as well, see

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1760371] Re: Light Display Manager fails to start

2018-04-01 Thread Shepherd King
This was a system that generally stayed on 24/7, so I am not sure what
updates might have caused this to happen. The last update before the
system rebooted occurred at "Start-Date: 2018-03-31 09:57:33", see
attached update history file.

I should also add that I have been using lightdm along with LXDE on this
system. When the error originally occurred, another failure message was
"lightdm: PAM unable to dlopen(pam_kwallet.so):
/lib/security/pam_kwallet.so: cannot open shared object file: No such
file or directory" so I then proceeded to install libpam-kwallet4 and
libpam-kwallet5 (as you can see in the install history), which made that
error go away, but the lightdm startup problem persisted. I then
attempted to install and use gdm, but it failed as well. I then tried
lxdm and it succeeded, except that there were many applications that
could not be launched once logged into the environment. I believe the
problem has something to do with lightdm and gdm not being able to
unlock a keyring of some sort, but I don't see libpam-kwallet4 or
libpam-kwallet5 mentioned as dependency for it.
