Title:
When closing the lid of laptop, WiFi disconnects and doesn't reconnect
  afterwards

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I am getting this issue since about a year on my Lenovo Thinkpad x240
  with Ubuntu Mate

I have configured the computer to stay awake and empty the screen
(system settings > power management) when I close the lid with the
  power plugged in.

  What I expect to happen:
Wifi network stays connected and network related programs (like bit-torrent
or http downloads) continue to run.

  What actually happens:
Wifi always disconnects after closing the lid and doesn't come back upon
opening it.
I just see a "two arrows"-symbol on the top bar.

When I try to reconnect manually, the wifi symbol is blinking, but the
network manager eventually gives up.
I have to disable wifi (or network as a whole) for a second and enable it
again, to then automatically reconnect to my home wifi network.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1871268] Re: Installation fails when "Install Third-Party Drivers" is selected

2020-10-02 Thread Tim Wetzel
Note that this bug also affects efforts to install older images,
including 20.04 from May and June of this year: those installs crash
also with this same error. This matters, because the bugs introduced by
Updater changes since mid-September have made Ubuntu troublesome and
unstable. Bugs that have occurred or recurred since mid-September
include 1872159 (Booting with splash hangs when external monitors are
connected); 1835660 (Initramfs unpacking failed); 1897185 (Login
triggers suspend after update); and then this one (1871268) when trying
to reinstall to regain stability. Not a good situation at all.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1835660] Re: initramfs unpacking failed

2020-10-02 Thread Tim Wetzel
Continues to occur even once the bug 1871268 install crash has been
dealt with (installing from latest daily-live current image). So affects
even a fresh install. Seemed to appear in mid-September updates along
with recurrence of bug 1872159, the dreaded spinning Ubuntu logo hang on
startup. So a fresh install does not resolve it; and the workarounds of
recreating the ram drive image no longer seem to work either.

This issue 1835660, the spinning logo hang 1872159, a problem with the
login password immediately triggering suspend 1897185, and then the
reinstallation crashes 1871268 (which happen when reinstalling to try to
get rid of all this) appeared with the last two Ubuntu updater packages,
since mid-September. The last of these also included an nVidia driver
update, which is believed to affect at least one of these issues.

Title:
  initramfs unpacking failed

Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
"initramfs unpacking failed: Decoding failed", message appears on
  boot up.

If I "update-initramfs" using gzip instead of lz, then boot up passes
  without decoding failed message.

  ---

However, we currently believe that the decoding error reported in
dmesg is actually harmless and has no impact on usability on the
  system.

Switching from lz4 to gzip compression, simply papers over the
warning, without any benefits, and slows down boot.

Kernel should be fixed to correctly parse lz4 compressed initrds, or
at least lower the warning, to not be user visible as an error.

modified with the patch adjustments necessary to apply to the new
  upstream.

  Upstream's release notes:

  https://github.com/ibus/ibus/releases/tag/1.5.23

The biggest change is that /usr/share/ibus/component/simple.xml, with
the XKB keyboard layouts, is significantly larger than before. The UI
for adding input methods seems to handle it fine. But the additional
layouts should be seen as a bug fix IMO, in response to the bugs
  mentioned at bug #1835541.

Otherwise it's mostly bug fixes (and insignificant low risk
  improvements).

The UIFe request is due to some new translatable strings. I will
notify the documentation and translation teams if this is approved.

Title:
ibus in 19.10 misinterprets ~/.XCompose, somehow maps to the Delete
  key

Status in ibus package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
After upgrade to 19.10, I found that my Delete key was not working as
a Delete key, but that instead if I hit Delete twice it would print
  the character ☭.

Since others were not reporting this issue, I had a look around at my
input config and remembered that I had ibus configured from a long
time ago in order to support Chinese input.

If I disable ibus (either by unsetting the environment variables; or
by killing ibus-daemon), then the Delete key works again as expected.

This is a regression in behavior since Ubuntu 19.04, where I had the
same input setup on my desktop but the Delete key worked without
  problems.

I'm also not sure how to disable ibus, now that I am in this
situation; or if ibus is expected to always be running.

The problem persists if I run ibus-setup and remove Chinese SunPinyin
from the list of input methods, leaving only "English - English (US)".

Hi Lukasz,

on 20.04.1 the sound level is correct (tested on the ISO).

So its only 20.10 where the sound level starts at zero.

Title:
The initial sound level is set to zero (mute)

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
On boot into the live session - or on first install the sound level is
  muted.

I have to use GNOME Control Center - Sounds to change to an
appropriate level. Once changed the level chosen is correctly
  retained between reboots.

This appears to be a regression from 18.04 where the sound level was
  set to - I guess - 80% on the live-session/first install

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1895134] Re: [Ffe] openexr

2020-10-02 Thread Steve Langasek
This is a library transition, but if there are no buildability
regressions and it's already staged in bileto I'm ok with this.

** Changed in: openexr (Ubuntu)

Title:
  [Ffe] openexr

Status in openexr package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Openexr in Ubuntu is dated 2018, and suffers from lots of bugs, fixed
in the last two years by upstream.

Also some security fixes have been added in the Ubuntu packaging, but
  they are now superseeded by

  the new upstream changes.

The sync will bring the package again in a good shape, and I already
prepared the transition in bileto, with no issues and no regressions
  in buildability.

the changes between 2.3.0 and 2.5.3 are listed here

https://github.com/AcademySoftwareFoundation/openexr/blob/master/CHANGES.md#version-240-september-19-2019

  and the bileto/autopkgtests are here:
  https://bileto.ubuntu.com/#/ticket/4246

(note: kio-extras has a missing b-d in proposed pocket, unrelated to
  this)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1699660] Re: systemd-resolve breaks resolution of local network hostnames

2020-10-02 Thread Adrianvg
Plain vanilla install of Kubuntu 20.04 and this still seems to be a problem.
Tried @peci1 solution, but didn't do anything. I still can't resolve names to
IP-addresses.

Title:
systemd-resolve breaks resolution of local network hostnames

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After upgrading to Ubuntu 17.04 (zesty), resolution of my local
network's host names is completely broken. Apparently the upgrade
replaced my existing resolver with systemd-resolve, which deliberately
refuses to pass "single-label" domain names to my domain name server.
That is the server where all my network's host names are kept, so I
can no longer resolve any of them.

Apparently, this is yet another example of Poettering's upstream decisions
causing denial of service to people who have been saddled with his malware.
  https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/2514#issuecomment-179203186

Would someone sensible please put a stop to this forced breakage
during upgrade, and advise on how to fix it now that the damage has
  been done?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1898210] [NEW] X11 applications do not refresh in a timely fashion, resulting in screen corruption

2020-10-02 Thread Ethan Blanton
Public bug reported:

Many X11 applications do not refresh in a timely fashion, and the window
must be disturbed to achieve refresh. Typical disturbances causing
refresh are: typing in the window, interacting with the mouse, focusing
a different application, etc.

I have seen this behavior in:
* Firefox
* Electron apps (Slack, Keybase, Element, Discord)
* Zoom
* Possibly Emacs (see #1893969)
* Xournal
* VMware Player (both the host GUI and the guest screen)

I am attaching a video of this behavior in Firefox; you can see that
when I close a tab, the tab that takes its place paints only partially,
and even mousing with tooltip popups and typing in a text entry cause
only partial corrections. Mousing away from the Firefox window to focus
a window on a different display causes a complete repaint. (Mousing to
another window on the _same_ display would also cause a repaint, it just
so happens that I focused a window on a different display).

I can reproduce this problem with no compositor running, or with compton
running.

This bug is trivial to reproduce and happens nearly constantly. I have
trouble taking screen shots / videos of the behavior on this machine
only because this is a workstation that I use for teaching a University
course and much of the work that I do on it would disclose student
information if shared. I will try to produce more evidence if required,
but it requires some time to do so.

My desktop configuration is three displays. The displays are arranged
in a horizontal row. The left and center monitors are external Full HD
DisplayPort monitors, daisy chained, and the right monitor is the
internal display on my laptop. The left display is DP-2-1, which is
connected to the center monitor by a DisplayPort daisy chain. The
center display is DP-2-8, which is connected to the laptop via
DisplayPort over USB 3 (USB C). The right display is eDP-1. All three
displays have a logical resolution of 3840x2160. The left and center
displays are scaled to Full HD, and the eDP-1 runs at its native
resolution. I use the following xrandr command to configure this:

HIX=3840
HIY=2160
HI=${HIX}x${HIY}
xrandr --fb $(($HIX * 3))x$HIY \
   --output eDP-1 --auto --panning ${HI}+$(($HIX * 2))+0 \
   --output DP-2-8 --auto --panning ${HI}+$HIX+0 \
   --scale-from $HI --left-of eDP-1 --scale 2x2 \
   --output DP-2-1 --auto --panning $HI+0+0 \
   --scale-from $HI --left-of DP-2-8 --scale 2x2

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1854682] Re: Feature request: Add option to "Privacy" in Ubuntu Settings that would enable/disable software installation outside trusted app stores.

2020-10-02 Thread Clinton H
I think this feature would make Ubuntu more secure. Most computers get
infected with malware because people download software from untrusted
sources.

If a user downloads an infected .deb file and then enters their root
password to install the software, could the malware take control over
their computer?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1877879] Re: segfault in iris_dri.so

2020-10-02 Thread Daniel Adamski
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1876219 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1876219

AFAICT bug 1876219 is about a newer driver, iris, being used for older cards,
gen6. Affected cards from that report:
- "Mine is gen6 so the problem is with the default choice of graphics driver"
- "For me (core m5 6th generation) I noticed that mpv/celluloid is crashing"
- "I have an Intel I7-5600U ... and I'm currently affected by this bug as well."
- "Same problem here (Ubuntu 20.04, i915 driver, Skylake Intel(R) Core(TM)
i7-6500U CPU"

Is it still a duplicate if for me the crash happens with a new card, gen8, with
which the newer driver is supposed to work? My hardware:
CPU: Intel Core i5-8250U
GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 620 (GT2)

Because of this, machine has become very slow and response time is awful
Login into the machine, even trying to launch a simple program can take up to
30 seconds of wait before anything happens.

Sound was working fine with previous kernel.
