[Touch-packages] [Bug 1945111] [NEW] Switching proprietary drivers on a not up-to-date system breaks it badly

2021-09-26 Thread Michael Zanetti
Public bug reported:

When a system is not fully up to date, mainly when there's a kernel
update available, software-properties-gtk still allows to switch
drivers, for example switching between nvidia drivers.

Doing so will cause it to update the kernel, but not do a full upgrade.
After the operation software-properties-gtk will suggest to reboot the
machine and most likely cause the user to just do so.

The problem with that is that linux-modules-extras will not be installed
now and after the reboot the user is left with a broken system: Non-
functioning graphics (well, llvmpipe still does if lucky) and what's
even worse, no network drivers and depending on the machine maybe even
without input device support. This will cause the user to require a
second machine and a USB stick (and quite some knowledge) to recover the
system.

I've ran into this a couple of times now, seems reproducible. It is
quite tricky to get out of this which IMO makes this a somewhat critical
bug.

** Affects: software-properties (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1738676] Re: With natural scrolling, horizontal sliders behave backwards

Title:
With natural scrolling, horizontal sliders behave backwards

Status in GNOME Shell:
  New
Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in gtk+3.0 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When natural-scrolling is enabled, controlling horizontal sliders is
  backwards and counter intuitive.

The volume control in the top-bar "speaker" icon is backwards.

  You have to...
  - scroll DOWN, to INCREASE the volume
  - scroll UP, to DECREASE the volume

  Expected behavior:

  Enable natural-scrolling and
  - scroll UP, to INCREASE the volume
  - scroll DOWN, to DECREASE the volume
  - scroll UP, to INCREASE the screen brightness
  - scroll DOWN, to DECREASE the screen brightness

Enable natural-scrolling, hover over a horizontal slider, and...
  - scroll UP, to move the slider to the RIGHT
  - scroll DOWN, to move the slider to the LEFT

This happens for the OSD volume icon, and for the volume slider in the
  topbar menu.

This also happens for screen brightness controls.

This problem occurs for both mouse natural-scrolling and touchpad
  natural scrolling.

  Expected fix:

When the pointer hovers over the speaker icon in the scroll actions on the
speaker icon in the top bar should be reversed.
When the user interacts with a horizontal slider, scrolling to the top should
always move the slider to the right, and scrolling down should always move the
slider to the left, even if natural-scrolling is enabled.

2017-03-29 Thread Michael Zanetti
after some investigation, turns out this actually works, but after
startup, the Stage doesn't have proper focus. Not sure yet where it
ended up, will try to add some code that forces focus on the stage when
the stage goes to spread. (as this could in theory also happen if you
intentionally put focus on the launcher, the panel menu or something and
then go to spread)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1672392] Re: Install an app from Ubuntu Terminal and it doesn't show up in the app drawer

2017-03-13 Thread Michael Zanetti
u-a-l doesn't emit the required signals yet.

The linked unity8 branch implements this update functionality but it is
not tested yet as u-a-l only provides a stub API at this point.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1672087] Re: [unity8] app drawer, clicking on "More apps in store" does nothing

2017-03-13 Thread Michael Zanetti
On Xenial, this will open the apps store scope if it is installed (which
might not be true by default) and on zesty this is supposed to open the
snappy store, which at this point is not fully completed yet...

The actual url to be opened is stored in gsettings and perhaps needs to
be updated when the snappy app store is completed.

Hmm... I don't think it's worth making sure the scrolling stops when the
drawer is closed... However, I think the kinetic scrolling QML is much
too strong when operated with a mouse. This is something that affects
all lists throughout the platform.

silly bug but yeah, have a lot of apps in the app drawer, open the app
drawer, sroll down (1-2 times with your sroll wheel, the scroll
animation has intertia stuff so it takes a bit until it fully stopes),
click outside the app drower to close it, quick open the app drawer
again, you'll see that the app drawer list is still scrolling. i kinda
like it this way because it's fun to play with but probably just
  wasting cpu/gpu

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1669401] Re: [unity8] launcher mouse wheel scrolling direction is inverted in tablet mode (very confusing)

2017-03-02 Thread Michael Zanetti
This should be a non-issue any as soon as lp:~mzanetti/unity8/launcher-
hover-scrolling and lp:~mzanetti/unity8/launcher-scrollwheel land.

The scrollwheel will cycle between app windows instead of actually
scrolling the panel while the panel will autoscroll on mouse hover like
unity7 does.

Closing this as invalid.

have a lot of apps pinned to the launcher so you can scroll with the
mouse wheel, (if you don't have that many apps installed just increase
the launcher size to the max so you'll be able to scroll with the
  mouse wheel)

change from desktop mode to tablet mode by turning on/off the desktop mode
from the indicator menu
the scroll direction gets inverted (up is down and down is up), this is very
confusing for me

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1651473] Re: App Drawer access is not obvious

2017-02-24 Thread Michael Zanetti
Comment #4 is not actually true. You can move the mouse slowly too. It
acts pretty much the same way as unity7. In addition to that, since the
latest release, the BFB now does open the App Drawer too, so does
Super+A, which is described in the Keyboard shortcuts help that appears
when Super is longpressed. Also the Tutorial has been updated to mention
the app drawer.

Closing this as fixed.

using the autopilot-qt snap from the store, it doesn't work for me,
because that snap is missing libqttestability.so.

Building an autopilot-qt snap from this branch [1] makes it work for me.

Running it with that, it works fine, I can call the autopilot interface
on D-Bus:

I think the following tweaks would make it much more clear which window is
selected:
  1) The app icon at the bottom should get bigger or some effect applied to it
when the app window is selected. My eyes tend to look there as it's less
cluttered than the window preview list
  2) Make the border around the selected window preview thicker/darker to make
it stand out more as currently the border highlighting is very subtle
  And/Or
  3) Make the actual window preview larger (or some other effect to make it
move forward) for the selected window so that it's super clear which window is
selected.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1636573] Re: xinit flooding syslog

ran into the same on 16.04. Confirming that installing those python

Bug description:
I am using xinit (1.3.4-3ubuntu1) to start an X11 session as follows
  (kodi is a media center):

  /usr/bin/xinit /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/kodi-
  standalone -- :1 -nolisten tcp vt8

This used to work fine with Ubuntu 16.04, but since the upgrade to
16.10 lots of log messages are sent to syslog. They are all
repetitions of the following two lines:

Oct 24 22:54:50 tiger xinit[26430]: extern "Python": function
Cryptography_rand_bytes() called, but @ffi.def_extern() was not called in the
current subinterpreter. Returning 0.

These messages amount to >200 GB per day, so this is eating up all the
  disk space.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1658190] Re: Searching with the app drawer causes Unity 8 to crash in some circumstances

2017-01-25 Thread Michael Zanetti
The speed at which the search is done doesn't matter... It is even
possible to

search "xterm", delete that, type "s", switch to another vt, attach gdb
to unity8, switch back and then type "a" to make it happen.

Sadly, the stack traces always seem to end up in some Qt metacall magic
for invalidating the filters.

Searching rapidly for apps in the app drawer is causing a crash for
me. I have quite a few applications (including libertine apps)
  available. To reproduce:

  1. Open app drawer
  2. Enter a few characters to match an app
  3. Clear searchbar with backspaces
  4. Goto step 2 (switching characters from time to time)

This crashes Unity 8 for me sometimes as quickly as 20 searches, but
other times it takes up to 50 searches.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1658190] Re: Searching rapidly with the app drawer causes Unity 8 to crash

2017-01-25 Thread Michael Zanetti
Ok, I can reproduce this now. Some findings:

I seems to only happen when searching for "xt" (xterm), then searching
something in the "S" section and when the search result gives only one
result within that section after the second letter. E.g. for me it
crashes when searching for "sa" (sakura), "su" (sudoku) and "sn"
(screenshot) but not with anything else in the "S" section.

Also, the "S" section is the largest one for me. I could not find any
other section where it happens.

i liked this feature at first but now it's becoming super frustrating
to use unity8. i accidentally trigger the spread way to often in many
unwanted ways. 2/3 times when i want to restart and i go with the
mouse on the indicator (top right) i trigger the spread, or when i
want to scroll a page that is semi maximized to the right (ctrl super
right), or when i'm playing neverball with the mouse etc

according to the log in comment 3 it should actually have switched to
windowed mode...

After a chat in IRC it turns out that other things relying on gsettings
doesn't work either.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1440360] Re: Incomplete long-left swipe resets dash

--

Title:
  Incomplete long-left swipe resets dash

Status in Ubuntu UX:
  Fix Committed
Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce the issue:
1 - open e.g. Ubuntu Store scope (from the app scope) or Youtube scope (from
the video scope)
2 - (shortly) swipe from the left to invoke launcher

  Expected outcome:
The launcher can be used to open a pinned app (while the current scope is
still kept in the background) or dismissed to return to the current scope.

  Actual outcome:
The current scope will immediately be closed and the first (main) scope
(typically the app scope on devel-images and the Today scope on RTM) will be
shown.
If I understand the current design guidelines correctly this is the expected
behaviour for a full left-to-right swipe, but not for a short swipe from the
left to invoke the launcher.

This behaviour can be observed on both the current devel-proposed and
  RTM images.

  -
  Desired UX

  - Don't trigger the "go to home" action yet when the long swipe is
started but when user releases the finger and all the long swipe
parameters are fulfilled (distance threshold and direction)

  - Also trigger "go to home" action when any other scope is focused.
Currently action is triggered only when app is focused and when a
child scope is focused but not when one of the dash scopes is focused.

2017-01-10 Thread Michael Zanetti
from the screenshots and description it doesn't seem to be exactly the
same, however, it might very well be related as both happen on resizing.
The other doesn't update the app to the new size, this one makes unity8
resize the window back to what the app thinks it is.

mouse pointer indicates it is there. The only way I can open it is to
use Super+A key combo from a physical keyboard.

too easy to trigger the apps switcher / spread on desktop :'(

i liked this feature at first but now it's becoming super frustrating
to use unity8. i accidentally trigger the spread way to often in many
unwanted ways. 2/3 times when i want to restart and i go with the
mouse on the indicator (top right) i trigger the spread, or when i
want to scroll a page that is semi maximized to the right (ctrl super
right), or when i'm playing neverball with the mouse etc

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1440360] Re: Incomplete long-left swipe resets dash

2016-12-10 Thread Michael Zanetti
With the landing of the app drawer, the long left edge swipe does not
reset the dash any more... Linking the apprawer branch to close this
when it lands.

Title:
  Incomplete long-left swipe resets dash

Status in Ubuntu UX:
  Fix Committed
Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1647417] [NEW] AdaptivePageLayout breaks on loading heavy pages

2016-12-05 Thread Michael Zanetti
Public bug reported:

When the pages to be loaded by AdaptivePageLayout are heavy (say,
require a second to build up), the APL, because of his async nature by
default, still allows user interaction while creating the page.

If during that time the user triggers another action that would push something
to the APL, it will break in two ways:
* the first page will leak in memory
* the second page is visible on the apl, but the back button in the header is
missing

setting APL to asynchronous: false is a workaround for this as the user cannot
trigger any more actions while the page is building up.

If you need an example to reproduce this, install "Guitar Tools" from
the store, edit its sources to remove the "asynchronous: false" from the
APL in there and launch the composer tool and quickly another entry from
the menu. The composer tool is the one that takes long to load, any
other entry can be used to trigger the bug.

I have also seen reports from users in other apps that the back button
in the header is missing sometimes. I am confident they are running into
the same issue.

** Affects: ubuntu-ui-toolkit (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1647415] [NEW] units.gu() emits changed signal before completion

2016-12-05 Thread Michael Zanetti
Public bug reported:

Consider this snippet of code:

---
import QtQuick 2.4
import Ubuntu.Components 1.3

Item {
property int bla: units.gu(10)
onBlaChanged: print("bla changed", bla);

property int blubb: 80
onBlubbChanged: print("blubb changed", blubb);

Component.onCompleted: print("completed", bla);
}
--

The output of this is:

qml: bla changed 80
qml: completed 80

the changed signal should not be emitted before completion, given it is
its initial value and not actually changed.

The current behavior triggers all the onChanged handlers when there's
units.gu() involved, which results in things like change animations
being played at startup and lots of wasted cpu cycles for evaluating all
those changed events.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1646457] Re: No feedback when changing Launcher's icon size

2016-12-01 Thread Michael Zanetti
Actually this seems to mix 2 different things:

* the description says "Make sure 'Desktop mode' is switched off" in
which case changes in the launcher's size would be ignored completely

* Even when in desktop mode, but having the launcher set to autohide, it
would not reveal the launcher in order to give feedback.

For the former we need design input. For the latter, I would think we
can just fix that unity8.

So far this is specced this way by design. I can see how this isn't

screen size instead of usage mode) or if the settings page should hint
that this will work only in desktop mode.

  Side stage hides after rotating

Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  bq M10 rc-proposed r219

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Open an app
  2. Put it in the side stage
  3. Rotate the tablet to portrait
At this point you should see the app which was in the side stage on the whole
screen
  4. Rotate the tablet back to landscape

  Expected result:
The app is visible in the side stage

  What happens instead:
The side stage is closed but the app still has focus as its name is visible
in the top bar (screenshot attached)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1637249] Re: Removing app from the spread closes the spread

Removing app from the spread closes the spread

Status in Canonical System Image:
  Triaged
Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  bq M10 rc-proposed r219

  Steps to reproduce
  1 open 3 apps
2 put one of them in the side stage
  3 do the spread
4 swipe out the app which was in the side stage

  Expected result
  The spread stays

  What happens instead
The spread closes and only one app is visible

What I've noticed: if you swipe an app which was not in the side
stage, the spread stays just fine. Also if there is more than one app
in the side stage and you swipe one of them, the spread stays. It
seems it closes only if there's one app in the side stage.

  spread delegates are using clipping

Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
It appears that app windows are turning on clipping when the spread is
opened. This is really inefficient graphically because it is a
transformed rectangle and so Qt falls back to stencil-based clipping.
We should avoid clipping in this case at all cost
