[Touch-packages] [Bug 1730272] Re: package systemd-sysv 234-2ubuntu12.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 2

2018-08-02 Thread era
As per last comment, removing systemd-shim solves this.

"Me too" subscribers, please review whether this solves the problem for
you also. It's fairly likely that your problem is actually different;
look for other bugs with similar symptoms.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1605861] Re: apt-key output should not be parsed (stdout is not a terminal)

2018-03-16 Thread era
apt-key was changed in Debian Stretch to warn when you attempt to do
something like

apt-key add /dev/null

or the equivalent pipeline. The manual page says

COMMANDS
   add filename
(...)
Note: Instead of using this command a keyring should be placed
directly in the /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/ directory with a descriptive name
and either "gpg" or "asc" as file extension.

So, the right thing to do is to copy the file to the right path instead of
calling apt-key add with it.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 199660] Re: CD-image naming scheme

2017-07-29 Thread era
Marking this as "Opinion" seems misdirected. If you download a number of
images to decide which flavor you like, it is cumbersome and potentially
confusing if they all have the same name. Some download managers will
overwrite the previous download, others will generate a completely
random, nondescript name. There are obvious workarounds for these
problems but the use case for fixing this issue is quite real.

Status in ubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

All the cd images are named the same, regardless of product, and
regardless of release. For example currently, kubuntu releases are all
labelled "hardy-desktop-i386" etc, with no distinction between kubunt
and ubuntu, nor minor releases. The only thing that changes is the
major release (gutsy, hardy, etc.), the CD type
(live/alternate/server), and the build type (i386, generic, amd64,
  etc).

Please use a more descriptive CD image naming scheme. Perhaps something like:
  [Distro]-[Major release]-[Minor release]-[CD type]-[Build type].iso

This would result in much more useful filenames, such as:
  kubuntu-hardy-daily080307-desktop-i386.iso, or
  xubuntu-hardy-alpha6-alternate-amd64.iso

(sorry about the package chosen for this wishlist item, I couldn't
  find anything more suitable)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1310765] Re: libarchive.so is not symlinked

2015-07-02 Thread era
Your Python ctypes wrapper for libarchive is development code, by
definition, if it requires the .so symlink. Either work around the
problem by other means, or accept that there is a dependency on
libarchive-dev.

For background, examine how other packages are doing this:

This is on a system where there are not many *-dev packages, but you can
see that the vast majority of symlinks are from *-dev packages. Apart
from gettext, the general observation would seem to be that the library
itself installs a *.so file which is not a symlink when the package name
already embeds a version number anyway.

If you would like for things to be handled differently in Debian-based
distributions, you should raise a bug against Debian policy. This is
purely academic, though; I am pretty sure you cannot convince them to
change how this works unless you can come up with a truly compelling
reason why the current policy is broken.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1429185] Re: Restart button in Additional Drivers does not restart Xubuntu

I just got hit by this as well. The bug also triggered an Apport

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-

I guess the action linked from the software-properties-gtk Restart...

looks (by quick googling) like xfce4-session-logout --reboot would be
a suitable value for XUbuntu.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1429185] Re: Restart button in Additional Drivers does not restart Xubuntu

2015-05-06 Thread era
It sure would be nice if there was a convenient portable way to find out
how to reboot the desktop session with, say, xdg-settings get desktop-
reboot-command; but, alas, there isn't.

http://portland.freedesktop.org/xdg-utils-1.1.0-rc1/scripts/xdg-settings
looks like it would not be impossible to do, but I suspect that the
hurdle is not primarily technical.

Restart button in Additional Drivers does not restart Xubuntu

Status in software-properties package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After changing a driver in Additional Drivers tab of Software

computer to complete the driver changes.') is needed and introduces a
button to restart the system. This button does not seem to do anything
  in Xubuntu 14.04.2.

Upon running software-properties-gtk through terminal and then
clicking the restart button, these lines are printed:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 51106] Re: Calculations by date are wrong

2014-12-11 Thread era
The linked Debian bug has the following comment from the maintainer:

I will update the documentation in the next version to mention that you
should never use any of the natural language features.

(I don't think that ever happened, though.)

Bug description:
  Installing ibus 1.5.5-1ubuntu1 breaks Emacs 24's control-space
keybinding. I generally have that bound to a custom lisp function,
but by default (e.g. starting with `emacs -Q`) it is bound to set-
mark-command. After doing a dist-upgrade in Trusty which installs
ibus 1.5.5-1ubuntu1, emacs no longer even sees the control-space key
chord. My guess is that ibus is consuming this event, preventing
emacs from seeing it. This is a critical regression that makes emacs
  almost unusable.

By process of elimination, I've narrowed it down to one of these 4
  binary packages.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1278569] Re: ibus breaks emacs and eclipse control-space keybinding

2014-09-15 Thread era
Based on earlier suggestions, I worked around this by changing the
keybinding to CtrlAltspace. The dialog to change this is not
entirely intuitive; you have to click the [...] button next to the
current binding.

For the record, Xubuntu 14.04 and ibus 1.5.5-1ubuntu3
