 obscure then which of both aspects does Q3 exactly refer to. For instance, I
 may contribute to both Bulgarian and English Wikipedia (Bulgarian being the
 primary one) and I may have a basic account on the English WP, while being a
 sysop on Bulgarian WP. Then, how am I supposed to answer the question? :)

 Hence, the question should either stipulate that the answer is given for
 the *primarily edited *version of Wikipedia, OR it shall allow the user to
 provide their * maximal *user access level ever reached. I think both
 answers would be helpful for the survey, or even one of them, as long as all
 users understand the question uniformly.

There shouldn't be much room for misinterpretation there. All that apply
means you shold check all the access levels you have, regardless of whether
they are on your primary project or not.

Hello again, folks.

I would like to ask again that you take a look at the translation page for
the 2011 board elections, here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Board_elections/2011/Translation

Many languages have been translated (thanks to the people who have helped
with that!), but there are still some pages that were translated in the 2009
elections that aren't done this year. As I said previously, we have tried to
keep the pages as similar as possible to the 2009 ones, so it should not be
too big an effort to translate if your language was translated in 2009.

Additionaly, candidate submissions are set to be started in three days (May
2), and that is usually the biggest bulk of the translation work. As the
candidates come in I will post here once the candidates are verified to be
eligible, so that you will get notifications on when they can be translated.
One should not start translating before they are verified, because in my
experience quite a few people submit their candidacies without actually
being eligible.

Thask you very much for your continued efforts, we really appreciate it.

After a couple of hectic days of candidacies the following four candidates
are verified as eligible, and their statements may be translated without
risk of being removed (unless they decide to remove their candidacy
themselves, of course):

* Esteban Zárate (Ezarate)
* Harel Cain (Harel)
* Marc-André Pelletier (Coren)
* Milos Rancic (Millosh)

There were several other candidacies, but as none of the users were eligible
their candidacies were removed. (And that's why candidates should be
verified before their candidacies are translated.)

* Patricio Lorente (Patricio.lorente)
* Ting Chen (Wing)
* Tom Morton (ErrantX)

We have also added templates to each candidate stating whether or not they
have been confirmed as eligible yet, so that people who don't follow this
list won't translate statements of candidates who may be removed.

It is an atomatic process, but it's not instant. Usually it takes a day or
two (a huge improvement from before, when you had to wait for a new
MediaWiki release for translations to appear...).

[Translators-l] Translation coordinators for fundraiser needed

Hi everyone,

The 2011 fundraiser is soon coming up, and we want it to be a success in
every way, including localization. You may remember Casey posting an
e-mailhttp://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/translators-l/2011-June/001716.htmlabout
a survey for translators in June. I want to thank all of you who
participated in the survey, we got many responses from people who are
interested in helping.

This year we want to build teams for the different languages, with each team
having one or two coordinators to make sure the translations are done in
time and with good quality. We have coordinators for many languages already,
but there are still some big languages that have no coordinators, and we
could need more volunteers doing that. These languages include:

   - Dutch
   - *French*
   - German
   - *Hindi*
   - Italian
   - *Japanese*
   - Portuguese
   - Spanish

These are the most important languages where coordinators are needed. For
the bold ones we don't have any coordinators yet, for the others we have
one. If you are interested in coordinating one of these languages, please
e-mail me. If you want to help coordinate another language or help out with
translation or proofreading, do the same.

[Translators-l] Fundraising 2011: New page up for translation

Hi,

I'm sorry I've been neglecting this list when announcing new pages for the
fundraiser translations. Thanks to Minh Huy Trần Nguyễn for reminding me
that I hadn't done that.

There is one new page up for translation today; a small but important one.
It is the banner texts and landing page headers. You can see the English
version here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising_2011/Banners_and_LPs/en and type
in your language code to start translating it.

There will soon be more core messages to translate as well, because we will
be using an expanded system that allows for more currencies and payment
methods. I will announce that one too when it is ready.

proofreading is always welcome of course.

[Translators-l] Special request for (European) Portuguese translation

Olá,

This is a request for a European/African Portuguese translation. The
fundraiser team will be doing a test in some African countries next week,
using the Isaac appeal. Therefore they would like to have that translated
into Portuguese. As far as I
understandhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Portuguese#Local_norms_and_norms_of_reference,
written Portuguese in Africa is usually the same as European Portuguese,
therefore it would be preferrable if this could be written in the European
standard.

I *think* he means that when you click edit it shows as protected... The
translation interface (when you click Translate this page at the top) is
available to everybody (even unregistered users).

Ah, right, Philippe is referring to [[Special:NoticeTemplate]]. Yeah, that
one can only be edited by Meta administrators, so that's why the
translations are done on that page ([[CentralNotice/Generic maintenance
notice]]). Sorry about my confusion. :o)

[Translators-l] Survey results and Meta translation plan

I just posted the results from the survey of the 2011 fundraiser
translators on Meta, for anyone who is interested:

[Translators-l] New system for notifying translators, and two new requests

Hello everybody,

The folks in the i18n team has made a great new tool for us to use, which
is live on Meta right now:
[[Special:TranslatorSignuphttps://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:TranslatorSignup]].
What it does is that it lets you be notified when there are new pages for
translations. You sign up on that page, specifying what languages you are
willing to translate into, how you would like to be notified (e-mail, Meta
talk page or talk page on another wiki), and how often you would like to be
notified. This will make it much easier to target people by language, so
when we have something that only needs to be translated into, say,
Romanian, only people who speak Romanian will get the notification about
that.

The thing we need for it now is to populate the database with translators,
so please *sign
up*https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:TranslatorSignupand help
us test it! (Feedback is, as always, very welcome.)

This also brings me to the next part – I have put up two new appeals for
translations for the next fundraiser. They are not actually new, as they
were both used in the previous fundraiser, but were put up a bit late, so
they weren't very widely translated.

You are right, moving over pages that need it is something the committee
should be involved in. Forgot to include that in the previous e-mail.

The thought here is to have several volunteers who are capable of handling
all things related to page translation with the Translate extension, who
can help Foundation staffers, Wikimania volunteers, chapters and whoever
need it when they have pages that need translation. It would only make
sense that all committee members are translation admins, and all
translation admins are committee members. Maybe it should just be called
translation administrators group or something, that is something that can
be discussed. Either way, the purpose is to assist people who are putting
up translations, as well as translators having questions.

I 100 % agree about transitioning pages to the Translate extension, though
I don't think it's a huge mess. The way it is implemented on Meta can be
improved, but a think huge mess is a bit of an overstatement.

Hi, Percy. Translation memory has now been turned on for page translation
on Meta* – it is in the green box above where you put in the translation.
That should be available for some of the pages from last year that have
been converted to the translate extension (I have seen it on a few pages
I've translated at least).

as MediaWiki.org and the Wikimania wikis.

the date the same, but change the codes if necessary.

I think they serve different purposes, Vira. The new link links to the
interface in Special:Translate, which has more features (showing
documentation, machine translations and translations in other languages),
while the down-arrow links to the message itself. Both links are useful,
but for different purposes.
