[Trisquel-users] Missing Free firware (benign?) error message

2013-04-19 Thread f3rn4nd0 . n3gr0

Hello everyone.

It is with great pleasure that I can say that (after some doubt, and a long
time waiting for this latest version, based on a LTS (more stable) version of
Ubuntu) I have definitely adopted Trisquel on my secondary (laptop) computer.
:)

I managed to get it working properly by myself, by adding the nomodeset
option on the kernel parameters (since, it wouldn't boot to the graphical
login otherwise) and, contrary to the previous (5.5) version of Trisquel, my
laptop now shuts down properly and (very) quickly.

There's only one catch - that I believe to be Trisquel-related (or specific).

When booting up, right before the graphical login shows up, I can see an
error message saying Missing Free firmware.

And, checking the /var/log/dmesg file, this are the last lines that are
written there:

[ 81.971043] 8139too :08:02.0: eth0: link down
[ 81.971340] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
[ 81.971970] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
[ 82.020036] ssb0:0: Missing Free firmware
[ 82.356103] b43-phy0: Loading OpenSource firmware version 410.31754
[ 82.356109] b43-phy0: Hardware crypto acceleration not supported by

[ 82.356112] b43-phy0: QoS not supported by firmware
[ 82.408639] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready
[ 82.408966] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready

The b43 part of the messages, relates to the built-in Broadcom BCM4318
wireless network card, that already functioned out-of-the-box in 5.5 and is
now functioning well, also, in 6.0. I suspect this error message to have
something to do with this card, but, I can use it, and I don't think I have
any problems with my wireless connection - and am using it now to post this
message.

I suspect this to be just a benign error message - of the type that appear,
a lot, just to report results, and one that can be ignored, with no problems.
But, not knowing what it means, I would like to be sure...

Also, if this is that type of error message, is there a way to silence it,
so that it doesn't show up during boot? (It's just that, with only this
exception, everything seems to be working fine - and, if possible, I would
like to setup a Trisquel system functioning in an as pretty way as
possible.) :)

Thank you, to everyone involved, for this Great distro.

I can now happily (fully) operate a laptop computer, with a WiFi connection,
using only Free Software! :)

2013-04-19 Thread holger . beetz
As I wrote I have wiped out the Trisquel installation on this PC. I will do a
test installation on my Main PC of Trisquel 6.0 to an USB stick, update and
see if Nouveau fails here also. My main PC has the same pre-requisites since
it is a dual GPU PC.

Even if switching of the onboard GPU solved the issue it is hard to
understand for my why an onboard GPU should interfere with the main PCIe GPU.

To my best knowledge most onboard GPUs get automatically diabled when you
plug in a dedicated GPU in the slot. You will find not the slightest evidence
that there is a dedicated GPU available. Neither via dmesg, Xorg.0.log or
hwinfo.

This might be different if the chipset and GPU supports parallel use for
onboard GPU and dedicated GPU. I know that ATI has some chipsets which
support this.

I want to confirm it's nothing to worry about. I have the same card.

I don't know if you can hide that message but you can remove these bits

[ 82.356109] b43-phy0: Hardware crypto acceleration not supported by firmware
[ 82.356112] b43-phy0: QoS not supported by firmware

by not asking the b43 kernel module to not use those features. It can be done
by making a file /etc/modprobe.d/b43.conf with the following content:

options b43 nohwcrypt=1 qos=0

Do you know how to enter the BIOS setup? You need to press some key during
early bootup. And then you get some nice menus that contain something,
possibly even related to this issue...

It's different key for everybody, since that's real handy, isn't it? And then
the actual contents and look are also different to keep us guessing...

[Trisquel-users] Fortune cookie dispenser

2013-04-19 Thread mikko . viinamaki
Want a silly button that dispenses (hopefully) witty adages? If you answered
that yes, then install required packages.

sudo apt-get install fortunes fortune-mod xosd-bin

Then save the attached bash script file. Review the code to see I'm not doing
anything nasty to you (I'm not, promise) and make the file executable by
chmod +x /path/to/file. Then make a launcher icon by alt+right clicking on
panel (in 5.5) or alt+meta+right clicking on panel (in 6.0) and select add -
custom launcher and point it to the script file you made executable. Add the
cookie icon.

Now, to operate this fabulous tool, clicking on the icon will produce an
adage. To make it disappear slowly double click the icon. The speed will
depend on the speed of your computer and you can change the timing by
modifying the sleep statements in the code. I wrote it like that because I
only wanted 1 button to work the whole thing and didn't want to have to click
twice to see a new fortune (i.e. simple on/off toggle).

You might like a different color or font or place it differently on screen.
If you want to tweak it, suggest you read the osd_cat manual page. Some
people might prefer the aosd-cat package to do the showing. It has entirely
different syntax so it's not a drop in replacement but has fancier options
like fadeouts and transparency.

The 64x64 indexed color icon is a derivative of this work by Lisa Williams
http://www.flickr.com/photos/lisawilliams/2395943379/sizes/o/

The script probably is way too simple to get copyright but to make sure, I
hereby place it into the public domain.

Yes, I obviously have too much spare time! Now, what did I miss or do in a
particularly funny way?

2013-04-19 Thread aepcam
Hi I'm having problems connecting to servers with Mumble. I have installed
Mumble by standar Trisquel add get applications. Sometimes I get succesfull
connecting, but almost 99% of attemps the application hangs up. I'm
suspecting certificate or ssl issues, because usually Mumble have an option
to autogenerate certificates, but using GNU it seems is not available to
select it. However I think maybe is a short of ip mac network problem. I'm
trying to renew my IP via modem restart. But can't connect. Using Mumble
primitive 1xx mode under 4wine it seems to be best way to find some info. But
the info it points is very strange because they are suggesting me to port
from a bonjour component from apple to another that is more gnu liked. The
problem here is the direct sound that I can not receive, but they can hear
me.

Well, when I recently received this old PC, first I unistalled all apple
products from windows, now I know that Trisquel is a good GNU, I'm thinking
in to remove all windows completely. But the problem I get using Mumble 4wine
is not the same, as the one I get using from gnu repos. That is more related
with this one with Brigantia.
https://trisquel.info/es/forum/mumble-wont-connect-servers-brigantia

Please if any of our hackers of honor could check it I'll be very gratefull.

Here there is an adress for a server (mumble button (add new).
dacer.homeip.net port default, your nick, no psswd needed. Avoid disturb
users, however they can help you to confirm connection.

Also I wish to know how to renew ip via terminal, any idea for a newbie.

Thanks in advance.

[Trisquel-users] Synaptic - Seamonkey

There is Iceape on Debian, but it still /recommends/ proprietary

It is a package which installed Abrowser, the patched unbranded copy

recommend proprietary software.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Synaptic - Seamonkey

2013-04-19 Thread magicbanana
As far as I know Firefox entirely is free software... but it recommends
proprietary software (plugins and extensions). Trisquel modifies Firefox to
make it not recommend proprietary software. Mozilla's trademark forces the
names and the logos of any modified version to be different from those of
Mozilla (Mozilla wants a legal leverage in case of malware-infected versions
of its software circulating under its branding).

Re: [Trisquel-users] Synaptic - Seamonkey

2013-04-19 Thread jason

Hey Magic Banana,

That's not the only thing that Mozilla's trademark policy says. It also says
that, as long as the Mozilla trademark stuff is included, it must be
distributed without charge.

The requirement to rename a modified version is fine, according to the FSF,
but Mozilla's trademark policy goes too far, according to the FSF, making
Mozilla-branded software non-free through their trademark policy -- Not the
software license:

Unfortunately, such a restriction in a trademark license does make the
software nonfree. As we've said in the past, a requirement that you rename
the software when you modify it is fine -- but a requirement that you rename
it before you distribute it commercially goes too far. Changing the name of a
program should be straightforward enough for anybody who modifies the
software (and if it isn't, that can be problematic too); the same isn't true
for people who simply want to distribute it.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Synaptic - Seamonkey

2013-04-19 Thread jason

It's not enough to ask if you have the four freedoms or not. There's more.

To quote from the Free Software Definition: Free software does not mean
noncommercial. A free program must be available for commercial use,
commercial development, and commercial distribution. Commercial development
of free software is no longer unusual; such free commercial software is very
important. You may have paid money to get copies of free software, or you may
have obtained copies at no charge. But regardless of how you got your copies,
you always have the freedom to copy and change the software, even to sell
copies.

Therefore, in order for a program to be free, the user must be able to
exercise all four freedoms on a commercial or non-commercial basis.

Mozilla's trademark policy forbids the user from exercising freedom #2 on a
commercial basis, rendering the Mozilla-branded version of the software
non-free.

Of course, someone can always rebrand the software and get out of this (like
Trisquel does) and anyone that is in possession of this modified version does
have a free program but the Mozilla-branded version still has that problem.

of the booths, and the shrieking, rattling toys that the children carried.
It was a red bottom shoes glorious spectacle, but not a spectacle for the
leading families. Miss Chetwynd's school was closed, so that the daughters of
leading families might remain in seclusion till the worst was over. The
Baineses ignored the Wakes in every possible way, choosing that week to have
a show of mourning goods in the left- hand Red Bottom Shoes - Red Bottom

pretext. Therefore the dazzling social success of the elephant, which was
quite easily drawing Mrs. Baines into the vortex, cannot imaginably be
over-estimated.

not Red Bottom Shoes - Red Bottom Shoes For Sale Mall the modern finicking

vast oblong tent, christian louboutin outlet whose raging beasts roared and
growled day and night. And spreading away from this supreme attraction, right
up through the market-place past the Town Hall to Duck Bank, Duck Square and
the waste land called the 'playground' were hundreds of booths with banners
displaying all the red bottom shoes delights of the horrible. For Sophia Mr.
Critchlow had always been the personification of malignity and malevolence,
and now these qualities in him christian louboutin sale made him, to her,
almost obscene. Her pride brought up tremendous reinforcements, and she
approached the bed. Is he dead? she asked in a quiet tone. (Somewhere
within a voice was whispering, So his name is Scales.) Don't I tell you
he's dead? Pail on the stairs! This mild exclamation came from the
passage. Mrs. Baines, misliking the crowds abroad, had returned alone; she
had left Constance in coach outlet online charge of Mr. Povey. Coming into
her house by the shop and showroom, she had first noted the phenomenon of the
pail- -proof of her theory of Maggie's incurable untidiness.

You make me almost glad that your father died even as he did. He has, at any

had magnanimously never mentioned the subject to Sophia, knew exactly how the
old man had died. www.vchristianlouboutinoutlet2013.com Sophia escaped from
