Re: [Trisquel-users] Download Parted magic
I've used Ultimate Boot CD with great results in the past. It includes Parted Magic although I'm not sure what version. Great thing about it is 1 CD handles everything; GNU/Linux, Windows, DOS. The programs on it are a mix of freeware and GPL licensed software. I'd prefer all GPL software, but I make an exception for this CD, it's just too useful to ignore: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Download Parted magic
Hi Pascal. I was dealing the same issue a week before or so, when I finally found some time to make a full hard-drive backup with Clonezilla, using my Parted Magic boot CD, but since this distribution is periodically upgraded, I wanted to burn a new live ISO before I will do the backup. Unfortunately, the time when I burned my last copy of Parted Magic on a CD, was also the last time it was offered as a free download. According to a Phoronix reader, who's been talked with the author, Patrick Verner, the funding went this way because of the financial problems that occured in the author's family, when his wife lost job, and he wanted to be able to work on the project as a full-time job, but for that he needs to meet the $1200 per month revenue limit, and that wasn't always met through donations. I encourage you, and everyone here to make the $5 dollar payment for this perfectly fine distro, full of free software goodness, but if you, for some reason, are unable to make payments using PayPal (like me), or just want to test drive the older releases, I found this blog page that helped me, and where you/anyone can download the latest free, as in free beer version, that was previously released: http://mrsebe.bplaced.net/blog/wordpress/?p=80 Paying for free software is good thing as long as all the donated money gets to the project, and I would like to see more of them taking the same route, since in my opinion, this is the way the majority of free software projects should go. The full story about the transition can be found here: [Phoronix] Parted Magic Is Still Free

Re: [Trisquel-users] Where is System Settings Network ?
I found the cause of the problem. Installing the gnome-control-center-data package found in the Ubuntu repositories makes System Settings-Network available, but makes others like System Settings-Backup unavailable. It probably has something to do with the categorization of the settings, as the Ubuntu version has some settings listed under Hardware, and the Trisquel version categorizes settings under Personal and System only.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Download Parted magic
I fully agree. That would go a long way to dispelling the myth that developers can't make a living working on free software. Personally I had much rather pay for a free program and help a developer than get a proprietary program for no cost.

[Trisquel-users] Seeking for a backup tool
To be short, I am searching for an application with a user interface, that supports updating/refreshing readily available partition image clones, so that I does not need to create a full drive backup every-time I make a backup. I already used Clonezilla to backup two internal notebook hard drives with success, but AFAIK it does not support this feature. Any suggetions?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Acer C7 Chromebook updates
These are the exact information required here, many thanks! If these custom BIOS images implements SeaBIOS payload to the Acer C7 line of chromebooks, while give an option to get rid of the OS verification screen at startup, we have a killer notebook (not only) for Trisquel users. From what I quickly read, and seen in the YouTube video posted by prvteprts, it looks like that's the case.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Do you use Trisquel, or Trisquel Mini?
I can't remember if it came with Gnash already pre-installed or not. But, I can watch flash videos on Abrowser, with the Gnash plug-in, in such computer running Mini.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Do you use Trisquel, or Trisquel Mini?
Well, the main difference is the DE, so I guess I use neither. I installed from the regular GNOME Fallback liveCD, but I use GNOME Shell.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Seeking for a backup tool
What would be the source to update / refresh partion backups ? I do not exactly know a GUI tool but in the end this could boil down to mounting a dd image file via loop back option (similar to an ISO), apply the changes from the source to the dump via rsync and then unmount the dd image. I am not aware of any backup solution which allows to do incremental backups to a full dump. Depending on your knowledge I would go for Python and some toolkit (e.g. GTK) or may be Gambas / Lazarus plus some shell commands. Gambas if you are more the Basic kind of guy or Lazarus if you worked with Delpi / Opbject pascal so far. It is really easiy to hack together a simplistic GUI in the form editors today.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Google brain implants. What do people think?
Brain implants should never be compulsory.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Seeking for a backup tool
The source would be the first full backup. What I basically want is to eliminate the need for making complete data backups, when I do make a backup, say, once in a month. Since the majority of data will stay the same, it makes no sense to wait hours, just to have a difference of few megabytes (mainly documents, and scripts) saved. It does not need to have a GUI, an aptitude like UI is sufficient, but I really don't want to play with Terminal commands, since I have very bad experience with this. Since I am busy working on other projects (mainly with moving to cloud), and because I require a tool that I can rely and depend upon, working on a new GUI for some command-line tools is not an option for me.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Do you use Trisquel, or Trisquel Mini?
Lightweight OS's are becoming pretty popular, from what I know. (from DistroWatch, in the beginning of 2011:) Looking through the tables, an interesting thing is the rise of distributions that use the lightweight, but full-featured LXDE desktop or the Openbox window manager. As an example, Lubuntu now comfortably beats Kubuntu in terms of page hits, while CrunchBang Linux, a lightweight distribution with Openbox is still in the top 25 even though it failed to produce a stable release for well over a year. Many other distributions started offering LXDE-based editions of their products, further contributing to the dramatic rise in popularity of this relatively new desktop environment. I suppose many people still have old computers around, that they can use, and also make the same type of reasoning as I do, even for new computers, and just decide that they don't need all the extra fancy features that other, more heavyweight, OS's have. I've even installed Xfce on a laptop bought only 2 years ago, because there's simply no need for anything more than that, for everyone who uses such computer, to do everything they need, and it's a much more simple DE to use than GNOME, with the shell and all that, that it could run, with no problems.

I've heard good things about rdiff-backup[1]. Citing from their website: rdiff-backup backs up one directory to another, possibly over a network. The target directory ends up a copy of the source directory, but extra reverse diffs are stored in a special subdirectory of that target directory, so you can still recover files lost some time ago. The idea is to combine the best features of a mirror and an incremental backup. rdiff-backup also preserves subdirectories, hard links, dev files, permissions, uid/gid ownership, modification times, extended attributes, acls, and resource forks. Also, rdiff-backup can operate in a bandwidth efficient manner over a pipe, like rsync. Thus you can use rdiff-backup and ssh to securely back a hard drive up to a remote location, and only the differences will be transmitted. Finally, rdiff-backup is easy to use and settings have sensical defaults. I usually use rsync, but I wanted to git rdiff-backup a go. Haven't done it yet because of lack of time. -- Stefano [1] http://www.nongnu.org/rdiff-backup/

Re: [Trisquel-users] Secret 3G Intel Chip Gives Snoops Backdoor PC Access
Such as was noted by the service provider above, This technology is built into the processor, so this will be activated even before the laptops startup and *will work even without internet* as it is hardwired and it is completely tamper proof. I don't know what that means, but they have stated it clearly. Perhaps it is a radio signal of some kind which gives simple switch like yes/no or on/off instructions, not the real internet, not a cell phone network, not a network in the sense of a standard computer network. I haven't had time to review all the services of the providers intel has listed. I know they don't all offer exactly the same services. From a brief overview, it was startling to see how much they can do. And that they've been doing it for years.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Google brain implants. What do people think?
Until recently I would have thought that publicly available code would be best for such devices too. This link from lembas https://www.blackhat.com/html/bh-us-12/bh-us-12-archives.html#Brossard makes me wonder as the exploit described was quickly built upon coreboot. The openness of the code maybe helped a little too much?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Seeking for a backup tool
I don't have any network setup (just two laptops), and uploading to some cloud-storage service will be a way stupid idea. I am mainly satisfied with Clonezilla, just want an added functionality similar to the one used in Deja Dup, that will backup only the differences over the existing first backup. Since Clonezilla uses (gzip) compression algorithm to compress the saved data, updating is only possible through differences.
[Trisquel-users] Antwort: Seeking for a backup tool
You are still quite unprecise what the source for the backup is... Your mounted home dir ? Do you copy your full home partition as dd image and want to add modified files ? All this is important since a full partition backup is a completely different beast than a incremental filesystem backup. There is a backup functionality integrated into vanilla Ubuntu. Unfortunately I do not remember the name and have no clue if it is available under Trisquel.

Re: [Trisquel-users] How to Install Trisquel 6.0
When upgrading to a new release, I've always done as suggested in #6. Allow the installer to format '/'; mount your old '/home' (do not allow formatting), and mount the old swap. When your new system comes up, you'll see all your users' files. Be sure to use the same username, in the new install, as you have in 5.5.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Seeking for a backup tool
I try to explain this as simple as possible. I have a laptop, with Trisquel installed, including my data files, like documents, multimedia files, various downloads, etc.. The data is saved on the internal HDD, which is assembled in the laptop. Now, I have an external 1TB HDD, that I can connect through USB 3.0 port (ExpressCard slot). I also have a Parted Magic bootable CD with Clonezilla on it. I want to make a full backup of the internal HDD, including every partition, MBR, etc. to the external drive, so I can later restore the clone of the disk in case of a HDD failure, and continue to use the laptop, like nothing have happened. The problem is, that I want to do this regularly, to ensure that my new data files will not be lost if something happen. Making a full 128-256GB images every month, also for multiple computers is not an efficient way of doing this.
[Trisquel-users] Antwort: Seeking for a backup tool
Hm, I would choose a different strategy. Put your home dir on a dedicated partition. Then backup the system partition(s) like / with a full backup. For your changeable stuff you could do filebased incremental backup like with rdiff-backup or rsnapshot. To my best knowledge only the bootloader is the one thing you need to make a binary backup. The rest of your directory tree could be backed up at file base.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Secret 3G Intel Chip Gives Snoops Backdoor PC Access
MORE Called absolute persistence technology by one of the providers, they say they can send an SMS for immediate lock functionality. http://www.absolute.com/en/partners/alliances/intel With Intel Anti-Theft, Absolute customers can: Trigger an Intel Anti-Theft lock using real-time technology within the Absolute Customer Center, sending an SMS message to the computer and invoking the Intel Anti-Theft lock almost immediately. To take advantage of this SMS-only immediate lock functionality, you will require Intel Anti-Theft supported hardware (Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 notebooks). How it works Hardware The first step is hardware-based and occurs before the device is even built. Through our partnership with computer manufacturers, the persistence module is built into the firmware of desktop, laptop, tablet, and smart phone devices around the world. Each device leaves the factory with the persistence module in place, waiting to be activated. http://www.absolute.com/en/partners/bios-compatibility (Note that even the 7 year old Lenovo X series, considered to be close to free computers, are BIOS and firmware capable for the use of this system.) Software This occurs when the software agent is installed. It’s the step that turns everything on and it’s through this agent that device information is transmitted to IT so they can remotely track, manage, and secure devices. Persistence Even if the firmware is flashed, the device is re-imaged, the hard drive is replaced, or if a tablet or smart phone is wiped clean to factory settings, the agent will simply reinstall and continue to provide hundreds of data points for each device. And it’s a two-way street. The same connection can be used by IT to convey a variety of remote security and management commands back to the device. We’ve provided forensic evidence to close to 5,000 law enforcement members around the world, allowing them to recover over 28,000 stolen devices and put countless criminals behind bars http://www.absolute.com/en/resources/whitepapers/absolute-persistence-technology So, this technology is in the hardware. In a lot of hardware. It needs software to activate it. Many chips now allow installing software remotely even if the computer is powered down, it can be turned on and updated. Not saying this is happening all over the place, it just feels quite out of control to be the owner of a device and be unable to have complete say over what is to be done with it. If alerted to the intent for some control to be added over the machine, that would be one thing. To have the capability to alter the machine without the owner knowing, is not something I wish to pay for or own. These controls make sense in a corporate or government setting, but for personal use, how can one be sure these features are permanently turned off or rendered useless? These are known backdoors. What if we can't be certain they are closed? What about unknown backdoors. It doesn't end.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Seeking for a backup tool
I'd agree with Darksouls approach. This method would also mean quicker and less corrupted backups, with smaller file sizes.

Either Alt+Right click on the panel (if Metacity is your window manager) or Alt+Windows key+Right click on the panel (if Compiz is your window manager). That will give you a contextual menu that includes an entry to add elements to the panel. Click on: + Add to panel.. Choose (Click on) 'Custum Application Launcher'. Next on '+ Add'. Re: [Trisquel-users] Secret 3G Intel Chip Gives Snoops Backdoor PC Access
Yes- AMD has implemented similar questionable technology. I haven't read up on either terribly though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Million dollar question concerning the hardware we use
I'm not saying that it couldn't be done technically. It would be an awful way of implementing it though. It would be better to do it as they appear to have done it. VIA a GSM module using SMS or TCP/IP over wifi/ethernet. The TCIP/IP thing wouldn't be instant. You would have to connect to the Internet first. The later the government could use against anybody (from a spying perspective). The GSM module though requires a bit more. GSM modules require an antenna and are pretty big still. You'd have a hard time hiding one of those I think in a CPU. However it could be used alongside a CPU. I'd be curious how one might go about hiding a mini GSM inside a CPU and still get a sufficiently significant connection to the cellular networks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Secret 3G Intel Chip Gives Snoops Backdoor PC Access
Answering my own question... http://www.eteknix.com/expert-says-nsa-have-backdoors-built-into-intel-and-amd-processors/ All the articles seem to reference the same Australian Financial Review story from July of this year. http://www.afr.com/p/technology/intel_chips_could_be_nsa_key_to_ymrhS1HS1633gCWKt5tFtI And a denial from AMD here. http://fudzilla.com/home/item/32120-amd-denies-existence-of-nsa-backdoor One is tempted to think well, they would say that, wouldn't they? No one's going to admit to this and see Government and/or military supply contracts lost. I've spent the last 10+ years loving IT, spending every spare moment in front of my pc. Most of them using Linux. I was happy, believing that if we could just get enough people interested in Open Source that the world could be made a better and safer place, free from the tyranny of Corporate nonsense and spying. Over the last few days, as a result of the various links on this and other threads here, everything has changed. Now it all seems nasty and suspicious. I used to think I cannot help someone to be happy with Windows or Apple, without at least warning them of the loss of privacy and control they bring with them but now I'm wondering if the message should be if you have a computer, regardless of what you run on it, you're unable to rely on being secure or safe. What if NSA employees are masquerading as OpenSource contributors? What if they are maintainers for various bits of code? If code comes from a trusted person is it really reviewed by others for compromise or is it accepted as trusted and included without being checked? We had a story break here in the UK a few months ago, whereby it transpired that undercover Police had infiltrated various political movements, to the extent of having sexual relationships and even children with women in the movements. If that is the level of abuse of trust that is being carried out in order to monitor dissidents, then it's highly likely that some trusted contributors are indeed working for the security agencies, with hidden agendas. Once stories like that become known it naturally and presumably intentionally, introduces mistrust into every such movement, as people begin to look at people they thought were trusted and wonder are you a Policeman too? Such mistrust tears movements apart, again, presumably quite deliberately. Divide and rule. So it comes down to this, for me - I'm not involved in anything that could be described as genuine terrorism. I don't call for the deaths of politicians or bankers. I speak out as and when it seems necessary, always and only in defence of the weak and the poor. If the day should come when they're arresting people for doing that then that's no world I wish to live in and I'll take the consequences without shame. Or put another way f*ck 'em, I'm doing no wrong and I'm not going to let a bit of fear (perhaps unfounded and introduced by those who wish to destroy the OSS movement) stop me from thus speaking out.
