Re: [Trisquel-users] /home does not mount after suspend
You could also write custom suspend scripts to unmount before suspending and mount after. Dunno if the fact we're talking about /home makes any difference.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libusb version
The reason is simply Trisquel 6 is based on Ubuntu 12.04. You can see if upstream versions are still free software and if the present libraries are new enough to run them. (Note that if you manually install something outside the package manager, it will not get automatic updates.)

[Trisquel-users] Touchpad click not working with other DE than gnome
Using the gnome shell I can push the touchpad in order to perform a click with the mouse. This doesn't work when I'm using awesome or i3. I read the synaptics manual and as far as I understood I'm supposed to write the options into the xorg.conf. I'm not quite sure but I think the xorg.conf is no longer used or gets created automatically or something like that. Whenever I tried to change something in this file on newer systems the result was very bad so I'd rather not do it. But how can I fix this problem without xorg.conf?
[Trisquel-users] How to make nitrogen load a wallpaper on startup silently
Hey guys, I'm experimenting at the moment with some minimalistic tiling window manager such as i3 or awesome. In order to have a nice look I have to start nitrogen after I booted the pc and set the wallpaper manually, and that's pretty annoying. As far as I read in the manual nitrogen will set the wallpaper silently if I use nitrogen --restore, but I have to write this command in a file which loads commands on startup. Which file is this a) for normal user commands b) for root user commands? Thanks for your help.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to make nitrogen load a wallpaper on startup silently
Try either .bash_profile or .bashrc
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to make nitrogen load a wallpaper on startup silently
For any command that needs to be run as root, you'll need to fiddle with the scripts in /etc/rc2.d/ (as the default runlevel is 2) It's quite complex but you can get a dirty hack going...
Re: [Trisquel-users] ARM support
450MHz will do just fine with software less sucky. Such software ain't that well known, though, finding and using them requires some dedication and willing to take an extra mile. I have a 500MHz @ 192MB which will run netsurf / midori (web), sylpheed (mail) and canto (feeds) very happily. Programming C / ncurses / python with geany, pictures with geeqie, calendar with orage. pdf's with xpdf or mupdf, Desktop with dwm, jwm, fluxbox or iceWM works great without all the clutter. It is swappy though, so some kind of external storage (nfs/nbd?) for disk+swap would be handy. Flash is out of the game, and so is most of the javast. One could play flash with vlc / mplayer once the file is local, though I haven't found a good solution yet.

[Trisquel-users] Help me get rid of the last proprietary component of my OS, the b43 driver
Greetings Ladies and gentlemen, I use Dabian as my primary OS and I'm sick of the Brodcom wifi card, It is a painful limitation. I was trying to make experiments and tryed to change the debian kernel and every time I switch the core, I have to reinstall and load the b43 f** driver again and again. It caused me a lot of problems not only in Debian but in every distribution I tried. I had enough, no more please. I was also removing propietary components one by one and replacing them for the Libre alternatives and now b43 is the only user subjugating software that I have. It is a pain in the ass. I know the solution, buying and usb wifi adapter from thinkpenguin... and here comes the question: Which one I buy? There are some models and sadly I don't apreciate the difference between them. Would you mind to help me select the best option for me? I'm using a laptop. Thank you.

I use this one, and it works perfectly.

I replaced my laptop's Intel Wireless card (which requires non-free firmware) by the following card, purchased on eBay for 10 bucks: Atheros AR5B95 AR9285 802.11B/G/N Half Mini PCI-E Card Works like a charm with Trisquel 6.

THank you. Will it work like the integrated cards?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help me get rid of the last proprietary component of my OS, the b43 driver
I didn't consider that option because I thought you could not change the hardware components iof a laptop. I'm a complete newbie in hardware manipulation so: Could you provide me with a link or recommend me a book that would help me teaching myself to assemble and desassemble laptops? Thank you. I will compare prices and performance of the options you gave me before making a choice. Thank you again.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help me get rid of the last proprietary component of my OS, the b43 driver
The main differences are how fast they are, how big they are, what their range is, what version of Linux they need, and what they plug into. Some of the newer ones can work with old versions of Linux, but because the necessary firmware was proprietary until recently, you need to add on the firmware if you're using a deblobbed kernel. If you want the least hassle, my guess is the Wireless G USB adapter would be your best bet. It's the slowest out of the USB adapters; whether this matters depends on how fast your Internet connection is, of course. TP says all the other USB adapters currently need additional free firmware to work on Debian 7, Trisquel 6, and a few others. For non-USB ones, you need to figure out what kind of slot you have and get an appropriate one, choosing based on what size, speed, and range you need. There's a guide for the slots on the ThinkPenguin site here: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/mini-pci-mini-pci-e-mini-pci-e-half-height-guide-laptop-wifi-cards You need to watch out for digital restriction mechanisms as well; apparently some computers use restriction mechanisms to prevent you from using approved cards. The ThinkPenguin site says you can return or exchange the adapter if it turns out your computer is defective by design, so you can try it with no worries and get a USB adapter instead if it turns out it doesn't work; but if you don't want to deal with that, you might want to just get a USB adapter.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help me get rid of the last proprietary component of my OS, the b43 driver
The last time I checked, it isn't the driver that isn't free (b43), it's the firmware. I heard that it is possible to use the openfwwf firmware with the b43 driver. It's available in the trisquel repositories: http://packages.trisquel.info/toutatis/openfwwf You can get more info here: http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#firmware http://www.ing.unibs.it/~openfwwf/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Touchpad click not working with other DE than gnome
Another puzzle solved: The command synaptikscfg init does the job. I really don't know why there's a program called synclient mentioned in the man page of synaptics (with c) but also a program called synaptiks with k and the according synaptikscfg. All of them seem to deal with touchpad functionality and have very similar names. Pretty confusing.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Disabling services that are controlled by upstart jobs?
The way you're meant to disable Upstart services is like this, in a terminal: echo manual | sudo tee /etc/init/ssh.override Basically, to disable a service with a config file named ssh.conf, you make a plain text file named ssh.override with the word manual. This is what I do when I install Trisquel: echo manual | sudo tee /etc/init/cups.override echo manual | sudo tee /etc/init/smbd.override echo manual | sudo tee /etc/init/ssh.override sudo stop cups sudo stop smbd sudo stop ssh

Where am I supposed to enter that command? Pressing c in GRUB requires the username and password, and on the live CD (from which I'm posting this) I get permission denied for that file.

Thanks; I have two ways to do this without removing any init files. I may want to restore this setup to its factory default.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help me get rid of the last proprietary component of my OS, the b43 driver
On many laptops you can change the WiFi card. On some you can't because of digital restrictions or because the original WiFi is non-typical. What I would do is try and see if it works. I've changed the WiFi of 4 different laptops and it worked for all of them. I buy WiFi cards from computer repair shops, because they always have second hand WiFi cards. For two of the laptops, I went with them to the repair shop. I disassembled the laptop there and tried their second hand WiFi cards before buying. I also gave them the original WiFi, so they sold me the new WiFi very cheap for around $3. About the disassembling. You don't need a book, if there are even such books. It's not that complicated. Usually, all you need is a small Phillips screw driver.[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#Phillips Then unplug your laptop from any electricity, remove the battery and start unscrewing screws, usually starting from the bottom of the laptop. Remember where the unscrewed screws were from, since there may be many of them! :) I have a way of organizing the screws so I can remember where they were from. Different laptops are disassembled in different ways. Watch some videos of people disassembling laptops. There may be even disassembling videos of your laptop model. Sometimes you can find an official disassembling guide for you laptop. If you are worried about breaking you laptop, try disassembling a cheaper or non-working laptop. It is possible to break you laptop, if you're not careful. :) Also, if you want try a WiFi card in a shop like me, make sure you can disassemble and test the new WiFi fast, so you don't waste people's time and get in the way. Figure out how to disassemble the laptop at home, before going to the shop. :)

[Trisquel-users] Re : Help me get rid of the last proprietary component of my OS, the b43 driver
As far as I understand, there is no need to update the kernel anymore. It used to be useful to get this adapter working on the latest Trisquel. However, the package open-ath9k-htc-firmware has made into its repository. trisquel-base even depends on it. So if you still have that meta-package installed (the case unless you removed some system package that were installed by default), open-ath9k-htc-firmware already is installed, waiting for the adapter to be plugged. :-) Opting for an internal card, hoping the laptop is not defective by design (what is the brand?), the half-height mini PCIe model is the answer. It is the smallest (but would work in a laptop that accepts a full-height mini PCIe card), the fastest (that basically the N means!) and the cheapest one! Mini PCI (without the e) are for pretty old laptops (before 2005).
[Trisquel-users] Re : Touchpad click not working with other DE than gnome
If you only add the sections where you do not want the defaults (and let Xorg use its defaults for the rest), there should not be any issue. If /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not exist on your system, you can create it. You obviously need the administrative privileges to create/modify that file. For instance, using the GEdit text editor: $ gksu gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf You may find this documentation useful.
[Trisquel-users] Display Resolution Problem on Toshiba Sat L830
Display Resolution Problem on Toshiba Sat L830 Guys, I'm new to Linux non-technical. After looking into alternatives to MicroNSF/Windoze I decided on Trisquel on principle. I fully realise that, based on popular Ubuntu, its probably already back-doored. I managed to get my head around Virtual Box ran Trisquel in it for a few months to familiarise myself only fully installed recently. I had no idea certain things might not work with a full install. Wireless is now ok. I have a 13” Toshiba Sat L830, with 16:9 screen, which Trisq can't seem to connect to. The default 4:3 is unworkable – everything elongated. Also, Brightness settings work, but screen is not as bright, on max setting, as before. Is there an easy way around this? Alternatively, if the solution is very technical, could someone detail the process for me so, if stuck, I could at least take the info to a computer shop get it done . . . Any help appreciated. I tried Linux Mint with no problems + screen was brighter, however, I would much prefer to use FSF endorsed Trisquel support those I consider to be good guys. Would be great if Trisquel could get to the point where it worked more seemlessly out of the box for non-technical users like myself. This would mean a much greater uptake, more donations and, ultimately, far more demand for non-compromised hardware.

If there is a backdoor in Ubuntu, it very probably is implemented in the proprietary software that distribution includes. Trisquel is 100% free software. You can read all the code. And everybody else can. Nothing proprietary is imported from Ubuntu: only free software. Aren't there any other resolution proposed in the Display utility you can find in the System Settings? Re: [Trisquel-users] Help me get rid of the last proprietary component of my OS, the b43 driver
If you decide to replace the internal WiFi, take a lot of patience and do NOT use the force. Sometimes you can find a hardware maintenance manual for your laptop, giving you step-by-step instructions for taking it apart (and replacing the WiFi). If you cant, well, some laptops have it placed under one lid on the bottom, but some have it placed inside, somewhere under the keyboard or handrest. If you don't know what youre doing but are willing to experience, I suggest take too many pictures of each step, so you can put it back together again - and again, don't use the force.
