Re: [Trisquel-users] F-Droid Appstore criticizes application for using non-free network service
Explain why the use of Telegram is any different from using a forum on the internet when it comes to privacy. So far, I've just heard some populist statements about the topic but nobody seems to think about the logical implications that arise if we consider a system like telegram not private enough.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Laptop battery.
It works for Intel, AMD, ARM and UltraSPARC processors. [1] However, powertop isn't a power management tool but merely an analysis tool. Any recommended settings you apply with powertop get lost upon the next system reboot. To make powertop's settings permanent you need a tool like TLP (or Laptop Mode Tools). Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel should have a git system for the community. Hear me out.
I don't think you fully understand. I'm not talking about the main Git repo where people can contribute code for the main project. Something else.
Re: [Trisquel-users] F-Droid Appstore criticizes application for using non-free network service
nobody seems to think about the logical implications that arise if we consider a system like telegram not private enough. Of course people have. All of the usual issues with centralized services come up. It's the whole man in the middle thing. The Telegram people know who has who added to their contacts, how often the communicate, what is said (at least when using ordinary chats. They claim that they can't when Secret Chats are used but, since the backend source code is not available this cannot be independently confirmed or denied that end-to-end encryption is actually used and that they have no way to read them.) But even if they could, metadata is still metadata and valuable in and of itself. All of the issues with it being a centralized service alleviated by making it free software so that people can run their own instance privately and keep that data to themselves. And if you want more information on why decentralizing things is important, Eben Moglen gave a great talk on that very issue: http://www.softwarefreedom.org/news/2010/feb/08/audio-and-video-eben-moglens-talk-freedom-cloud-no/ I also have a blog which mentioned avoiding centralized services in part of it: http://jxself.org/avoiding-surveillance.shtml These are all issues to do with privacy, though, not software freedom. Of course, people are free to do whatever they want. The whole point I'm trying to make is that there are issues to consider here, when some in this thread were totally dismissing the matter of where the backend lived, who ran it, etc. as being totally unimportant and irrelevant things (Why should I care etc.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] F-Droid Appstore criticizes application for using non-free network service
They claim that they can't when Secret Chats are used but, since the backend source code is not available this cannot be independently confirmed or denied that end-to-end encryption is actually used and that they have no way to read them. That's just wrong. The data gets encrypted by the free client program so the encryption mechanism is completely transparent. You can read the code to verify that there is no additional information which gets transmitted to the server and allows it to decrypt the message. I also have a blog which mentioned avoiding centralized services I agree that centrilized services *are* a problem, but I'm more concerned about the big companies like google or apple. Using telegram with encryption is a far inferiour problem than using gmail or youtube.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Jolla - the new freedom respecting tablet pc?
I have some hope for the Jolla tablet, it might eventually end up as the first device of this type I might tinker with. My communication compromise: OTR with Jabber/XMPP account + Firefox OS smartphone without SIM card, and Mozilla Hello/Loop services over WiFi through WebRTC.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recent problem with youtube
Hm, that's odd. It seems I can access that video with ViewTube just fine, but only if the YouTube HTML5 Video Player extension is disabled. Also, UnPlug fails to fetch a good link from that page (the links it finds all fail), and VLC isn't able to stream that video, either.

mtl...@member.fsf.org wrote: I couldn't see/hear the following song for instance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PEUEbpoe_w Consider installing youtube-dl. It's in the Trisquel repos. Or visit https://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/ to get a copy you can easily update outside of the repos by running ./youtube-dl --update on the command line. With youtube-dl (and comparable Firefox addons) you'll end up with a copy of the video you can store and watch without being tracked.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librem 15: A Free/Libre and Open Source Laptop That Respects Your Essential Freedoms
on librem15's website is says - hardware components, like the HD or SSD, that are flashable, and therefore upgradeable, but that currently run firmware are all hdds like that? You cannot get a hdd, that is open source or free software? I can read that part of the bios and initialization software is open source. Why do they release parts of the software? What can happen to intel if they release all software? Can other manufacturers use it to built mainboards? Intel wants to sell hardware, then why don't they release all software? It is not to keep gnulinux out, because it can be installed if in combination with non open source software? And if it is a matter of making obstacles for gnulinux, then because microsoft and apple has the mass to achieve that?
Re: [Trisquel-users] F-Droid Appstore criticizes application for using non-free network service
Using telegram with encryption is a far inferiour problem than using gmail or youtube. Then you recognize the use of telegram as a problem? Then even if it's the lesser evil you should avoid it, because at the end of the day you still have a problem.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is there a system-wide http proxy set in Trisquel 7?
Having updated as suggested, I tried again, and the login works; Thanks! Why don't we keep these settings at factory defaults?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is there a system-wide http proxy set in Trisquel 7?
Factory defaults are not always the best for privacy.
[Trisquel-users] a good webpage on security/privacy
I remember a few years ago when I first started taking the issue seriously I had to collect bits of info on a large variety of websites - each aspect I wanted to learn brought me on different webpages. Most certainly the website that helped me a lot was eff.org. Those guys are great and their info is great! But many things related to the topic(sec/priv) I had to search around and around the great maine.. I really would have enjoyed this webpage back then https://securityinabox.org/ A lot of tips are reunited there on a single page and, though it is basic knowledge for me (now) for a newb it is a great source of information. I found it a couple of days ago (I think it was linked on eff) and wonder how is it that I never stumbled upon it before. Anyway if you are into sec, and don't already know plenty about it, it might help you! cheers
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recent problem with youtube
xul-ext-youtube-html5-video-player replaces YouTube video player by Firefox native video player. This will break any extension that depends on YouTube video player and its JavaScript API or that changes some parts of YouTube page DOM tree.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recent problem with youtube
You may need to go to www.youtube.com/html5 to enable HTML5 playback. Alternatives include using Minitube or MPS-YT.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Toutatis Brightness control
Thank you Lembas and all. I'm done with it. I'm more than satisfied with what I have now, and don't have much time to play further with this, especially when I have so many other technical problems! Cheers
Re: [Trisquel-users] a good webpage on security/privacy
This website is terrible. I would strongly advise against linking to it. It seems to focus on Windows, and more importantly, it recommends multiple proprietary programs: - A proprietary anti-virus program - A proprietary spyware removal program - A proprietary security suite - A proprietary filesystem encryption program - A proprietary backup program - A proprietary data recovery program - Two proprietary Firefox add-ons Heck, they seem to recommend more proprietary software than libre software!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recent problem with youtube
I can see it as any other, perhaps was banned in your country.
[Trisquel-users] problems with choosing a forbidden password
The password I chose for this account was not allowed by the rules that pop up in a box when a forbidden password is typed. Nevertheless, I could save my choice. However, when I tried to log in, neither the new password nor the old one was accepted. When all the characters I type are spaces, I am told to enter a password instead of that the password is wrong. This happens if my chosen albeit forbidden password consists only of space characters, too. When the password I typed to log in was not accepted, I was asked if I forgot my password. I clicked on that, logged in via the link sent to my e-mail, and chose a password that was allowed by the rules. I do not have any problem with logging in anymore.
Re: [Trisquel-users] F-Droid Appstore criticizes application for using non-free network service
a far inferiour problem There is actually no difference: it has the design of a data collection silo which, as mentioned in the blog post, is one of the two things that made mass surveillance possible. Using third party services that sell them out doesn't just refer to cases where the service provider is doing that but is generic enough to refer to any time where that happens. With the current design they're just one letter away from the top five intelligence agencies having full access to their system. The data of fifty million people and an additional one million each week present a pretty attractive target so who knows - maybe they've already received that letter. That's the problem: Under current laws companies are forbidden from saying that they've received one and thousands are issued each year. A notable company is fighting that but that's really fighting the symptom and not the problem. The real problem is using centralized services. Actually, the real problem is the spying which people need to fight with their legislature to address, but a second prong of attack can be applied by not using such things in the first place.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel should have a git system for the community. Hear me out.
I totally understand it, and stand by the original statement.
Re: [Trisquel-users] non-compliance with account's language setting
To ensure proper handling and disposition, this would probably be better reported as a bug instead of on the forums. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Abroswer Start Page Search Bar
That's about the search box up near the address bar. I'm talking about the boxes on about:home and about:abrowser.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Abroswer Start Page Search Bar
I didn't mean the Start Page search engine. I meant the Abrowser start page, both about:home and about:abrowser (although the second one no longer works for me... hmm).
